On the island of Madagascar, near the town of Morondava there is an amazing place - the Alley of Baobabs. The baobab is a sacred tree for the people of Madagascar and is the national tree of the island. He is considered the progenitor of the forest and is revered on a par with the gods. The Valley of the Baobabs is on the list of natural heritage of Madagascar.
Though baobabs are not unique to Madagascar, it has the well-known Avenue of the Baobabs. Also native in Australia and mainland Africa, they are made of fibrous wood in concentric rings, the trunk can store a lot of water. Known as ‘tree of life’, the baobab can provide much needed water during a drought period. With 8 identified species, 6 are endemic to Madagascar. They can live up to 5,000 years and can reach up to 30 metres (about 98 feet) high and up to a huge 50 metres (about 165 feet) in circumference.
The best time to visit the Avenue of the Baobabs or Alley of the Baobabs is sunset or sunrise. After a wonderful meal at the Michelin worthy Mad Zebu restaurant in Belo Tsiribihina (near the Tsingy), we rushed towards Morondava, to catch the baobabs at sunset. This included a ferry ride (like the one below) and another drive, speeding to make sure we make it by sunset.
We missed the actual sunset but was able to capture the baobabs in a nice light.
Below is the picture of the avenue with people, giving the idea of the scale of the trees.
Baobabs in Madagascar are mostly found in the drier south west part of the island. The tree of life provides water during drought; its fruit, high in nutrition can be eaten providing food, making the baobab important in the arid parts of the island.
The Malagasy giant rat (Hypogeomys antimena), also known as the votsotsa or votsovotsa, is a nesomyid rodent found only in the Menabe region of Madagascar. It is an endangered species due to habitat loss, slow reproduction, and limited range (200 square kilometres north of Morondava, between the rivers Tomitsy and Tsiribihina). Pairs are monogamous and females bear only one or two young per year.
They can leap almost 3 ft (91 cm) in the air, for which reason they are sometimes called giant jumping rats.
