Listed: See Jazz
Tumblr media
See Jazz, the recording project of Brooklyn-based songwriter Aaron Pfannebecker, uses drum machines and synthesizers to construct warped bedroom collage pop guitars and earworm vocals. Jennifer Kelly liked the single “1982” from Pfannebecker’s Is This Anything? a whole lot, noting its “vertiginous balance between tremulous, astral ideality and wounded, grounded vulnerability, the same contrast between ragged doubt and heavenly solace.”
Some songs that stick to me lately
Cyndi Lauper — The Goonies ‘R’ Good Enough
youtube
I’ve always loved this song and I recently rediscovered it on a dive into Lauper’s music again and it always puts me in a great mood. It just makes me happy like a lot of Motown does especially The Jackson 5. It bops.
The The — This Is the Day
youtube
This is a top 3 song of the 1980s and probably was the biggest influence on this record I just made whether I knew it or not. I could listen to this on repeat forever and never give sick of it.
The Osmonds — Denim
youtube
No one’s written a better song about a decade.
Minnie Ripperton — Les Fleurs
youtube
One of my favorite songs. It has the biggest chorus that hits like 20 “Smells Like Teen Spirit’s.“ It’s epic. It’s holy. Minnie Ripperton’s voice is one the most beautiful I’ve ever heard. Maya Rudolph is her daughter and Ripperton died way too young.
Jeff the Brotherhood — Camel Swallowed Whole
youtube
Jake and Jamin have always made great music, but this is by far my favorite thing they’ve ever done. It’s great. Everyone should hear it. Kunal Prakash also plays on this I think, and you couldn’t ask for more awesome people to be making great art together.
Bob Dylan — Precious Angel (Live at the Warfield Theatre)
youtube
One of the things I think we all take for credit is Bob Dylan’s ability to always evolve and change a song. People use to slam him for not being able to recognize classic songs they wanted to hear because he plays them entirely differently than their record versions. I think people are coming around now and we all should. Its’s rare and it’s brave and no one owes anyone anything especially in art. This take isn’t too different than the recorded version except for one thing. It’s got 100x more soul.
New Order — Regret
youtube
This is probably my favorite song by New Order. Although that could change. It’s got everything I love about them. Incredible drums over great drum programming. Peter Hook’s the best melodic bass player from the UK. He shines here. The tones of the keyboards fit perfectly and Bernard Sumner’s guitar is perfect. His direct lyrics are perfect.
Haruomi Hosono — Sports Men
youtube
Philharmony is a record I keep coming back to. It’s dense and still open and very much a vision of one person. YMO is great but this one hits me harder and “Sports Men” is the poppiest song on the record. It’s straight ahead in an unusual way or unusual in a straightforward way. Whatever you want it to be, it is.
Discovery Zone — Dance II
youtube
This is the last new song I’ve heard that’s still my favorite new song I’ve heard. It’s been a couple years and it’s still my favorite new song. It’s the perfect pop song. Discovery Zone is the recording project of JJ Weihl. She’s brilliant.
R.L. Burnside — Let My Baby Ride
youtube
This is a great genre collision. 1 + 1 = 3. It’s still new and it’s evolution. It’s got a very early Beck feel. I love everything about it.

“Linda and her sister Olivia Arias, who later became Mrs. George Harrison, were friends of ours and they turned our record on to George. George loved the record and he came to a place called the Topanga Corral to hear us perform. He said he loved our songs and loved our energy and he pretty much signed us on the spot.” - Michael Manning, Music and Art Interviews, March 12, 2013 “[Jiva are] just two guitars, bass, and drums. Three of them — the two guitarists and the bass player — all write their own tunes. They sing separately and together, but they’re very up. They’re like a little R&B/rock band. Very nice, very positive. That’s the great thing about them, is they’re positive. You know, I mean, at this time in world history when there’s so much sort of negative and confusion, they’re really… they know where *they’re* going. And full of love and up, positive, loving awareness. And they’re pretty funky too. You know, they’re young, and it’s like, I think this will be the first album they’re making with a guy, a producer called Stuart Levin who has just done the Minnie Ripperton second album, and he’s the producer of The Crusaders. That’s quite interesting. In fact they just start tonight to record.” - George Harrison, radio interview, 1975 (x)

it’s time to talk about pre/no outbreak joel miller x black reader headcanons
because i don’t think enough people think about how sarah is literally a black teenager, with a latino dad, and a mom out of the picture, and how having someone who intrinsically understands her would be so important.
like, you and joel work together, or you’re neighbors, or he frequents the coffee shop you work at, or you’re the stylist at the salon he decides to take sarah to—because he’s kind of at a loss when her mom leaves the picture, he doesn’t know how to deal w hair like hers so he sheepishly asks you for help, or to give some tips, or products, or steps on how to take care of textured hair
which turns into you coming over to meet sarah, which turns into meals at the millers, which turns into spending more time with joel, and bonding with sarah, which turns into a slow, sweet, steady process of falling in love with joel and sarah and tommy.
you guys share bits and pieces of your culture with each other—he’s teaching you some spanish (unless you already know!), you show him the movies and shows and music you grew up on (“living single was the original friends, i’m being so serious right now.”), and you share things with sarah that only you guys would understand, or relate to. one time when you’re over at the miller’s, you’re upstairs with sarah, braiding her hair in front of her vanity and you’ve got minnie ripperton’s “perfect angel” album in sarah’s cd player and you’re both singing, trying to hit that note in lovin’ you—and joel is watching so fondly from the doorway, thinking about two things: 1. how you slid so perfectly into their lives, like they had made room in their hearts just for you and 2. when he fell in love with you
was it when you would cook for him, your mama’s recipe you swore you wouldn’t share, or when you put on your old school steppin’ music mixtape and forced him to dance with you in his living room, or maybe when you told him he’s doing such a great, wonderful, amazing job with sarah despite whatever he may think. and he thanked you, for everything you’re doing for them, for sarah, because he hasn’t been able to feed an important part of her culture into her life and you’ve done it so seamlessly. but you get it, because you’re a black woman in texas, and not everyone can be beyoncé, ha ha. if there’s anything you can do to make sarah feel less alone, you’re going to do it.
either way, joel loves you, and he loves everything about you, the way the sun shines on your skin, how you can pull off any color you want, and the bounce of your hair—the richness of your eyes, the curve of your hips, the way you’re so strong willed, with a soul only you could hold. he’s keeping you around, he thinks, not just for sarah—he’ll be a little selfish this time around, and do it for himself too
(also sorry but joel dedicating ebony eyes by stevie wonder to you…tears and tears and tears)

My Top 50 Songs of 2023*
*not necessarily from 2023
Year number 8 of the Top 50 Songs of 2023 that aren’t necessarily from 2023 playlist!
The biggest change this year is that I did my best to try and actually sequence the playlist so I recommend turning off the shuffle I've suggested in years past and let the thing play in order.
To be totally honest, I didn't fall in love with that many albums this year BUT I did fall in love with a ton of tracks, most of which are represented here (especially the end of the playlist which skews very 2023).
So check it out. Discover something new or fall in love with something you haven’t heard in a while. See you next year!
