*We did change this so we could have time to talk to and plan these injuries.
The Belle of Belgrave Square - Mimi Matthews, because the romance is perf and there are horses and books and a lovely if dilapidated country estate.
2. Best sequel you’ve read so far this year
The Final Gambit* - Jennifer Lynn Barnes
(*but it’s NOT the final one because there’s a secret 4th book coming out in August and I am so so so excited)
3. New release you haven’t read yet
Falling Out of Time by Margaret Peterson Haddix, although at least it is FINALLY in cataloging at the library so I will have it soon.
4. Most anticipated release for the second half of the year
*as previously mentioned: THE BROTHERS HAWTHORNE
5. Biggest disappointment
Tough call because though I’ve read an unusual number of 2 stars, my expectations for them were all pretty measured. So let’s say The Last Secret You’ll Ever Keep by Laurie Faria Stolz, because I really liked Jane Anonymous but this decision to tell a story w/ an unreliable narrator was annoying as hell.
6. Biggest surprise
The Pink House by Louise Platt Hauck. It is not every day that a random Reddit post sends you down a rabbit hole to read a largely forgotten 90-year-old story of DOMESTIC DELIGHT.
7. Favorite new author (debut or new to you)
Mimi Matthews and/or Louise Platt Hauck, no contest
8. Newest fictional crush/newest favorite character
Top 3 fictional crushes: Tom “not that one, or that one” Hardy from This Bird Has Flown; Jasper Blunt from Belle of Belgrave Square; Ahmad Malik from The Siren of Sussex
Fave character: I’m going to boldly say Sloan Quentin from Losing Gabriel/Somebody’s Baby by Lurlene McDaniel, or perhaps AnnieLee from Run Rose Run, and Julia Wychwood, again from Belle of Belgrave.
9. Book that made you cry
The two that have made me sob the hardest are Stella by McCall Hoyle (not due to dog dying, just an ultra-sad beginning/backstory) and Gizelle’s Bucket List by Lauren Fern Watt (yes due to the dog dying).
10. Book that made you happy
Beloved Monster by Helen Markley Miller (title referring to the sprawling and architecturally ungainly country manor she’s inherited) was pure delight from beginning to end.

28. A Song of Wraiths and Ruin by Roseanne A Brown
★ ★ ★ ★ ★
Let me start off by saying this is another incredibly strong debut. I've read two amazing reviews in one month, there must be something in the water. Brown gives us a fascinating world based on West Africa, with a particularly unique magic system (at least that we've seen in YA Lit), and vastly different but incredible protagonists.
Karina is a plus-sized (reinforced multiple times) bratty princess with a penchant for playing the oud. Malik is a nervous, anxiety-riddled refugee arriving in time for a 50-year-festival. One thing I adore is that nothing about their core personality was forced to change, except how they naturally grew and progressed. By the end of it Karina was still a bratty princess and Malik was still an anxiety-ridden refugee. In fact, both things worked to their benefits.
The story is both a "tournament" archetype via Malik, and royal court intrigue as Karina tries to find out who in the palace could want the queen dead. They two plots manage to both interact with each other as well as hold their own chapters, which was really fun to read, especially when it all came together at the end.
The pacing was wonderful in this story - it was constantly moving forward and told us a lot about the characters and the world they inhabited. By the end of the book, with all its twists and turns, I just wanted to know more. And I'm irritated knowing it's going to be at least a year before I get to see what happens next.
29. We Unleash The Merciless Storm by Tehlor Kay Mejia
★ ★ ★ ☆ ☆
3.5 stars rounded up to a 4! As I reconsidered while writing this review, 3 stars.
In this book we go from Dani's point of view to Carmen's. We learn more about La Voz, Carmen's upbringing. The story and plot itself is good. We see some more of Mateo, look at what's going on each side of the walls. I will say, I'm still not 100% sold on Carmen being the sole POV for this book, which is what dragged it's rating down. I often felt like I wasn't getting the full understanding of everything and that I was removed from the exciting action of the world at large. It felt a little too quiet for the final novel of a duology, except for the final battle. If this were a second novel in a trilogy, I think I would feel differently.
As far as the writing, prose, pacing, and character development, it was solid. It just didn't feel quite as explosive and compelling as the first book.
30. Can’t Even: How Millenials Became the Burnout Generation by Anne Helen Peterson
★ ★ ★ ☆ ☆
I was super excited for this book - as an avid follower of AHP's page "Celebrity Gossip: Academic Style" and a longtime member of the corresponding Facebook group, I got to see the bits and pieces she posted while the "sausage was being made" so to speak.
The book was both what I expected and not what I expected at all, which is exactly what I should have expected in the first place. I will say that I found the stories and interviews compelling enough, I think in the end it was about a very narrow scope of millenial - mainly white, cishet, middle to upperclass millenials. I think many parts of it are universal and applied to myself, but it was definitely a narrower scope.
AHP's writing is clever and interesting for sure, and I finished it relatively quick and was immersed. It was a good book! But I will say it wasn't the greatest, and I think so much more could have been expanded upon.
31. The Silvered Serpents by Roshani Chokshi
★ ★ ★ ★ ★
I am absolutely floored. Thank you NetGalley for this ARC in turn for an honest review!
I finished this book approximately 20 hours ago and I can't stop playing scenes over in my mind. I usually think that second books suffer from either bad pacing or character assassinations. But the Silvered Serpents was just as engrossing as the first book. Chokshi's writing keeps improving with each book she writes. It reads and feels like a breathtaking movie heist, with it's loveable cast of characters.
In ensemble books (like everyone's favorite YA heist ensemble book that shall not be mentioned) sometiems I feel like the characters are only drawn together because of their circumstance, and we don't get to see enough of the dynamics. That is NOT the case in Silvered Serpents, where every single character has a meaningful interaction with every other one. I truly believe in this found family, and that they platonically love each other, and would die for each other.
Platonic love isn't written enough, especially in YA Lit. I will add - the YA label for this one is holding on by a tenuous thread. But we get to see how their relationships with each other affect the decisions that they make and who they are as a person. There will be a little suspension of belief needed for the way they arrive at conclusions but honestly, it all was written so well otherwise I didn't care.
The setting is like a fairy tale - our ensemble is whisked away to wintry Siberia, to the Sleeping Palace. Chokshi's descriptions are incredible. It feels like a dream the way she writes, vivid and chilly and enticing. I am obsessed with this book. It is much darker and the stakes are higher. I cannot wait to reread the edited version coming out later this year.

Question 2(part 1): In this era of 'fake news' and 'do your own research', why do people NOT trust traditional media?
Traditional media has faced a decline in public trust for several reasons. As news consumption has risen, trust in the media has declined, as indicated by recent surveys. According to Malik and Peterson (2021), in 2020, a record high of nine percent of people expressed "a great deal" of trust in the mass media, while 60 percent indicated little to no trust (para. 2). A recent survey conducted in the United States indicated that people believe that the “American media landscape has become increasingly polarised over the last few decades. Networks like MSNBC and Fox News cater to specific political ideologies, with 95% of MSNBC’s audience being Democrats and 93% of Fox News’ audience being Republicans” ( Malik and Peterson, 2021, para. 3).
"Large numbers of people see the media as subject to undue political influence, and only a small minority believe most news organisations put what's best for society ahead of their own commercial interest," wrote Reuters Institute Director Rasmus Kleis Nielsen in the report, which is based on an online survey of 93,432 people, conducted in 46 markets” (Coster, 2022, para. 4).
According to Wilson et al., (2020), in recent times, many people have lost trust in mainstream news sources. This lack of trust is especially noticeable during crises when reliable information is crucial. Fake news worsens this problem by making people doubt the credibility of mainstream media. This not only leads to misinformation but also leaves people more vulnerable during disasters. False news stories can impact our trust in the media. When news coverage is cynical or focuses on scandals in a tabloid-like manner, it can make citizens trust news organizations less. This type of coverage is common in fake news stories because their creators want to attract more viewers by using sensational and divisive content. Fake news can directly attack the press by accusing them of being biased, involved in wrongdoing, or incompetent. It can also indirectly undermine the press by contradicting what mainstream media reports. Additionally, when online misinformation looks similar to real journalism, it can make people doubt the credibility of genuine news sources. Research shows that exposure to fake news leads to less trust in the media (para. 14-16).

1: 6 of the songs you listen to most?
oh man, my taste in music is so tied to whatever I’m obsessed with at the moment, it’s embarrassing. lately I’ve also just been putting on different playlists when I just want some bg noise or something. anyways, rn I think it’s toss a coin to your witcher (A BOP, ok?) and her sweet kiss from the witcher, arcade by duncan laurence (last year’s dutch & bi eurovision sc winner) (I have an EXCELLENT dutch playlist, if I do say so myself (with this and one other as the exception bc it’s in english)), honky cat/rocketman/tiny dancer/take me to the pilot from the rocketman soundtrack, ummm mystery of love and futile devices by sufjan stevens, aaand this is more than 6 or less depending on if we count each artist as one jhfgjh but I’ll stop here
2: If you could meet anyone on this earth, who would it be?
ooof, that’s hard. not a clue tbh??? oh actually mnfmgn this stems from a discussion my uni friends and I had, but I’ll say I’d meet mr david j. peterson, bc this guy worked on/helped develop a crazy amount of fantasy languages, for game of thrones, penny dreadful, thor: the dark world, the witcher (the tv series), and loads more and I think that’s SO cool. yes this is also a copout but hey
21: Who is your celebrity crush?
