From the moment I entered into the industry at Aveda Institute Nashville I was encouraged not to do Black hair. And yet from the first salons I worked with to later being an Educator for Aveda I worked twice as hard as my coworkers. But I was treated with the most disrespect. I was expected to speak to and teach black hair and all other hair textures all while being belittled in the same step. I came into hair school with a talent and I had to be the one to foster and encourage myself while my white counterparts were championed for only knowing how to execute white hair. Ive watched white students cry and be excused from doing Black hair. I have watched and came to the protection of Black women in those intuitions who paid the same tuition but spent most of that education educating their peers with no compensation. I’ve had to educate and explain why Black hair and textured hair needs to be learned by all students, the same way they learn highlights and perms. I inspired and challenged my students and received nothing but negative feedback from the admin and my peers in the school who wanted me to whitewash my material. There are so many things I could say. And those of you who know me have heard and seen the hard work I have put in and will continue to put in for Black hair and the community. But this isn’t new. Any human no matter race, creed, gender could sit in my chair and I could execute it well. Most of the white stylists I know in Nashville and beyond could not. So please with this fake shock. White stylists have demonized and belittled black hair for a lifetime.
