Introducing: the Mockfest

A Splatfest on Tumblr!

Okay so it's not actually that much of a Splatfest so much as it is for me to write silly banter between idols, draw stuff, and then let y'all vote on pointless questions. But I'm having fun with it, so now it's a thing here.

The Shell-Stoppers

An up-and-coming trio of octoling siblings who rose up from underground to the streets of Inkopolis Square, and later Splatsville. The band consists of main vocalist Emily ("Hachi"), sound mixer Coral ("DJ Bub-L-Gum"), and instrumentalist Elliot ("MintyFresh"), who— rumor has it— are somehow connected to another pop duo: Off the Hook. While the Shell-Stoppers themselves have never achieved true "idol" status, they have somewhat of a following and host a series of "online Splatfests", or Mockfests, in their spare time; nothing huge (they don't want to take the attention away from Deep Cut and the real splatfests, but playful little polls on generally unimportant topics— complete with funny discussions, as they each defend their choice before opening up the vote.

How this works:

Each poll will be open for 7 days

You may reblog and comment if you have something to add to the discussion, but please keep it civil and relevant to the topic at hand

Team propaganda is allowed if so desired (if that's your thing)

Winning team gets one piece of artwork relating to the theme

Simple, right? You're welcome to organize a group of friends and do some actual splatting for it, too, by all means. I just am not going to organize anything myself.

Also taking suggestions for future Mockfest themes!!!

2019 Wrap-Up | Author Recs

Happy New Year to all of you!

Lately, I have received several asks, asking what fics I recommend. I usually struggle to come up with this on the spot - what do I pick, after all!? Hence, I have decided to, as a wrap-up of 2019, and to start off 2020, make one big recommendation list of authors whose work I have enjoyed in 2019, with a few specific fics I like from them and what I believe they are good at.

If your name is not on this list, I’m sorry! I might simply not have read your work (my New Year’s resolution is to read more!), or my head is too much of a chaos to remember at the moment I made this list.

That said, here we go, in no specific order at all!

@saieras - Really like his writing style and has a specialty in post-HTTYD3 fics. If you’re looking for fics featuring Zephyr and Nuffink, as fully fleshed out characters with personalities, and what might have happened years after HTTYD3, read his works! Especially Once There Were Dragons and How To Train Your Parents?

@athingofvikings - Writing Alternate History is an art and this is the man who knows how to practice it. If you are interested in seeing how the world we know from HTTYD would flow into the real Viking times, A Thing Of Vikings is the most thoroughly-researched, epic-scale Alternative History fic you can find, with a wonderful community around it that thoroughly loves the fic. It’s quite long, so curling up under a blanket in winter might be a good occasion start reading ;)

@seagreen-meets-grey - Mostly writes Modern AU Hiccstrid one-shots and short stories. They always make me feel fuzzy inside and she manages to put down their relationship and dynamic down very well with little words, with a very comfortable and pleasant writing style. Personal favourites are When Lightning Strikes and When you’re close to me.

@itsasumbrella - If you want to read in Spanish, this is the place. I’ve read some of her work through Google Translate, and actually enjoyed it, so I can’t even imagine how good her work is in the original language. Especially check out Wicked Game!

@shipmistress9 - So. Much. Hiccstrid. So. good. too. She has one-shots, longer stories in all kinds of different settings and they’re all absolutely wonderful. If you’re looking for a Medieval Soulmate AU, look no further than For The Love of A Princess.

@evilwriter37 - Evilwriter covers a different section of fiction than most of the authors on this list and definitely deserves a shout-out for doing so. They’re very good at writing whump and less popular, “complicated” ships like Vigcup and Dagcup. And they have a lot of it, huge respect from my side for how consistently they write. So if you’re looking for ‘darker’ or more unusual content (Intersex Hiccup AU comes to mind) - it doesn’t have to be, it’s not for everyone, and that’s fine - definitely check them out. (But also don’t think that whump is the only thing they write, you can find more fluffy stuff with them too! They have huge range)

@mintyfreshness - Dreamworks Dragons: Tokyo Drift is one of my favourite one-shots of this year. It’s premise is great and the execution gives me all kind of feels, which is what writing a great one-shot is all about. I hope to get around to reading more from her this year!

@tysonrunningfox - Fox writes with such an amazing inherent amount of humour that I can only bow for, because it livens up her writing incredibly and adds another dimension to her stories, because she can hit that sweet spot of having certain scenes be both dramatic and hilarious at the same time, in a wonderful way. I unfortunately haven’t gotten around to reading Ripped, but I’ve heard it’s very good. I did very much enjoy Once Upon a Christmas Wedding at Haddock Manor, High and Flighty (perfect Hiccstrid short story) and the Festerverse series is one of the most extensive next-generation works I’ve seen and is all around great. I hope she keeps it up in the coming year!

@oh--you--pretty--things - Finding Valhalla stole my heart in 2019. It just wrenches my heart in exactly the right way and I devour every update it gets. How Astrid Got Her Groove Back is an amazing work of cougar!strid, Seize My Heart can be considered a fandom classic and Young God is definitely on my to-read list and I can’t wait to get around tot that.

@funkytoes - So many AUs. So many great AUs. I love The Wild Crown, I love Consort of the Sun, I love the comic The Breaking of the Waves (mermaid!Hiccup AU). Picture Perfect (Astrid claims to be dating Hiccup to get her family off her back, who is just a random guy from a stock photo, then encounters him in real life) is hilarious and lovely. And did I mention that their art is amazing too? Because it absolutely is. So much talent right there.
