so like yeah, the fucking msuhroom dead ass grows into the muscles and i believe the nerves, presumably interrupting the bugs native nervous system, and either tapping into and overriding it, or perhaps replacing it entirely.
and i've said it before somewhere, idk on this blog or not.
but there are only a handful of ways for leif to exist:

-leif and the cordyceps just, merged together during their decades long nap. the leif of the past may have died, but perhaps a transformed version of him lives on.
-my favorite, leif is alive.
leif is still alive but he can't speak or move or act as the cordyceps has interrupted those connections. depending on how u wanna spin it, he could be watching an imposter pretend to be him. or he could only vaguely be aware of whats happening outside his body, trapped in his own brain with phantom sensations as the only clue as to what is happening outside.
you could spin it as the cordycecps eventually learns to hear or communicate with leif. a fun and interesting way for the cordyceps to forge its own identity. or further combine and mix itself with leif.
but i really like the horror aspect, of a creature possessing your body, not maliciously, but desperately, to survive. laden with the guilt of having killed its host in mind in order to live. a benevolent parasite that imitates you not to hide amongst prey, but a tragic attempt to recreate what it took from the world.
and the cruelest part of the tragedy, is that the host is still there.
How do you feel in this situation? Where your body has been stolen, but you can feel the theif's overwhelming guilt. Do you build resentment, over the opportunities that sit just outside your reach? Pity? For an alien creature desperately trying and failing to emulate you, when it could never succeed. Frustration? Watching it fail where you excelled? Envious of of the relationships it builds after destroying yours? Do you rejoice when it fails?
Do you want to live vicariously through it, grabbing what little sensation you can, letting it use the body you no longer can?
Or do you want it to die, even though it spells your own end? Destroy your body, if you can't have it, why let someone else? Do you deserve the right to take the life of another, if that life was stolen from you?
