Feeling inspired!

Hey Lyd – how are you?

Couldn’t wait to write another post, feel like my head is working overtime at the moment with ideas and wanting to be a sponge for everything! - Read things, watch things, listen to things, talk to people… don’t really know where it has come from but riding the wave while it lasts!

I had a great time in Bristol & London. Have you visited Bristol before? It’s a cool city and each time I visit I see why a lot of my friends from uni have decided to live there since graduating.

Found it surprising how many cool wee cafes, coffee shops, restaurants, independent art shops are able to survive there and how there were remarkably fewer high street stores and places like Nero. I guess there must be a really supportive community of independents and that’s why it works!

Visited a great shop called Papersmiths in Bristol – so many gorgeous magazines and stationary bits. Just spent ages looking at everything and touching all the nice paper! I could spend A LOT of money very easily in there!

When in London I visited the V&A for the Frida Kahlo exhibition ‘Making Her Self Up.’ It was pretty special. Photography wasn’t allowed so I haven’t any photos to share from it but it was probably good to actually just go around and take everything in, looking at it properly and reading all about her life. I didn’t realise what a hard life she had it was incredible how she continued to take so much time and pride in her appearance, choosing to braid ribbons through her hair every day, her prosthetic leg had beautiful red shoes with bells on, she had to have body casts to help her spine and posture which she decorated with paintings. There were lots of photos of her, which were amazing quality, there is definitely something powerful about her face, the way that for most of the portraits she had taken she is not looking face on to the camera, more like her face is always ¾ facing away. They actually reminded me of some photography I have seen of Solange. Another proper power female!

I haven’t seen ‘Frida’ the film with Salma Hayek, have you? I am hoping to watch it soon!

There is an Orla Kiely exhibition on at the Fashion & Textile Museum too that I visited. Pretty cool to be celebrating an Irish woman, feel like there isn’t enough out there! I just love her prints, the block colours and geometric design is something I see in my own work. It’s crazy how popular her design ‘Stem’ has become. It’s that thing of someone just DOING their idea. It is simple but has become such a massive, defining part of her brand and I guess how she’s become a household name. Inspiring!!! It’s like, just get on and do it – it’s half the battle/secret of success.

I’ve been trying to keep creativity flowing – looking for little projects. I’m back making pom pom earrings! I am also in the process of getting my website back up online, feel like it will give me some motivation to keep working on self initiated projects.

I did the screen printing workshop at the Derry Print Workshop a couple of weekends ago, made a print for my friends 25th– so there are 25 things that she likes & that remind me of her! I will have to post it up next blog post once I’ve sent it to her.

Been listening away to Desert Island Discs! Enjoyed Noel Gallagher, Tom Hanks & Stephen Fry yesterday! Definitely need to have a think about what I’d choose.

Recently finished a book ‘Everything I know about Love’ by journalist Dolly Alderton. I loved it. I will probably read it again! She has some podcasts – a weekly one called ‘The High Low’ with another journalist, Pandora Sykes, where they chat about things that have happened over the week, discussing things they have read & heard. Also - ‘Love Stories’, where she interviews celebrities about their lives & experiences in love. Both, I really like. Slightly obsessed with her at the moment.

It was so nice to see you had the ‘Hummingbird’ print framed already! Very cool to think there is some of my work all the way over in NZ!

How was the exhibition you went to visit? Hope it sparked some ideas for you; just get things turning in your head!

Oh yeah – seen this on Instagram – might be nice to give us a reason to create something fun, I think you can submit up to 5 entries too. Will aim to give it a go!
