bernard liking men is genuinely canon, i don’t even know why it’s treated like a debate. he literally says himself that he used to think he was gay, and the only reason he decided he wasn’t is because he didn’t fit the Gay Stereotype (good hygiene and camp dancing). when fran tells him “imagine you have a boyfriend” he literally starts giggling and swooning and gets so caught up in the fantasy that he forgets fran is the one with the boyfriend and not him (“peter wouldn’t do that to me- i mean, you”) but by far the most obvious one is how bernard acts around jason. i’m sorry but there’s no way that could be interpreted as anything other than a crush. and yeah, sure, manny acts like this around jason too, but this is very in character for manny and he does this with a lot of people. he’s a naturally anxious person and a huge people pleaser; he goes out of his way to try and impress loads of characters in the show including his own parents. manny acting like this around jason is no surprise, but for bernard it’s entirely out of character. bernard is rude and grumpy with almost everyone except people he’s shown to have a romantic/sexual interest in. the way he acts with jason is identical to how he is around kate and his “summer girlfriend” - being uncharacteristically friendly, overly polite, and tripping over himself to try and impress them. in my opinion this is kind of furthered by the clip from the outtakes where dylan moran throws himself at jason and says “take me now” (very obviously a joke, but shows that this is the feeling he’s trying to convey with his acting in that particular scene) now you might say that all these things are just jokes and not to be taken seriously because black books is a highly stylised comedy. but, like, that’s not really how sitcoms work. yes, these moments are written to make us as an audience laugh, but in the world the show takes place in these things aren’t done as jokes. these are bernard’s genuine actions and reactions, they just happen to be objectively silly or funny. the way bernard expresses his sexuality and attraction to men is funny, but it’s clearly still very genuine

I will never get over how the Dreamling’s collective Hob took one look at Dream and settled on the nickname “duck”. It is a thing of beauty
