Next door, the TV's flashing
Blue frames on the wall
It's a comedy from the '70s
With a lead no one recalls
He vanished into oblivion
It's easy to do
And I cried a sea when you talked to me
The day you said we were through
But it's alright, some enchanted night
I'll be with you

It's now just over 20 years since Elliott Smith passed away.
In my humble opinion, one of the best lyricists and musicians of our time.
Rest in peace fella

Song: Miss Misery by Elliott Smith
— Lyrics:
"I'll fake it through the day
With some help from Johnnie Walker Red
Send the poisoned rain down the drain
To put bad thoughts in my head".

It's ok.
Did I mainline Our Flag Means Death? Yes. But.
I am fucking ok.
Have I been listening to Miss Misery on repeat since? Sure and what about it? Like I said.
I am excellent.
Are there some Mitski and FJM songs I have queued up to play while I curate a reading list of the finest OFMD slashfics AO3 has to offer? As if that isn't a given after eps 9 & 10.
I know I seem mental but I'm fine.
Actually

Some of you might know that I’m a massive Elliott Smith fan, the subtitle of this blog ‘Needle in the Hay’ being a massive give away.
Sadly, he’d passed away by the time I discovered his music, but his words played a massive part in my musical upbringing and helped get me through some dark times.
Over the years Tumblr has allowed to interact and chat with many fans of his from around the world. One incredibly kind person even went and signed the famous Figure 8 (album cover) wall in California on my behalf! That meant more than words could ever describe, especially with me being 8 thousand miles away. The kindness of strangers, never fails to amaze me.
I was thinking about Elliott today, and I decided to do some internet digging to see if he ever played my city. Something that never really occurred to me before. It not only turns out that he did, but there’s a recording of the ENTIRE show available online.
Elliott played Sheffield, England on 5th December 1998 (I was 12) at the infamous venue, The Leadmill. A venue I’ve frequented many a time since, without ever knowing that Elliott once graced that very stage. My first ever show took place there, and many a Friday night drinking session took part in that very building.
So I’m sat here, listening to that very recording. Imagining myself inside those walls, amongst these people, in my very own city listening to one of my favourite singers of all time.
Unfortunately, time travel isn’t possible but this is as close as you get.
RIP Elliott Smith.
