Northrop/McDonnell-Douglas NATF-23, the Navalized Advanced Tactical Fighter version of the YF-23
Tumblr media
"A proposed naval variant of the YF-23 known as the NATF-23 was considered as an F-14 Tomcat replacement. The original YF-23 design was first considered but would have had issues with flight deck space handling, storage, landing, and catapult launching reasons requiring a different design."
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
"The naval NATF-23 variant was different in many ways to the USAF version; the diamond wings were located as far back as possible, and the aircraft has conventional canted vertical tails instead of the ruddervator with serrations for low RCS and increased maneuverability at low speeds for aircraft carrier operations, folding wing capability for flight deck storage, reinforced landing gear, tailhook and canards for landing on aircraft carriers and thrust vectoring nozzles. The intakes were also different as they were a quarter circle with serrations, with a bumped compression surface. The NATF-23 had an increased 48 ft wingspan while the length was reduced to 62 ft."
Tumblr media Tumblr media
"The NATF program called for the procurement of 546 aircraft along with the USAF's planned procurement of 750 aircraft."
Tumblr media Tumblr media
"The NATF's internal payload was 4AAAM/AMRAAM, 2 AIM-9, AND 500 RDS 20MM. No external load was mandated, but provision for external carriage of weapons was desired."
May 7, 1991 Testimony before the Senate Armed Services Committee.
Tumblr media
"The Major Aircraft Review, launched in early 1990 under Secretary of Defense Richard Cheney, reduced the peak production rates of both the ATF and NATF, from 72 to 48 and from 48 to 36, respectively. This had the effect of substantially increasing the program cost. In August 1990, Admiral Richard Dunleavy, who was in charge of Navy aircraft requirements, stated that 'he did not see how the NATF could fit into any affordable plan for Navy aviation.' The ATF Dem/Val flight-testing was accomplished from August 1990 through January 1991, but this had little impact on the prospects for an NATF. In early 1991, consideration of the NATF was finally dropped after it was determined that the F-14 could meet the Navy's air superiority needs through 2015. There was, at least initially, an option to restart the NATF program in fiscal year 1997, although that has since been abandoned."

#USNavy #USAF #avgeeks #aviationlovers: NATF-22? There could've been a navalized F-22 stealth a la F-14 Tomcat with swing wings, Mach 2.25 supercruise, heavier landing gear, etc. So why did the US Navy choose the F-18 and F-35 instead? I'll tell you... 1/

You know that audio trending a while back going “Huey, Dewey, and Louie? Nononono, their names were supposed to be Jet, Turbo, and Rebel!” And then then one of them is like “I could have been Turbo???? I coULD HAVE BEEN TURBO??!?”
That’s me. Right now. Like literally just right now when I found out we could have had a

The US CONGRESS literally went “hey, you should totally do that like we just made that Naval Advanced Tactical Fighter (NAFT) program for you in 1988 so you should def do it.” And in order to make it more appealing, they told the Air Force to evaluate the carrier-based stealth bomber as a potential replacement for their F-111, basically saying the Navy and Air Force would share development costs in theory as both branches could employ both variants or some shit because having an aircraft be multi-role is super appealing.
So thus the NATF-22 was created and very shortly thereafter crumbled up and thrown into the trash by an Admiral Richard Dunleavy as if it were nothing because it was (and I’m using a mocking tone of voice here) too expensive.
And for the record, I see no difference in how the rest of fighter jet history played out, we ended up with a multi-role fighter just as expensive. Like don’t get me wrong, I love the F-35 and it’s quirks like it’s not its fault it was brought up in a society with so much attention on it. The media outreach and coverage in todays world is unprecedented, like no aircraft has been scrutinized or so intensely studied and watched before her.
BUT WE COULD HAVE HAD A TOMCAT RAPTOR DUDE COME ONE
Tumblr media
I imagine this program would have been Iceman’s BABY. He may not have been nearly high enough up in the chain at the time to have any knowledge of it let alone say in the matter, but you just know that when he found out what they could have had he was DEVASTATED. Full on, “WE COULD HAVE HAD A TOMCAT?!?!” moment right there. He mourned. He was inconsolable he straight up mourned his Rapcat. Or is it Tomtor?
And when the F-35 program rolled around you know he ain’t letting that happen again, with or without swept wings. He’s getting his F-35C.

The NATF or North Africa Trade Finance Summit 2022 will be held in Egypt from 7th to 8th June. The summit will see financial innovators, founders of pioneering and start-up companies, over 30 business leaders, and more. The theme for this year will be “Improving Trade Resilience Amid Series Of Global Supply Chain Disruptions.”
On Sunday, during the announcements, the Egyptian Cabinet elaborated that there would be immense panel discussions regarding the recent developments in the trade finance sector. They will also be reviewing the world of trade after the pandemic and the Russia-Ukraine war.
After all, according to Abdul Hakim Elwaer, the Regional Representative for the Near East and North Africa and the Assistant Director-General of the Food and Agriculture Organization, one of the biggest sufferers of this war are the Arab countries. Both the countries involved in the war fulfilled 30% of the world’s needs for grains, cooking oil, and wheat. And almost half the African and Middle Eastern countries rely heavily on these imports for their staples.
