Zhou Zishu smiled. It was pleasant to be transparent to this man, he thought. Weeks of traveling and days in his bed had undone the masks he had spent years fashioning. “I’m thinking we should pay your master a visit.”
He watched shock break across Wen Kexing’s face, only to smooth out quickly. “We should?” he said.
Sequel to Millions of Suns Left, where, shortly after Qin Jiuxiao's death, canon Zhou Zishu was thrown into an alternate universe where Wen Kexing is part of Siji Manor and almost everyone who was dead is still alive.
(Yes, that's Han Ye from Legend of Anle. I wanted a Gong Jun who looked more like Siji Disciple!WKX)

tagged by @leenik-geelo to list my 5 favorite fics i've written! like 4 of them are from my current fandom—i just think while my older fics are very Me and i like them, i'm always learning and i think (hope) it shows the more i write
that said!! on with the list
leave a light in the window (sw, 32k, padmé-centric gen, may 2021): this was a little ambitious for me at the time, and i went in sooo not knowing what i wanted to do with the premise that i discarded 17k and went a totally different direction. i think there's ways it's clumsy, but i also think i managed a fair amount of what i wanted to do with it, and the fact that i wrote it all before posting meant i got to figure out what structure i wanted (chapter v the storm is my favorite in that respect). my niche gen baby <3
trembling on the branch, unfurl your petals and grow (word of honor, 47k, wenzhou, oct 2021-april 2022): this was my first fic in this fandom and the first long work i finished while posting it as a wip. (i have a horrendous record of starting multi-chapters and not finishing them). i'm also just really fond of it; it was so fun to work in chengling's pov, and get to give some gentle endings, and play with my cast of minor characters and ocs. it's also really mixed in with my experience of/feelings while making friends in this fandom!
calling us home across the open yards (word of honor, 6k, wenzhou (but mostly about zzs & jiuxiao and zzs & chengling, july 2022): did the world need a modern us au of them from me? debatable. but this is here bc this au has become kind of an ongoing story to think about & talk about with @deepestbluesky, thinking about their lives and relationships many years down the line. like i like this fic but also it's the tip of an iceberg.
Millions of Suns Left (word of honor, 14k, wenzhou, oct 2022): tbh i just really think i managed this one. ship fic is still an ongoing struggle but i think i did it well here, and this kind of au is sooooo my happy place but for once i didn't let it carry me away too much to just be satisfied with the one story. (i mean i do have sequels i want, but i think this story stands alone really well). idk it's a good fic.
strange thing found (word of honor, 19k, wenzhou, dec 2022): frankly beyond this being a banger it's here bc writing it was so much FUN. sky is obviously my co-conspirator with a lot shl these days but writing a fic together was great, and i think it's stronger for being both of us together. also, i have lost it about how cute bats are so many times bc of this (ostensibly) monster fic.

27. What is your most and least favorite part of writing?
Most: when you write it and read it back and you are loving the character interactions and voice and it gives you feelings or makes you smile. That's the best. My least favorite part is when you haven't worked out the ending (or how to get from your current point to a planned ending) and you feel like you're running around in circles trying to figure it out.

54. What's your favorite part about the fanfiction writing process?
Hm, to differentiate this from the other one about favorite part of writing, I'm going to focus on the fanfiction part. And I think my favorite is like...... the way fic is a way of responding to the canon. Advancing an analysis of a character just in how you write them, addressing a criticism of the source text by poking at it in fic, digging into a piece of the worldbuilding that you've only gotten fragments of, or taking the characters and figuring out how to adapt them to another setting or a different path in life, even just highlighting a piece of it you really enjoy. I live for that shit! Over here in my adaptation corner.

9. Do you comment on stories you read?
Yes, but not as much as I wish I did...I got into better habits for a while but now I'm more inconsistent.
33. Do you want to be published someday?
Probably not. I get a lot of joy out of writing fanfiction, but it's been a long time since I had ideas or interest in writing original stuff, and getting published is a lot of work putting yourself out there, and then the best outcome is that now you're writing but it's got deadlines and serious commitments with money and contracts involved? No thank you. I think it would be fun to try writing and self-publishing a thing one (1) time just to see what it's like but I've thought that for years without doing anything about it, so it's really more of a silly daydream.

I am intrigued by "what's yours is mine, what's mine is yours", please tell me more!
this is the love like the galaxy ot3 fic: yuan shen/cheng shaoshang/huo buyi post-canon mess. i just think there's sooo much fun to be had with these three even if I'm slow to get this specific story about them into shape. (I'm writing smut for it! it's a learning curve). like, yuan shen and cheng shaoshang have such similar damage and they're ride or die and they don't understand each other at all, sometimes. yuan shen and huo buyi have that understanding by the end that they both care about shaoshang deeply & kind of for each other through that, and this one plays with that having deepened over a few years of post-canon friendship. but even if they care about each other, even if they love each other, css & hby are married, and ys had other plans.......and happiness has never been something he expected to have or changed his plans for.
anyway. snippet:
“Young Master, I tried to stop him—”
Yuan Shen made a sharp gesture. “No one could have stopped General Huo,” he said. “Send tea, and then everyone should leave us alone.”
“I don’t need tea,” Huo Buyi said.
Yuan Shen turned his attention to him, almost afraid to look. Huo Buyi met his eyes squarely as he did. He wore dark blue, striking but not as intimidating as his armor. It had occurred to him many, many times that Huo Buyi was a beautiful man. Mostly, this had been in the context of envy and competition, or later, satisfaction on Cheng Shaoshang’s behalf. Now, looking at the firm set of Huo Buyi’s mouth, he had the sense memory of what it felt like soft and yielding against his, and he felt like someone had turned his entire world sideways.
“We don’t need tea,” he agreed, his mouth dry. “No one is to disturb us.”

wip ask game! su qingluan in shl-verse becoming a ghost?
ha, you got to this before i remembered to edit in file names so for others this is "qingluan and lfm thing"
in the eps where zzs is captured in jinzhou, jinwang brings up a few qy characters as former friends/accomplices in some kind of courtyard oath and qingluan was one of those. i got to thinking about what i find fascinating about her, and what i find fascinating about the dept of the unfaithful, and then i got to thinking about how you could adapt qingluan and also have her death be also fake. so far I've mostly written the jinzhou backstory and how she physically got in to tell it to lfm, i just need to work out Everything Else

The thing I've actually been writing today is extremely secret (for an exchange) so have six sentences from the Love Like the Galaxy fic I'm rolling around in my head now I'm taking a break from the other one. In which: Cheng Shaoshang and Yuan Shen are the worst.
“It’s the middle of the day, and we’re in public,” he hissed, desperately trying not to let the wording settle into his mind.
“No one’s watching, and it isn’t public.” She smiled. “It’s my house, and I say it’s all right. Unless, of course, it’s too much for you.”
It was too much, but he wasn’t about to tell her that.

never have I ever! have you ever written a mystery/case fic?
i was going to say "yeah, of course i have!" but it turns out that i haven't written one on my own since the hp fandom days of yore.
i've done a fair amount in collab, though, and it's probably bc i am not the one designing the mysteries (i way overcomplicate things when i'm trying to).
every year i work on a big multivoice audio puzzle game/fic with the sentient hive, and especially the first two are straight up mysteries. i am one of the writers on the team, although i am not in charge of the main plot or puzzles
once during voiceteam, my team made a cluedo-inspired mystery
and i co-wrote this untamed casefic feat. juniors

2 million suns 👀👀👀
2 millions of suns is the silly doc title for the sequel to "millions of suns left", which i started writing before the latter was revealed in the exchange i wrote it for. zhou zishu (transported, in the previous fic, to an alternate reality where he died but, unlike his own reality, a lot of people he loves did NOT die) goes home to meet, in no particular order, the man who trained him in his own life and lost him in this one, his new boyfriend's parents, and the boy he loved like a brother whose death knocked him so flat he got transported to this reality (as far as he or the author can tell).
little excerpt:
He looked flushed and pleased, and a little like the gawky teenager he might once have been, an uncertain grin pulling at his lips. “Fix your face,” Zhou Zishu said, reaching up to try to smooth the corners of his smile out with his fingers. This, of course, only made the smile grow, and Zhou Zishu shook his face gently in reprimand.
Wen Kexing pulled out of his grip with a look like an offended cat. Zhou Zishu settled back against the desk, smiling, as he answered the door.
“Yes, what is it?” Wen Kexing said.
To Zhou Zishu’s relief, the voice that responded was unfamiliar. Young, probably male. “Wen-furen heard you were back,” he said. “She wanted to know if you were coming for dinner.”

Chengling nodded, and Zhou Zishu let him go. He left his disciple behind him, crossing the endless stretch of gravel between himself and his own shifu.
When they stood face to face, Qin Huaizhang asked, “Am I really still at Siji Manor?”
“You are.” He stood, shoulders straight, as Qin Huaizhang looked him over carefully. “But not,” Zhou Zishu said, watching a spark kindle in his shifu’s eyes, “in your own lifetime.”
“Little Sage,” Qin Huaizhang said slowly.

23. fics you wanted to write but didn’t - like lots but top of that is that i still feel feral about the yuan shen/cheng shaoshang/huo buyi fic and i like what I've written a lot but have made no more progress to actual Them Getting Together
12. favorite character to write about this year - oooh this is so hard to answer. maybe zhou zishu? he's so much my comfort place as a pov character in ways i can't really explain beyond that if i was doing an shl rp i would want to play zzs. chengling is fun in a different way in that i got to play with shaping his character in a specific circumstances and with him coming into his own as an adult
