Hello, this is H.C. from Leaked Experience again ^^ I realized I never gave a proper explanation as to what happened with the Saint Tail analyses on our site and what the retranslation project had to do with them. (I'm not sure if that many people read them in the first place, but we do occasionally get notifications and questions about them, and it's something I feel like I should take responsibility for one way or another...)
The short answer is that they're still under revision, and I've been slowly churning at them! It's just that D.A. and I have been really busy during these last few months, but I'm hoping things will quiet down soon so I can get some quality time to write 😅 While we did have connections to the retranslation project, it was fundamentally a separate project that was done with much more thorough and proper judgment than my informal analysis, so I wanted to bring it closer to their work.
For the longer, more detailed answer, I'll need to explain a bit more about the timeline of events. I discovered the problem with Saint Tail's translation around exactly a year ago in March and started writing on the site in response (D.A. and I had always been talking about making a proper site for our operations, so it felt like a good opportunity). After the Discotek release of the anime came out shortly after and turned out to still have the same problems, the idea of a retranslation project started entering discussion within our friend/acquaintance circle, and the project formally took off in around July.
Since we at Leaked Experience had done a lot of research work and taken notes on where to find wording parallels, what to look out for in translation, etc., these resources were passed onto the translation group to cut down on some of the work, but since the "translations" done for my analysis were very hasty, informally-done ones, the translation team had a policy that if there was a discrepancy between their translation/interpretation and ours, theirs would take priority. The team's QCers were also picked from people who'd never had exposure to the series before, so they were able to evaluate everything with a fresh mindset, and the retranslation was done carefully line-by-line while taking everyone's insights into account.
So if you're worried that I'd forced my personal theories into the retranslation or anything, please be assured that this isn't the case, and that it's actually closer to the other way around! This blog post about the retranslation mentions a certain person who'd gotten the wrong impression about the anime because she'd still fallen victim to some biases caused by the old translation, and, uh... that's me, I'm the idiot in question 😅 Despite having written those articles to combat misconceptions caused by the old translation, even I hadn't been completely immune to its influence, and a lot of my analysis had some really bad takes.
Let alone the fact that I didn't even agree with my own takes anymore, I was also worried that leaving them up as-is would reflect badly on the retranslation due to Leaked Experience's affiliation with them. So that's why I took the analyses down, and I refused to start working on new versions until the retranslation was completely done. Unfortunately, it's been taking a while because I've been juggling it with some other work (we've been working on scanning some out-of-print releases of older magical girl manga for preservation), but it's something I really do want to get done, especially since I feel like I need to make up for what I'd said earlier about the anime. I had so many bad takes about the anime that were actually caused by the old translation, and I feel like such an idiot for saying things like that so emphatically ><;;

Here's a pet project I've been working on for the past few months: a full retranslation of the 1994-1996 phantom thief/magical girl series Saint Tail, both the manga and the anime! This is a series that has had quite a bit of a troubled localization history: every official English release of both the manga and the anime has been full of severe story-damaging translation problems, ranging from semantic error mistranslations to destroying most of the double-meaning wordplay and foreshadowing.
If you've read/watched this series before, I would heavily recommend you try it again with the new translation, because you may be surprised to find that it is a very different series from how previous translations had presented it as! A full explanation of the problem is on the project page, but to put it simply, there's an incredible amount of depth and nuance that had gotten completely lost, and the main reason I started this project was to give this series the proper chance it deserved.
Currently, we've finished the full manga (24 main chapters plus 3 extra chapters) and the 24 anime episodes that were adapted directly from the manga. I'll be continuing to put out the 19 remaining anime filler episodes one by one, so be sure to follow the project progress for updates if this series interests you!

ok so precure seasons usually have two 'themes' ( or maybe a better way to put it is a 'theme' and an 'aesthetic' or smth i'm tired) and we're trying to figure out what that second thing is. so here's my theory
so cure friendy has the detective hat and cape-thingy combo that folk have already pointed out
Tumblr media
And cure lillian has a top hat, something that's a somewhat typical thief accessory (see Arsene Lupin...no not the anime guy the first guy, Kaito Joker, Saint Tail tho she used it more like a bag)
Tumblr media
while their animal co-cures have crowns...
i'm thinking the first theme/motif is animal care and the second theme might be... mystery/capers of some sort
or something like that look the hotel i'm at woke us up in the middle of the night with a false fire alarm

Here in Italy the Magical Girl genre has always been big (as far I know, two of the earliest non-Japanese entries in the genre are W.I.T.C.H. and Winx Club, both from Italy). And I recently noticed something irksome: the variety in the genre has fallen, with most if not all recent series being about teenaged or preteen girls being given powers and a transformation to fight the forces of evil. And the fact many of those reading will be wondering what I’m talking about is exactly the problem:
What is the Magical Girl genre about, then? Exactly that: the protagonist is a girl (or close enough, more about that later) that has magic, or at least appears to do so. It usually involves an outside entity, often in the form of the mascot animal, to provide said magic and said magic involving a transformation, but not necessarily. For a few examples, Magical Star Magical Emi has the protagonist using her powers and transformation as a stage magician (she’s from a family of stage magicians but felt she had not talent, so when the mascot came by she jumped on it), Creamy Mami has the protagonist become an idol (the first magical idol singer) to try and win over an older childhood friend, Kaitou Saint Tail has the protagonist as a stage magician (though one so good to raise questions. She even does the transformation sequence in real time, and has trouble toning it down) that administers justice by being a phantom thief (and the police eventually started treating her theft warnings as a reason to investigate her soon-to-be victim), the protagonist of Tokimeki Tonight has powers because her family is from the magic world and her parents are a vampire and a werewolf who don’t want a muggle as a son in law (in fact it’s illegal), Himitsu no Akko-chan, the original Magical Girl manga (though not the first to be animated), has the protagonist being given a magic compact that allows her to turn in other people and no mascot, and Sally the Witch (the first Magical Girl anime) is a slice of life series with the protagonist being the preteen princess of the Land of Magic that has ran away from home out of boredom. The Magical Girl Warrior subgenre, is a much later development.
Many will cite the original Cutey Honey as the start of the genre, or at least the Magical Girl Warrior subgenre. Leaving aside that both Akko-Chan and Sally the Witch are from the 1960s and Cutey Honey first appeared in 1973, I’m sorry to say Cutey Honey is only a Magical Girl series retroactively: Honey was created as a cyborg, and only after the Magical Girl Warrior subgenre started people noticed the similarities (in fact she’s one of the inspirations for the original Magical Girl warrior), and she retroactively became one.
When and where did the Magical Girl Warrior subgenre start, then? It started on August 3 1991 on the magazine RunRun, when Takeuchi Naoko published the one-shot titled Codename: Sailor V. Yep, Sailor Moon wasn’t the first, Sailor Venus predates her and inspired her even in real life (and Sailor Venus apparently holds a grudge about people forgetting who started the whole thing). The inspirations, aside for the Magical Girls, are Cutey Honey, the various Tokusatsu series, and a volleyball manga.
If we want to be technical, the original She-Ra: Princess of Power from Filmation could be the first Magical Girl Warrior... But in the original 1985 series she’s a young adult.
Also, I know that in the past I called Chat Noir a magical girl even if he’s a boy. We’re also in the 2020s, he fulfills every other trope about magical girls, is either the co-protagonist or the main comprimary in a Magical Girl Warrior series, and he’s nowhere near as mysterious enough to be a Mysterious Protector. Unless he comes out of the screen and says otherwise, he’s a magical girl and we should be grateful for it, as few people in that show have the self-control and innate goodness to handle the Power of Destruction and not wipe all their enemies out.
Sorry for the rant, but... Where are the series with magical girls just doing their thing with magic rather than having to fight the forces of evil in place of the adults? I miss them.

Well, it took way longer than it probably should have, but H.C. has finally finished her rewritten version of the Saint Tail manga analysis (both first and second halves)! The analysis has been completely reworked from the ground up -- only about 5% of the text is directly from the old versions -- and is much more thorough and cohesive than before, using the recently retranslated version as a base and prioritizing analysis over recap. (Although it may repeat itself a little too much. I apologize about that -H.C.)
A version more geared towards the anime is still in the works, since H.C. wants to give it the treatment it properly deserves, but that one will be a little while longer. But she would still like to finish it before the end of the year, and until then, please enjoy the new and improved manga analysis (and we're very, very sorry for the wait!)
