Keisuke Kinoshita's 1949 version of the much-adapted ghost story, Yotsuya Kaidan, jettisoned the supernatural in favor of the psychological, turning the protagonist, Iemon, into a somewhat more sympathetic, even tragic figure. But ten years later, Nobuo Nakagawa went straight for the horror: a bloodthirsty, ambitious Iemon (Shigeru Amachi), who doesn't even need Naosuke's (Shuntaro Emi) Iago-like promptings to descend straight into murder. In fact, if you try to apply psychology to Nakagawa's Iemon, you'll run up against some blank walls: It's hard to understand why Iemon in this version even bothers to settle down to a life of umbrella-making after his slaughter of Oiwa's father and his complicity in Naosuke's dispatch of Yomoshichi (Ryuzaburo Nakamura), his rival for Osode's (Noriko Kitazawa) hand. By this time, Iemon is steeped in blood so far that "returning were as tedious as go o'er," to put it in Macbeth's terms. In this version, the ghosts of Oiwa (Katsuko Wakasugi) and Takuetsu (Jun Otomo) are particularly real and vengeful, not just phantoms of Iemon's imagination, as in Kinoshita's version. They lead Iemon into slaughtering Ume (Junko Ikeuchi) and her father and finally to his own doom. Nakagawa's film lacks the subtlety of Kinoshita's, but in the end I think that's for the good: What you want from a ghost story is catharsis, not irony.

    Ten days ahead of its theatrical release in Japan, Toho Movie's official YouTube channel has started streaming the first five minutes of the forthcoming live-action film adaptation of Kiminori Wakasugi's (Detroit Metal City) comedy manga KAPPEI .

        In addition, a collaboration PV featuring the film's theme song "Tekketsu Gravity" performed by Takanori Nishikawa and Momoiro Clover Z is also streamed.

        The manga was serialized in Hakusensha's Young Animal from 2011 to 2014, then compiled in six tankobon volumes. Its story centers on a group of "Doomsday Warriors" who believed in Nostradamus' prophecy and devoted their lives to rigorous training far away from the secular world in order to protect humanity from the coming destruction of the world. However, in the year 2022, the world has not been destroyed yet, and their master says to the warriors who have mastered the powerful and incomparable martial art but have not been given a chance to show off their deadly skills, "We're dismissed!" Then, the group of warriors who are completely undemanding and have no social common sense start their life in the big city of Tokyo and come to know pure love, friendship, and conflicts.

  46-year-old Hideaki Ito (Shokichi Komachi in the Terraformars live-action film) is cast as the title character, Kappei. Takashi Hirano, who has produced many live-action adaptations of popular Japanese manga, such as Naoshi Komi's Nisekoi and Aka Akasaka's Kaguya-sama: Love Is War, will make his directorial debut on a screenplay by Yuichi Tokunaga (Tonde Saitama). The film is set to be released in Japan on March 18, 2022.

Strongest Warrior's Unrequited Love Story Begins in KAPPEI Live-Action Film Full Trailer

    Toho Movie's official YouTube channel has started streaming a 90-second full trailer for the forthcoming live-action film adaptation of Kiminori Wakasugi's (Detroit Metal City) comedy manga KAPPEI. The film is set to be released in Japan on March 18, 2022.

  In addition to the film's main characters, including 46-year-old Hideaki Ito (Shokichi Komachi in the Terraformars live-action film) as the title character, Kappei, the clip introduces the film's theme song "Tekketsu Gravity" performed by Takanori Nishikawa and Momoiro Clover Z for the first time.

  Nishikawa says, "When I was asked to collaborate on this song, I thought that they were the only ones who could bring out the best of 'KAPPEI' and express the worldview of this song together, so I asked the four members of Momoiro Clover Z to join me. We've worked together many times at events, and we feel like we know each other very well, but this is the first time we've worked together to create a song, so it was very refreshing." And Momoiro Clover Z answers, "We were so happy to receive this offer directly from Nishikawa-san! We've worked together at festivals before, but this is the first time we've worked together in this way, and we're so happy to finally be involved in the same work!"

KAPPEI Live-Action Film Teaser Trailer Introduces Its Main Cast Members

    Toho has released a 30-second teaser trailer for the forthcoming live-action film adaptation of Kiminori Wakasugi's (Detroit Metal City) comedy manga KAPPEI to introduce its main cast members, including 46-year-old Hideaki Ito (Shokichi Komachi in the Terraformars live-action film) as the title character, Kappei.

  Ito says, "To put it bluntly, this is a strange story with strange costumes, strange hairstyles, and strange people, except for the heroine. However, as a person who works in the entertainment industry, I am very grateful and honored to be able to bring a film that the people of Japan, who are forced to live a life of inconvenience in this corona disaster, can get away from reality for a brief moment and laugh from the bottom of their hearts. The director, the staff, and the cast members all worked hard to make this film the best we could, despite the severe restrictions. We hope that you will laugh a lot, cry a little, and also laugh from the bottom of your heart."

  This first clip is narrated by voice actor Kappei Yamaguchi (the male Ranma Saotome in Ranma 1/2, Usopp in One Piece), because he shares the same first name with the protagonist. And the release date for the film in Japan is confirmed to be set for March 18, 2022.
