For a small handful of the many characters I have with you. We’re almost close to having half as many as we used to together. ;’D

ADRIANNE LEVIN

The love language my muse receives love in Acts of service. She has a hard time believing other expressions of affection otherwise, especially words of affirmation, because she’s used them -- primarily verbal flirtation -- to her advantage to gain things from others. Adrianne has done this especially as a method to move up in her career. The love language my muse expresses love in Despite being a skeptic when someone uses words of affirmation and physical touch with her as a way of expressing their feelings towards her, it’s how she does so with others along with what little quality time she can give. When she’s ingenuine it’s light touches that never linger more than she must to distract and comments made with a practiced yet forced smile, but when she means it her touch will linger more than it needs to and she’ll be more comfortable about it. The words of affirmation she’ll say with more seriousness as well. Acts of service when she can, but being as busy as she is it’s hard for her to take on more tasks or deviate from her own routine for the sake of someone else if it’s not something small. How demonstrative my muse is with love She can be very open about being with someone so long as the other person is comfortable with it, but she’s not about to be caught making out in public if there a lot of people around. Otherwise she’ll have no objections. One random love-language related headcanon Because she’s always been so busy, first with law school and then taking on a job for some income while in school, then with her career from the start to where she is now, Adrianne has never had much time for romance. This has caused her to have engaged in very few serious relationships, but many flings and one night stands. She prefers a casual relationship to something more serious because of the commitment the latter takes and she wants to be sure about the other person before investing too much emotionally into them.

ALEXIS CAINE

The love language my muse receives love in Acts of service and words of affirmation in the beginning, but as she eases into the relationship then physical touch more comfortably. However, being rather oblivious means that even if someone were to express affection and feelings in the form of either, until Alexis knows for certain that they have feelings for her she either won’t realize their actions are being driven by that or she’ll be confused as to why they’re being nice and/or physically close to her. There’s a chance she may recoil and/or flinch from physical touch received by someone she’s not close with. Overall, Alexis is likely to brush the other person off as just being oddly nice to her. The love language my muse expresses love in Acts of service, quality time, and words of affirmation. Anything she can do, especially little things, to make the other person’s life easier in some way. Cooking for someone and bringing them a thermos of coffee/tea/whatever their drink of choice is is a seemingly small gesture that she doesn’t expect to be read too deeply into, but will still be significant for her. If she’s able to help lessen the other person’s workload or lighten their emotional burdens in some way she’ll do that too. Alexis also makes the effort to spend time with someone as best she can given her unpredictable schedule, and when she spends time with someone she makes sure to be there fully. How demonstrative my muse is with love Physically, not really in public. She’s private and doesn’t like to draw attention to herself, and she gets shy and self-conscious about it. But she’ll try to compromise and be a little more expressive if that’s what would make the person happy although she will also try to compensate for this by giving more words of affirmation. Alexis is fine with a quick kiss or holding hands, but beyond that and she’ll probably get self-conscious. With acts of service and words of affirmation she’s more openly demonstrative. At home, over time, she’ll become more comfortable with physical touch. One random love-language related headcanon Alexis has never been in a serious relationship before. She’s experienced a brief fling, but because the emotional attachment wasn’t there and Alexis doesn’t typically like being touched in general, without the factor of emotional attachment to them the fling made her very uncomfortable and she ended things.

AVERSA LUTHIER

The love language my muse receives love in Physical touch. She likes words of affirmation and appreciates them, but has a hard time believing them too because of how she perceives herself, which is extremely poorly. The love language my muse expresses love in Physical touch because she doesn’t like touching people outside of the bedroom, so the more physical she is with someone in general the more feelings she has for them. Gift giving is another as she doesn’t like giving gifts to others who don’t mean anything to her. However, she often does this in the form of giving flowers or taking people out to lavish meals unless she happens to think of something more sentimental to give. How demonstrative my muse is with love She’s reluctant to in the beginning of a relationship as she doesn’t want to appear too attention and touch-starved, but once she’s comfortable then she’s much more open about it and doesn’t feel so self-conscious. One random love-language related headcanon Aversa has a difficult time separating physical intimacy with being emotionally vulnerable in that she can’t hide her feelings and inner turmoil behind physical acts of intimacy, so even someone engaging in a meaningless hookup with her will likely be able to tell she’s going through stuff internally. She envies those who can separate the two.

FIONA LAURENT

The love language my muse receives love in Words of affirmation so long as it’s not solely about her capabilities with technology as she’ll think nothing of them. She’s awkward with physical touch and squirms a bit when touched because her brain goes into overdrive from confusion. The love language my muse expresses love in Words of affirmation because she’s not good at giving sincere compliments and quality time. She blushes a lot and gets nervous the more she likes the other person, like some schoolgirl. Fiona finds this very embarrassing and annoying. But she’s happy to spend time with the other person whether they’re doing something together or doing their own things in the same space. How demonstrative my muse is with love Sort of. She tries to be, then gets nervous, and will want to extract herself from the situation. As the relationship lasts, however, Fiona will try to make herself endure her nervousness and get over it. One random love-language related headcanon When in a relationship her form of gift giving is developing some kind of software that the other person may find useful and that relates to an issue they may have expressed where software could ease the burden. Her ex did not appreciate it and it’s made her anxious about doing so again, but she’s a computer nerd through and through. Fiona has to mentally prepare herself for dates too in an attempt to alleviate her anxiety.

GISELLE MEIRELLES

The love language my muse receives love in Physical touch because she’s received copious amounts of gifts and countless words of affirmation that always felt hollow to her while acts of service comes with having money and fame that others seek to gain from knowing her. Those who have looked at her with admiration have done so because of what she can do, not who she is. Being touched is a very intimate thing for Giselle and because of that she prefers to not be touched by others, often keeping a physical distance from them and will try not to touch others in turn. The love language my muse expresses love in Words of affirmation and physical touch. A lot of what Giselle has to say isn’t kind -- she speaks harshly and with contempt whether intentional or not -- so when she makes the effort be sweeter and isn’t repulsed by touching someone it means she’s developed a fondness for them. How demonstrative my muse is with love Not very, but that can change over time. Because she’s so prominent in Olympic sports and the equestrian world, she has to be careful about the image she maintains. Once she’s loosened up a bit she can be more openly affectionate, but she usually waits for her partner to make the first move. One random love-language related headcanon She likes to be in charge in every aspect of her life possible, but when it comes to romance she’s much more timid and demure though also bratty, but it’s a side she tries very hard to conceal. Though she doesn’t actively seek out romantic partners of a specific type -- largely because she doesn’t have the time to do so -- she does have a preference for more dominant ones.

HELENA ASHFORDE

The love language my muse receives love in Physical touch, and she pays a great deal of attention to a person’s body language and their eyes more so than what exactly they’re saying. She knows better than anyone that people can say anything they wish and pitch their voice however they deem fit to make their words more convincing to others yet not mean it if they don’t want to. But she finds most people have a more difficult time hiding their intentions through physical touch and the expressiveness in their eyes. Acts of service is just as significant because it can give her an idea of how committed someone is to her or not. The love language my muse expresses love in Physical touch and quality time. She uses a little bit of everything to manipulate others to do or believe certain things that she wants them to, so because of this she doubts a potential partner would readily or easily believe when she tries to be genuine through physical touch and words of affirmation as she lies using both for a living, but still turns to physical touch instinctively. Helena also becomes more open to doing acts of service if a request is made of her from someone she has feelings for than anyone else whom she is quicker to brush off. How demonstrative my muse is with love Not at all unless it’s for show, but even then it’s in a restrained way with influence over how others perceive her displays of affection. She wouldn’t reject her partner for being more demonstrative, however, or rebuke their attempts if made to show off their feelings for her. Publicly, however, she’d be uncertain of how to react. One random love-language related headcanon She’s afraid to fall in love because even when she does her best to be honest, Helena doesn’t know how truthful she’s being having a shaky sense of self as it is. Because of this when she does find someone she’s serious about she tends to become more physical and likes to be in closer proximity to them.

ISRA ÖZKAYA

The love language my muse receives love in Acts of service because she believes it’s the way a person behaves and treats another that reveals their true feelings towards someone. Also having had suitors to meet as arranged by her father, some have been able to behave in a charming way, but in Isra’s opinion it’s too easy to fake affection in other ways. The love language my muse expresses love in Gift giving and words of affirmation because she doesn’t believe in giving shallow compliments if they aren’t meant. Isra also likes to get little, spontaneous gifts that make her think of someone as well. But to be someone who crosses her mind more than once and mean something to her can be a challenge as she brushes most people off due to suspecting them to be lying or wanting something from her. How demonstrative my muse is with love Somewhere in between of not at all and is very demonstrative. She doesn’t go out of her way to show affection, but she won’t hold herself back when she feels like it either. Sometimes she won’t mind an audience and other times she will. Isra is fickle about public displays, but when alone with her partner she can be much more demonstrative. Sometimes. Or she’ll tease and tempt with the promise of physical touch. One random love-language related headcanon She thinks expensive gifts for the sake of showing off are tacky, but she’s received a number of them from potential suitors. She sold what was of value and threw out what she either couldn’t get away with selling or wasn’t worth anything. Isra also forgot who gave her which gifts.

MAXINE SCIARRA

The love language my muse receives love in She doesn’t really receive love unless she sees a way it can benefit her. Often times the feelings are unrequited as she rarely experiences romantic feelings. That said, Maxine would recognize acts of service more easily and readily than anything else.

The love language my muse expresses love in Quality time and words of... back-handed affirmation. It’s the best anyone will get from her. Maybe a little bit of physical touch, but more like light touches here and there and rarely publicly. If Maxine has feelings for someone she’ll be a little nicer to them and a little more considerate of their values and feelings. But with Maxine “a little” is still noticeable. Maxine can even possibly be swayed to compromise, but that can require coaxing. She

How demonstrative my muse is with love Not at all. No acts of service, per se, but she’ll be more open to a small request from her partner whereas she doesn’t care what others want if it’s not what she wants as well. Maxine might add in a back-handed compliment (or even a more straightforward one, but rarely) if she’s in a particularly good mood, but it’d be whispered to her partner if they’re in the company of others. If it’s only a physical relationship though, Maxine will be more open to physicality so long as the other person knows not to get attached and she doesn’t want anything more. She will, at the very least, spend a little more time with someone so long as they’re okay with them each doing their own thing.

One random love-language related headcanon Maxine has engaged in flings here and there, but nothing ever serious. She’s had neither the time nor interest in her past (brief) partners enough to take things beyond a physical relationship. Anytime someone wanted more from her she laughed at them and left. During the flings she’s very dominant both in and out of bed and tends to cut right to the chase when she speaks, preferring the physicality above everything else since anything else has more of a chance (in her opinion) of involving emotions later. She’s a dominatrix through and through as Maxine loves her power and being in control all the time.

NATALIA SANTOS

The love language my muse receives love in Quality time and gifts. Natalia spends a lot of time alone and only interacts with others when she’s receiving a new contract or for other business related reasons. While she’s pretty content or at least accustomed to being alone, she is a little lonely but won’t throw herself at the first person that shows her attention either. Natalia will definitely go for someone who makes time for her and gives spontaneous gifts since it means the person was thinking of her. The love language my muse expresses love in Gift giving in the worst way possible except to Natalia it’s not bad just... Unique. She may steal things from the people she kills if she likes the object or she’ll gift the bullet or other weapon she used to kill someone with. If Natalia doesn’t give a strange (and illegal) gift she’ll get the other person takeout. She can’t cook well, so that’s the closest anyone would get to receiving a meal from her as a form of act of service. She may, however, gift other random things like a stuffed animal, keychain, etc. that make her think of the other person. Or it may not make her think of them at all and they’re simply things she likes that she then feels like giving to someone else whether they’d like it or not if she took the time to consider that. How demonstrative my muse is with love Very. Natalia’s shameless, but she’ll respect the other person’s boundaries. Sort of. She’ll do her best, but she may trip up a little sometimes. One random love-language related headcanon One time while she was still in the training academy for Vanesco, she met a girl whom she liked but had no idea how to express it in a remotely appropriate way. Instead of confessing her feelings or doing something more typical like longing glances and the like to indicate them, Natalia told the girl she was going to kill her because “You’re hot and it throws me off” as the girl was also her competition by virtue of also being apart of the organization. Natalia gifted her a half-drunk coffee of the same kind that the girl favored so she’d know that Natalia liked her, but also was also very annoyed by her too as they were meant to be rivals.

NEVRA KARTAL

The love language my muse receives love in She’s kind of skeptical of it all, but quality time is the best option to go with. At least if nothing else it gives the other person a chance to try and convince her of their sincerity or at least get her to slowly realize that maybe they’re spending time with her because they like her. Which in turn would make her rethink their interactions in the past. The love language my muse expresses love in Physical touch that is clearly meant to be intimate or shared between romantic partners. Not necessarily sexual, but things like holding hands, playing with the other person’s hair, resting her legs on their lap, etc. Things she’d never do with anyone else. How demonstrative my muse is with love Once she’s confident that the relationship is genuine and she’s not being used for money and/or status by association or to use her as a connection to reach her family then Nevra will become more open about putting her relationship on display. Until that moment she may be more reserved about it. One random love-language related headcanon Once, when she was younger and thought she knew much more about love than she really did, Nevra was convinced she was in love with a boy. He was a classic Bad Boy who took her on joy rides, had her sneak out late at night to meet up with him, etc. Her parents warned her to stay away from him, but of course that had the opposite effect of her wanting to see him more. She gave him all the time in the world that she could and was draped on his arm constantly, but she was blind to how manipulative he was and how he was trying to use Nevra’s status and wealth to so he could get away with petty crimes. She learned later on when they got caught and her parents paid a lot of money to spin the story to be less scandalous for the family’s image and he angrily confessed when she tried to visit him in jail and apologize but wouldn’t help him get out.

RHEA MORETTI

The love language my muse receives love in Physical touch. Rhea loves those light or lingering, gentle touches, which she’ll readily reciprocate, and having her hair played with idly. While she doesn’t hang on to miscellaneous things much, she will hang onto such a gift if there had been sentimental value attached to it when it was given to her. She may not always have a place to display the gift, but she’ll hold onto it nonetheless. On the flip side, if the relationship ends on a sour note she’ll likely get rid of the gift(s). Acts of service is another though something where there’s still a chance Rhea will misinterpret the act as the person simply being nice. The love language my muse expresses love in Words of affirmation. She’s quick to express admiration and praise when deserved or if something comes to mind that she wants to say (i.e. she’s not going to force it and say something for the sake of saying it). When speaking to a partner or someone of romantic interest it’s impossible for Rhea to hide the way her face lights up. Physical touch is a close second. How demonstrative my muse is with love Not overly demonstrative, but it’s unmistakable when she’s in the company of her partner or someone she’s interested in whether or not she’ll admit to it in the case of the latter. One random love-language related headcanon While Rhea threw out many of the things her exes have given her, when her last ex-husband was forced to leave her with Jackal, the dog (it had chosen her in a custody battle) that she’d gotten him as an anniversary gift, Rhea initially wanted to give him up as she didn’t think she’d have the time to take care of him nor had as much motivation to do so as she thought he deserved. What made her change her mind was when she’d brought Jack to the shelter and while she didn’t miss her ex-husband she started crying in her car anyway and Jack tried to cheer her up. She realized the dog didn’t deserve to be abandoned and was already attached to her, plus Jack helped her maintain a routine even when she didn’t want to some days. So she drove back home and while she doesn’t care for the origin of how Jack came to be apart of her life she loves him all the same. Her partner is going to need Jack’s approval as well (in a choice of a partner vs. Jack she’d pick Jack). Although he loves receiving attention from everyone, he’s picky about whom he actually respects and will listen to/obey and accept in his small family.

SEVERIN VOLKE

The love language my muse receives love in They don’t because they’re kind of dumb and if they do realize someone has an interest in them they’ll pretend they’re clueless. The only way to force Severin to face feelings is to be upfront and tell them. It’s sometimes frustrating for others to have to be the one to confess, but Severin is a coward if the feelings are mutual or cruel if they don’t return the feelings. But if someone manages to get Severin to 1) acknowledge that there are feelings involved and 2) get them to realize they reciprocate those feelings then quality time is what they appreciate most. The love language my muse expresses love in Well... They won’t be so quick to try and kill the other person? Severin is horrible at it. They’ll tease and annoy mercilessly, especially with trying to make the other person jealous. It’s all to deflect from their own feelings which they’d rather ignore entirely than address. Severin will engage in more banter, and joke around more, but still pretend they have no idea that they have feelings let alone express them. Despite all of that, Severin won’t sleep with anyone they don’t have an interest in so if they get into bed with someone there’s some degree of interest. However, they’re not gentle in bed either so never expect that. How demonstrative my muse is with love Not at all and very demonstrative in their own way. They’ll be more teasing and seek out the other person’s company more, but they aren’t one for PDA and grand or soft gestures of intimacy and romance. One random love-language related headcanon When they were dating Valdis, a relationship they sort of fell into without really acknowledging it verbally, Severin was rough in bed. It was something Valdis accepted and could easily keep up with given that neither of them had to worry about hurting the other too much, but one time while they were kissing Severin went too far and bit too hard into Valdis’s lip causing it to bleed. Valdis pulled a gun on them. Only one of them found the whole thing humorous and started laughing: it was Severin. They broke up not too long after although for bigger reasons, but Valdis being tired of Severin’s antics and physicality in the relationship were factors.

VALDIS SOLVEIG

The love language my muse receives love in Quality time and physical touch. Although she spends much of her time alone since being separated from friends and family in the past, Valdis takes comfort from being physically close with another person and spending time with them. What she’d appreciate the most though is someone who enjoys being out in nature with her: walks, hiking, races/chases through the woods, swimming in lakes, etc. On a side note, while she knows it’s not for everyone and wouldn’t ask someone else to do it with her, Valdis likes to take naps in the woods sometimes. The love language my muse expresses love in Physical touch. She can match however gentle or rough her partner is, but Valdis is instinctively more gentle although that’s not to say she can’t be a little rough in the bedroom (scratching, biting, mostly). She also is a big snuggler in bed. Valdis’s physicality in a relationship isn’t restricted to intimate gestures either, but also a stronger instinct and desire to act as a shield to protect her partner if they’re in physical danger. How demonstrative my muse is with love Moderately. She can be a little reserved as she feels no need to advertise her relationships, but Valdis will seek out physical touch to a degree whether it be hand-holding, shoulders/knees touching, or just being generally close. One random love-language related headcanon Valdis will spend what time she can being around her partner whether they interact or are doing their own individual things while in each other’s company. She’ll often have part of her body close to or touching the other person as well if possible. Additionally, possessing a stronger sense of smell than humans, Valdis likes to be the big spoon in bed so she can nuzzle her face against her partner’s neck or the top of their head and will find falling asleep to being near them and the familiarity of their scent comforting.

Where California politicians stand on Palestine

The majority of Democrats in DC, despite their voter base being overwhelmingly in support of a ceasefire, refuse to disavow the genocide in Gaza or call for ceasefire.

They are able to do this, to disregard the outrage of their constituency, because they feel certain that no matter how many letters we send, we will show up and vote for them when the time comes. They are certain their actions have no consequences.

Senator Alex Padilla received about $31k from Israeli lobby groups. He refuses to call for a ceasefire. This was his going rate to enable genocide.

Senator Laphonza Butler was appointed in Oct 2023 after the death of Diane Feinstein, who was pro-Israel. No campaign finance info on file. She refuses to call for a ceasefire. Perhaps she's waiting for her payout.

12/52 California congressional representatives are Republicans. None have called for ceasefire. Palestinian genocide is core to the Republican platform.

Of the 40 Democrat representatives, only 11 have called for ceasefire. The following CA Democrat representatives have called for ceasefire. They were not swayed by money received from Israeli lobby groups.

Documentary in a shifting landscape

Salesman

America was in turmoil entering the 1960s. The threat of nuclear war still loomed large, and there was an overall loss of confidence in social institutions when compared to pre-War American society. The film industry itself was in the process of being dismantled from its then-monopolistic structure. As a result, documentary filmmaking emerged as a response, and a way for filmmakers to target these institutions more intimately. The Maysles Brothers, whose initial claim to fame came from shooting celebrities like the Beatles and Joseph Levine, shifted their attention to a group which was more grounded in reality: thus, Salesman (1969) was created.

Salesman follows the excursions of four door-to-door Bible salesmen in middle class America. The group travels from Boston to Florida as they try to sell their books to lower-income Catholics. Both the merchants and the customers are struggling to make ends meet, which results in low income for the men. Struggling most is Paul, who tries and fails multiple times at a simple sale. However, the majority of the people they interact with are housewives and the elderly, each with their own issues.

The cinema vérité style which is present in the film forces the film to be observational in its depictions of middle-class citizens across America. In my initial viewing, I imagined it would be a commentary on the church and religion as an industry, but as I came to find out, it was more of a critique of capitalism in the 1960s, and how there are no true winners when pursuing the unattainable American Dream.

Dont Look Back

Dont Look Back (1967) follows folk singer Bob Dylan during his U.K. tour in 1965. Dylan’s iconography sometimes precedes him in modern day: either, he is held to the highest regard as a poet and a preacher, or he is mocked for his pretentious nature. This film depicts an accurate portrait of each of those sentiments. Dylan’s obvious social intelligence often conflicts with his ego, and his abrasive nature clouds his often progressive views about social issues and human nature. As described by Richard Porton, “Whether Dylan is mocking the inane questions posed to him by hack journalists, engaging in what Robert Polito terms a ‘venomous pissing contest’ with pop star Donovan, or casually paving the way for a breakup with then-girlfriend Joan Baez, he is never, even though he’s alternatively charming and nasty, anything less than a charismatic presence,” (Porton, 24).

This film, also shot in the cinema vérité style, allows viewers an unobstructed portrayal of the youth’s mindset in the mid-1960s. Dylan and Baez were the faces of the folk-revival movement, and their poetry reflected the turning of the political tides. Followers of the rising counterculture movement, like Dylan, questioned authority and were suspicious of industries like the government and the media. Dylan never wanted to be a savior; yet, voicing his political views with such integrity and determination garnered him a following. Dont Look Back is, at its core, a commentary on the politics of the entertainment industry.

Okay so everyone else is doing their post reboot ideas so I might as well throw my hat into the ring.

So basically, the story picks up like 5-6 years after the reboot ended. Ben never took off the watch and he ended up getting all full of himself in the meanwhile, and got into a private school and is just insufferable as hell, and then he comes back for summer break. More under the cut:

Ben:

Pretentious as hell

In a private school out of town because he started studying hard and got a scholarship

Atrocious fashion sense, he wears his school uniform except the sweater is tied over his shoulders and his hair is omniverse length but ~styled~ and he has these STUPID $200 wayfarer frame sunglasses on all the time and I HATE HIM SO MUCH-

Thinks he’s hot shit but he’s actually just shit

Gwen:

After she graduated elementary school she crashed HARD, total gifted kid syndrome, is struggling with schoolwork and gets Cs and Ds

Undiagnosed ADHD because I’m projecting on her

No magic/Anodite powers, relies on technology to fight but she’s kinda weak

Hair up in a half ponytail, may or may not be greasy

Had a falling out with Ben because she resented that their roles had switched and she was no longer the smart kid, they don’t hang out anymore

Had a nasty nasty NASTY breakup with Kevin, everyone heard about it, blows were exchanged, they hate each other’s guts (I love Gwevin I just don’t think it’d work out here)

Kevin:

Works at Vin Ethanol’s garage

Tons of piercings & jewelry

The only main character with a brain cell

All tennysons are banned from being within a mile of anything he’s working on because they always end up wrecking them

Despite his best efforts, his car keeps getting destroyed in increasingly over the top and graphic ways

Idk if he’s osmosian or not, or maybe even half whatever bashmouth’s species is, either way he gets to keep the armor thing

Playlist includes bashmouth, bootleg and Humongoraptor because I love them

Finds Ben annoying, dislikes Glitch because he keeps eating his car parts, and Gwen because of the whole breakup thing

He hangs out with Rook a lot. They’re mechanic buddies

Rook

Idk how but he’s on Earth in this and knows all the others

He’s the only one of the main characters that can get along with pretty much everyone (Even Ben, despite finding him very annoying)

This results in him being a messenger a lot because these idiots won’t talk to each other

Gay and dating scout and may or may not have some chemistry with Ben going on

Has the proto-tool and proto-tech armor, while he keeps the former on him at all times unlike canon, he actually has multiple sets on normal clothes

Doesn’t get why Ben keeps getting all worked up about sumo slammers

He actually gets bullied a lot because of his weird mannerisms and appearance while wearing his ID mask, and later just for being an alien

Thus his self-esteem is deeply tied to his mechanical abilities and heroism and if he fails he thinks he’s the worst person ever

Glitch:

Baby boy. Baby

Actually dislikes being treated like a little kid and not taken seriously

Fiercely loyal to Ben and stays by his side no matter what

Still he’s annoyed by Ben’s behavior and the way he treats him like he can’t do anything on his own, but he doesn’t say anything about it until later in the story

Naive but smart

Nice to pretty much everyone

Has cravings for metal a lot and used to eat Kevin’s car parts until he got caught, idk if he can eat normal food

He feels sorry for eating Kevin’s car parts but he doesn’t know how to apologize without making Kevin mad

Has to learn to set boundaries and stand up for himself

Grandpa Max:

Feels sad that his grandkids and Kevin have all drifted apart on bad terms

He’s the only one that both stays with Ben and is willing to call him on his bullshit

A mentor to both Rook and Kevin

Everyone in the main cast likes him and goes to him with their problems which can be very emotionally taxing to him at times

A bit of a boomer but he’s trying his best

Ex-plumber but really really doesn’t want to get the kids involved and disagrees with Phil on this

He could fuck off and spend the rest of his life being a ruler of a bunch of planets but he can’t leave well enough alone

The story goes like this: There’s a new threat on town (possibly the highbreed) and Phil decides he needs a hero team to get rid of it. He gathers Ben, Gwen, Glitch, Kevin and Rook all together to tackle this, and the group refuses to work together. Too bad an invasion is already happening, so now they have to put their differences aside and work together anyway before the whole world gets totally destroyed.

TL;DR a bunch of teenagers who fucking hate each other have to come together and save the world.

Reflections on a Study Abroad Trip to South Africa

I recently returned from a Cleveland State University study abroad trip to South Africa with 15 students from the Maxine Goodman Levin College of Urban Affairs and the Monte Ahuja College of Business, and professors Robert Simons and Christine Dickinson.

Initially, I had hesitated going, fearing it might seem like an easy excuse for a trip abroad. However, I thought better of that hesitancy given my priorities as dean, one of which is to drill deep into what it means to be a college of urban affairs in an era of globalization. It is important for us to ask: How can we better understand our urban mission beyond Northeast Ohio?

Truth be told, I also wanted to see how a country that occupied a great deal of my focus and attention in my younger years was faring.

I, like many around the world, was horrified by apartheid and the incarceration of Nelson Mandela and his colleagues on Robben Island. I was moved to tears when Mandela and other African National Congress leaders were released in 1990. I reveled in unfolding democratic experiments such as the Truth and Reconciliation Commission, which was empaneled to address the torture and executions carried out during the apartheid years, as well as the election of Mandela as the first popularly elected president of a new multiracial South Africa!

When I visited the country in 2005, South Africans had settled into nation building and the attendant challenges — though heavily tinged with optimism toward the future. I enjoyed the richness and beauty of the people and land. I was not blind to the contradictions of a nation with a growing economy juxtaposed with intense rural and urban poverty. I left with the hope that South Africans would use their collective strength, wisdom and national treasure to build a bright future for all. As is the case with democracies, the reality of unforeseen economic and political turbulence can often get in the way of straightforward progress.

I don’t believe I had preconceived ideas of what South Africa would look like to an outsider in 2018. The hustle and bustle of the people certainly remained. Many people from surrounding countries migrate there to look for work, and one can feel a palpable tension in how those looking for economic opportunity are viewed and treated. Interesting from a policy and planning perspective is that downtown Johannesburg, with its tall sky scrapers, has been effectively abandoned and taken over by migrant squatters.

Our group spent a great deal of time at the University of Witswaterand, interacting with faculty and students in the College of Architecture and the Built Environment. What a treat! The faculty helped us understand the economic and political challenges facing this amazing nation and the bright, world-class students convinced us they are up to taking on these challenges. Note: The university has a great faculty and staff commissary, but Elements (the restaurant on the CSU campus) still rules!

Despite great poverty, South Africa is slowly growing a black middle class that is buying goods and services at a pace unimaginable a short 30 years ago. We visited retail shopping centers that would be the envy of any American suburb and saw a diverse range of shoppers. Again, however, this must be viewed through a lens of great underlying poverty and income inequality.

We also visited Mandela’s home in Johannesburg and left our written respects on stones outside the compound. Professors Simons and Dickinson held up the CSU standard!

On the fifth day of the trip, we stopped at the Apartheid Museum and the current exhibit featuring Mandela. It was a very powerful experience and prompted a question: Mandela is everywhere – on currency, public art, in the streets – befitting given his sacrifice and service to the nation. I wonder what Mandela would have made of this attention? I suspect he would have been bemused and quick to deflect attention to his colleagues — the men and women, known and unknown, who sacrificed for South Africa.

Talk about adaptive reuse: We visited Chaf-Ponzi, a shabeen (essentially a bar, but in the past defined as an “illicit” club) built around a decommissioned cooling tower in Soweto. We found an authentic food and entertainment experience that draws tourists and locals alike. I learned that Soweto is a complicated community. It is at once extremely poor but also a community of middle-class strivers, all living in close proximity.

On reflection, my trip to South Africa was an amazing reconnection with a dynamic society. The trip also allowed me to see this society through the eyes of our students and colleagues. They asked the right questions and were not afraid to engage fully with a society different from their own. This is the true value of the study abroad experience—one that none of us will soon forget.

Jimmy Ruffin

Jimmy Lee Ruffin (May 7, 1936 – November 17, 2014) was an American soul singer, and elder brother of David Ruffin of the Temptations. He had several hit records between the 1960s and 1980s, the most successful being the Top 10 hits "What Becomes of the Brokenhearted" and "Hold On (To My Love)".

Biography

Early life

Jimmy Ruffin was born in 1936 in Collinsville, Mississippi, to Eli, a sharecropper, and Ophelia Ruffin. He was approaching his fifth birthday when his younger brother David was born. As children, the brothers began singing with a gospel group, the Dixie Nightingales.

In 1961, Jimmy became a singer as part of the Motown stable, mostly on sessions but also recording singles for its subsidiary Miracle label, but was then drafted for national service. After leaving the Army in 1964, he returned to Motown, where he was offered the opportunity to join the Temptations to replace Elbridge Bryant. However, after hearing his brother David, they hired him for the job instead so Jimmy decided to resume his solo career. Ruffin recorded for Motown's subsidiary Soul label, but with little success.

Career

In 1966, he heard a song about unrequited love written for The Spinners, and persuaded the writers that he should record it himself. His recording of "What Becomes of the Brokenhearted" became a major success. The song reached #7 on the Billboard Hot 100 and #6 on the R&B Chart. It also initially reached #8 in the UK singles chart, rising to #4 when it was reissued in the UK in 1974. "What Becomes of the Brokenhearted" remains Ruffin's best-known song. It was the lead single from his debut album Jimmy Ruffin Sings Top Ten (released as The Jimmy Ruffin Way in the UK), which was released on the Motown's Soul subsidiary label in 1967. Follow-up singles in America were successful, with "I've Passed This Way Before" and "Gonna Give Her All The Love I've Got" in late 1966 and early 1967.

Ruffin's second album, Ruff 'n' Ready, was released in 1969. It contained the song "Don't You Miss Me a Little Bit Baby", which made the lower parts of the Billboard Hot 100 (#68) and was a Top 30 hit on the R&B Charts, peaking at #27. As a solo artist, it would prove to be Ruffin's last significant chart appearance in America for many years, and his very last significant charting record for Motown in the US. The song was also released as the B-side to "What Becomes of the Brokenhearted" when it was reissued in 1974.

As Ruffin found success in the United States difficult to sustain, he began to concentrate instead on the British market. In 1970, "Farewell Is A Lonely Sound", "I'll Say Forever, My Love" and "It's Wonderful (To Be Loved By You)" each made the UK Top Ten, and he was voted the world's top singer in one British poll. He also teamed up with brother David to record the album I Am My Brother's Keeper, a modestly successful 1970 album for Motown that included the songs "When The Love Hand Comes Down", "Your Love Was Worth Waiting For" and a cover of Ben E. King's "Stand by Me". His third solo album for the label, The Groove Governor, was released in 1970, and did not fare as well as his previous two albums.

Following the success of his initial hits, Ruffin found it hard to maintain an identity, as most of his songs were later covered by other Motown artists, most prominently "Everybody Needs Love", a hit when covered by Gladys Knight & The Pips for their 1967 debut album of the same name, "Maria (You Were The Only One)", a hit for Michael Jackson and "If You Let Me," a minor hit for Eddie Kendricks. In addition, he had recorded the first version of The Temptations hit "Beauty Is Only Skin Deep".

He then left Motown, and recorded for the Polydor and Chess labels, where he recorded "Tell Me What You Want." In 1980, Robin Gibb of the Bee Gees produced his album Sunrise and the hit single "Hold On To My Love", which reached #10 in the US and #7 in the UK, on the RSO label.

In the 1980s, Ruffin moved to live in Great Britain, where he continued to perform successfully. In December 1984 he collaborated with Paul Weller of The Style Council for his benefit single "Soul Deep", produced to raise money for the families of striking miners affected by the UK miners' strike. This went under the name of The Council Collective and Jimmy appeared with Paul on Radio 1 to say he is involved because his father worked down the mines and "he understands the suffering."

In 1986 he collaborated with the British pop group Heaven 17, singing "A Foolish Thing To Do" and "My Sensitivity" on a 12" EP record. He took part in recording for Ian Levine's Motown revival label, Motorcity Records, in the late 1980s and early 1990s. He recorded duets with both Maxine Nightingale and Brenda Holloway. Later, Ruffin hosted a radio show in the UK for a time, and became an anti-drug advocate following the 1991 drug overdose death of his brother David. Ruffin was portrayed by Lamman Rucker in the 1998 mini-series The Temptations.

Later life and death

Following the 2010 release - on CD for the first time - of his 1970 album I Am My Brother's Keeper, Ruffin had been writing and recording songs for a new album that he had planned to release during 2013. It was not finished at the time of his death.

In 2012, a compilation album titled There Will Never Be Another You, including his hit songs "What Becomes of the Brokenhearted", and "Hold On To My Love", had been released.

Ruffin lived in the area of Las Vegas, Nevada. On October 17, 2014, it was reported that he was gravely ill and had been taken into an intensive care unit at a Las Vegas hospital. He died on November 17, 2014, in Las Vegas, aged 78.

Ruffin is buried at Palm Memorial Park Northwest Cemetery, Las Vegas, Clark County, Nevada in the Garden of Eternal Life Section.

Family

His siblings are Davis (David) Eli, Rita Mae (Marie), Rosa, and Quincy B (all deceased). His children are Arlet, Philicia, Jimmie Ray (deceased), Jimmy Jr., Ophelia and Camilla.

The 1960's and the decline in confidence of public institutions. (Franco Morgante)

The 1950’s and 60’s were a time where consumerism and distrust of public institutions started to become more prominent amongst the working class of the western world. Two films that look to show the real-world opinions of the working class are Salesman and Chronicle of a Summer. Salesman follows a group of four salesmen as they travel the west coast trying to sell bibles and encyclopedias to low-income neighborhoods. The film features very little narration and primarily focuses on showing the salesmen in action. According to an article from Maxine Haleff.” The Maysles shot Levine informally in many private and public situations. They did not ask for a release until after they had shown Levine the unedited footage”, (Haleff, 19). The limited editing of this film is what gives this film a distinct identity as it feels a lot more realistic and less curated than other documentaries. Unfortunately, many of their attempted sales end up unsuccessful for various reasons like some of the customers being uncomfortable around them. What's fascinating though is that since this documentary takes place during the 60’s, which is a time when religion was much more prevalent in the lives of the average American, yet many were still unsure if they should purchase these bibles. This could mean that around the 60’s people started to distrust religion as an institution.

According to a survey from Henry E. Brady & Thomas B. Kent, the trust in religious institutions has been decreasing overtime. And later on in the article they say, “The story for each institution is probably somewhat different: for religion it is the rise of the Christian right” (Brady & Kent, 18). This time period was also dominated by the rise of the Christian right and how they believed that America’s culture was being destroyed by the degenerate counterculture. But with this rise in cultural power, religious institutions became more and more of a politicized institution rather than a norm-enforcing institution. This could be the reason why many of the potential sales in the documentary ended in failure, as the people may have thought that these men were just trying to get rich off of them rather than trying to spread the word of God. This film displays this lack of faith by showing the salesmen going to different states throughout the New England area to show that this distrust isn’t just a phenomenon in one state.

In Chronicles of a Summer, sociologist Edgar Morin and anthropologist Jean Rouch try to figure out what was the key to happiness amongst the French working class. The film is structured like a traditional documentary with famous conventions like interviewers on the streets and quick cuts between the responses of the various interviewees. They also heavily emphasize that the reactions of everyone that is interviewed is a real-life reaction and not rehearsed. This was in response to a lot of documentaries at the time, as according to an article from Drew Associates” They were dull. Most all relied heavily on on-camera correspondents reading scripts, telling viewers what they were watching and what they should think about what they were watching. “Real life never made it onto the screen,” he lamented” (Drew Associates, paragraph 2). In one section the interviewers directly ask random people off the street what makes them happy. Some said it was their marriage, some said they were just happy to be alive, and some said their happiness depends on how much money they have. This last quote seems to be the most revealing as it could be related to the consumerist mindset that had just started to get popular. With all the new innovations like television and cars becoming more accessible, for many people it seemed that happiness was tied to material possessions. So, this could be the reason for why some believed that having lots of money was the key to their happiness.

This comment could also relate to working class confidence in the economy. As housing and other necessary products get more expensive, it could be that the working class of France thinks that money is the key to happiness as it is necessary just to survive. This feeling seems to be shared by the American working class as well, as trust in America’s economic institutions seems to be heavily dependent on the strength of the economy. According to the article from Henry E. Brady & Thomas B. Kent, “In addition, the GDP growth rate is positively associated with about 30 percent of the variance over time in confidence in Wall Street, 11 percent in business confidence, and 11 percent in confidence in banks” (Brady & Kent, 8). Since many people see institutions like Wall Street and banks as ones with near unlimited amounts of money, it seems that people are quick to blame them once the economy starts to fail.

And while labor institutions like unions have a generally more positive view in the eyes of the working class, they also aren’t immune from economic ridicule. According to Henry E. Brady & Thomas B. Kent, “The unemployment rate is negatively associated with about 24 percent of the variance in trust in labor, but there is no significant correlation of confidence in labor with growth rate”, (Brady & Kent, 8). This quote displays how even labor unions will be blamed for poor economic performance and can cause a lack of faith in even the more respected public institutions. But the feelings of the French working class and American working class seem to have similarities. It is a little difficult for this documentary to display this lack of faith in these institutions as the film only shows the people the interviewers are able to get on the streets. Which can introduce some bias in the findings.

While both of these documentaries aren’t perfect, they do display how confidence in public institutions started to decline around the 60’s when moral institutions like religion started to become more political. And the economic institutions started to be blamed for the struggles of the working class.
