Missing Piece (adristella drabble)
requested by @kanerallels
Adrian didn't see the all appeal surrounding the admiral's daughter— that is, until he met her. Maristella captivated him immediately with her sparkling eyes and quick remarks, and the more he'd gotten to know her that night, the more he realized he'd known her all along, that she filled the space in everything his life had ever been missing.
Even now, as the tides carried him away from Ervina's shore, the smile on his face didn't wash away. Today, all that mattered was the affection he bore for Maristella, and that she seemed to take the same fancy to him.
(a/n and tags under the cut)
a/n: i know you were worried this song wouldn't be right for them, but, personally, can't get over how perfectly this song fits with them. another fine addition to their playlist! also, for those wondering, Ervina is the name of the island where the Arrington family estate is.
taglist: i don't currently have a taglist for admiral's daughter related content. if you'd like to be added to one, let me know!
send me a ship and a song and i’ll write a drabble!

adrian: maristella doesn't use pet names nearly as much as i do.
adrian: which is very funny!
adrian: because sometimes i will crack my knuckles and go "good morning, my sun and moon, my lovliest girl, my baby my sweetheart my darling dearest."
adrian: and she will reply "hello, adrian."
adrian:
adrian: this is not a bad thing. i love her.

Adrian: Now that Casper is away, I'm gonna cut the sleeves off of my jacket.
Maristella: Why???
Adrian: He's, like, 85% of my impulse control.
Maristella: How would he even stop you from doing that???
Adrian: uh....
*three weeks ago*
Adrian: I'M GONNA CUT THE SLEEVES OFF MY JACKET
Casper, not even looking up from his book: No you're not.
Adrian: WHY NOT?
Casper: If you cut the sleeves off your jacket, when Maristella says "I'm cold" and you give her your jacket, she'll still be cold.
Adrian: *begrudgingly puts away his scissors*

enchanted
Whatsoever she thought she'd seen in him, whatever she thought made him different, she saw it all the more now. There was something different in the touch of his hand, in how he said his name, in how his lips gently pressed themselves against her fingers. It wasn't that he was out of place, but it that he was perfectly in place, either. The only way Maristella could bring herself to describe it, especially after the fact, was that he was touched by some kind of destiny, and some part of her was some part of it.

📓 NOTEBOOK: Share 7 lines from a WIP of your choice!
I will direct you to my posts from a wip ask game from a while back!

🧢 CLOTHING: What is your MC currently wearing in the most recent scene of your WIP?
The most recent scene? A pirate outfit!!!
👠 SHOES: What is transportation like in the world of your WIP?
Lots of boats, and I think carriages as well!
🌈 RAINBOW SLOTH: Wild card! Share one thing about your WIP that you have been waiting to be asked about!
Every character's name has a meaning behind it, and I spent a long time selecting them, and sometimes those names' meanings come up later in the book, especially in the names of ships. The Noble Guardian is the name of the ship captained by the Alyward brothers, and it's the meaning of the name Aylward, from which their name is derived. They previously had served on The Lion's Courage which is the meaning of the name Lenna, Admiral Arrington's wife. And, of course, The Star of the Sea, the admiral's flagship that Maristella ends up serving on, is, of course, where the name Maristella finds its meaning. Stars and the sea also show up a lot throughout the book in relation to Maristella, often at key moments when we see into Maristella's thinking and perspective.

🦎 LIZARD: Who is your most untrustworthy OC? Why?
Oh, definitely the Pirate Lord. I feel like it's self explanatory.
📚 BOOKCASE: Share a paragraph from your WIP.
Since I shared more than a paragraph for the share a line ask, let's do a nice size blurb here— perhaps the opening paragraphs of the book?
Even without the footman's introductory proclamation, every eye in the room would doubtless have been on Maristella as she descended the wide staircase. There was no one on Ervina Island who didn't know about the Admiral's daughter— and surely among the foreign guests in attendance, most of whom were men of rank in the navy, she was all the more well known. There wasn't a man in the navy who hadn't considered how the admiral's daughter might sway her father's opinion of you, how if she but spoke a word to the Admiral in your favor, a promotion followed close behind— and surely most of the men in attendance tonight knew that, if a man here were to win her heart, he'd not have want for anything in terms of station and position. But as Maristella walked down the stairs, she scarcely noticed any of them. There was but one soldier whose return to Ervina she'd eagerly anticipated: her father, Admiral Charles Arrington, who'd been at sea for the last six months and finally had returned home. Despite her efforts to remain a picture of propriety, Maristella smiled when she saw her father and mother, waiting for her at the base of the staircase. The Admiral looked just as Maristella had remembered him— a smile tucked away behind his light brown beard, steel blue eyes that always seemed to know all the words you'd never said— though his hair was showing more graying streaks than previously, and his uniform bore a new medal. Mrs. Arrington, standing beside him, wore a teal dress that brought out the accent colors in her husband's uniform, her hair fair and perfectly arranged.

like ships need the sea
His eyes were the eyes of a dreamer, bluer than the sky reflected on the sea, deeper than the sea at peace below the sky— and in this sea, as in all seas, Maristella saw a refuge, a safe place— in the sea in his eyes, she found herself a home.

for this ask game: bed and gemstones
ooohhhhhhh, okay!
🛏️ BED: What do your OCs dream about?
Most of their dreams probably have to do with the water, some in more positive ways, and some in more negative. I also think some of them can't remember their dreams, and some of them relive a lot of trauma in their dreams (especially Verity post book 1.)
💎 GEMSTONES: Share a line in your writing that you really love!
ahhhhh uhhhhhhhhhh just one line? or would y'all object to the entirety of Maristella and Adrian's first waltz?
"Miss Arrington?" He finally spoke up.
 "Yes?"
He held his hand out to her. "May I have this dance?"
"Just this one?" was what she thought, but what she said was, "of course."
She took his hand and rested her other hand on his shoulder as he placed his other hand on her side. It was exactly what she and Casper had just done, but this time it seemed deeper. His hand fit hers perfectly, and warmed as she took it, his touch was softer, but stronger, and she felt something inside, almost like theirs were two souls tied together. It wasn't the first time she'd liked a man so deeply, but never this suddenly.
"It's not a wonder," Maristella thought, looking up into his eyes before he averted his gaze, "that I'm drawn to eyes as blue as the Viorel Sea, arms as strong as the waves that move galleons, and smile as refreshing as the southwestern breeze."
To fall for him would be as easy as falling for the sea, on a day when the winds were fair, and the sun shone on your face, and the waters so deep and clear it was a battle with yourself not to jump headfirst to them. Loving him would be like loving the sea.
And Maristella had always loved the sea.
{more below the cut}
"It seems you're the better dancer of the Alyward brothers," Maristella said.
 "Am I?"
"Well, you've definitely stepped on my toes a lot less." "There's a first time for everything, I suppose," he laughed a little.
"You mean you usually step on people's toes?"
"I mean, yes," he said, "but what I mean to say is it's not common for me to best my brother at anything."
 "I'm sure that's not true."
"He's the better of us. He's a better sailor and swordsman, and certainly a better man in general."
"You sell yourself short," Maristella said, "and you're still a better dancer than most of the men I meet at these kinds of things."
 "Really?"
"I've nothing to gain from lying to you."
The music picked up its pace, and so did they as they followed its flow, caught in its stream.
"Do you ever wonder," Maristella asked, "why women fancy balls more than garden parties or feasts?"
"Not often," Adrian asked, "but I take it you have a theory."
"I've been formulating it a while," Maristella said, "almost longer than I've been attending any of them. Mother would always talk about how splendid each season's balls were, almost preparing me for the day I was old enough to participate. I never saw the appeal, personally, until I started dancing. You can learn a lot about a man by dancing with him."
"Like what?" He spun her out the way a child twirls a delicate rose between her fingertips.
"For starters, the way they carry themselves," Maristella said, as she twirled back to him, "a lot of the stiffs are, well, just that. Stiff, rigid, choppy- there's no heart in their motions; they just do them."
She paused for a moment to note to herself how much Adrian's heart seemed to flow through his motions, especially as he twirled her again, then pulled her back to himself, closer than before.
"Then, there's the flirts," she continued, "the ones who think they own the world. They seem graceful enough, but always with their heads held high," and Maristella's head was not held high. She was looking at the ground, almost ashamed, because these weren't lessons she'd learned in classes, but lessons learned through fire— through having been burned before.
"They don't look at their partner," she shook her head, "they look at everyone else watching them with their partner. She's more of an accessory, a monument- not a person."
She was pleasantly surprised to look up and see Adrian looking at her, almost expectantly, hanging onto her every word— like he truly cared what she had to say.
"What did you gather about my brother?" Adrian asked.
"He stepped on each of my toes, individually, at least twice," Maristella said, "and apologized profusely every time. He's both humble and genuine."
"Is this 'genuineness' a good thing?"
"Is the sun on your face a good thing after a storm at sea?"
He smiled a little at her rhetorical question.
"And in this last moment's waltz," Adrian asked, "what did you happen to gather about me?"
Maristella smiled at his attempt to fish for a compliment.
 "I haven't decided yet."
"Well," he said, "I know what I've learned about you."
"Oh?" Maristella asked, "and what's that?"
"That everything I thought when I first laid eyes on you was right," Adrian smiled, lips parted, and leaned closer to her, with a playful sincerity in his eyes, and continued with a lower voice, "that I'd never behold a more graceful and charming woman, and any man who'd dance with her tonight should count himself among the luckiest on the planet."
"You gathered all that on first glance?" Maristella asked, hoping to feign propriety to hide the true effect his words had on her.
"Most of it," Adrian said, "but all the glances after that have confirmed it- as all the glances henceforth will as well."
She was glad that he twirled her again, because it gave her a chance to hide her face from him, so she wouldn't notice how her cheeks flushed and her breath caught itself in her throat. When she spun back, closer to him, she tried to maintain her formal composure, even as he held her even closer than before.
She would've gone on with him for the rest of the evening, but, as soon as it all began, the song ended, the final notes climbing and chasing each other, until their sudden stop.
"It was an honor to be one of the lucky ones tonight, Miss Arrington," Adrian whispered, giving her hand another kiss.
thanks for the ask!

I would like to know about March 30, The Admiral’s Daughter, and Always Remember, please ma’am!
you got it!
March 30
Basically the gist of this fic, based on a conversation I had with @silver-the-phoenix (a lot of my fics are based on discord conversations wih silver,) is that, even after he's well adjusted to his happy Storybrooke life, Killian still remembers the anniversary of Milah's passing, and when he can't shake the sorrow, he slips away to the Jolly Roger to reflect- and is followed by a somewhat snoopy teenager, who wants to hear a few stories about his paternal grandmother from the pirate who knew her best...
The Admiral's Daughter
aahhhhhh my beloved! this wip is the second original book that I've written at least a full draft of, and I'm so proud of it. The basic gist is our main character, Maristella Arrington, is, well, the admiral's daughter, and she loves being at sea. At a ball her father hosts, she meets a promising naval lieutenant, and they hit it off really well. After hearing about her enthusiasm for exploring the oceans, he suggests she join the navy, and she realizes this is a great idea- not just because the cute guy she just met suggested it, but because it genuinely feels right; it makes sense to her. So, she and her best friend, Verity join the navy together. While at the naval academy, they recieve word that the ship that the lieutenant was serving on was sunk, and that there were no survivors. Of course, Maristella's shaken by this, but she tries to brush it off and focus on her role in the navy.
that is, until she has a run-in with a young pirate captain who seems altogether too familiar...
Always Remember (the burning embers)
the title of this fic may be familiar to some- it's some of the lyrics to The Great War, a Taylor Swift song that I've always felt sums up Killian and Emma in the Dark Ones arc. This fic is a missing moment, in which Killian and Emma have a conversation about some careless words Killian said during that dark time in their story. (i don't wanna share too many details, though. I'll save that for when I post it on Saturday 😉)
thanks for the ask! I loved talking about these!

💔💗💖 for the ask game?
JESSICA!!!! HI 💕💕💕
💔: give a brief character bio of your 3-5 MCs
Maristella: Maristella is the daughter of Admiral Charles Arrington. All her life, she's done her best to be the model daughter, taking care of her sibilings and excelling in her studies and presenting herself as a lady of quality, but she has always felt more at home at sea then on land. When a young lieutenant she meets at one of her father's balls suggests she join the navy, it sounds like a great idea— and the start of the biggest adventure of her life.
Verity: Verity and Maristella have been inseparable friends ever since Admiral Arrington saved her life as a young girl. Verity is fiercely loyal and dedicated to her best friend, so when Maristella joins the navy, Verity elists right alongside her.
Adrian: Adrian Alyward is the younger brother Casper Alyward. They were orphaned at a young age and made a living off of fishing until they joined the navy in hopes of a better lot in life. They lucked out big time when they saved the Admiral's life and were promoted to Lieutenant and Captain, respectively. Lieutenant Adrian Alyward catches the eye of miss Maristella Arrington at her father's ball, and they quickly realize they have a lot more in common than they'd first realized— especially their dedication to help those closest to them, no matter the cost.
💗: what genre is it in?
Uhhhhhh, idk if "piracy" is a genre, but if so, that? Or, like, "period drama but the time period is made up and it's a fictional land and there's magic but it doesn't come up a lot" but again idk if that's a genre either.
💖: are you planning on publishing it? if so, how?
Yes! I'm not entirely sure how, but I've already published a short story with a publishing house and may see if there's any options through them!
thanks for the asks!!!!

🖤: what are your MC names?
I spent a long time choosing meaningful names for the characters in this wip, and even made some lovely aesthetics of main characters' names (full post here!) so here's my three mcs first and last names w/ meanings!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
💔: give a brief character bio of your 3-5 MCs
I answered this one here, so instead I'll tell you about a couple of my other characters!
Admiral Charles Arrington: Arrington joined the navy around the time that his eldest daughter was born, and due to his skill (and possible familial influence,) he rose through the ranks quickly, and was promoted to Admiral only eight years later. During the months in which his route to sail is more rooted in scouting than skirmishes, his daughter accompanies him at sea. She's one of his closest confidants, and understands her longing for the sea more than anyone else in the family does.
Casper: Casper grew up with no father and only a fleeting and hazy memory of his mother, so from a young age he took it upon himself to watch over his younger brother, Adrian. They joined the navy together once they were both old enough, where Casper would later go from Ensign to Captain overnight after saving the admiral's life— and, of course, Adrian was promoted to Lieutenant alongside him.
Conroy: Conroy's father is the Professor of General Studies at the Royal Naval Academy, and inherited much of his father's intellect. His family has always been close with the Arringtons, and he's always been a loyal friend to Maristella, Verity, and anyone else who cares enoigh to get to know him.
Victor: Victor Durand III is the son of Commodore Durand. Victor has held Maristella in silent disdain since the day his father was passed up for a promotion to Admiral in favor of hers. He enjoys nothing so much as to match wits with Maristella and show her up, and once or twice he's succeeded, but the admiral's daughter, always a clever one, has outmatched him more times than he'd care to admit.
❣️: which scene has been hardest to write so far?
My current opening scene was difficult, as they often are. I didn't like the pacing of my original opening, so I had to redo it several times before I hit something I really liked. I'd also say the early middle chapters are the hardest to rewrite, because the book isn't at it's most exciting, for me, there, so I tend to procrastinate.
💕: what has your favorite scene been?
The final scene is one of the ones I replay to myself the most, as well as the climax. However, I'm also quite partial to a scene a couple chapters prior, in which my main character must make a decision to trust someone she despises in order to give herself her best chance to save her closest friend from a horrible fate.
Thanks so much for the ask! 💛🌻
