AITA for refusing to be put on a neighborhood roster?
not too long ago i (20s m) moved into a house with my mom (40s) and a friend of hers (30s-40s? m). it’s a rental in a city, about a mile or two from downtown. not long after we moved in we were approached by a neighbor (60s-70s? m) about adding our names to a roster of everyone who lived in the neighborhood. he wanted a LOT of info— names, phone numbers, email addresses— and this info would be added to basically an address book that supposedly everyone within like, a 2 or 3 block radius would get. i’m a skeptic and private person at heart, and so is my mom, so we politely said we didn’t want to be added to the list.
thing is, our neighbor… kind of didn’t really give us an option to opt out. not outright saying “you have to”, but was really pushy about how the rest of the neighborhood had their names on it and its available in the event of emergencies and things like that.
maybe it’s just the urbanite in me talking, who’s only ever lived in apartment buildings and doesn’t really know how to be “neighborly”, but i think this guy is (at least one of) the only homeowner on this block. most of this area is large multi family homes, and from what i’ve gathered the majority of them are rented out by owners to younger city people like myself, so i’m not sure how he gets by with this HOA neighborhood watch type stuff he’s trying. i don’t imagine a world where he was able to put this together without some resistance from other people he asked.
nonetheless, we begrudgingly added our info to the roster, and then were delivered the printout: 13 pages worth of contact information for people in the neighborhood… if you can call people 5 whole city blocks away part of the neighborhood. and, as suspected, there’s a lot of rentals, with all necessary contact info for landlords, and minimal info from the actual tenants. like, it feels more like a snitch sheet than anything. i don’t know when i would ever want to get a hold of a landlord who doesn’t even live here about an issue that could be brought up with the tenants themselves. like i said, it feels like HOA roleplay with a bunch of renters.
i really don’t feel comfortable being on this list or having it (there’s even someone on there who’s marked as deceased…?) or knowing other people around here have it. since moving in, there hasn’t been one time where i’ve considered using it. but, i’m not sure… aita for refusing? like, is there an angle to this that i’m not seeing? is this just something that neighbors do? it’s not like we’ve ever been contacted by anyone else around here, so is it just ultimately harmless and good for emergencies so i shouldn’t worry about it?

bigger better Neighborhood for sims
so i took my small neighborhood i made a while back, and i put it on a much bigger lot and improved it and filled it out bigger and better and oh my gods i am pretty pleased with it if i do say so myself
It should be useable as a multi-family apartment lot when the new For Rent pack comes out
Actually, it should be usable as almost any kind of lot -- retail, cafe, residential, park, gym... would need a tiny bit of work to run as a restaurant but you could do it -- i even left a small city block with a debug shell to delete on it ready for you to build your own little something there
It has an insane amount of detail and things for your sim to do. the park in the middle has a community theater with a karaoke set up on the stage so people will actually watch performances. There's an apartment building with 2 two bedroom apartments, a studio apartment over the bookstore/cafe, and a small house with a garage. And a run down block with a small homeless encampment.
all the buildings are built out with details down to a plunger and a non-functional garbage can in every bathroom. I even made a little crosswalk signal for the two busiest crosswalks
I particularly like the little block i built my corner store on -- the convenience store has a bunch of vending machines, and a coffee pot behind the counter, so sims will go in and get a cup of coffee and buy things from the vending machines. There's a laundromat next to it with a bus stop out front and above that there's a little clothing boutique and a photography studio
On the bad end of town there's an unbuilt block with some construction stuff and everything a homeless sim needs to live outdoors. And then across the street from that there's a seedy warehouse/tenant house building with a cool little food-truck bar situation and a chain-link fence basketball court area

Just What is this Developer Up To..?
Oddo Developments is building, planning or has built tower blocks of thousands of beds and and 'townhome' developments across this part of the county and the greater Kansas City area.
The developer is relentless in fighting communities across the region - with teams of architects, lawyers, illustrators, PR people and paid-up engineers all producing 'unbiased reports', 'scenic' renderings and of course candid submissions in multiple sets of municipal planner meetings. Meetings that local residents know nothing about until the Oddo Project is already baked - and its odor has already seeped all through the corridors of the various city halls.

And IF there is a need for high stacked rental housing - maybe all these legal maneuverings - that just happen to NEVER include the locals and the communities Oddo moves it resources into - are meeting that need. But that doesn't explain why Oddo is determined to grab hold of the gateway to Cedar Creek...

The Oddo company's other plans, on a much less significant Cedar Creek adjacent site - (between Valley Parkway & 103rd/Hwy 10), are much more modestly scaled. Not on a high elevation - those plans are only intended to be TWO STORIES HIGH...!

Yet More ODDO It will be doubly difficult to sell apartments with traffic views if the luckless Oddo residents wake up to find that Oddo over-development in Lenexa is causing traffic to back up onto Hwy 10...!
Of course selling views of traffic on K-10 would be more of an uphill battle than selling views from the top of the hill on Cedar Creek parkway. Cedar Creek views that we provide, at our expense, and Shadow Glen golf course views that Oddo will appropriate along with the name 'Shadow Glen'.
So is the deal - 'stacking "synthetic stone cladding" and "cement board" multi-level micro apartments' all along K-10 designed to catch the eye of commuters? Those forced to wait for a space on the Cedar Creek off-ramp will have noting to look at but tail-lights and 'ANOTHER ODDO DEVELOPMENT' billboards? Logical maybe - if cheap and nasty.
But what does that do to the claims of luxury resort living..? Is that really the way you recruit top level tenants? Somehow I think not. So really - what is Oddo Developments doing trying to take over the entrance to Cedar Creek..? Why does THIS site have to be 6 stories of building - as opposed to 2 elsewhere (from which he clearly must be able to turn a profit...)?
I'll tell you - this is all about what we have, we created, we should own and we should be in charge of (were it not for another developer who clings onto control through a faux HOA)...
Oddo Developments wants to loot Ceder Creek of its views, its open spaces, its character and its green resources... He has no way to prevent his tenants using our open property, crowding the carefully stewarded natural spaces - and our absurd developer-run HOA has no plans, ability or inclination to stop Oddo. After all - birds of a feather....
So we should be in no doubt that the rapacious machine presently gnawing at our door, does not have a better face or a nicer plan. There are no 'more acceptable' approaches or alternatives. Not from an entity that is here for the singular reason of appropriating for itself all that we have worked for, contributed to, managed, observed, maintained, stewarded and paid for. Oddo's very presence in Cedar Creek is fundamentally at odds with all of us who live here. And that difference is irreconcilable.
The essence of Cedar Creek is at stake here. Nothing more, nothing less.

The kitchen is huge (by NYC standards) and 2 people can comfortably cook up a storm.
Cute brick patio out front for sipping coffee, gardening, and people watching.
The apartment has a private and secure entrance. We will keep one bedroom door locked with our personal items for the duration of your stay.
To note:
We are part-time in NYC, and will stay in the unit upstairs for when we're in town. We are looking for a long term relationship with subletters who either are looking to rent for a multi-month period of time, or on-and-off over the course of a longer period of time. Ideally we could navigate a schedule that works for all parties between March and November, but we’re flexible for the right folks. Looking for a minimum 2-3 month commitment sometime starting March 1, 2024 (flexible move-in date) through late November.
This space would be perfect for one person or a couple. No pets, no large parties/events, and no smoking in the apartment.
We have plants in the living room that would love a bit of water, so plant-friendly renters are appreciated!

ABOUT THIS LISTER
We are a queer couple in our early 40s who have called Bed Stuy home for over 16 years. We have great relationships with our neighbors and so we’re looking for mature, quiet, and respectful folks who would keep those relationships thriving. We would stay in the upstairs unit occasionally, so we would use the same building stairwell, though the sublet unit is completely private. We have a quiet (a little nervous) rescue dog who loved our last tenants - she is slow to love, but her love is big.
RENTAL REQUIREMENTS
We require 1 month’s rent as security deposit. We also ask for 2 personal/professional references, a copy of government ID, and proof of income/funds, please gather those as you reach out. 
Please email us to set up a time to view the apartment. Because we travel quite a bit, we may not always be able to show the unit in person, but we can go through the virtual tour together and answer any questions you may have. If you are NYC based and we are in town, we are happy to show the unit in person.
We are flexible with rental dates especially for the right person, though we do give preference for longer stays.

OTHER MISC
This apartment is about 7 steps up from the sidewalk. The apartment is outfitted with double-paned windows to minimize noise, but Rockaway Ave is a moderately trafficked street, so you may occasionally hear the sounds of NYC. And because we do have a small and sweet dog in the unit upstairs, those with severe dog allergies may not be a good fit.

CWS Retained by D Watts for Switchable Smart Film Installation Project
WASHINGTON – D Watts has hired Commercial Window Film for a switchable smart film project for a Washington law firm.
D Watts, an Alexandria, Va.-based construction company, will be building out two floors in a central Washington, D.C. office building for Orrick, Herrington & Sutcliffe.
Commercial Window Shield is a leading installer of switchable smart film. The company’s task in this project is to install switchable smart film on the firm’s multi-purpose conference room on the 5th floor as well as the firm’s boardroom on the 6th floor.  The conference room features curved glass, adding to the complexity of the installation.

The electrical controls for the film will be integrated into the tenant’s Lutron control system. When the film is powered on, the glass remains clear allowing passersby to see inside. When the film is powered off it becomes opaque, blocking views of the interior and turning the glass into a privacy wall.
A second benefit of switchable smart films is that the film is projectable, meaning they can be used as a display screen for viewing power point presentations, videos and other images. The combination of on-demand privacy and turning the switchable smart film into a projectable screen has made switchable smart film a popular choice in recent years for office renovation projects, as is the case with the Orrick project.
The project is expected to commence in early 2024. As always, Commercial Window Shield installers will work closely with D Watt contractors to avoid scheduling conflicts.
