Friends, I have failed you all. I've seen a lot of posts over the last week with a lot of great biographical detail about many of the flyers and aircrew who've been name-dropped so far in Masters of the Air - and I haven't seen a single thing about the one name that is directly in the center of this blog's lane.
In Part 2, returning from their mission to Trondheim, Cleven and Egan walk into the Interrogation hut and Egan accepts a cup of coffee from a woman he thanks as Tatty. Later on, at the dance, James Douglass remarks that he will be 'coming in hot' on one of the American Red Cross women on the other side of the room, and one of his friends asks "General Spaatz's daughter? Or the other one?"
Katherine "Tatty" Spaatz was a member of the American Red Cross Clubmobile service and the daughter of General Carl "Tooey" Spaatz, who commanded the Eighth Air Force on its move to England. (General Spaatz later moved to overall command of the entire Army Air Forces in the Europe Theatre of Operations, or ETO. He is, as the kids say, rather important.)
But we're not talking about him here. We're talking about her.
Katherine was 22 years old when she arrived in Europe with the Red Cross. (One of her traveling companions that trip was Kathleen Kennedy, daughter of former U.S. Ambassador Joseph P Kennedy Sr., also coming to serve overseas with the ARC.)
The American Red Cross's mission in Europe had many facets during the Second World War - in addition to activities we might think of today, like collecting blood, providing disaster relief at home and running first aid seminars, they were responsible for collecting and distributing packages for Prisoners of War.
They also operated large canteens like the Rainbow Corner club, a recreational facility in London where soldiers on leave could get a room for the weekend, a bite to eat, and a number of other amenities. Smaller clubs called Donut Dugouts provided a space where a serviceman could always be assured of a cup of hot coffee, a donut, and a pretty girl to talk to, specially recruited for being friendly, fair, approachable, and specially trained to be the girl next door overseas. In addition to these more permanent installations, they also operated the Clubmobile service, a mobile version of their popular Dugouts that moved operations into retooled Green Line Bus Company buses to take donuts and a taste of home to the front line.
Tatty, as she was called, worked on the Clubmobile "North Dakota" along with Julia "Dooley" Townsend, Virginia "Ginny" Sherwood, and Dorothy "Mike" Myrick. Life Magazine did a full article on their clubmobile in February of 1943, which you can read online at the link. There is another lovely blog post with pictures here. She also worked for a time in a more permanent post at the USAAF base at Snetterton Heath, and was later sent to France. You can read a little bit more about her and see more pictures at her bio page at the American Air Museum in Britain website.
If you'd like more information about Tatty, Helen, and women like them, as well as the Clubmobile service, consider reading the following:
Slinging Doughnuts for the Boys by James H. Madison
Battlestars & Doughnuts: World War II Clubmobile Experiences of Mary Metcalfe Rexford
War through the Hole of a Donut, by Angela Petesch
Goodnight, Irene (fiction) - Although this is a novel, it is based on Luis Alberto Urrea's mother's time as a Clubmobile worker and her personal papers.

since apparently blakely is the town whore how about blakely/everyone
[No, I don't know why it took the form of a questionably structured poem either]
Bucky he fucks
Cleven he sucks
Curtis he cuddles
Brady he snuggles
Ken he makes moan
Rosie, he groans
Demarco he almost takes home
Douglass he fingers
With Hambone he lingers
Winks leaves a hickey
With Kidd he gets sticky
He likes to praise Crosby
With Bubbles he's rowdy
And with Quinn and Bailey he doesn't pull rank
The nurses they sigh
Aww, fuck it's this guy
The horniest pilot ever to fly
Harding well knows
How Douglass does go
He does his duty to make sure he blows
Can I borrow your bike
Asks Davey to Mike
I haven't seen my girl lately
Can't lend it to you
He's busy with two
But that's just what it's like to be Blakely

💯👌🛳 please!
God I love this game, thanks for the ask!
From this fic rec ask game - please send asks! I love this.
💯 A fic that makes you think #writergoals
This Gale Cleven/OFC Masters of the Air fic, Every morning the sky by @loveduringthewar absolutely blew me away with the gorgeous languid poetry in every sentence. It's absolutely intimate and full of character. A pure joy.
👌🏼 A fic someone else recommended to you
It's this Cobb/Hoobler Band of Brothers fic, Make the Breaking Last. by - oh would you look at that - @almost-a-class-act . Which does seem a bit like flattery, but it genuinely was recced to me during a BoB watchparty I was having. And then we all had a little scream. It's snapshots of a friendship that punches so hard. Gorgeous.
🛳️ A fic that brought you aboard a new ship
I know I've recced this series before, but by GOD if I won't do it again. It was writerfan2013 (I do not know if they have Tumblr), who wrote this perfect Mike/Paddy series, Desert and Hope, which I must reread at least once a month. Mike/Paddy compels me SO much and at least 70% of that is directly due to this series.

i knew from the moment i learned that austin would have a southern accent in masters of the air that there would be confusion on if he was still doing the "elvis voice".
to be more specific the real person he is portraying major gale cleven has a "cowboy" accent and literally in the show points to a map and says he's from wyoming the cowboy state LMAOOOO. (to which i think he's actually nailing the accent)
so trust me i can understand how, especially since this is his first project outside of elvis why some may be a little ????
to follow up in response to his characters like gale or benny (the bikeriders) his characters aren't supposed to be dynamic if that makes sense. gale is described as a simple man, he's stoic he doesn't emote as much as say the other individuals. same goes for benny the director described him as an empty vessel, these other characters (tom, jodie, mike) there supposed to put all there energy into him and still want more from him. the character is emotionally checked out, and unavailable. the movie is supposed to ride off the fact that all these other characters are in your face but he isn't.
i hope that makes sense in a way...
GIRL lol... Yea, I've already seen the jokes....
I'll admit, some of the ones on Twitter have cracked me up a little bit... like this one lol... 😅🤣
.
.
😅🤣
They need to leave my men in that series ALONE! lol 😅😅
They're doing the BEST they can!!! 😭😭
It's sad when you have an article posting this:
All jokes ASIDE lol.... I think you're right though girl.... Knowing Austin, he worked to perfect that Major Cleven accent, cuz he's just a perfectionist like that. I think some jokers on Twitter just took it to mean that he's still using an "Elvis voice". 🙄 But the accent isn't even the same as Elvis!
Do these people need their hearing checked? 😅🤣
Thanks for your input too regarding MOTA and "The Bikeriders". I think you're right, he's probably just playing more subdued and stoic characters, and so that's probably the point. I didn't know that little tidbit about The Bikeriders, but it sounds like his character is kinda like the total complete opposite from Tom and Jodie's characters...and perhaps that's the point the director was making. 🤷🏾♀️
Look... I already know Austin... If a script calls for him to go HAM, he's gonna go HAM. But if it doesn't, then he's not. I don't think people have to worry in other words lol. But I'll make up my own mind when I see the film myself lol.
I'm enjoying MOTA....accents all over the place and all lol 😅🤣

Politically and socially engaged glass sculptor John 'sleepy' Moran - who is ALSO featuring in Netflix's show @blownawayseries Season 3! - shares more on his recent glass artworks: The Hollowed Family Mickey Mori is the happiest face of girth. Each one represents the viral spread of counterfeit creativity, the commodification of contemptible culture, and the friendliest fallacy of the free market. With each generous gesture, the members of The Hollowed Family offer a palpitating piece of their inner selves. Prodigious and pensive, they are naturally open, sharing everything that is hidden deep down in their visceral vestiges. Interested in seeing these in person or even owning your own? These glass sculptures are available BlowFish Glass!
