Tried playing a bit of MGS4 last night because it’s the only numbered entry I’ve yet to beat and. Man.
Honestly? What a pretentious game to put 10 minutes of fun gameplay (diced into 6 equal parts) into an 8 hour long movie.
I remember having some fun my first time playing it when it was new, got to like the 4 hour mark or something? So I plan on just playing through the entirety this time but man. My memories were pretty pleasant, and the game isn’t terrible, but this one really REALLY feels like it lost its way into pretentious movie nonsense compared to the previous.
MGS has always been cinematic, but this one doesn’t let you play the god dang game for more than a minute in between each “Oh look so cool” scene.
Maybe it’s front loaded, I remember it getting a bit more playable at like hour 3 which is why I was so disappointed that I had to give the game up at hour 4 (friend was visiting). But this entire beginning is nonsense. When I CAN play the game I actually enjoy this flavor of MGS, not as much as MGS1 or the sprawling freedom of V (leaving 3 out because 3 is a masterpiece but also I haven’t replayed it in a decade so I’d be nostalgia goggling unlike 1 and 5 which I played recently)- it’s just I don’t get to play it.
Most fun was helping some militia blow up a couple vehicles just because the game let me. I don’t recall doing that my first time playing at all, and in doing so I easily stocked up on some RPGs and a touch more money for future investments.
But the rest is cutscenes. And not even all good ones like I remember- a lot of these are just a bit pretentious and slow and meaningless. A lot of repeated details and unimportant scenes just to show off what the PS3 can do.
Least that one scene where Maryl is like “Nanomachines are cool, Snake, you prematurely washed up old man” and then her squad uses them to clear a room. I remember that being cool- it still is a bit cool.
Also I get to hear Hayter say everything other people say but gruff and with a question mark- I don’t think I’ll ever get tired of that.
