Mark O'Connor violin, Tony Rice guitar, Jerry Douglas dobro, Sam Bush mandolin, Mark Schatz bass and Bela Fleck banjo performing “Freeborn Man“. Merlefest early 1990's. ________________________ Freeborn Man Songwriters: Keith Allison and Mark Lindsay
I was born in the Southland
Some twenty odd years ago
I ran away for the first time When I was only four years old
I'm a freeborn man My home is on my back I know every inch of highway Every foot of back road Every mile of railroad track
I got a lady in Cincinnati
A woman in San Antone
And I always love the girl next door But any place is home
I'm a freeborn man Home is on my back I know every inch of highway Every foot of back road Every mile of railroad track
And I got me a worn out guitar
I carry an old tone sack
And I hocked it about two hundred times But I always get it back
I'm a freeborn man Home is on my back I know every inch of highway Every foot of back road Every mile of railroad track
Well, you may not like my appearance
You may not like my song
You may not like the way I talk But you sure like the way I'm gone
I'm a freeborn man Home is on my back I know every inch of highway Every foot of back road Every mile of railroad track
I was born in the Southland
Some twenty odd years ago
I ran away for the first time When I was only four years old
I'm a freeborn man Home is on my back I know every inch of highway Every foot of back road Every mile of railroad track

NC Trouting
Tumblr media
Wednesday I flew to Greensboro, NC to attend the big music fest in Wilkesboro called Merlefest. I been going to that for 16 or 17 years, and I often do a one night solo backpacking trip at nearby Stone Mountain State Park to kick things off. That includes a little mountain stream fishing.
Trouting in the southern mountains is about the toughest angling I do. The streams are steep and rocky, wading is difficult, and the streamsides are overgrown with all kinds of prickly plants. But it’s still my kind of fun.
The first fish I caught was a small rainbow, and since it was my birthday I called it my birthday rainbow. I caught three more trout, all browns. I believe all were stocked fish.
After fishing, I hiked into the woods and set up camp for the night. On Thursday I packed out and headed to the festival

REVIEW and Interview: Yasmin Williams "I Am A Pilgrim: Doc Watson at 100" @guitar_yaz #americanamusic #americanahighways #johnhjob #iamapilgrim
Yasmin Williams – I Am A Pilgrim: Doc Watson at 100 On March 3rd, 2023, Doc Watson would have celebrated his 100th birthday. And the 2023 edition of MerleFest, the Americana festival he founded in 1988, took place eight weeks later, marking its 35th year. Unfortunately, about half of the scheduled performances this year were rained out. Life gets teejus, don’t it. Doc and his soft-spoken genius…

So, Marcus King is going to be at MerleFest, and on the one hand, I want to go, because it’s Doc Watsons 100th Birthday Jam, but on the other hand, do I really want to go to MerleFest on the busiest night? But also, Tanya Tucker and Maren Morris and The Avett Brothers are gonna be there!

Chris Thile on Vocal Rest; Nickel Creek Postpones Shows through May 4
- “We are utterly heartbroken,” band says
Nickel Creek will not be performing again until May 29.
The band postponed all shows through May 4 - and pulled out of Merlefest - after Chris Thile damaged his vocal cords trying to sing through a sinus infection that morphed into the flu.
“His doctor, one of the country’s top voice specialists, says that he’d be risking far more serious damage if we proceeded and has prescribed a couple of weeks of rest and rehab,” the band said.
As “devoted concertgoers,” Thile, Sara Watkins and Sean Watkins said they understand what goes in to catching a show and deemed themselves “utterly heartbroken” at postponing, which they’d previously done only once in 34 years.
“We … will be doing everything in our power to make it up to you over the course of this year’s touring,” the group said. “We are so grateful for each and every one of you, and so, so, so sorry about the news.”
The tour picks back up May 29 in Alabama and continues through Oct. 21.
