The dramatic half hardy shrub Melianthus major (honey bush) needs protection from frost damage with a dry winter mulch. This architectural plant is ideal for a sunny, perennial border or dry garden. To stop it getting leggy, it is best cut back in early spring with the plant making up to 1.5m growth in one season.

For at least 1500 years the most popular ink in many parts of the world was oak gall ink, made by combining iron sulfate with tannin-rich extract of oak galls. Very surprisingly, the flowers of a South African genus of plants (Melianthus) produce a black nectar that is chemically pretty much identical to that ink.

Against a sunny, south wall at the Cruickshank Botanic Gardens, Aberdeen, Scotland, the sprawling sub-shrub Melianthus major (honey flower, peanut bush) makes an exotic feature. This plant has large glaucous, pinnate leaves that when bruised smell of marmite or peanut butter. It comes from South Africa so is not reliably hardy in colder areas and can be mulched in winter with light materials to protect the underground shoots for the next season.
