Oh, it was exactly the same for me! It's a long story but at first I really wasn't interested in the show at all, but my family would put it on during every meal so I'd catch a few episodes here and there, I even missed the bella ciao scene at first. But during s2 when tokyo confronts Sergio about Andrés knowing his name, and we get like a 10 sec flash to the bella ciao scene, that was my first time I went "what's going on here" and the seed for my hermanos obsession was planted XD If you'd said to me back in 2019 that 5 years later these 2 would be my favourites and I'd still be loving and missing them, I'd never have believed it lol. I rewatched some scenes I'd missed, by the s2 finale I was invested and the hermanito reveal made me cry 😭💔

You're not alone, I will never recover from that either. In fact, allow me to make the scene worse for you - there's one thing I noticed when rewatching the show. When Tokyo dies/Raquel 'fake' dies, both times Sergio is pleading with them too to get away or give him up. But you'll notice in both cases he's adamantly giving "orders" in a sense, he doesn't use the words "por favor". There's only one scene where he switches from orders to child-like pleading, and that's the hangar scene. He's pleading, begging Andrés to leave and he screams 'Andrés por favor' desperately.

(pt 2) Sergio really is so comfortable with affection from Andrés, love the way you put it! And hahaha Andrés is the most Unhinged Bastard Man but that flies out the window with hermanito, he's always so fond of him. One of my favourite things about their relationship is how they are both such cold/reserved people otherwise but around each other they can show their genuine emotions, it's beautiful. The guantanamera scene is like a perfect time capsule of their bond, the mingled grief and love, the joy and the sorrow, the smiles and tears. And how despite Andrés is the one with a death sentence looming over him, it's him trying to cheer up Sergio, just like in the Bella Ciao scene it's him singing "che mi sento di morir" and continuing on till Sergio smiles. Anyway it's truly such a precious scene and I love how it ends with their silly little dance moves, gives me so much serotonin :') Please don't apologise about replying late, I loved reading your thoughts too! Oh, that's cool! I remember that scene in season 2, and I love the shot we get of the hug there, like you can really see how protective it is, the way Andrés crandles Sergio's head and back... so yeah, I can totally see how that moment planted the first seed for your hermanos obsession! The hermanito reveal was such a gut punch, there is little to do...

And wow, thank you, this did indeed make that scene even worse for me, I didn't think it was possible! You're so right, oh no... really, the way Sergio sobs "Andrés, por favor!" is so child-like and heart-wrenching... literally a little brother begging his big brother not to leave him, and knowing on some level that he'll never be able to make him change his mind... I need to curl up into a ball for a while ahhh

That's definitely one of my favourite things too, they're so calculating but around each other they feel safe and comfortable enough to let their guard down... brothers!! Yesss, that's such a big brother moment for Andrés! Like he can be pretty self-centered but there he clearly puts Sergio's needs above his and I melt! Side note about the bella ciao scene, I wonder if Andrés singing "e se io muoio da partigiano tu mi devi seppellir" on his own was supposed to be some sort of foreshadowing of the fact he'll die and Sergio'll survive... I mean, "and if I die as a partisan you must bury me" is basically what happened, isn't it? Except that now I'm struck by the thought that probably Sergio couldn't bury Andrés, coudn't take care of his brother's body... OH NO. On a happier note, I love the way Sergio asks Andrés, "we're the resistance, aren't we?" in the bella ciao scene, it almost sounds like it used to be an inside joke, maybe something they told each other when they were younger, captivated by their grandfather's stories... And yes, Sergio "I don't dance" Marquina WILL dance if his big brother so requires :D

I'm as excited as y'all are about season 4 and I want to make gifsets but there are no new memes to do it, no specific challenges for it, and a dear friend of mine brought it up recently as well, so here we are. I have too many more of these planned for the future, so... to the first of many.

Thanks for the ask!  And sorry it took me so long to get to it.

A - Ships that you currently like a lot. (They don’t have to be OTPs because not everyone has OTPs.) Friendships, pairings, threesomes, etc. are allowed.

Gobblepot is my OTP.  I also have a lot of fondness for Clex and Kylux. 

 I enjoy Wayleska - maybe more in fanworks.  I think Jeremiah in show is amazing and heart-breaking (watching gifsets of some scene is properly gut-wrenching) - but Bruce in show is a bit too young to effectively process and parry the sheer intensity of him (also the writing is a little shaky at points there).  Fanworks can examine that in more detail, age characters up a little, etc.

I like/d Nygmakins.  I think they actually spent some time connecting those characters early on - and I found their attraction believable.

I’m usually very not fond of fics with children, but I read two excellent ones recently with Clark and Lex’s clone son.  I think it worked because A - they were exceptionally well-written, B - he was older, so didn’t fall into the trap of lisping Victorian saccharine child, and C - we know Lex longed for a loving family.  It makes sense that he’d want to forge a genuine relationship with his son - so the fics with these three characters are well-rooted in what we know about them.

C - A ship you have never liked and probably never will.

I never liked Bashir and Ezri in DS9.  It felt too much like he was just carrying his Jadzia obsession on.  

Bashir’s story in that respect was interesting.  He’s supposed to have moved past it to genuinely valuing their friendship - but then in later seasons, it’s implied that he continued to hold a torch, and that it’s had a really detrimental effect on him building meaningful romantic relationships.  So to have him end up with Ezri?  Urgh.  It just seemed so unhealthy.

Oswald and Ed leaves me queasy.  There’s so much manipulation and gaslighting and coercion.  The power dynamic is very one-sided.  It was terribly written, too.  No organic build-up, just great indigestible lumps of it served up.

J - Name a fandom you didn’t think about until you saw it all over Tumblr. (You don’t have to care about it or follow it; it just has to be something that Tumblr made you aware of.)

Gotham!  I liked Batman - but it was seeing gifsets of Jim and Oswald on the pier that made me tune in.

T - Do you have any hard and fast headcanons that you will die defending?

Oswald read a lot as a child.  He probably didn’t go out to play much, given that he seems to have been badly bullied.  He’s quick with quotations, and his vocabulary is expansive.  We see, as an adult, that he gathers and adopts what he finds valuable about people: he borrows ideas, styles, mannerisms from Fish, Falcone and Maroni.  I’d guess that back when he was a child, when his social circle was more limited, he’d take that from books instead.

Although later seasons of Gotham make Jim a bit of an all-action hero, the tough guy all the women want - and Ed definitely sees him a bit as the ‘captain of the football team type’ - effortlessly popular and successful - Jim is actually quiet and quite introverted by nature.  Barbara complains in season one that they don’t go out.  Lee has to pressure him into dinner with friends.  

In fact, that’s a trend with Jim in relationships, I think.  Other people tend to do the chasing, whether it’s for romance or friendship.  He’s quite passive, I think.  He also tends to retreat into himself.

Z - Just ramble about something fan-related, go go go! (Prompts optional but encouraged.)

I miss the kind of fandom Livejournal’s structure offered.  You could have way more in-depth discussion and meta in communities.  A lot of Tumblr is just random likes and no discussion - stuff just flies past on your dashboard.  

I suspect the community structure also prevented a lot of squabbling, since you didn’t have to see stuff you didn’t like (which is not to say spectacular wank didn’t happen.  That’s much harder to avoid on Tumblr.

I also miss essays.  A lot of old fandom was really essays on themes, characters, etc.  That’s rare, now.

August 19th is my birthday and I have reached the point in my life where birthdays are rarely celebrated and gifts are few and generally crappy. It falls on a teacher workday 9 times out of 10 so I’m stuck in boring meetings, and it’s generally just not a happy day for me.

Well screw that.

My name is Angel (for real, not because of the show or anything), I’m a teacher, and I am a huge fangirl--but of the show. My bestie @waywardjoy likes to call me the Queen of Canon because I go out of my way to line up my fics with the canon-verse of SPN. Anything you give me that is canon will be ultra appreciated, but I’m good with AU as well--I’m just not a big fan of RPF. I love the actors and the convention videos, but I feel weird about putting them into fiction (personal preference) so please don’t do that for my birthday gift. 

I believe quality creative pieces bring out emotions in the audience. That’s how I identify whether or not something is good. With that in mind, fluffy stuff, sexy smutty stuff, and even heart-wrenching angst are all completely fair game. I just appreciate the good stuff. :) *No non-con or abuse please!* I’m not much of a shipper, but I’ll read it if you write it for me. :)

I highly recommend any fic gifts that include a reader use Y/N instead of “Angel” even though that is my name--I read so much fic that it’s no trouble for me to substitute my name, and I love sharing, so I want lots of people to love your fic, not just the ones who share my first name. :) On that same note, your gift doesn’t have to be birthday themed, I’m sure we’ll all enjoy your creation on days that don’t celebrate our birthdays.
