So much of Taki and Klaus' interactions pre-japan are soooo tender and sweet and domestic. It's all 'Klaus cooking taki's favorite foods' 'Klaus and Taki washing up together' 'Klaus defending Taki from people who want to take advantage of his naivete/cultural ignorance' 'Klaus telling Taki cute stories from his childhood' 'Sex that focuses on Taki's pleasure.'
But once they get to Japan all of that disappears, and the only way he has left to show his love is Violence. Hurting others or hurting Taki, is that 'Love'? Of course not, he knows that, but it's all he has left. Because of war but also because they're no longer equals in Japan. Taki is nobility but more than that he's practically a living saint. And Klaus is just a badly trained foreign dog. So he can kill Enemies (good violence (tm)) or he can attack Taki (bad violence (tm)) but he can never approach Taki as an equal, as a mutual lover. Every touch is violence because it comes from an inferior.
'Being your sword is the only thing I have to be proud of.'

Scattered Maiden Rose Thoughts
*totally understand if this is not your kind of manga for very obvious reasons. This includes spoilers
New Impressions since reading years ago
I have not read this since I was a young teen! I had no idea there were new chapters or redraws (s/o to the saezuru discord- maiden rose channel or else I would have never found out)
I still have a decent of the "new" parts to read.
First of all when I read it as a teen I has no idea it was not a chronological story with regards to the train scene LOL .
I still get confused with the timeline like of the doujinshi/ one shots.
Like when Klaus is healing and all bloody with Taki with him is that like right after he was interrogated? Or when Klaus gets mad at Suguri for leaving Taki with him. Idk maybe if I read the new redraws and chapters it will make more sense.
Is it supposed to be a mystery whether or not Klaus is a Eurote spy? Or the thing that people assume instead of knowing real relationship between Taki and Klaus? Also I think other people besides Surgui know... like idk the older frowning man guarding Taki's door. Or the military people who were suspicious of why they were in each others' room...
_
Speed of relationship
Also its wild how much Taki's deportation/ the escalation of war speeds up their romantic and sexual relationship. It is the catalyst that forces Klaus to assert his romantic love for Taki, for him to get physically intimate with him. Truly now or never in the context of war.
But seriously its wild how fast things escalate. Like within days. Including a lot of "firsts" for Taki that he was forbidden to experience at all.
---
How each character fell in love with the other
Taki:
With Taki I think it is more clear to me why he fell in love with Klaus. No one fully saw Taki for who he was outside of his very high social standing that inherently puts him on a pedestal. He had a lot of first/ beautiful experiences at Luckenwalde. He shared those things with Klaus. Klaus actually genuinely enjoyed being with Taki as he was. I mean Taki is great but he is also uptight, naive, and sexually/romantically inexperienced. But idk I think its unique that it does not bother Klaus. Also because of Klaus openly being the first one to say his feelings/desires- Taki can even acknowledge these parts of himself at all.
However, in the beginning Taki could not consciously realize his feelings about Klaus. How could he? He faces: cultural ideas of purity linked to his family/social standing/ political role. War, taboo, and obligation. There are so many things at only Luckenwalde they will get to experience. There are so many kind soft parts of their relationship that can never be accessed again.
Klaus:
With Klaus it is more obvious to me how he shows his care for Taki and less of the why. I wish I understood better though!
He shows this in a myriad ways. Klaus is saved by the book he puts in his jacket because Taki wrote in it in Luckenwalde. He earnestly tells Taki how much he wants (maybe more in fantasy than in possible reality) a simple life with him. He shows how much he wants Taki including toxic ways. Sometimes he wants him softly and other times violently and ravenously.
It is shown in Luckenwalde that Klaus at first admired Taki's strength. But it becomes more and more things. Even if he only initially works on getting closer to Taki as an order.
I think it is really meaningful to Klaus that they met years before reuniting in Luckenwalde. Klaus infers that it shows that Taki wants him even if cannot verbalize it. Klaus' experience of the romance illustrates the more metaphysical aspect of love. For him, it does not matter why you fall in love with someone, even if none of their characteristics make sense on paper, it is that you must go toward it regardless of sacrifices.
I think this part of the story alludes that Taki's metaphysical social role isn't just "superstition" but is possibly the very thing that brings him and Klaus together.
Even given how things played out- I don't think Klaus regrets leaving his home, rights or citizenship for Taki. He definitely is furious that despite these things- Taki does not show physical or emotional intimacy toward him. He does not understand the rejection. And even the "why" Taki is acting this way is only explained by Surgui.
--
Emotions through art choices
How the author shows subtle facial expressions and touch between characters is really impressive. Especially since a large part of the story is the lack of fully honest, vulnerable, or direct verbal communication- the way the characters' facial expressions are both guarded and show emotion is a big part of the storytelling.
---
To be honest idk if this series will ever be finished 😭

Maiden Rose & Berserk - The Authors who just Couldn't Do It
I've been complaining ever since Inariya Fusanosuke went out of hiatus a couple years ago that her story is stagnating too much.
Before her hiatus the story was progressing at its own back and forth, "toying with it" pace. The whole point of the story was to get Taki to a place where he could move past his learned social inhibitions and enjoy his sex life and relationship with Klaus, someone who gives exactly 0 shit about the superbly and uselessly complex social expectations of Japan Taki's homeland.
So there's a lot of back and forth, we see first how Taki and Klaus even become entangled in the first place, we see them explore, we see Taki getting vaguely tempted and just indulging and discovering, then it's return to the homeland "back to being inhibited" mode, and we see Taki hiding big time and Klaus banging at the door trying to get him out.
This part of the story is pretty much the author's consciousness going around and toying with the idea of coming out, getting close to the idea, refusing (and thus being repelled away), and then getting back to the idea anyway. That's why she has Klaus always come back to Taki anyway.
But then, that's not the only story with the same back and forth "I just can't fucking commit" kind of dynamic. Berserk had the exact same problem, and that problem was so damn bad, the entire story got completely discontinued, until finally the author simply died.
In my opinion, Berserk was about a pretty similar process as in Maiden Rose: opening up, and transcending something that's holding you down. For Taki/the author, that's social sexual inhibitions. For Guts/Kentaro Miura, that was also his own sex issues and being able to open up and connect to someone from that level.
Berserk goes just a little farther than Maiden Rose, in that Kentaro Miura went and stared down what he was supposed to do right in the face.
In chapter 46 to 47, we have Guts enjoying a nice little flashback and nervous breakdown of his own traumas.
But I couldn't help but sense that there was a pulling away on his end when he did, specifically exactly at the moment Guts moved away from Casca after he ended up strangling her.
Guts had that one job of connecting to his chosen love interest, the female character created almost literally for that purpose, but when the time came for it, I feel like he just, backed away. Like he was just repelled away from the issue and he just ultimately couldn't do it.
Straight after that the entire story basically goes to shit and Casca is sidelined in the most disgusting, and my god unrealistic way possible, and she remains sidelined up until this day. With the author being dead, it's unlikely anything else will come out of it.
At the end of the day, these are and were two authors trying to approach seriously crippling and traumatic stuff. I'd be willing to bet the author of Maiden Rose went through some form of sexual trauma, and I'm fairly almost 100% sure Kentaro Miura also went through something even more straightforward. It doesn't surprise me that the author with the heaviest load died with the story unfinished, and that he couldn't approach the subject anymore after attempting it the first time.
That being said, it's seriously fucking frustrating from a story-telling and narrative point of view. Watching Casca getting grossly sidelined and treated the way she was all of the sake of not approaching the topic again I felt was disgusting. And waiting around while Inariya Fusanosuke keeps using violence to draw out her own desires is making me want to ask "well, I get it, but when will you be getting to it, then? When will you finally get to the point?"
Although, regarding Maiden Rose, with the latest chapter's showdown between Klaus and Suguri where Suguri asks Klaus to take Taki away if he ever was to lose himself in all of the politicking, I'm having hope for the story to finally be going somewhere—it seems even the author can sniff herself making a bad decision she doesn't want make, and already promising herself to take her self-insert away if it'd ever get to that.
While I completely get their inability to approach the very subject they created their story for: healing, I just also seriously wish they'd come to terms with what they need to face, and would finally put the matter to rest once and for all.

Meme: Top 10 AO3 works vs Personal Top 10
Rules: List your "top 10" (or up to 10 if you haven't written that many) fics ranked by kudos on AO3. Are you surprised by what's most popular to your readers? Then, under a cut, provide your ranking of your personal top 10 fics (with explanations if you want!), and then tag a few fellow writers!
@thisbluespirit tagged me a wee while ago but I was travelling and now I'm not. :-)
These are all The Sentinel except for the last which is Maiden Rose
Reverently and Discreetly
A Modern Kind of Guy
Bearing the Mark
The Children of Cascade
Restraint
Hell of a Town
Right Memory
Family Business
A Thin Strand of Winter
Fall Fly Laugh
The main thing I notice about the above is that they are almost all longfic, (or what counts for it in my world of Brevity is Good) and a good number of them are all notably tropey in a recognisable fan favourite way. (Restraint is short but is also light bondage porn, say no more!) I think of these, Family Business and A Thin Strand of Winter are among my personal favourites, although I'm definitely proud of the worldbuilding I did for my Children of Cascade stories.
A more personal top ten would go as follows, in no particular order:
Family Business and A Thin Strand of Winter as noted above
That Bloody Callan (Callan in case the title doesn't give it away, and a gen ficlet)
How Strange the Change (Maiden Rose. Oh look it's a ghost story and a death story!)
Walking the Maze (TS, brief Alex/Jim/Blair, what can I say? but also plot)
The Grand Tableau (TS, a misery-wallow non-con/dub-con death-fic extravaganza, so totally on brand. I'm actually quite proud of this because I wrote it to work out my feelings about my mother's Alzheimer decline and death but I think I balanced out the personal and actually making Jim and Blair themselves pretty well)
New Age Woo (TS, complete fluff and just fun. Plus it wrote itself)
Kings or Knaves (TS. And speaking of writing itself, 40k words of blackmail and angst and burglary in Regency England.)
Nobody Knows Me At Home Any More (The Professionals, actual plotting, and a story that ties in one theme that's also important in Family Business, namely the relationship between adult children and their parents, nothing personally of interest here, please move along, thanks so much.)
Her Flowers to Love (Sapphire and Steel, but not about them at all. My Eleanor back-story fic)
The main thing I notice here is that there's more short form fic, and more, well, death. I have my quirks, yes?
No pressure at all, but I tag @sullendragon, @dont-rain-on-my-barricade, and @afrogeekgoddess

losing my mind thinking about the parallels between taki being stripped of his humanity through having to bear the weight of being the flower of the house of reizen and klaus being stripped of his humanity via taking on the duty and the honour of being taki's knight/sword, and how young and tragically naive they were in entrusting the bond of master/knight with the safekeeping of their love, even if they thought they knew all the risks, how ironic is it that these roles that require upholding a by all means unattainable idea of purity and virtue and selfless duty would be the very thing that'd taint the tenderness and the sweetness between them and turn it into something violent, because virtue without the often antithetical intricacies of humanity is an impossibility at best and bitter suffering and death at worst, god can somebody just hold my hand cos i-
