Happy (early lol) Worldbuilding Wednesday! What are some of your favorite elements of world building? Tell us something cool about the worldbuilding you've done so far. Use the tag #worldbuilding wed asks and see who else wants to chat this fine Wednesday :) (Feel free to hold onto this til Wednesday proper. I just WAY too many people to get to and the ask limit makes it impossible to do in one day)
My favorite thing to do with world building is to mix up magical elements into something more fun.
The classic castles and dragons is cool and all, but where’s the pizzazz? show me how much you can use magic in your world to make it it’s own world instead of making it generic fairy tale kingdom #83287, you can make ANYTHING happen with magic! why tread the same trails?
As for something cool with the world I’m building so far. . .
buckle up guys, you’re in for a ride
Okay, so the world I have set for a story of mine that is still a work in progress features two formerly dying worlds colliding into one single world in order to thrive.
When the first world clashes with the second world, both worlds change to accommodate each others’ existence.
The first world (before merge) is one very similar to our own world except it’s post-apocalyptic, with the apocalypse being that the rich killed the world and watched it die slowly and painfully in order to line their own pockets with more riches. Other differences from that world and ours (aside from alternate names/logos of brands to avoid copyright) is that there’s a lot more technology around, the differences between our own world’s tech and their world’s tech range from subtle to obvious. This world calls itself “Earth”.
Post merge, this world is known to the other world as the kingdom Maritegnh (pronounced: Mm-Air-Rye-it-Gin), but it’s more often referred to as “the nightmare land”, as from what they can see of it from a distance, it’s a strange, dark, mostly empty world with intimidating architecture and an eternal night sky except the stars and moon seem to have been stolen.
If anyone would be brave enough to scout the new land, they’d find that it is teeming with lots of scary monsters, a lot of them being eerily intelligent for the second world’s tastes (and far bigger/more intimidating). Unlike the second world’s humans who were born into magic, the first world humans’ bodies were not prepared for magic. So when it hit the first world like a giant flood, a large majority of the population became sentient monsters, while the ones who became magic-wielding humans have very unstable magic that they barely know how to control/use properly.
Five humans from the first world became gods in the merge; the god of travel, death, and music: Myrsi (pronounced “Mercy”), the goddess of war, fire, and hope: Iris, the deity of magic, change, and ritual: Myseri (pronounced “Misery”), the god/goddess of technology, the internet, and wifi: Binary, and last but not least, the deity of chaos: Rory Cook, who is completely unaware of their new status as a deity of chaos.
The second world (before merge) is a fantasy world where magical monsters roam, all humans have magical powers (some people have stronger powers than others), gods exist and walk among mortals (but are usually found in temples dedicated to them) monsters exist but they’re all basically wild/domesticated/non-sentient (AKA: no ‘monster’ races, you just get magic humans, elves, dwarfs, orcs, the gods, and any offspring between them) In this world, the term “monster” refers to magically enchanted toys, wild animals, pets, things like that. This world calls itself “Demra” (pronounced: d’em-rah)
Post merge, this world doesn’t have drastic changes to the populations’ physical bodies, but now they have new strange forces to investigate and learn to deal with: the internet, sentient monsters, legends of creatures that resembled humans, but didn’t have even a single drop of magic in their blood, and the new gods this world brought.
