I've been thinking about the Metatron's motivations.
At first, I thought he was using Aziraphale in a simple internal power struggle ploy. He can't be in charge because he's just a spokesman and since he knows Micheal has no intention to share authority with anyone else, he needs a puppet if he wants to run the show. Aziraphale, who is naive and, let's admit it, easily coaxed, makes a perfect candidate. He isn't a very elevated angel, so he assumes he'll be easy to handle - and quite as easy to dismiss if he refuses to play along as intended. And recruiting him has the added bonus of getting rid of a torn in heaven's side by breaking up Aziraphale and Crowley, who are blamed for thwarting Armageddon 1.0. After that 25-lazarii miracle they inadvertently produced together, it's easy to see how the Metatron would be very keen to prevent them from standing in the way of Armageddon 2.0.
Then, I thought about it some more. I thought about some of the dark, ominous looks he's cast from the corner of his eyes, the color-coding of his clothes and the way he oh so easily swayed Aziraphale. Heavens is a lot of things in the show, but it's never flattering and persuasive. Not like that. Flattery and bribery are Hell's tools, and so is playing on people's insecurities and setting them up against one another.
And then I thought, what if the Metatron isn't the Metatron? What if Satan took personal interest in the launching of Armageddon 2.0 and impersonated the Metatron?
God couldn't care less, that's a given, but Satan? He was obviously VERY pissed off and personally involved at the end of S01. It's a bit foolish to think that because Adam thwarted him on Earth he's out of the picture permanently. Or that he won't be trying to extract his revenge on those who thwarted him- it's apparently his whole thing.
And then, we come back to Aziraphale - and, more to the point, Crowley. Who is Aziraphale? A mid-level angel - a nobody who means well and can be easily swayed with the right arguments. But Crowley? From Satan's point of view, Crowley is NOT a nobody. If we read the clues correctly, Crowley was NEVER a nobody, in fact. He was a pretty high-ranking angel before the Fall, possibly even an archangel. More to the point, Satan thinks Crowley is his top agent. He's the demon who instigated the original sin, invented the Spanish Inquisition and started WW2. The demonic genius behind the M25.
The demon who was SUPPOSED to deliver the antichrist on Earth.
Crowley did not just turn traitor on Hell, but on SATAN personally.
So it would make sense for Satan to take a personal interest in return.
Everything that follows just makes so much sense if Satan is impersonating the Metatron. He wants the launching of Armageddon 2.0 AND revenge on Crowley. So he arranges to use Aziraphale to do both. He takes him away from Crowley - and makes Aziraphale break his heart in the process.
I've seen people go about the coffee scene, arguing the coffee was spiked. I think that if any 'miracle' was performed at that fateful moment, it was to push Nina and Maggie to have that conversation with Crowley. So that Crowley would finally open himself up and confess to Aziraphale - only to be rejected in the most heartbreaking way possible by Aziraphale, who's been dazzled by the idea of running Heavens along with his best friend as angels.
I've also seen people comment on how manipulative and cunning the Metatron was to 'orchestrate' the break up - and he was, no doubt about it. But how would the Metatron, as an angel, know how insulting and impossible a proposition that would be for Crowley? He'd have to be a fucking mastermind on top of being a master manipulator - two things he certainly didn't seem to be in s01. No, I'm sorry, but an angel would just assume a demon would WANT to come back into the fold. Only a demon would know better. And only a demon would go about breaking them up so cunningly.
And here's the good bit: the Metatron only turns up AFTER the Hell delegation has gone to report Beelzebub's treason to their master. Not before or during, but AFTER.
And what is one of the first thing he does when he walks into the bookshop? He asks Crowley if he recognizes him, of course. He doesn't ask because Crowley used to be a high-ranking angel - he asks because Crowley is a demon, and if he can fool Crowley, then he can fool anyone, can he?
And that leads us to the elevator scene. Notice how fast Metatron pushes the 'Heavens' button as soon as Aziraphale sets foot in? Notice the calculative looks he gives him from the corner of his eyes? They make perfect sense if Aziraphale just fell into a particularly devious and intricate trap - setting himself up as both an hostage and a tool for Satan to further extract revenge on Crowley and start Armageddon 2.0.
Oh, while ALSO providing Satan with his 'ride' to infiltrate Heavens, of course. Demons can't use the elevator without an escort, remember?
It all makes so much damned sense - and it scares the shit out of me for s03.

RUST ANON I READ BOTH OF THEM AND THEY WERE BOTH AMAZING 😭😭😭 PLS I BEG FOR MLRE CRUMBS OR ANYRHING RUST RELAted oR WRITTEN BY YIU
You know it’s funny because Chevy has me daydreaming about them at the grocery store so that will have to be written, I really need them to argue about fresh vs canned fruit and Rust to teach Sugar how to make sweet tea :(
I have some incomplete stuff that I started and thought 1. Lazy writing warm up that does nothing (Maggie going to Doumain’s) 2. this would never fucking happen (circa early 2012) and 3. This is entirely too horny to put in a chapter with already exceedingly long smut (post stabbing recovery) lmao so here they are
Tumblr media
Sugar lost a coin flip and is on her knees under the bar for the afternoon. Rust does the bookkeeping for the next inventory order and Bob drinks himself face down onto the bar, the lucky bastard.
“Don’t forget to clear the lines,” Rust reminds her, too cheerfully, and disappears into the back room before she can tell him to go fuck himself. Sugar keeps scrubbing the fridge out, not stopping when she hears the front door open. Doumain’s can run on the honor system so she doesn’t get up to see which regular straggled in for their post-fishing refreshments.
“Excuse me? I’m looking for Rustin Cohle.”
“I don’t know anyone by that name, ma’am,” Sugar responds, voice echoing in the cool cavity she has her damn head stuck in until she can get the back corner clean.
“Oh,” she sounds disappointed, rather than irritated, which piques Sugar’s interest but not enough to look up. This woman, whoever she is, sounds polished and put together and Sugar doesn’t know why she’s in a place like this. “Well, if you see him—” Sugar stops herself from snapping at her— “will you let him know Margaret Sawy— Hart, Maggie Hart wants to talk to him?”
The bar rattles when Sugar bangs the back of her head hard enough to wake Bob. She’s holding the back of her head when she stands, meeting eyes so, so blue and wide in concern.
“Who’s the bird?” Bob asks, voice rough with sleep.
“Are you—?” Maggie asks as the same time.
Sugar can’t register either question and calls out, “Rust!”
Maggie quirks a brow that makes Sugar feel reprimanded enough to mouth a quick sorry, before patting Bob’s shoulder and tilting her head to the back room for him to follow her.
“I ain’t clearing those lines, you lost fair and—” Rust falls silent mid-step, halting in the doorway that was Sugar’s escape.
“Rust,” Maggie greets softly, “It’s good to see you.”
“Bullshit,” he replies, flat without any true menace. Sugar wants to be anywhere but here.
“I talked to Marty,” Maggie starts.
“I hear you talked to the cops, too,” Rust says, heavy with accusation, but he steps forward enough that Sugar can dart out.
“Yes, them, too,” she says. Sugar can feel Maggie looking at her when she pulls on Bob’s elbow. “How are you?”
“What’d Marty tell you?”
“Who is she?” Bob asks in the backroom, just out of sight.
“Maggie,” Sugar whispers back and his brows jump.
“He wanted to know what the police asked me about. He said he was helping you with something. That’s it. How long have you been back?”
“Hear you got a big house,” Rust says, choosing again not to answer her question, voice only slightly less hostile. “Marty says the girls are doing fine. That’s good.”
“Rust,” she says, the edge of pleading make Sugar and Bob exchange a look, “Just tell me it’s something that’s not gonna get him hurt.”
“Well, I can’t tell you that. It never sat right with me, and it doesn’t now, you asking me to lie to you about him. Now, get out of here. You’re classing the place up.” A stool scrapes the ground and the door opens and closes again but Sugar and Bob don’t move until Rust says, volume conversational, “Come on out.”
“You know how to hold a grudge, brother,” Bob comments first as he retakes his seat and Rust only grunts, watching the white SUV pull away before he grabs a bottle of whiskey and three glasses.
“I think I’m concussed,” Sugar mutters, rubbing the back of her head.
The lock jingles and Sugar looks up but doesn’t move from where she’s curled up. Rust swings his keys into his palm with a low whistle.
“What are you doing?” he asks, stopping mid step when he sees her on the couch.
“Reading.”
“That’s not what I mean,” Rust says with a shake of his head, walks over without taking off his boots to hook a finger into her necklace. When he pulls slightly Sugar sits up straighter. “Get down.”
The embarrassment is a show, unfolding her legs slowly and not looking away from him to not miss any further instruction. Sugar sits on her heels, chasten on her knees and at this level she notices for the first time her bed is a few inches shorter than his. She’s about to snip about how he should just crate her when he goes to work if he doesn’t want her on the furniture, but his hand curls around her necklace before she can open her mouth. The chain and clasp are sturdy, on purpose likely, with how easy it is for him to hold her down by it. His curled knuckles press down on the back of her neck until her cheek is on the floor and holds her there until the lesson takes root.
“Daax,” he says, not stern but firm enough for her to not move. Heat flushes her cheeks even as she relaxes further onto her forearms and she stays, just like he said. Sugar might find this degrading if it weren’t for the absence of tension as her entire self decompresses.
Rust moves some things around in the kitchen cupboards, ice hits glass, a liquid splashes. He returns without saying a word and Sugar can hear him take a drink after he sits down, his leg bends over her lowered shoulders, boot near her flat hand.
“Ts’uus.”
Sugar carefully sits back on her heels as he told her to do.
“‘Aani.”
Her first instinct is to stand but she swallows, putting her palm on the floor, one and then the other to crawl between his spread knees. She sits with her hands in her lap, poised to break at the first askance of compliance. Rust touches under her chin with a slight smile, “Gheli.”
Sugar can’t help it, she really can’t, when her hips cant forward— good.
Rust is awake and smoking already when she rolls over, her back to the room, sheets tight over the curve of her hip.
“Sugar.”
Her answer is a questioning hum.
“Can you do something for me?”
“What’s that?” she asks sleepily, rubbing her eye and twisting to look at him.
“Get on your hands and knees.”
He exhales, billowing and cloud-like, as she rises slowly, positioning herself as he requested, the sheet slips off and she’s bare. Sugar pushes her messy braid over her shoulder where it coils down her spine.
“Like this?”
“Yeah,” Rust confirms, taking his time in the next drag, “stretch your arms out, lower your chest— no, all the way, Sugar.”
Her eye, peeking over her bicep, doesn’t move from him.
“The fucking sight of you,” he mutters, “Now how can I keep you just like that?”
“What’s all this for?” Sugar asks, smile hidden behind her arm as she adjusts her hips.
“My health and safety,” he replies, deadpan, hand falling onto his stomach where the skin is still pink from having staples removed. Rust stands with a grunt, dropping his filter into an ashtray, before walking to Sugar’s bed. “Now, don’t move and just let me figure a few things out.”
Standing behind her, Rust pulls on one of her ankles and then the other until her knees are on the edge of her mattress. He yanks her hips back so her ass is where it’s supposed to be and smoothes his hands up her back, feeling her spine arch and stretch. Her body still loose with sleep in the morning sunlight. Rust covers her shoulder blades with his hands, holding them down into the mattress.
“Try pushing your hips back,” he says. She presses against his pelvis, the heat of her bleeding into his skin, and he smiles at the annoyed noise she makes against her sheets when she can’t move any further, “This might work— how much rope do we have?”
“I’m not some bitch who keeps killing her studs. I can stay still,” she promises with a laugh.
“You sound sure and all, honey, but it’s been, what, four weeks, now, and you’ve been eyeing me like you’re ready to pounce,” he states, standing straighter with his hands fitting to the curve of her waist. “Can you understand my trepidation of wrasslin’ you? I’m very fragile right now, Sugar.”
“The hell you are,” she scoffs, folding her arms and resting her cheek on her forearms while he rubs the heel of his palms into her lower back. “You moved a keg yesterday.”
“It was empty,” he argues, before he pushes her hips forward a few inches to look down between them, “have you missed me?”
“We’re together everyday.”
“That’s not what I mean—” Rust guides her hand to the wet spot on his briefs— “that’s you, honey.”
Sugar tries to hide her face but he’s already clocked the redness on her cheeks, light and splotchy between her shoulder blades.

Prince Harry Is Right, and It’s Not Just a Matter of Royal Gossip

Opinion Columnist
Any close follower of the British media should not have been surprised that after Prince Harry fell in love with Meghan Markle, the biracial American actress, years of vitriolic, even racist coverage followed.
Whipping hatred and spreading lies — including on issues far more consequential than a royal romance — is a specialty of Britain’s atrocious but politically influential tabloids.
People like me, uninterested in celebrities, shouldn’t dismiss the brouhaha around Harry’s memoir as mere celebrity tittle-tattle. He has made credible, even documented claims that his own family refused to stand up against their ugly, sustained attacks against Meghan. In other words, it appears that Britain’s most revered institution, funded by tens of millions in taxpayer funds annually, plays ball with one of its most revolting institutions.
At the very least, it seems clear by now where some senior members of the royal family position themselves in all this.
Among those in attendance at a Christmas lunch in mid-December were Camilla, Britain’s queen consort; Dame Judi Dench; Dame Maggie Smith; and some less luminous celebrities, including the acid-tongued columnist Jeremy Clarkson and the broadcaster and columnist Piers Morgan.
Both Clarkson and Morgan have been among the foremost participants in the multiyear media evisceration of Camilla and King Charles’s daughter-in-law, Meghan.
Clarkson has prior ties to Camilla. His farm was featured in an edition of Country Life magazine that she guest-edited. Just days after that Christmas lunch, he blasted Meghan when he wrote in his column in The Sun, “At night, I’m unable to sleep as I lie there, grinding my teeth and dreaming of the day when she is made to parade naked through the streets of every town in Britain while the crowds chant ‘Shame!’ and throw lumps of excrement at her.”
The palace made no comment about that. Clarkson publicly apologized for the column after a fierce public outcry.
As for Morgan, he has called Camilla “a class act.” More than a decade ago, when many in Britain were still resistant to her becoming a queen consort due to her adulterous affair with Charles, Morgan wrote in his Daily Mail column that “I can’t actually think of a single other woman in the world better suited, or more suitably experienced,” to be queen.
Morgan quit his ITV morning show in a huff in March 2021 after being roundly condemned for saying that he did not believe Meghan’s claim to have been suicidal during her first pregnancy and that he “wouldn’t believe her if she read me a weather report.” It wasn’t his first such diatribe about her, and it wouldn’t be his last.
But he said Camilla soon “demanded to know when I’d be back on television.”
Clarkson and Morgan are just two players in a swamp of commentators and tabloids that are intimately tied to the royals they cover. Just before Queen Elizabeth II died, Charles hosted the editor of The Sun, something the editor said was a regular occurrence. She wrote that he was always “jovial and cheery” with her. And Charles and Camilla recently hired The Daily Mail’s longtime deputy editor as their communications secretary.
What could Charles and Camilla think they are conveying by maintaining a camaraderie with a tabloid press that has behaved so noxiously to members of their own family, with articles that have been so ugly, and even racist?

In 2016, days after Harry and Meghan’s relationship went public, The Daily Mail called Meghan, who, as a child, lived in Los Angeles, “(almost) straight outta Compton” — an allusion to the ’80s hip-hop album and later movie. The Mail described her family’s picturesque Los Angeles neighborhood as “gang-scarred.”
For years, royals have had to fend off tabloid attacks. But the vitriol that has been applied to Meghan, and a double standard to which she has been subjected, is palpable.
Once, after avocado toast was served at a lunch she hosted, The Daily Mail ran a story with the headline “How Meghan’s Favourite Avocado Snack — Beloved of All Millennials — Is Fuelling Human Rights Abuses, Drought and Murder.” The Daily Express similarly proclaimed, “Meghan Markle’s Beloved Avocado Linked to Human Rights Abuse and Drought, Millennial Shame.” The same tabloids ran approving stories associating Prince William and Princess Kate with avocados, with no mention of human rights abuses.
When Kate was seen holding her pregnancy bump The Daily Mail said she did so “tenderly.” When Meghan did that, it was described as an act of vanity and “virtue signaling” that implied “the rest of us barren harridans deserve to burn alive in our cars.”
Most insidiously, Meghan has been portrayed as a threat to other royal family members, even the children. The Daily Express claimed that Meghan may have put “Princess Charlotte’s life at risk.” How? By including at her wedding lilies of the valley, which shouldn’t be ingested; however, they were also used at the weddings of Kate and Princess Eugenie without disapprobation.
Queen Elizabeth, too, was portrayed as Meghan’s victim. Especially after Harry and Meghan stepped down from their royal roles, the tabloids repeatedly claimed that Meghan had endangered the queen’s health.
Harry has said that he pleaded with his family to publicly condemn this ugly campaign. But instead, Harry says in his book, “Spare,” the couple were ordered to remain silent, even against outright lies. “Never complain, never explain,” was the royal motto.
But the royal family isn’t always so complacent.
When a plastic surgeon claimed on his Instagram account that Harry’s sister-in-law Kate was receiving Botox, Kensington Palace officials issued an official condemnation and denial. They reportedly got at least one tabloid to take down a story claiming Kate was wearing hair extensions.
William and Kate issued a strong statement and threatened legal action against the magazine Tatler after it called Kate “perilously thin.” “Swathes of passages” the palace had reportedly objected to were deleted from the story.
Even less prominent members get explicit protection. Once, the palace defended Charles’s brother Prince Edward’s use of a private jet instead of an available train.
Harry has claimed that while the royal family stayed silent about the media’s abuse of his wife, behind the scenes it leaked, planted or influenced stories with the worst elements of the Royal Rota — representatives of news organizations that cover the palace in a preferential press pool — in return for favorable coverage for themselves or distractions from their own brewing scandals. After telling only his immediate family about plans he and Meghan were making to travel or distance themselves from royal duties, Harry says in “Spare,” those plans appeared in the tabloids attributed to unnamed sources.
It’s not just a matter of Harry’s suspicions. The Daily Mail columnist Dan Wootton has said “much of the negativity towards the couple is coming from within the royal family. The royal family, and staff of the royal family, are the ones that are very often leaking these stories to the press.”
Other prominent members of the Royal Rota agree. Robert Jobson, the royal editor for The Evening Standard, told the Australian morning show “Sunrise” that “they can deny it all they like until they’re blue in the face, but there’s been an awful lot of leaking, particularly from Kensington Palace,” the office of William and Kate. In tweeting an early report of the rift between Harry and his kin, Richard Palmer of The Daily Express said the royal family “and their advisors recognise the value of a symbiotic relationship in communicating with the public who pay for them. I’m not sure Harry does.”
Another journalist, Omid Scobie, claimed in an interview for an ITV documentary in 2021 that William was planting stories about his brother’s mental health in the press. The station reportedly received a legal threat from William — so much for the policy of silence — and scrubbed Scobie’s statement from the show.
The British journalist Andrew Marr, a confessed fan of Queen Elizabeth II, says Harry’s claims are important. After all, Marr said it well: “Either well-known journalists are making a lot of stuff up, just sitting at their laptops at the kitchen table inventing the detail of feuds and private confrontations, or a particularly confidence-rotting form of anonymous briefing has been taking place.”
Maybe they could be part of an inquiry similar to the one after the phone hacking scandal by Rupert Murdoch’s tabloids.
This sort of royal relationship with the media is not new, of course. In a BBC documentary, Charles’s former press secretary said William was furious that when he was 16 The Sun published the details of his first meeting with Camilla. The author of the story said the source was Mark Bolland, Charles’s deputy private secretary and public relations adviser.
It was all transactional. Sandy Henney, a former press secretary, said of Charles: “When I joined his office in ’93 he was going through some pretty virulent criticism — ‘Bad father; unloving husband.’ I think he was pretty hurt.” She said Bolland worked to change Charles’s image. Leaking to the media was reportedly one way to curry favor. “Brilliant manipulator,” Henney said of Bolland. “He got the result that he wanted.” (Bolland denied these accusations.)
Bolland was also accused of approving a News of the World article claiming a 16-year-old Harry had taken drugs, in exchange for praise for Charles for taking Harry to a rehab center, illustrated with what the tabloid said were photos of the visit. Harry writes that the seven-page tabloid spread left him sickened and horrified, and the photos were from an earlier official visit he had made to the center. Bolland later admitted the sequence of events were distorted to make Charles look better. The coverage, after Diana’s death, spun the portrayal of Charles. “No more the unfaithful husband,” as Harry puts it in his memoir. “Pa would now be presented to the world as the harried single dad.”
I think I’ve made the case that Harry and Meghan have gotten a raw deal.
And I haven’t even mentioned that in response to all of this vitriol, would-be violent actors rose from the woodwork. Neil Basu, a high-level British law enforcement official, recently confirmed that Meghan received credible threats to her life, namely from the far right.
Even so, shortly after they left Britain, Harry and Meghan had their official security pulled abruptly. Harry says in “Spare” that his father didn’t step up then to help pay for replacement, despite now reportedly planning to shoulder 3 million pounds annually to provide security for his brother Andrew, accused of sexual exploitation of young women and girls (which he has denied), after Andrew’s official security ended, and whose 12 million pound settlement with an accuser was also reported to be partly paid by the queen.
The way the tabloids can spread unhinged claims, generating a sense of urgent threat to create a social frenzy, can be used for targets other than a stray royal.
During the run-up to the Brexit vote, among other outright big lies, British tabloids screeched that, thanks to a secret conspiracy being cooked up in Brussels, the European Union would allow hordes of Turks to invade Britain, commit crimes, have too many babies and bankrupt the social services. Turkey isn’t even a member of the E.U. and is nowhere near becoming one. Brexit narrowly won, with damaging consequences still unfolding for Britain.
My impression from his memoir is that Harry wants to make a crusade of applying sunlight to corrupt media practices and his family’s participation in them. If he succeeds in fighting the vile forces that he feels contributed to his mother’s death and imperiled his newfound love, he might bring a greater sense of decency in Britain, and maybe even curtail the power of the worst practices in media. Good luck to him.

I still don't believe piracy is the real reason the raven boys books didn't do well. Do I love the books? More or less. I think they're certainly good if you're 13-15 year old dealing with the angstiest period of your life. I don't think Goodreads is a good place for primary marketing. I don't think 2013-2016 was a great time to be releasing teen fiction as every teen dystopia was dying on the vine. I don't think she wrote a series that would ever be marketable as a TV or Movie property. I don't think the books are even possible to translate to a visual medium. I think presale of The Raven Boys movie rights before the book had ever really hit shelves meant that there was a big initial cash flow before they realized the movie would never really be made. A bunch of teens walking around and talking about relationships? Most of the book happens in internal monologue. Not really gonna move numbers for the age demo, Nicholas Sparks is one of the few guys who can pull that off. The cover art is very... Not edgy enough to attract the alt folks. Six Of Crows sold most of it's copies by being so edgy they had to read it, no matter what bs was between the covers. If Stiefvater had dropped this during the 90s comic book boom of holofoil covers we're in now with special store exclusive fomo only editions and sprayed edges to sell style over substance, I think it might have helped. But she published during possibly the deadest time I can remember to do anything for teens or in fantasy in general. I do think her demo was teen girls with no money so there would be piracy. I do not believe for an instant that she found more than five comments total of people saying they'd choose piracy over purchasing. The authors drive to embellish how much hate they receive is legendary. I think blaming piracy is a great scapegoat for poor sales, poor follow through, and poor publisher support. Maggie Stiefvater was not Stephanie Meyers. There was no leak of her book before it could be published. There was a two year wait for book 4 to drop. People age out of books and the years 2013-2016 was a marked end of the young millenials and a confusing pause as gen Z kids started working their way into older mediums. She was unable, mid series, to find a new audience as the old audience moved on. I was around and actively buying her books from 2012 to 2014. About four different life changes happened in the faze from me graduating, living at home with no plans, and then enlisting. I guarantee college kids didn't have the money to keep up with the last series they read in high school. Gen Z was not angsty enough to find their way en masse to her works. So her books dropped in sales because of a cultural shift, a dead zone in publishing sales, and a gap in age group carry over.

I just read the beef recap between Halsey and Maggie from that tumblr thread you linked (thank you!) and you’re right—I really feel like that’s not even real or it happened in some alternate universe that seemed so so random and weird of Maggie to just…snap?? 😭 over a song??
yeah, it was truly surreal. i mean, sure, maggie was suffering from severe health problems at that time, but that’s still no excuse for her questionable behaviour. and as someone in the replies of the og ask mentioned correctly, maggie also made some inappropriate and mocking comments about a breakup halsey was going through at the time which is just another level of shitty. i mean this woman was in her mid thirties back then...... like, it's a little baffling to me she thought making comments about that was okay just because halsey was somewhat famous.

Costume Party
Pairing: Will Halstead x reader
Summary: Y/N and Will are going to a costume party together, and they each agree to choose what the other person has to wear
Requested: No
Warnings: light swearing, sexy costumes (if you even count that as a warning), and a reference to sex
Word Count: 1,120 Words
Tumblr media
“Don’t even think about it,” I tell Adam as I walked into the bullpen of the Intelligence Unit. Being a cop was amazing, but embarrassing myself in front of my friends was not.
“I wasn’t going to say anything,” Adam said and tried to hold a straight face as he glanced at what I was wearing.
“Why are you dressed like that?” Jay asked me.
“Why don’t you ask your brother? He’s the one that picked it out,” I answer and look down at my costume. Will and I were attending a costume party tonight that one of his co-workers was having, and to make things fun, we decided that we would get to decide what the other had to wear. However, I didn’t think things would end up like this. Will had chosen for me to be a sexy nurse, and the costume, well, it was definitely more revealing than I had planned. The V-neck at the top went down a bit too far, showing off way more than I would have liked, and the dress itself wasn’t that long. And when I say that, I mean it barely went down mid-thigh. I could barely move without feeling like some part of me was being exposed.
“Its not that bad,” Jay admitted. “I mean, I’ve seen more revealing costumes.”
“If I sit down anywhere, I would moon half of the people in the room! I call that being bad. There’s no way I can wear this out. No way!” I confess.
“Well, you look great,” Adam pointed out. “I’m pretty sure most of the women in Chicago can’t pull that costume off. You should be proud.”
“I hate men sometimes,” I mutter to myself and take a seat on the edge of my desk, which just so happened to be the closest to Voight’s office. “Shit! Voight’s not still here, is he? If he sees me in this, I’m dead.”
“Nope. He left a while ago. The rest of us are just here to finish up some paperwork” Jay responded and wrote something down on the piece of paper in front of him.
“Wait. Who else is here?” I ask. Before either Jay or Adam could respond, I got my answer in the form of my blonde haired, badass bestfriend.
“No. Uh-uh. You can’t wear that out anywhere,” Hailey spoke as she emerged from the hallway that led to the locker room and interview room. “You need to go change right now.”
“Oh come on! Its not that bad,” Jay exclaimed, which earned him a smack across the back of his head from his partner. “Hey! What the hell was that for?”
“You know what that was for,” Hailey replied and took her seat before flicking her eyes over to me. “At least tell me you got Will back for making you wear that.”
“Oh, don’t worry. I did” I say and smirk. At that moment, I spotted my ginger haired boyfriend making his way up the steps, and I chuckled softly when I saw him in his costume. While Will had made me dress up as medical professional, I made him dress up as a police officer, but the costume was, well, lets just say stripper-like. The costume was split into two parts. The shirt, which read POLICE, went down just past Will’s pecs, and was made from a see-through material. Because the shirt was so short, the rest of Will’s abdomen was out in the open with nothing covering it. Then there were the leather shorts, which were not even close to making it halfway down Will’s thighs. There was also a cute little leather cap that came along with the costume, and it tied the whole outfit together perfectly.
“Y/N, I can’t wear this. I cannot let my co-workers see me like this,” Will told me as he climbed up the last step. Jay tried to hold in his laugh, but at seeing his older brother up close, he let it slip past his lips.
“Yeah? Well Adam already saw my ass as I walking to my desk, and Jay has seen more of my chest than he did when I went undercover as a stripper, so its your turn” I inform him. “Man, I can’t wait to see the faces Natalie and Maggie make when they see you in this.”
Will shook his head and crossed his arms over his chest. “I hate you. I hate you so much. I don’t even know why I’m dating you.”
“Would someone care to remind Will why he’s dating me?” I ask my three co-workers.
Hailey was quick to respond, and immediately spun her chair so that she was facing Will. “Because Y/N is the bravest, most headstrong woman to ever set foot in Chicago,” she spoke. “She’s also the only woman who can put up with your attitude.”
“That was spot on, Hails. Good job,” I praise.
“So are we really going to wear these out? Because I’ve gotten about 5 wedgies already, and I’ve barely had this thing on for 20 minutes,” Will said and pulled at the legs of his shorts.
I laughed and walked over to Will, placing my hands on his chest. “Oh, we’re definitely wearing these to the party.”
“What? But don’t you hate your costume as well?” Will asked me.
“Yeah, but that’s not the point,” I say. “You know I only picked that costume out for you because you picked this one out for me, right? You started this whole thing, and now you’re going to have to live with it for the night.”
“Send me pictures. Please send me pictures,” Jay begged.
“Y/N, don’t you dare,” Will retorted, but he was too late because I had already managed to take a few pictures with my phone.
“I’ll delete the pictures on two conditions,” I say.
“Okay. Anything,” Will responded.
“One, we never pick each other’s Halloween costumes again,” I state.
“Yeah. Of course. What’s the second thing?” Will asked me.
“You’re buying the next time we head to Molly’s,” I conclude.
“Done. I’ll do anything to never have this happen again,” Will said.
“Um, guys? Don’t you have a party to get to?” Jay questioned and smirked at us. I laughed and walked over to his desk, giving him his second back-of-the-head smack for the night. “Hey!”
“You deserved it,” Will and I comment at the same time as we headed towards the stairs.
“Have fun you two,” Adam shouted after us.
“Be safe,” Hailey added.
“Oh, and don’t do anything you’ll regret. I’m not ready to become an uncle just yet,” Jay called out.
“Shut up, Jay!” Will and I say in unison before heading down the stairs.

Rereading The Raven Cycle and commenting on its use of Latin pt. 2 (contains spoilers, obviously)
Tumblr media
The Raven Boys, p.114 internec-
It's the first Latin class we as readers get to witness. As Gansey and Ronan enter the classroom, Whelk stops writing on the blackboard mid-word to eavesdrop on their conversation. The word he's writing is quite certainly internecare.
Considering the stories that have been passed down from Ancient Rome, it's perhaps not surprising that the Latin language knows multiple expressions for to kill. English speakers might be acquainted with some of them, such as exstinguere. Caedere might have a familiar ring to it as well, because that's where the English suffix -cide (used in homicide, suicide, etc.) originates from. There's also occidere, which can be used to express the slaying of someone in battle. And then there's necare, which is often the first one Latin students learn (because it belongs in the first and arguably easiest conjugation). That’s where the word internecare derives from, which translates to to destroy, to exterminate. Taking Whelk's fate at the end of Book 1 into account, as well as Maggie’s infamous use of foreshadowing, she probably couldn't have chosen a more apt word for Whelk to write on the blackboard in this scene.
If you would like more information on the various ways in which to say to kill in Latin (and honestly, who wouldn't?), here's a very educative list:
Disclaimer: I only started to learn Latin a couple of months ago, so my knowledge of it is in no way all-encompassing. So if you find any mistakes in my ramblings, please do not hesitate to correct me – cheers!
(For page numbers, I use my heavily annotated (read: scribbled in) US paperback copies of The Raven Cycle series.)

Thoughts on Grey’s Anatomy: 17X7
SPOILERS AHEAD!!!
They did it! I can’t believe it! They actually killed DeLuca off! I’m so happy right now! As long time readers will know I have never been a Andrew DeLuca fan and I speculated back in the summer that they might be planning to write his character off after it was revealed that the planned finale for Season 16 included an explosion that was supposed to claim the life of one of the characters. I speculated that DeLuca was the most likely candidate with Tom and Jackson being the most likely runners up because I felt that they had gone as far as they could with DeLuca’s character and there wasn’t much left for him to do on the show.
Add that to the fact that the actor who plays DeLuca said a bunch of stuff to the press last year where he spoiled some pretty major plot points and stated that he knew things about where the show was going when he hadn’t even read a single script for the season yet and I was pretty sure his days were numbered. That being said, the show had teased us a bunch of times about firing, killing, or writing off the character during seasons 15 and 16 and they never went through with it so a big part of me was skeptical that they ever would.
But it turns out I was right! His days were numbered and they wound up killing him off in the Mid-Season Premiere! I’m still in shock. It hasn’t really sunk in yet to be honest. This episode honestly made me wish we’d gotten to see the remaining episodes and finale of Season 16 as planned. Based on what we know it looks like the plan was for Richard, Bailey, Meredith, and Carina to stage an intervention, DeLuca was to go away and get treatment and return to the hospital only to die tragically in an explosion.
Season 17 would have opened with the characters finding out about that and mourning his death and I think it would have been interesting to see Meredith navigate that as in the Finale Hayes asked her out and she said yes. It seems likely that if the COVID-19 Pandemic had not hit when it did and shut down production and altered filming for this season we would have seen Meredith and Hayes go out for a drink and start dating.
Seeing Meredith navigate the loss of her ex-boyfriend who she was no longer close to while in the beginning stages of her relationship with Hayes would have been very interesting and I’m sorry we didn’t get to see that. I’m also sorry that due to safety restrictions Meredith and Hayes haven’t had much screen time this season, but it looks like that’s about to change as I’ll get into a bit later.
Back to the episode at hand. I never liked DeLuca as a character and I hated him with Meredith so I’m glad that they killed him off and that we never have to deal with that nonsense again. I’m glad that they caught the human trafficker Opal and took those people down. I was never super invested in that storyline so I’m glad they wrapped that up. I feel so bad for Carina though. She’s a great character and is wonderfully acted by Stefania Spampinato.
My heart broke for her in this episode because while I won’t miss her brother I know that she will and will be absolutely gutted when she finds out that he’s died especially after she worked so hard to get him help and treatment for his Bipolar Disorder. I’m glad she has Maya there to support her.
LOL at Bailey sleeping through the whole damn episode! What did I miss indeed! That poor woman slept through DeLuca getting stabbed, almost dying, not dying, having surgery twice, and then actually dying as well as the other shenanigans going on at the hospital. I loved that she was asleep at Meredith’s bedside especially after they spent a good chunk of Season 16 fighting.
I also feel really bad for Richard in that he’s obviously grateful that DeLuca helped save his life and wanted to help and when Owen turned him down because it wasn’t a good idea for him to scrub in Richard lurked in the background in the OR gallery the whole time to make sure that everything was okay. Plus he can’t talk to Meredith about it right now because she’s in a coma which must be so difficult for him. The extra stress also puts his sobriety at risk and that worries me.
I got to be honest I am struggling to understand Teddy’s point of view this season. She’s being really awful! She’s being cruel to Tom. She was cruel to Owen. I don't know what Teddy expected to have happen. Both Cristina and Amelia walked away from their marriages to Owen and moved on with their lives in large part because they realized Owen was in love with Teddy and always would be.
And then she finally gets what she’s wanted all these years and the minute she realizes Amelia’s baby might be Owen’s and not Link’s she runs back to Tom and has a several months long affair with him and then drops him like a hot potato as soon as she realizes that the baby is Link’s and after Owen finds out about the affair she refuses to talk to Tom for months and then comes crawling back to him and wants to be his friend after Owen makes it clear he wants nothing to do with her. WTF?
I feel bad for Tom. I really like his character. He’s super interesting and complex and he deserves better than someone who treats him like that. Tom is a good man at heart and he treated Teddy like gold and in return she’s done nothing but break his heart and stomp all over him when he’s already down. He deserves someone better. I’ve never been an Owen fan, but honestly Teddy is behaving so horribly I’m on his side on this one.
They had some great scenes in the OR together, but Teddy clearly read too much into it. Every time he gives her a crumb she’s convinced he’s forgiven her and wants to give her a second chance and that’s not it at all. Owen has been clear. He doesn’t forgive her and he doesn’t want to get back together with her. All he wants is to co-parent peacefully and work together as colleagues because he values her skills as a surgeon. That’s it.
It was cute to see Teddy Face Timing with Leo. I’m glad they are finding safe ways to incorporate the kids into the story. Speaking of which, the scene where Amelia and Maggie tell Zola that her Mom has been placed on a vent and she might not come off it was heartbreaking. That kid has grown into her own as an actress and really holds her own in that scene.
Her line about how she didn’t want them to tell Bailey or Ellis yet because they’re too young to understand broke me heart. Zola’s only a few years older than them but she’s old enough to understand the impact of what’s happening in a way that they can’t. And she remembers how hard it was when Derek died. When Cristina left. When Alex left. She doesn’t want to put her siblings though the same thing especially when Alex’s departure is still so fresh for them and they never got a chance to really know their Dad. The fact that Zola can recognize that at such a young age is raw and heart breaking.
We saw Winston and Maggie reconnect this episode which would have been super hot and enjoyable if Meredith hadn’t just been put on a ventilator! The scene where Jackson showed up looking for Maggie was too funny! I loved the scenes with Jackson, Link, and Winston in the backyard having beers! Winston has a great sense of humour and seems to be a calming presence. I like the idea of those three being friends.
Link’s face when he realized that Winston doesn’t know that Maggie and Jackson used to date and are also step-siblings. I’ll be interested to see Winston’s reaction when that comes out. I loved Link’s rant about how worried he was about Meredith and what her declining health and potential death was doing and would do to Amelia. Did anyone else catch that he called Amelia his wife? I’m calling it. They’re foreshadowing an Amelink wedding!
I liked hearing Jackson talk about how Meredith is family and they’re all worried and Winston’s comments about how all they can do is just keeping moving physically and metaphorically. I’m also loving Amelia and Maggie’s wardrobes this season. Their sweaters in this episode were gorgeous! Hats off to the wardrobe department! They’re looking good!
I loved seeing Jo and Hayes work together again because I love their friendship, but to be honest I was expecting more of the friendly teasing and banter of last season where she egged him on about Meredith and they traded barbs. Their scenes in this episode were a lot more intense and agitated. She totally played him with that line about Meredith.
He kept saying no to taking Luna to see her Mom and so Jo made it personal for him. If Meredith asked to see her kids Hayes would never say no and he would move heaven and earth for her. By making that connection Jo got him to agree to her plan. I also love that the reason he kept saying no in the beginning was because of what happened to Meredith.
She went from laughing and joking to being put on a vent and he doesn’t want to run the risk with any other patient and it’s obviously eating him up inside. He misses her. He cares about her and he’s clearly terrified about the possibility of her not waking up. That being said, Jo’s line where she compared Alex leaving her for Izzie because he found out he had kids he didn’t know he had and sending her a heartfelt letter to Hayes spending years watching his wife and the mother of his two boys die of cancer was way out of line. Super not okay. I really think that Jo is going to adopt that baby. I think that’s why they are setting up her interest in OBGYN.
In other news, Nico is still a terrible boyfriend to Levi. I honestly don’t know why Levi puts up with him. Levi really shone in this episode I think. He felt responsible for what happened, but instead of bungling things and making things worse like he might have done in the past he got out of his own way and asked Dr. Khan who was a vascular surgeon in Pakistan prior to immigrating to the U.S. to take his place.
I feel like this episode implies that the Beach is limbo now as I don’t know how else DeLuca could have ended up there as he wasn’t someone who was close to Meredith the way that Derek, George, Richard, and Bailey are. Not sure how I feel about that as I was kind of liking the is it a COVID dream is it the afterlife ambiguity.
Onto next week’s promo! I’m not excited that they appear to be setting up an episode in which the other characters mourn DeLuca’s passing as none of the other characters apart from Carina were really that close to him. They spent the last two seasons establishing that everyone hated his guts, considered him a nuisance, and only put up with him because they had to. So to me the other characters mourning him doesn’t feel authentic or real. It just feels forced.
There are several things I am excited about though. Seeing Maggie’s reaction to his death I think will be interesting. She was visibly upset and ran to his side when Alex beat him up in Season 13 and mourning the loss of your ex-boyfriend who you were no longer close to while being in a committed relationship with someone new I think is an interesting dynamic. She’s kinda standing in for Meredith here because she’s on a vent.
I’d like to see Catherine support Richard and make up for her horrible behaviour last season. And the best thing of all: Hayes!!! In the promo trailer we see Hayes sitting at Meredith’s bedside talking to her about how she needs to fight and how they all need her to fight. Bring it on! It’s about damn time! And Derek’s back and he’s … fishing? I’m excited to see what happens there and if they actually get to talk and have a real conversation this time. It has also been announced that Sarah Drew will be returning for a cameo as Dr. April Kepner this season so I’m excited for that!
Until next time!

Jake Gyllenhaal and Jealous Liz (October 2010 - February 2011)
Now, there’s a lot to say about Jake and Taylor. The time they got together was a time when he was promoting his movie, Love and Other Drugs, and she was about to drop Speak Now. So at first glance, it look a lot like a traditional PR stunt. However, they do not have a first public meeting -- something that Taylor has with a lot of her other PR relationships (think Calvin at the Fund Fair or Harry at the KCAs), and seemed generally more camera shy.
Jake’s costar in Love and Other Drugs, Anne Hathaway, was also single at the time, and arguably a PR relationship between the two of them would’ve drummed up significantly more buzz for the film, so stunting with Taylor seems an odd choice.
Jake also reportedly annoyed Taylor with how much he wanted to hide from the press, which is interesting. I’m not totally certain if they were real or not, but I’ll put all of their stuff in here, because it’s interesting to note Liz’s reaction to all of it, despite her relationship:
23 October 2010 - Emma Stone hosts SNL. Both Taylor and Jake G show up to support her, supposedly they’ve already started dating at this point and this was their first public appearance together.
"They walked around together backstage, but they were careful not to be seen too close. It was hard to tell if they were together, but everyone was shocked that she brought him," a source told People magazine.
Notice the lack of public meeting. Strange that they just showed up together dating.
24 October 2010 - Liz tweets about listening to Never Grow Up
Tumblr media
October 2010 - Taylor writes All Too Well, the first of the three “Nashville songs” -- All Too Well, State of Grace, Stay Stay Stay-- that were written for the Red album before she moved to LA, based on the fact that she said she started writing for Red slightly before Speak Now was released.
We also know All Too Well has to have been written in 2010 because what the copyright record for it says:
Tumblr media
Now, it seems to me that this is too soon to be about Jake. It’s obviously a breakup song, and Taylor and Jake have only just started dating (unless they had a secret dating history we don’t know about). It would be weird for her to be writing all this about him while they’re still dating.
All Too Well could be about any of the three women I’ve spoken previously about in this masterpost. However, I’m going to try to make the case that this song is for Liz:
All Too Well is Liz’s favorite song from Red. She has said so on multiple occasions. Years later, when she came to watch Taylor’s Reputation tour in Glendale, Taylor even played it for her as the surprise song. Sure, it could just be that Liz is just a fan, but the song fits where we are in the timeline. Liz has moved on with someone else. Taylor is trying to get over it, but she can’t help but think back to the past she remembers “all too well.”
If the song is about a woman, lines like “back before you lost the one real thing you’ve ever known” reads to me as Taylor making a (possibly unfounded) dig at closeting. All Too Well also carries the bad driving metaphor with “almost ran the red,” which runs throughout a lot of the other Liz songs on Red, and which Liz will later reference herself in her own music. The lines in the bridge about “asking for too much” and “running scared,” remind me of Taylor insisting she was single during Valentine’s Day, despite spending it with Liz, only to turn around and miss her once Liz got a boyfriend. Lines about loss of innocence are also interesting, when we think about that L Chat post about Liz from earlier...
Of course, obviously, you can think this song is about whoever you want. If you wanna claim it for JH or Joe Jonas or Taylor Lautner or maybe even some girl Taylor went to high school with, be my guest. I personally don’t buy it being about Emily in a post-Dear John world, and the timeline doesn’t read as Jake to me, so I’m giving it to Liz!
25 October 2010 - Speak Now is released. In the album’s prologue, she specifies that the song “Long Live” is for her band, which is interesting to me, considering that the bridge of the song sounds like it might be about a relationship, and the secret message of the song is “For you,” which sounds oddly specific:
Will you take a moment? Promise me this That you’ll stand by me forever But, if God forbid, fate should step in And force us into a goodbye If you have children someday When they point to the pictures, Please tell ‘em my name
The secret message for Mine is “Toby,” which is the name of the actor who played her love interest during the song, making it make no sense for the song to be about him (and, in my eyes, making it more likely she was trying to cover up who the song was really for). We’ve already discussed Story of Us having “CMT Awards” and Back to December having “Tay,” so I won’t beat you over the head with those.
Tumblr media
Unlike the original handwritten lyrics to Sparks Fly, which featured the lyric “Get me with those brown eyes, baby,” the version that Taylor put on the Speak Now album had the lyric “hit me with those green eyes, baby,” with the eye color presumably being changed because Liz has green eyes:
Tumblr media
The secret message for Sparks Fly is “Portland, Oregon,” which is where Taylor and The Agency covered Tom Petty’s song American Girl in May 2009 during the height of early TayLiz.
26 October 2010 - Taylor and Jake are spotted together in Brooklyn getting lunch with Emma Stone:
Tumblr media
Liz does a sound check for Taylor for the Today Show. A video later gets posted on YouTube and someone leaves this comment noting Taylor and Liz’s chemistry:
Tumblr media
31 October 2010 - Taylor and Jake are spotted in Big Sur together and stay at California’s Post Inn Ranch.
Liz spends Halloween with her boyfriend:
Tumblr media
1 November 2010 - Taylor’s appearance on Ellen airs. Ellen asks her about Jake. Taylor says “I’m always optimistic about love. Yes, always, sometimes.”
2 November 2010 - Taylor and Jake are spotted in Santa Barbara together. They get ice cream, interact with fans, and Taylor reportedly laughs at everything Jake says.
16 November 2010 -  Jake attends the Love and Other Drugs premiere alone. This is interesting to me, considering if this was a PR relationship you would’ve thought he’d bring Taylor as his date. Still, Paula made some weird decisions in her time as Taylor’s publicist (like putting her with a carousel of 18 year olds), so this could just be Paula thinking that Taylor showing up at the premiere with him would be too obviously read as a stunt. Doesn’t rule it either way. Still, I think Anne would’ve been a better choice for PR for this.
Mid November - Perez Hilton alleges that Jake has picked up Taylor on his private jet to fly her to London because she was “feeling lonely.” Jake was in London promoting Love and Other Drugs so this seems very stunty to me personally.
22 November 2010 - Taylor attends the American Music Awards and wins Favorite Female Country Artist.
Tumblr media
Liz tweets congratulations at her and seems generally excited.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
24 November 2010 - Love and Other Drugs is officially released in theaters.
25 November 2010 - Taylor and Jake spend Thanksgiving in Brooklyn with Jake’s family.
Tumblr media
26 November 2010 - Liz seems to have spent Thanksgiving with Jason:
Tumblr media
27 November 2010 - Taylor and Jake are spotted in a coffee house in Nashville:
Tumblr media
And, maybe in response, Liz makes this weird and vaguely jealous Tweet:
Tumblr media
Now, I don’t know what this means. Maybe the “you” refers to Liz and she’s having what Carly Rae Jepsen would call “boy problems” -- feeling torn and overburdened between a best friend and boyfriend:
youtube
Or, perhaps, the “you” in this Tweet refers to Taylor, and Liz is trying to say that Jake is “using her up,” maybe meaning taking up her time. Or maybe Liz wasn’t referring to any of this. We can’t really know. Still, it’s interesting.
29 November 2010 - TayLiz hang out and Liz tweets about it. Perhaps to make up for the lack of time spent together since they both got boyfriends.
Tumblr media
30 November 2010 - Taylor and Jake have coffee in Nashville:
Tumblr media
1 December 2010 - Taylor writes a MySpace post about the CMTs.
Tumblr media
Liz tweets about watching Glee, meaning she’s the one who got Taylor hooked on the show and therefore interested in Dianna. Hilarious.
Tumblr media
2 December 2010 - Taylor calls Love and Other Drugs a “good movie” when asked about it, and won’t say anything more. She also adamantly refuses to talk about her personal life (This gives me 2018/19 Joe vibes, whatever that means).
3 December 2010 - Liz tweets that her favorite song on Speak Now is Last Kiss. She also tweets at Jason about his cooking:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
5 December 2010 - Jake is asked about Taylor and says this:
“One of the greatest parts about being in a relationship is the intimacy you share, but it can be difficult if you’re being watched the whole time.”
This reminds me so much of what Taylor’s currently saying about Joe. Interesting, looking back on it.
7 December 2010 - Jake and Taylor do the “maple latte” pap walk stunt in Brooklyn with Maggie and her daughter. This is the only series of photos of them that I think was a set-up, but that means it’s pretty gross this is the one they chose to bring a child into:
Tumblr media
I think the reason this was so obviously a pap walk was to get the “maple latte” in the shot. I’ve already speculated that Taylor had written All Too Well prior to her relationship with Jake, and this stunty pap walk would make sense if she needed to use him to cover for it.
8 December 2010 - Liz makes another weird vague possibly jealous tweet:

Now, in the context of Mine possibly being about Liz and Taylor saying that song is about her “tendency to run from love,” it’s possible Liz is shading Taylor’s pap walk with Jake the previous day. This tweet feels very “back before you lost the one real thing you’ve ever known.”
However, maybe she’s just really happy with Jason. I don’t know. I don’t know these people.
9 December 2010 - Taylor and Jake drive around LA, Jake yells at the paps.
Tumblr media
Compare these to those photos with Taylor Lautner earlier in the timeline. These are not nearly as staged. Take away from that whatever you will.
13 December 2010 - Taylor turns 21. Liz and Caitlin bring her a pizza. Liz tweets at Taylor that she’s changed her life. This is supposedly the birthday that Jake didn’t show up to that The Moment I Knew is about. Liz and Caitlin bringing her pizza if she’s sad about it would make sense...

31 December 2010 - Taylor and Liz spotted together in Nashville. They get Pei Wei and JustJared calls Liz a “gal pal.” Taylor seems upset, possibly about her whole Jake birthday thing. Or possibly something else.

Liz tweets about going for a run and listening to Speak Now:

5 January 2011 - Taylor and Jake break up.
19 January 2011 - Taylor and Jake are spotted together by fans in Nashville, first at a coffee shop and then at dinner. Jake did not have any other business in Nashville, so it can be assumed he came there to talk to Taylor:

CONCLUSION: Were Taylor and Jake real? I don’t know. They really only ever did that one pap walk and didn’t seem to publicly promote each other’s work, as far as I could find, despite both releasing projects while together. The one pap walk they did seems to maybe have been to cover for All Too Well, which had possibly already been written (likely about Liz) before Jake and Taylor started dating.
Were those tweets from Liz jealousy? Or am I reading too much into it?
Either way, Taylor’s had her fun, and now it’s time to maybe start thinking about getting back together with Liz. There’s just one problem: her boyfriend.

Edward hated places full of people. He hated it. It was overwhelming and loud, and it made him sweat through his clothes. He liked being alone, spending time on his own. If he had to be around people, he would choose adults. Not eight to twelve years olds running around him, making him anxious. If it weren't for his mother's sake, Edward wouldn't be there. And it wasn’t really his priority to make friends either.
He never really understood the concept of having a lot of friends. He had Nate, his mother, his aunt, Becky, and his grandfather. He had his little family and was very happy with it. Meeting new people and making friends wasn't his thing, it had never been. But Edward loved making his mother happy. Seeing her smile was his only purpose. He knew Y\N only wanted him to have a good childhood. He understood that. But while sitting alone at the corner at lunch on the first day, he was starting to question his decisions.
He could feel his anxiety taking over his brain, starting to panic. It hadn't even been twenty-four hours, and Edward was already losing his mind. He had no idea how to handle the camp for six weeks, and he was far from making any friends. He felt like he was failing while he was supposed to have fun.
"Hey, buddy." When Edward looked up, he saw one of the counselors standing with a tray in her hand. "Can I sit?" she asked, and Edward slowly nodded his head.
An adult, finally.
Unlike the kids of his age, Edward loved adults. He listened to old songs, read the old books. Everything his mother knew, he knew. So that way, Edward felt like talking to an adult was easier. It was easier than talking to any kid at his age, hell, it was easier than sitting in a room full of kids at his age.
"Not any friends yet?" She smiled like she knew how hard it was for him.
"I'm not the social type, to be honest." He shrugged, wanting to show he was okay with it.
"You're not wrong," She looked over her shoulder, eyeing all the kids around them. "kids are scary. But, it's not that bad to have a fencing partner."
Edward's eyes shined as he heard the sport. "Wait, there are people who know to fence here?" He really couldn't see the potential in those kids.
"Not much, only a few. But I think you would make a good competition." The counselor's words were the only things that made Edward smile since he had gotten there. "Well, I could try," he said, and it made him remember Nate. Maybe you'll find somebody who can beat you at poker, Nate had said as he gave Edward a new deck of cards. He doubted it then, but maybe he could find a friend. If kids there knew how to fence, one of them surely would know hot to play poker, right?
"Excellent, Ben! The winner and still undefeated champion from London, England Mister Benjamin Styles!" One of the counselors whose name was Maggie said, as Benjamin defeated his last opponent at fencing. His smile grew behind the mask. At last, his father's weird interests were getting handy. He had never thought he would use fencing anywhere. Maggie, the counselor, searched through the crowd around them to find someone who would be a good competitor against Benjamin. And her eyes found Edward, who was standing at the corner with a few new friends, he discovered it was not that bad to have friends, watching rather uninterested. "Ed, why don't you give it a try?"
Edward couldn't understand what she had said for a second as he felt all the eyes turned to him. Chill, he thought to himself, it's just fencing. It was one of the few things he was good at, so he was determined not to screw. Edward nodded and left the corner to wear the white suit.
He thanked and took his weapon from his new friend and walked to his opponent. As he got closer, his confidence and courage grew. Now, he was standing face to face with his opponent, whose name he didn't know.  "Fencers, ready?" They heard Maggie calling to them. Benjamin spun his weapon in his hand with confidence. "Ready," he said. Edward tossed the metal up with his foot and caught it mid-air. "All set."
They crossed their weapons. "On guard!" Edward tensed, and Benjamin strengthened his hold. "Fence!" Their weapons hit, and as Edward took a step forward, Benjamin took one back. While they moved with synchronization, the grass under their feet turned to sand. Boys dodged each other and got closer.
Edward felt like everything was moving around so fast. He hadn't felt that way in a long time. On the other hand, Benjamin was glad that he finally found someone who could fence but couldn't help feeling annoyed that his opponent was slightly better than him. They made their way's through trees. Clashing sounds were echoing around them, and the crowd, which was watching them, was getting bigger.
Kids ran away when they saw Edward and Benjamin coming towards them. Benjamin pushed Edward to a plank of carved wood and Edward dodged his weapon by turning around himself, and taking a step back. Edward jumped over a hay bail as Benjamin chased him. He rested against hay bails, and when Benjamin struck his weapon harder this time. As Benjamin tried to strike once more, Edward jumped on hay bails and caught his flying weapon mid-air.
"Nice catch!" Benjamin said.
"Thanks!" Edward was feeling more and more confident.
Benjamin saved his weapon, where it stuck and swung. Edward jumped not to get hit and landed in front of one of the cabins' veranda. Benjamin climbed the stairs to catch up with him. Metal clinking got more intense as Edward cornered Benjamin in the balcony. Benjamin took a step back to dodge his opponent, but Edward's weapon hit him in the chest. He rolled over the boarding of the veranda and found himself in the cold water.
"Sorry, let me help you!" Edward thrust out his hand to help him. Benjamin gripped his hand. "No, let me help you!" he said and pulled Edward to water.
"Why would you do that!" Edward yelled. Both of them drenched in water, now.
"Me?" Benjamin argued. "You pushed me in!"
"I didn't!"
"Okay!" Maggie chirped and boys got out of water.  "That was quite a show. I think we got ourselves a new camp champion from California Mister Edward Y\L\N!" They took their mask off as the crowd around them clapped. "Alright, boys shake hands." Benjamin and Edward turned to each other with a sigh.
The moment Edward saw Benjamin, he felt like he was looking to a mirror. Benjamin stretched his hand out, and Edward grasped his hand. They felt the electricity going through their bodies, as they shook hands, it was almost magical. Benjamin was sure he had never felt this strange before. The kids, around them, gasped and whispered.
"Look at them!"
"They look alike!"
Both of them withdrew their hands as Maggie walked to them. Benjamin scratched his neck with a confused look on his face. "Why is everyone staring?" Now, with a few people around them, including Freddie.
"Don't you see it?" Edward asked.
"See what?" Benjamin shrugged, becoming more confused.
"The resemblance between us," Edward said as if he was stating the obvious.
"Resemblance," Benjamin smirked. "between you and me?" Edward nodded his head with his eyes wide open.
"Let me see, turn sideways." Edward turned to his left with a puff, so Benjamin could examine. "Now, the other way." Benjamin squinted. "Well, your eyes much closer together than mine. Your ears. Well, don't worry, you'll grow into them. Your teeth are little crooked. Oh, and that nose!"
When Edward attempted to talk, Benjamin stopped him. "Hold on, I'm not, quite finished. You want to know the real difference between us?"
"Let me see," Edward raised his eyebrow. "I know a defense, and you don't, or I have class, and you don't. You take your pick." Both of them took a step ahead with an angry look on their faces. "Okay, Ben, Ed, it's enough," Maggie said them, but the longer she looked at them, she felt like there was a mirror in between. "Sorry, Ed, Ben." Benjamin and Edward turned to her when she got their names wrong. "Wow, you guys look alike."
The pair turned around with a puff and walked away as their friends followed them. Both Benjamin and Edward had the same question in their minds, thinking how weird it was. Benjamin quickly threw the thought at the back of his mind, but it lingered in Edwars's for a long time.
A few days after meeting Benjamin, Edward was sitting in his cabin after lunch with his friends and the kids from camp, playing poker. He had been winning since the first round. Edward was loving being at camp more and more every day. He was glad he had decided to trust his mother. He found that having friend wasn’t really bad and unnecessary.
Edward smiled as he put the cards in his hand down. "Sorry, boys. Two pairs." And he collected all the money sitting on the bed, arranging them. "So, that's it?" He looked around. "No more takers?"
As everyone around him rejected his offer, he heard the door creak. "I'll take a whack at it." Benjamin came into view with a sock full of coins, wearing vintage sunglasses and a shiny bomber jacket. He poured the coins to bed, making everyone watch in awe.
Edward shuffled the cards in his hands without breaking eye contact with Benjamin. "Take a seat, Styles." Benjamin sat down across Edward, took his glasses off, and put them on top of his head while leaning to bed. "Deal me in."
As the game continued, the tension between the two grew more and more. Edward put more money into the pile, trusting the cards in his hands. The more money Edward put, the more money Benjamin put. Both of them had a smug smirk on their faces.
"Tell you what I'm going to do," Benjamin said as he put his last money into the pile of coins, cash, and coupons. "I'll make you a little deal. Loser jumps into the lake after the game."
Edward took one last look to his cards, smiling. "Excellent."
"Butt naked."
"Even more excellent. Start unzipping Styles," Edward put his cards evenly on the bed so everyone could see it. "Straight in dimes."
Benjamin shook his head as if he was shocked. "You're good, Y\L\N."  He smiled as he continued shaking his head. "But, you're just not good enough." He turned the cards to him, making Edwards frown at the sight. "In your honor, a royal clash."
A minute after, Edward found himself walking on the deck, all the boys catcalling him, butt naked. When he reached the lake, Edward stopped and turned back to see everyone watching him. He faked a smile and made a soldier salute to Benjamin. Edward took a deep breath and turned to the lake again.
It's just water, he thought to himself, as his heartbeat fastened. It's just water. He took a deep breath and jumped into the cold water. "Grab his clothes," Benjamin whispered the boys around him. When Edward finally came out of the water, he saw everyone running away, leaving him behind with only his white sneakers.
He took the sneakers and covered himself as much as he could. Shivering from the cold, he walked to his cabin. Even though Edward was sure that he had social anxiety, he was too proud to let Benjamin win. So, the next thing he decided was to declare war.
Three days after the poker game, Benjamin was walking to his cabin after a basketball game with his best friend, Freddie.
"You're kinda becoming obsessed with this Edward guy." Benjamin had been talking about his victory for three days straight. So, Freddie was getting nervous about it. He knew Benjamin could be a total drama queen and do much sometimes. Maybe all the time. He didn't quite know when or where to stop.
"Don't be ridiculous, Freddie. I'm just having fun." Benjamin said, smiling to his friend.
"Are you sure?" Freddie asked, raising an eyebrow. "You know Uncle Harry would be mad if he heard that you were involved in mischief, again."
"Well, he won't hear anything, will he? Plus, everything is under control."
Freddie took a deep breath. "I hope so."
"You're turning into my dad, relax a bit."
"Being your friends comes with a damaging side, you know?" Benjamin laughed at his friend's remark. "I can't wait to take a nap. I'm so tired after that game."
As their cabin came into view, Freddie's eyes expanded. "I don't think that's possible, mate."
Benjamin frowned. "What, why?" He followed Freddie's look and saw their cabin. Their beds were lying around in the grass outside the cabin with their bags and clothes. Their pillows and blankets were on the roof, covered in red paint.
"You've gotta be kidding me."
It was in the middle of the night when Benjamin decided to strike with his genius evil plan. Edward and his cabin mates were sleeping, as Benjamin and his friends coated one of them with honey and the other with shaving cream. They poured oil, syrup, and honey on the floor and hanged strings around the room.
The first thing Edward saw when he woke up was a fake spider attached to a string across to his face. Their cabin was almost like a spider nest. Edward jolted from the bed to only step into the weird mixture of syrup, oil, and honey. When he groaned with disgust, his friends woke up to the same sight around them. Screams and groans were echoing inside the cabin.
Benjamin, Freddie, and their friend were just outside the window watching them, as the chaos took over the cabin. Edward tried to step out of the weird mixture, but his feet stumbled a red string that was impossible to see inside all that mess. The moment his feet touched it, three little water balloons fell from the roof, exploding and making the floor wet. As soon as he thought balloons missed him, a bigger one hit him in the head and drenched him.
"That boy is without a doubt the lowest, most awful creature that ever walked the planet!" Edward yelled with frustration as Benjamin watched him with laughs. "Thank you. Thank you very much."
"Morning, boys!" Marcus said them as he made his way to the cabin with Maggie following him. "Morning, Marcus!" They said in unison. But the moment they realized what was about to happen, their faces changed and they panicked. "Marcus!"
"Inspection time!" Marcus said, holding his megaphone. When he realized there wasn't still anyone coming out of the cabin, he walked toward it. But Benjamin quickly crossed his way and made him stop.
"No, Marcus! Do not go in there. One of the boys got sick last night, and it's a big big mess. Save yourself the aggravation, it's disgusting." Marcus put down the megaphone he was holding while Benjamin explained. "Well, if someone's sick, I must go in." He tried to open the door, but Benjamin didn't let him because he knew that if Marcus opened the door, a giant vat of syrup was going to fall on his head.
"Move aside, Benjamin."
"No, really, I insist. You can't go in there," said Benjamin. "He's highly contagious."
"Actually," Edward stopped watching the mess Benjamin he got himself into and decided to do something about it. "we're all quite fine in here unless Benjamin Styles knows something we don't know. I insist, open the door and see for yourself."
"Stand aside, Styles." Marcus pushed him away, and the minute he pulled the door open, a giant vat of syrup poured down on his head. Maggie pushed him to save him, but she stepped right under the bucket. So, she hit him in the back again, and they fell into the room.
As Marcus helped Maggie to get up, she grabbed a doll swinging from the ceiling. The moment she pulled the doll despite Benjamin's yells, she pulled on the fan, and feathers fell from it like snow, sticking to them and making them look like chickens.
"I told you it was a mess in here," Benjamin said with an anxious look on his face.
"He should know, he did it!" Edward yelled.
"You and you," Marcus pointed Edward and Benjamin. "pack your bags!"
The next thing they were walking through trees with their bags thinking that their parents were on the way to get them. Benjamin could only imagine how mad his father was, and Edward was afraid that his mother was only going to be disappointed in him. When they finally stopped at the beginning of the stairs, both of them were confused.
"You two are going to spend your time in the isolation cabin for the rest of the camp," Marcus said with a smile on his face, and Maggie pointed the cabin.
Benjamin and Edward looked at each other with disgust. The only thing the pair wanted was to face the wrath of their parents rather than staying in the same cabin for four weeks.
The first night in the isolation cabin was a total nightmare. The only thing Edward could think of was how disappointed his mother would be if she heard everything. If he told Benjamin what he thought about, he would call him mother's boy. But he didn't care. His mother was his best friend, and Edward was terrified of making her sad. His mother was everything to him, and her every word, and every thought was precious.  Plus, this camp was a golden ticket to figuring out how to make friends, but now, thanks to Benjamin, he had lost that opportunity, too.
Benjamin was honestly making him crazy. The way he talked, the way he acted, even the way he looked. They were so different from each other. He couldn't figure out if it intimidated him or annoyed him. They didn't have a single thing in common, not that Edward knew anything about Benjamin, but it still felt like they were complete opposites.
On the other side of the room, Benjamin was angry, annoyed, and anxious. And all those emotions were making him overwhelmed. First, he was angry, he didn't know if it was for himself or the boy across the room, but he was angry. He was annoyed because the reason he had gone to that camp in the first place was to have fun, but now Benjamin was stuck in the same room with the most terrible person he had ever met and was far from having fun. And he was anxious because all he could think about his father talking to the camp counselor and apologizing for the things he had done, more than once.
Benjamin could only imagine the look on his father's face. He would be so disappointed as if he weren't enough. His green eyes would pierce through his head, and he would lecture him until he apologized. Benjamin adored his father expect those times. They had a great relationship and a lot of common interests. Harry was a great dad, he was, but being a single father meant that he had to be both the bad and the good cop. And it was the hardest part.
Benjamin was so much like his mother, Harry didn't know how to tame him. Even though Benjamin looked exactly like his father, he was nothing like him. Every word, every gesture, every eye roll was like his mother, and it drove Harry crazy. But how much Edward was like Harry, drove Y\N crazy more. Not only with his long curly hair, green piercing eyes, and identical smile but also with his personality. Edward was everything Harry had ever been. Even the music he listened to reminded her of Harry.
It was disturbing how much they took after their parents, but both of them didn't know. Y\N sometimes thought what if Harry was the parent who raised Edward, not her. He loved music. Would he be more interested in singing, or would he still have social anxiety with Harry without all the paranoia Y\N had?
Questions made both Harry and Y\N wonder about things they could have had if they hadn't been stubborn. If Harry chased after Y\N, If Y\N stayed and talked instead of running away. Now, the only thing their children thought as moon lightened the room in their beds was, without knowing the other thought about the same thing too, if they hadn't been way more stubborn than their parents, would this feud could be a friendship.
Only if they knew how much time it took to build a fellowship.

Just getting this off my chest because this has been boiling up inside my head for a while. This will be a long one so don't bother to read it if u don't want to; this is legit just so I can get it off my chest.

Ok so
Some people that follow me here on tumblr know me from the BATIM Amino. I used to be very active there, even being one of the biggest content creators (I'm not saying that lightly I was literally on the Top 15 when it came to that weird reputation points system) . I recently left Amino as a whole because of something that happened there.
So the story goes like this: I was 13 when I started posting on Amino. Bendy and the Ink Machine Chapter 2 had just come out and I was drawing fanart of it. After a while I started talking more with other artists there, making ocs, just having fun. It went well for a few months until I met this person. For the sake of anonymity, I'll call them HWI (it was an acronym to their persona's name or something).
So I'd been checking out this HWI person for a while now. I really liked their art style and this specific character they had. They had this classy killer 1800s style and I'm an absolute sucker tor those. One day, I got the courage to message them with a small piece of fanart. They replied and liked it, and then the conversation went on.
We commented on each other's art, rp sometimes, we became really close. They later on introduced me to their other friends and we made a small group chat on Amino. We rpd a LOT to pass the time and just play with our characters. I remember staying up late just to talk to them about how my day went. I wasn't very social at the time and I had the bad habit of grabbing onto the first friend I could make like my life depended on it.
So 2018 came around. I was diagnosed with autism, at the time still called Asperger's Syndrome. All I knew was that I finally had a face to put on the problem of "being weird"; it wasn't a problem at all. It was different sure but I wasn't broken or less that anyone else. I didn't told anyone online about my diagnoses because well I was coming to terms with it myself first. This will come in hand later so stick with me.
With time I started realizing I had a favorite character of them that I just liked way way more than the others; that same oc I spoke about earlier. I had no fucking idea why I liked them so much it just??? it happened, and I believe HWI realized that.
We had these two ocs. One of them was mine and the other was their oc, and we kinda shipped them so we just made them a couple for the heck of it. I had lots of fun doing rps and fanart of those two but I never understood why. After a while, HWI started acting a bit weird. They did a total 180 on said character, randomly making them rude and unlikable. Now I know that it was just an rp and I shouldn't have taken it seriously, but it was bumming me out a little: the only place I had to vent out stuff and to take a break was now making me feel bad.
I was stupid by making those small moments the pillar of my self confidence. I was in a rough spot at the time and latched onto that group chat like it was the only good thing I had in life. I now know I shouldn't have done that.
I didn't had the guts to step up and tell HWI to at least don't be so rude so I kinda just took it. A few months went by and I finally had the courage to stand up against them. I had realized at the time that I was having a hyperfixation on said character and I told HWI to just not be that rude. They said they didn't meant it and told me they would stop. Except they didn't.
Then followed 3 years of having HWI dangle that character over my head like some treat for a dog. They'd threaten to stop using said character or to delete their stuff if I didn't behave in the way they wanted. If I had an opinion about something and they didn't liked it, they threatened me with that stuff. I now look back at it and realise "That was just some stupid random character why was I so scared and in panic?" But I was young, didn't had good role models and didn't knew better.
I moved to an arts school when I started 10th grade. There I met a lot of people who were like me; everyone had their very distinctive quirks and troubles they were coming to terms with, people were discovering themselves. Everyone was so different from each other, but everyone respected everyone and the whole school lived in harmony. I felt like I finally fitted in, I started making lots of friends and my life changed for the better.
In 11th grade, I finally told my friends about what had been happening for 3 years now. They knew about my previous problems at home and about my autism so they told me that they thought I'd been groomed by HWI. I didn't believed them at the time; HWI had been so nice to me and helped me through a lot in my life. Then I finally took a step back, and it hit me.
I never liked HWI. They were indeed very rude and manipulative, but they had something I loved so much that I'd become submissive to the point of believing that was normal, that it was the way to treat friends. They were 20 when I was 13. I thought it was ok at the time, until they started asking for fanart and favors in exchange for rp time, and pushing sexual rps onto me a lot. They would tell me that they were the only one who could understand me, that the rest of the world was just filled with evil corrupt people and I fucking believed in everything they said. They would bring down the mood of the whole chat with their negativity to the point other people started complaining about it. I remember having a breakdown mid-lunch break when it finally hit me. I'd been groomed.
But, thank goodness, this has a good ending. As I realized that I had to get out of this situation, I quickly came up with a plan. I had tried multiple times to go without said hyperfixation but I would always end up having panic attacks and just not feel well. So the plan was to try and get said character to my side and run off as quickly as I could. I knew they didn't liked the character at all and were just using it to control me so I knew I could do some kind of art trade with them and get the character. After a while of asking if I could have the character since they weren't using it anymore, they said they would give him to me in exchange of some fanart, demanding it to be very very good or either they would refuse to give the oc. I rushed to ibispaint, drew something I was dead sure they would like and sent it. And then it was done.
I stayed in the chat for some extra weeks as if trying to prove myself wrong; that HWI was a good person and this was all a big misunderstanding. But it wasn't. They continued being toxic and manipulative, but they didn't had anything to use against me now. I left the chat and a few months later the Amino as a whole.
So to anyone who finds themselves in a situation similar to this one, here's a piece if advice: get out of that shit as fast as you can. I know there are people who have it WAY worse than me, but I don't wish for anyone to go through something even remotely similar to what happened to me.
If you find yourself in a toxic relationship, get out of there as fast as you can. No matter how many lies they tell you, that no one else would love you or understand you, that only they can handle what you are; it's all bullshit. There are somany people out there who would protect you and fight for you with their life. Heck you find yourself with a toxic friend but are scared to leave them because they're your only friend? Hit me up! I'll gladly be your friend!
People deserve so much more than feeling like they're emotionally dependant on someone else. Self-love and self-worth were two of the best things that I learned to have since I left that toxic relationship, and everyone deserves to feel good and to be proud of themselves FOR themselves.
-
Wow this was... long XD so yeah. HWI is also on tumblr but don't go searching for them. I told them off and that's it. As the meme goes, the evil has been defeated XD I will be posting stuff with those two ocs since I'm kinda removing them from the BATIM fandom and making them kinda just their own thing. I still love them to pieces and want to draw them so so much!
So wow you've made it all the way down here? Have a snack you must be so tired 🍩🍪🍰🧁🥧🍫🍬🍭🧃

Slayers Secret Santa 2020 fanfic: Sisters
Hi, @sugar-stories! I was your @slayersweek secret santa this year, sorry for the lateness. I hope you’ll enjoy this little fic - community service did not quite make it, but I’ve tried to incorporate the other prompts to the best of my ability.
Sisters
“Gracia, wait!”
The tall girl in her mid-teens turned back, her long raven hair and priestess garb swaying around her.
The clothing and features of the child trying to catch up to her on the narrow forest path were undeniably similar to hers, but with her round blue eyes and startled expression she still had an air of innocence about her, suggesting an age barely over ten years at most.
“You’re so slow, Amelia!” the older girl spoke impatiently.
“But we shouldn’t stray this far from the camp!” The answer came in a pleading tone. “When they find out, everyone will be really angry!”
“Hahaha! They won’t find out if we’re quick enough – so hurry up! Breeze Town should be really close now.”
Despite her eagerness to rush ahead, Gracia did slow her pace down slightly. Amelia tried her best to catch up, but still looked quite a bit worried.
“Why are we going to Breeze Town?” she asked once she was close enough to tug at the other girl’s robes.
“Hihihi! Because, dear sister, while you were wasting time reading fairy tales in the Eternal Queen’s castle, I found out a huge secret!” Gracia replied, looking very proud of herself. “The Knight of Ceiphied, the strongest person in Zephilia, works at an inn there!”
That certainly piqued the younger girl’s interest a little. “A knight? Do you want to ask him to teach us how to fight evil?”
Her older sister sent a look of disgust her way. “What? No, of course not. I want to beat him up.”
“Eeeeh?! Why??” Amelia’s eyes grew larger than dinner plates. “Is he a villain…? I thought knights were allies of justice…”
Gracia turned her head away. “Who cares what he is. If I can defeat him, Father will have to accept that I’m strong enough to set out on my own.”
The little girl tugged at her sister’s robe once more with a pout. “Are you trying to run away again? In those weird clothes?”
No answer came. Gracia still refused to look her in the eye.
“They’ll drag you back again, you know. And Father will be really sad.”
The older girl raised her head high in defiance… then let out a yelp as she tripped over a thick wooden branch lying across the path. Unfortunately for her, they were going downhill on a moderately steep slope at this point, so not only did her face get closely acquainted with the muddy earth, but her momentum made her roll a good ten yards down the path, until she stopped at a spot where the autumn forest gave way to a large, lush meadow.
Once she caught up again, Amelia crouched down and touched her sister’s arm, lying in the dirt in an odd angle. Her expression was now more resigned than worried, like she was seeing such a scene for the umpteenth time.
“RECOVERY.” The healing spell flooded their surroundings with white light. “…Let’s just go back to the camp now, okay?”
“Huhu… ha… ha… Y-You think this was enough to hurt me? Haha, this… this is nothing,” Gracia muttered, wincing as she got off the ground.
“…Why are you doing that?” Amelia asked innocently.
“Hihihi, doing what?”
“That! That strange laugh! It sounds like… like someone is tickling you.”
Gracia seemed greatly offended by her remark. “No one is tickling me! It’s just… Mom always said that a confident laugh can strike fear into the hearts of your enemies, so…” She trailed off, then added in barely a whisper, “I’m still practicing, okay?”
Looking too embarrassed to continue, she instead took a few careful steps forward, let her gaze sweep through the scenery – and her face immediately lit up.
“There it is! The town!” She pointed towards the opposite edge of the meadow and broke into a run, injuries all but forgotten.
A road cut into the middle of the grassland, much wider and visibly more well-travelled than the path they had followed until now. One end disappeared among the forest trees, but the other indeed led to a couple of wooden cottages, with more buildings coming into view in the distance. In front of them, the words “Breeze Town” were carved into a short limestone obelisk.
“This looks like a pretty big place,” Amelia commented as they made their way into the settlement. “How will you find that knight person?”
Her sister grinned. “Haha! Everyone in Zephilia knows about the Knight of Ceiphied! We’ll just ask someone for directions… like that weird-looking commoner over there.”
About fifty yards ahead stood a larger two-storey building with a sign depicting a heavily stylized bovine udder. A young girl with chestnut brown hair paced back and forth in front of it restlessly; she was the same age as, or perhaps slightly older than Amelia, but it was very hard to tell for sure considering she was dressed in a cow costume from the neck down, complete with black hooves and a huge, pink-colored cotton udder hanging from her stomach.
Once she noticed the two sisters’ approach, the girl gave an exasperated sigh, and to their astonishment began a small sing-and-dance routine, making several pirouettes in front of the wooden structure, her udder flailing wildly about in the air.
I’m Cindy the cow, yes, that’s my name, They serve my milk here to great acclaim, You looking for wine? Hey, that’s no shame, Maggie’s Inn welcomes you all the same!
After going through the lyrics twice in a rather lifeless voice, the girl graciously whirled around on one leg – and started banging her head against the inn’s wall.
“I.. can’t… take… it… anymore!” she screeched.
The sisters simply stood there, rooted to the spot.
“Um…” Gracia began, but before she could say anything else, the cotton udder once again took a 180-degree turn in the air, its owner glaring daggers at her.
“Don’t. Ask,” she hissed threateningly.
“…Why are you dressed like that?”
“Aaargh! I told you not to ask!” The puffy forelegs of the costume tore into her shoulder-length hair. “It’s my punishment, alright?! Luna works as a waitress here and I thought people wouldn’t mind if her adorable little sis would snatch a cookie or two for free… But they’re a  bunch of penny-pinching pricks, and now I have to work in this… ridiculous getup to pay for them! Does that placate your curiosity, dear customer?!”
Amelia blinked in confusion. “But… why tell us if you don’t want people to know?”
“Because it’s part of my punishment, you numskull!” the girl roared, then reached into a small pocket on her costume and took out a piece of paper, irritably scanning its contents. “Now what else do I need to tell you? Ah, right: chocolate milkshakes are now fifty percent off, though it’s still daylight robbery if you ask me, there’s a special ‘buy one get one free’ offer on cookies, but don’t bother, I tried them and they’re horrible… oh, and the guards want people to stick to the forest when heading out of town, because the man-eating plasma dragon was spotted not far from here recently.”
“M-M-Man-eating plasma dragon??” Amelia blanched.
Her sister on the other hand merely gave a curious nod. “Hmm, now that you mention it, I remember Father and the Eternal Queen talking about something like that. The beast is hiding in the mountains near the capital and comes down here from time to time to eat people.”
“Eeeeeh?! We left our escort and came all the way here when you knew that evil dragon was around?!”
“Now don’t be scared,” Gracia lightly patted Amelia’s head, though she did not seem to appreciate the gesture. “If the beast turns up on our way back, it’ll serve as a nice cool-down exercise after my triumph over the Knight of Ceiphied. Muhuhuhu!”
The brown-haired girl in the cow costume, until now busy poking her ear in a display of utter boredom, suddenly perked up. “Wait, what? You want to beat up the Knight of Ceiphied…?”
“Yes, hahaha, that is exactly why we’re here,” the older girl nodded again with confidence.
“Uh-huh… Gotta ask: are you planning to do that before or after hell freezes over?”
Her good mood evaporating, Gracia folded her arms. “Hmph! I do not need to hear such insults from a common cookie thief who presently serves her well-deserved punishment. Good day!”
She was about to turn away, when the inn’s door opened a crack and a young waitress peeked out, gazing curiously at the sisters. She was around halfway between Gracia and Amelia in age, though her mannerisms and outfit made her look slightly more mature. Her dark bangs were long, both in the back and in front, to the extent that they nearly covered her eyes.
“Are these people leaving?” she asked with some disappointment, before turning her head to the side. “Hey ‘Cindy’, are you doing your job properly? You should be getting us customers, but it’s already half past ten and the inn’s almost empty.”
“C-Cut it out! I’m not Cindy!!” the girl in the cow costume wailed. She pointed at the pair in front of her in desperation. “How about you bully them for a change?  Hey, you two loons, she’s the one you were looking for, the ever-so-famous Knight of Ceiphied!”
Gracia and Amelia gawked at the waitress.
“She’s… Whaaat??” That was all the former managed to say.
“Are you… are you really the famous knight?” the younger girl asked with wonder.
The answer came in a wary voice. “…First of all, I’m Luna. Second, I don’t actually have an official title, but yes, people around here call me the Knight of Ceiphied. What business do you have with—?”
“The outrage!” Gracia cried out before she could finish, extending both hands in a theatrical gesture towards the girl in the cow costume. “How could a person as powerful as you put a lovely, innocent child like her through such undeserved hardship?!”
Amelia took a step back, perplexed. “Uh, but you just said—”
“Unforgivable!” Her protests were likewise ignored. “The heavens cry out for retribution, and I will see to it that justice is served! Now, heehihihee, prepare yourself, Knight of Ceiphied!” Gracia waved a hand in front of her. “FREEZE ARROW!”
An icicle the size of her outstretched arm appeared in the air and sped towards Luna.
“She’s totally nuts!” The chestnut-haired girl dove out of the way in a frenzy.
The waitress, on the other hand, did not try to evade – in fact, she looked almost relieved.
“Oh, so you’re one of those people.” She lazily held out her hand, and the moment it made contact, the icy projectile burst to pieces. “I was worried you’d try to recruit me for some world-saving quest or something.”
Amelia’s frantic gaze jumped from Luna to her sister and back. “Wait-wait-wait! You say she’s a villain, but… almost blowing up the inn out of the blue is also something a villain would do, you know…! What’s going on??”
“She’s got a point,” the waitress said, suddenly standing next to Gracia, with a hand on the other’s shoulder. “Let’s take this fight somewhere else.”
The tall girl huffed. “You think you can tell me what to do? I’m… uh…”
She looked around, disoriented. The two of them were no longer within Breeze Town, but stood alone amidst the vast meadow she had crossed earlier.
“Here’s how this is gonna be,” Luna stated matter-of-factly. “I’ll spare a minute to pummel you into the dirt, and in return you’re going to buy yourself a full-course meal at Maggie’s. Got it?”
Gracia tried to give the angry huff another go. “Like I said, you think you can tell me… what to… No way…”
The waitress now held a sack full of coins in her hand, and amused herself by repeatedly tossing it into the air. “I’ll hold onto this for you until then. Come on, give it your best shot!”
The older girl sent a scowl her way, then leapt back. “I’ll make you eat those words! DEMONA CRYSTAL!”
Dense, chilling fog hit the ground in front of her, creating a thick sheet of ice upon contact. The freezing cold spread out in a fan shape and quickly reached the spot where Luna stood – except she was no longer there.
“Aaaand you missed,” the waitress’ voice sounded from behind her.
Gracia turned around just enough to see Luna giving her a light push with her free hand – a light push which sent her a good twenty yards through the air, screaming all the way. Even after the unnerving sound of impact, the momentum made her roll another ten yards in the grass until she came to a stop.
“Don’t be too hard on yourself; this is how it always ends,” Luna commented as she walked closer. “One tap, one KO – end of story.”
The tall grass ahead of her stirred.
“I’m… not… done yet.” With great effort, Gracia managed to stand up. She was covered in bruises and her priestess outfit had gotten torn in a few places, but her injuries still looked unexpectedly minor considering her previous trip through the air.
For the first time, genuine surprise spread across the waitress’ features. “Wow… You’re a tough one, I’ll give you that.”
Her opponent managed a shaky grin. “Mwuhaha! I told you I’ll make you eat your words! And now…” She put a hand on the ground. “VU VRAIMER!”
The earth began to shake, then split apart and a twelve-foot-tall, roughly humanoid mass of soil and grass climbed out of the fissure.
“Golem! Attack!” Gracia commanded.
“Baa!” the magical construct responded in a deep voice, swung its mighty fist… and nearly flattened its creator.
“Wait! Not me! Not me!” said girl screamed, running as fast as she could towards Luna with the golem in dogged pursuit.
The waitress simply stood there, looking unsure what to do about the situation; thus she was caught entirely off guard when, the moment she passed by, her opponent held out a hand to her face.
“LIGHTING!” With its duration set to zero, the spell immediately extinguished itself in a brief, blinding flash. In the same instant, Gracia changed directions and cocked her fist. “I have you now! Pacifist Crush!”
Her blow was caught within the Knight of Ceiphied’s open palm.
“Do you know how many times my sister tried that tactic against me?” Luna flung her flailing opponent out of the way, then readied a strike of her own against the incoming golem. “Why do you think I let my bangs fall into my face?”
A second later, the animated mass of earth burst apart, pieces of soil raining down on the meadow everywhere.
Having flown only a couple of steps this time, Gracia quickly scrambled to her feet. With a stubborn smirk, she raised both hands into the air. “Is that so? Then it’s time for my most powerful spell! Prepare yourself!”
A sphere of blue light began to gather between her palms.
“Alright, bring it!” Luna answered with a smug smile of her own. “I’ll admit I’m starting to enjoy… this…”
Her words died away as her gaze rose upwards, drawn to the massive shadow that fell upon the two of them.
Thump.
“Mwahahaha! You’re scared now, aren’t you?” Gracia laughed, seemingly unaware of how the ground once again shook below her feet, much more violently this time – and not because of the spell she was trying to cast, either.
The waitress did in fact seem shaken, but for entirely different reasons. “No, forget about the fight! Look behind you and run!” she shouted.
“What a transparent ruse! I know you are only trying to distract me to— Kyaaa!!” Gracia let out a scream as what seemed to be a bolt of lightning sped by above her head, scattering her spell effortlessly. It hit the ground halfway between her and her opponent, resulting in a crater wide enough to easily swallow a cart.
A feral snarl came from behind her back. With shaky legs, the tall girl slowly turned around.
Towering over her was a dragon with scales of silver, claws of steel and eyes of liquid gold. Its head alone was twice her own size; electricity crackled within its mouth, ready to unleash another bolt of magical destruction.
Her entire body paralyzed by fear, Gracia could only watch helplessly as the beast’s claws swiped through the air in her direction.
The boulder-sized talon came to a halt less than a yard from her, held in place with a single hand by Luna, who appeared between them in the blink of an eye.
“Sorry pal, in our town there is no such thing as a free lunch,” the waitress sneered.
She then swatted the claws away like they were leaves in the wind, jumped forward and drove her first into the dragon’s stomach.
The beast roared, though more in anger than pain, it seemed: the punch shoved it back a good distance on the ground, but its shiny scales looked none worse for wear at the point of impact.
Seeing the ineffectiveness of her attack, Luna appeared annoyed herself – but her ire soon turned into bewilderment as the dragon’s growling voice began to form coherent words.
“You strong, human! But me still eat you soon!”
Gracia, who stood in the exact same position as before, seemingly petrified, finally forced out a gasp. “It… haha… it can talk…”
“Me talk!” the dragon replied in a lower, but still rumbling voice laced with pride. “Me siblings all dumb, but me strong and smart! Siblings stay on mountain, but me come down and find many tasty human! Me the best!”
“Oh, shut up,” Luna spat while jumping high into the air.
For a moment she was seemingly floating way above the huge beast, then she came down with a mighty punch to its skull, one she could put all her momentum behind.
As she touched down on the ground, the dragon’s head reeled to the side – but then righted itself once more, still no injury to be seen.
“You no hurt me!” With that cry, it sent another volley of lightning at the waitress.
Still unable to move, Gracia watched the magic beam tear into the grassy landscape – and the next thing she knew, she was at the edge of the meadow near the town entrance, with Luna standing next to her.
“Damn lizard’s right, I can’t bring it down like this. I need something I can use as a focus for my powers,” the waitress explained in a hurried tone. “Do you have a dagger, a sword or anything similar?”
“No,” Gracia responded immediately, looking inexplicably upset, as if the Knight of Ceiphied had just insulted her parents.
“Figures.” Luna glanced back at the dragon; the beast was already closing in on them, trampling through the tall grass, each step like the beating of a gigantic drum. “Okay, here’s the plan: run towards the town, keep that dumbass occupied for just a minute – I’ll be back as soon as I can.”
If the tall girl wanted to protest, she never got the chance: the waitress was gone from her sight in the next instant. She looked down at her trembling legs, as if hoping she could glare them into submission and get them to move.
Then her heart skipped a beat. From the corner of her eye, she noticed a crucial detail both her and the Knight of Ceiphied have missed until then.
Their fight had an audience.
“The evil monster is going to destroy the town! We must help!” Amelia jumped forth from behind the limestone obelisk, trying to strike a heroic pose while visibly fighting her own battle against fear.
“And help how?!” The girl in the cow costume appeared next to her, tearing at her chestnut hair. “Do you know a spell big enough? Because for me only one comes to mind, and I don’t think I can pull that off right now! Where the heck did Luna run off to??” She looked around, but the waitress was still nowhere to be seen. “Ugh… Fine, but don’t blame me if everything goes sideways! VAL FLARE!”
“No, w-wait…!” Gracia’s words of warning were drowned out by the roar of flames as a crimson projectile smashed against the fore legs of the approaching dragon.
Despite the huge explosion that followed, the spell did not even slow the beast down – but it was enough to make it change directions.
“Ha, human me tickle,” the plasma dragon growled with amusement as it trotted by the still-stupefied Gracia and stared the young spellcaster down. “Tickle give me appetite…”
In the same moment, Luna nearly tore the inn door off its hinges.
“The guards! Have any of you seen where they are??” she questioned the patrons within; the place was a lot more crowded now, many having fled inside when they saw the approaching beast. Most only stared at the waitress confused, while a few people shook their heads. “Great…Then do you have a sword, a dagger, or… anything with a pointy end? Come on!”
A wave of murmurs ran through the crowd.
“Maybe… you could ask the boss lady?” one of them pointed towards the counter; the innkeeper herself was currently missing from the room.
Luna sighed irritably. “No, Maggie doesn’t keep any weapons here. The place’s full of that fancy kitchenware collection of hers…” Her eyes bulged. “That’s it!!”
“Stay back, you vile monster!” Amelia’s mid-air kick collided with the wall of silver scales, but she bounced right off like she was trying to beat up a mountain. “Oooow!”
“Come any closer, and I’m lobbing a Fireball down your throat!” Drops of sweat rolled down the face of the girl in the cow costume, as the dragon slowly lowered its head towards her.
“Yes, human use more flashy light,” the rumbling voice almost purred like a cat. “Me like tickle when me eat… so… um…”
The beast pulled its head back slightly, suddenly looking uncertain.
“…What?” she blurted out.
A weird, disgusted frown appeared on the draconic visage. “No-no, me wrong. Tickle or no tickle, me no eat you. Look thin, short… nasty. Me get heartburn.”
“…Huh?! Why you little…!”
“Other human look more tasty.” A ball of fire crashed into the beast’s face, but it did not even notice as it turned its attention to Amelia, who lay in the grass clutching her sprained leg. It opened its gaping mouth, sparks of electricity dancing within. “Me have lunch now—”
“AQUA CREATE!”
“Graoaaaargh!!” A tormented roar could be heard as a heavy stream of water poured into the plasma dragon’s mouth and reacted with the energies of its primed breath weapon inside, sending waves of lightning through its entire body.
“Atrocious! Not only do you ignore me, but dare raise a hand against my sister?! I hope you’re prepared for what comes next!” Gracia yelled while sprinting closer. Her voice, now without an ounce of fear, was instead rife with anger.
The beast whirled around; stray arcs of electricity still occasionally ran through its eyes and nostrils, making its face twitch.
“You! Awful human!” it boomed. “You make me pretty tongue all hurt and numb! Me eat you first!”
Gracia merely put her hands on her hips. “Really, is that the best threat you can muster? If you wish to scare me, you still have some ways to go! Ha… Hahaha… Hahahaha…!”
The dragon looked outraged. “What…? No, me no joke! Me no funny! Me really eat you!”
“…Hehehehe… Hihihihihahaha…!”
“H-Hey…! Hey! Why you laugh?! Me scary! Me strong, scary dragon…! No laugh, human! You hurt me feeling!”
But Gracia kept on laughing and laughing, barely taking a second to breathe, as if her life depended on it – and perhaps it did.
“Hahahaha… Huhuhuhuhu….! Hahahahahohoho!”
She did not let up, and with every passing second, her voice became louder, sharper and stronger.
“Hohoho…!  OhOHohoHohO! OOOOHOHOHOHOHOHO!!”
That was the moment when the dragon started to back away.
“S-Stop! Me have good ear! Guh… You crazy! Me no eat crazy! Stooooop!!” It opened its mouth again to release another bolt of lightning, but only produced a shower of harmless sparks.
With no other option left, the beast turned around again in panic, trying to flee in the direction of the town – and immediately came face to face with the Knight of Ceiphied. She held something in her right hand: the largest kitchen knife she could find in the innkeeper’s collection.
“Hi.” Luna smiled. “Missed me?”
As she lunged forward, the blade of her weapon began to shine with brilliant white light; the knife pierced the silver scales like butter, all the way up to the handle.
“Me... no smart… after all…” the dragon groaned – and the surge of holy power burned it to ashes from the inside.
All could now breathe a sigh of relief… Well, if it were not for the insufferable laugh that still pierced the air.
“Oohohohoho! OOOOHOHOHOHOHO!”
Gracia stood there with her head held high, a reversed palm put in front of her mouth, oblivious to the world around her.
Wincing, Luna put her knife away and tried stopping her ears, but it seemed to make no difference whatsoever. “Ugh… What in the gods’ name is that horrible sound?”
“Someone… I’ll promise to be a good girl from now on… just make it stop!” the brown-haired girl writhed in agony on the ground next to her.
“No choice then, I’ll… have to knock her out,” the waitress spoke through gritted teeth. She took one shaky step forward, then immediately fell to her knees. “Crap! It’s somehow… making all my limbs go numb—!”
“SLEEPING!”
Finally, silence descended on the meadow. Gracia’s form slumped and she fell over – right into her sister’s arms.
“Please don’t be too angry when you wake up… You were so cool just now,” Amelia whispered in a tender voice while holding her in the princess carry pose, not looking the least bit overwhelmed. She then turned sheepishly towards the others. “Um, I’m sorry for… well, everything. But at least the evil dragon has been defeated, and we got to see that you really are no villain, Luna-san!”
The waitress gave her a weird look. “Uh… thanks?”
Amelia lowered her head in a polite bow. “It’s late, so we really need to go back now. But I hope the four of us can meet up later on and fight for justice together!” With an odd, exaggerated pirouette likely meant to look heroic, she whirled around, almost fell on her face, but righted herself at the last moment. “Take care until then, brave knight and… um, Cindy!”
The petite girl headed for the forest path with quick steps, Gracia still resting in her arms.
Only when she disappeared behind the trees did Luna speak up once more, as if she suddenly realized something. “Hey Lina, who were these people again? Did you catch their names? I actually never gave them their purse back.”
“Nope.” Her sister shrugged. “But I say if we never see them again, it’ll be too soon.” She put a finger to her chin, and added in a mischievous voice, “Still, what a lucky break for you, huh?”
Luna’s brows furrowed slightly. “Come again?”
“I mean, if that lunatic could still fight, she would have mopped the floor with you. Heheh, imagine everyone talking about how the great Knight of Ceiphied got her butt kicked by some crazy girl who laughed her into oblivion—” While looking like she was just getting started, Lina immediately shrunk back as she noticed her sister’s unamused stare. “Err… uh… I’ll be g-going back to dancing now, okay?”
She then quickly ran off towards the inn, her cotton udders swaying left and right.
To Gracia’s disappointment, that day did not go down in history as the moment when the Knight of Ceiphied suffered an ignominious defeat, but as the day when said knight slew a plasma dragon with nothing but a kitchen knife, making her fame soar to even greater heights.
Still, Gracia was sure, more than ever before, that things would not stay the way they were. She had grown and changed. They could not keep her at home for much longer: she would soon set out on a journey to see the world, practice magic and make a name for herself. Not by her ancestry, but by her own power.
Her own legend, that of Naga the Serpent, was only beginning…

Wallice has shared her subversive new single 'Hey Michael'. 'Hey Michael' amplifies her blood-thirsty nature, a revenge anthem that finds Wallice turning into a worse villain than her erstwhile love interest. A song about toxic tendencies and how they manifest in our lives, 'Hey Michael' twists and turns around American Psycho imagery. Wallice labels "a revenge anthem for anyone who has encountered a gaslighting, manipulative person. It’s what I wish I would have said to all the ‘Michael’s’ I have met in my life. It can be substituted by many names, we all know or have met a ‘Michael’ though. Somehow the world revolves around them and they just can’t catch a break, because they never do anything wrong and it’s usually your fault. You should have listened to your gut instinct and swiped left on this Michael. This isn’t a man-hating song, it’s just something many people can relate to. Sometimes it’s embarrassing to admit just how bad a friend, date, or romantic partner was and a lot of the time, I would just smile and laugh off stupid remarks but when I think back, I wish I had told them off. But at the same time, my persona in the song is not the best person either. I literally say: I think I want to start a fight, which one is your girlfriend? The whole song is funny because I am so focused on how shitty Michael is that I don’t even think about how shitty I might be as well." Directed by Phil Stillwell, the video takes place at a house party, with Wallice interacting with various 'Michaels' before her behaviour spirals into something much, much worse. [via Clash]

In the same vein as Massive Attack’s suburban groove and social commentary in the mid 90’s, KITA have captured the rhythm and heartbeat of suburban Pōneke; a city abuzz with a vibrant music and dramatic performance scene in their brand new track and official video, ‘Private Lives’. Weaving together elements of vintage rock, pop and soul, and warm hints of synth, KITA have created a skin-prickling piece of magic with ‘Private Lives’, a deeply beautiful track penned in 2020’s lockdown, that delves into the unknown of what happens when the blinds are shut – the parts of life that are unseen by others. "Standing from my kitchen window during lockdown in Aotearoa, sinister thoughts entered my mind about what could be happening behind closed doors for people”, says front-woman Nikita 雅涵 Tu- Bryant. The video tells the story of a father and daughter’s relationship amongst snapshots of everyday life and its monotonous anonymity, while things aren’t always what they appear on the surface. Late at night the father can finally reveal his true self, adorning makeup and sequins, only to be spied by his daughter. The two then share a special moment of dressing up and dancing together, a true celebration of individuality, self-love and the beauty of self-expression.

'Just Chemistry' is the third single from Dance Lessons, a London-based, female-fronted and produced trio, creating what they define as Serrated Pop. 'Just Chemistry' is a delicate hymn to the unspoken. Dance Lessons return with their signature sound – minimal production, sleek vocals and intricate arrangements. Ann says: “'Just Chemistry' is about the over-complication of our relationships. It’s about the things that are left unsaid in-between the awkward text messages and conversations, and how the absence of knowing can be misinterpreted as doubt. Last year was a difficult one. For a long time, I felt at the mercy of my emotions. I doubted where things were going. I lived in the future and found it hard to commit to the present. But these moments of not knowing can be equally thrilling and beautiful. And that’s what the song is about: finding beauty in the unspoken. In most cases, it’s chemistry that makes us fall in love. Things end, all is temporary. Let’s not go to war with one another over it.” Nat says on the video: “A friend told us about this weird and wonderful house in North London that feels a little like stepping into an acid trip. We obviously wanted to check it out. It’s completely surreal, all over the place (in a great way) and generally eclectic, which felt inherently us. We instantly wanted to do something there and asked the owner for permission to shoot a music video. We filmed during lockdown and were let loose embracing all the oddness of it. Ann also designed and created the outfit she wears in the video, something she does with most of her wardrobe. It was shot, directed and edited by our hugely talented friends Ben Hanson and Simon Frost from Borderland Studios.”

Returning with her first offering of the year, North London’s rising star Laurel Smith is ready to reveal her anticipated new single, ‘Out the Cage’ accompanied by an action packed and thrilling cinematic style music video directed by Jeremie Brivet and Jai Garcha. Sticking to her winning recipe of moody, dark, electro-pop production paired with effortlessly edgy tales of narrative lyricism, ‘Out the Cage’ is the next huge single from the young, innovative artist that is sure to follow the same trajectory of success as its predecessor, ‘Game Over’ released late last year. A songwriter and recording artist, Laurel Smith has been writing songs since the age of sixteen. With each single she’s released, Laurel has continued to adapt her sound and aesthetic, consistently honing her craft and evolving her brand. She has carefully carved out her place in an ever crowded industry and proceeds to turn heads at every corner. “‘Out The Cage’ is a song about breaking out from your constraints, both physical and mental. Although it can be interpreted in any way, when I wrote it I created a story around a bored housewife, falling out of love with her husband, she fantasises about tying him up and leaving him to be a badass assassin in a video game type world, roaming the city at night and living a life of unpredictability and excitement”.

Hailing from the Philippines, singer-songwriter Laica is coming off a breakout 2020. Now the 21-year-old is gearing up for the release of her debut album I’m so fine at being lonely. The first single off the project, 'love u lately' is here, accompanied by a music video directed by Cooper Leith. 'Love u lately' is a relatable and infectious track. The song revolves around dating, understanding mixed signals, and the confusion that surrounds that world. Lyrically, Laica walks us through her experiences here, voicing her thoughts and frustrations about someone who she just can't seem to read right. Production-wise, the track is carried by a pulsing synth and a groovy bass. Together, the track feels upbeat. The vibe created by the production stands in contrast with the more emotional lyrics, making the track complex and interesting. The music video takes the concept of 'love u lately' to the extreme, in a fun and playful way. Laica is seen capturing her dream boy and attempting to use witchcraft to finally win him over. The video has a very DIY feel, which could serve to add to the reliability of the track. It’s a great extension of the track and taps into everyone’s most fantasy-driven realities. [via Earmilk]

At first, Emily C Browning wasn't sure what to think. Spurned, rejected, and cast aside, she was angry, furious, and - at times - utterly bereft. Usually she'd utilise songwriting as a vessel for her emotions, but when she was so conflicted, and feeling so negative, that it just didn't enter her mind. The Christchurch, New Zealand artist needed to take a step back, and when she located some perspective, she was ready to act. New single 'I Wasn't Into You Anyway' is a soaring slice of revenge, one that finds Emily C Browning taking full control of her music. Her first solo production credit, its reminiscent of those surging, empowering Maggie Rogers bops, while also containing similar DNA to Sharon Van Etten's work. Lyrically, it's absolutely her own creation, with Emily leaning on those often-hidden feelings. She comments... "Everyday for a month I wrote in my journal: I want to write a song about feeling rejected. But I couldn’t figure out how to keep it light and funny, it can be quite a painful topic and I didn’t want to sound too heavy. But I kept working on it everyday and came up with this song. I then spent another month recording it, trying to capture a sound that stayed upbeat and playful. I put so much time and energy into the song that I ended up completely forgetting about the person who rejected me in the first place (honest, I swear)." [via Clash]

Alt-pop force Holly Humberstone returns with new single 'Haunted House'. The songwriter's potent debut EP Falling Asleep At The Wheel was a sensation, racking up more than 100 million global streams. A bona fide phenomenon, Holly returns with a single that displays a more nuanced, reflective side to her work. 'Haunted House' digs into childhood, and looks at the way memory can frame the way we construct our identities. She comments: "I wrote this song about the old and characterful house I grew up in. The house is such a huge part of who I am and our family. With my sisters and I moving out and living separate lives, coming home feels very comforting and one of the only things keeping us all connected." Playing with concrete imagery and no small degree of invention, 'Haunted House' connects art to life in an enchanting fashion. She adds: "The house is almost falling down around us now though, and we’ve realised that pretty soon we’ll be forced to leave. There’s a cellar full of meat hooks and a climate so damp mushrooms grow out of the walls. Loads of people have probably died here in the past but I’ve always felt really safe. It’s like a seventh family member. It’s part of me." [via Clash]

In 2019, the Boston-born and Brooklyn-based indie rock album Crumb released their debut album Jinx. Crumb haven’t yet announced plans to follow that album up, but they’re definitely working towards something. Last month, the band came out with a one-off single called 'Trophy.' Now, they’ve followed that one with two new tracks, and they’re both winners. The new songs 'BNR' and 'Balloon' both fit nicely into Crumb’s comfort zone. The band’s sound is a rich, sophisticated take on psychedelia, with blissed-out lead vocals from Lila Ramani and with some great funky drum action. The band co-produced both songs with Foxygen’s Jonathan Rado, who’s done great recent work with people like Father John Misty and Weyes Blood and the Killers and who knows how to make oblique ’70s-style pop sound good. But Crumb themselves deserve a ton of credit for coming up with a sound this layered and weird. They’re the rare circa-2021 band who might remind you of Broadcast. In a press release, Ramani says, “‘BNR’ is an ode to my favorite colors. I had a weird obsession with those colors in winter 2018-2019 and felt like they would follow me around everywhere I went." 'BNR' also has a cool music video. Director Joe Mischo starts the clip off as a hallucinatory reverie, but he turns it sharply towards horror at the end. [via Stereogum]

Last year, Limerick poet/musician Sinead O’Brien released her debut EP, Drowning In Blessings. It was a unique work, a handful of songs featuring O’Brien’s sing-speak over spindly, post-punk guitars. It garnered O’Brien a bit of buzz overseas, and it left you wondering where she might take her music from there. Now, O’Brien’s back with a new song called 'Kid Stuff.' “‘Kid Stuff’ shows up all different tones on different days,” O’Brien said in a statement. “There’s something alive in it which cannot be caught or told. It is direct but complex; it contains chapters. This feels like our purest and most succinct expression yet.” Like Drowning In Blessings, 'Kid Stuff' found O’Brien working with Speedy Wunderground mastermind Dan Carey. Musically, it hints at a level up moment for O’Brien. There was something alluring and jagged about Drowning In Blessings, but 'Kid Stuff' places her usual approach over a song that is surprisingly groovy — maybe even a little danceable. It comes with a video directed by Saskia Dixie. [via Stereogum]

Das Beat are made up of German actress and vocalist Eddie Rabenberger and Agor of Blue Hawaii. The pair have just shared their first single 'Bubble' online now and are set to release their debut EP Identität on June 4 via Arbutus Records. Born in Berlin during 2020’s legendary lockdown, Das Beat seeks to blast both boredom and boundary. Dabbling in German New Wave, Italo Disco, Indie & Dance, their sound is unified by vocals from Eddie Rabenberger, sung in German and English. Amidst playful lyrics one finds a strong underlying pulse (das “beat”), pinning down the duo’s meandering atmospherics, dreamy synths, guitars and percussion. The duo is half-Canadian and half-German. Agor (of Blue Hawaii), moved to Berlin from Montreal in 2018. Eddie is a theatre actress originally hailing from a small town in Bavaria. Together they find a strange but alluring symbiosis - like Giorgio Moroder meets Nico, or Gina X Performance meets The Prodigy.

St. Vincent has fully embraced the ’70s aesthetic for her retro-sounding new record, Daddy’s Home. Now, she’s diving headlong into the animation styles of the era with the video for 'The Melting of the Sun'. Presented as a “betamax deluxe release” rip from “Candy’s Music Video Archives,” the clip blends live action shots of St. Vincent herself with the wavy, intermittent animation frames any Schoolhouse Rock student is familiar with. The psychedelic lines fit a song called 'The Melting of the Sun' perfectly, as do the drawings of the legends mentioned in the song’s lyrics like Nina Simone, Joni Mitchell, and Tori Amos. St. Vincent co-directed the clip with Bill Benz, while Chris McD provided the animation. [via Consequence]

Bay Area slowcore trio Sour Widows have released a new single, 'Bathroom Stall,' from their forthcoming EP Crossing Over, which they announced last month with its title track. The song’s build-up is subtle and poignant like Sufjan Stevens, but Maia Sinaiko’s evocative, sweeping vocals are one-of-a-kind, and the lyrics are graphic and tragic: “Do you remember it like I do?/ Your lips turned blue I had my fingers in your mouth/ And I couldn’t get them out.” Sinaiko said of the song: "This song is about a relationship I had with someone who struggled with addiction, who very tragically passed away three years ago while we were together. It’s about some moments we shared, and how it feels to walk around carrying that person and those experiences with me while the world stays normal. I wrote the song because I wanted to preserve and document what happened to me. to write out the scary stuff and just let it sit there forever. I think its funny that its called 'Bathroom Stall' and that it has that image in it: the song goes from heavy and dark to ordinary and totally pedestrian in a sentence, which feels absurd. And that’s kind of what it’s like to grieve. That’s kind of what’s hard to explain about grief, how absurd it is. Part of you goes to a different planet and part of you stays walking around like an alien on Earth, going to the bathroom and looking at the moon and shit." [via Stereogum]

As JUNO-nominated singer Kandle Osborne prepares to launch her new project, Set The Fire this spring, she shares the album’s third single, 'Misty Morning.' From being penned on a napkin while abroad to a Vancouver studio, 'Misty Morning' is a sonic journey that echoes soulful vulnerability and an honest reflection of realizing true love. For the video, Kandle reconnects with 'Honey Trap' director, Brandon William Fletcher, to create classic 40s noir-inspired cine-magic, filmed along the Vancouver coastline and within the lush landscape of Stanley Park. Kandle says: “‘Misty Morning’ is my first real love song, captured on a napkin while in Ischia, Italy when I was truly happy. My songwriting usually comes from a place of turmoil and catharsis, but this was simply a snapshot of a perfect, vulnerable moment. In recording it, I wanted to hide behind lush orchestration, but my producer/ best friend Michael Rendall had other ideas. He wanted to strip it down to just piano & a single vocal to take me out of my comfort zone and re-capture the open-hearted feelings I had while writing it. The song and the recording both hold for me a time when I dropped my guard for pure authentic love in spite of all my flaws and failures. In that moment, I felt my true value as a whole person for the first time.”

On 'Vertigo,' Alice Merton’s first single of 2021, the 27-year-old describes the long road from uncertainty back to self-confidence. It emphasizes the unrest that seizes her again and again, the thought: “Why can’t I just let it go?” These contradicting thoughts and emotions that are so familiar to all of us sum up to an overwhelmingly positive effect - 'Vertigo' leaves you empowered rather than anxious: A powerful indie pop arrangement with distorted guitars, plus Alice Merton’s crystal-clear voice. The result is reminiscent of the British Invasion, with no air of self-doubt. With its energetic live qualities, 'Vertigo' feeds an appetite for summer festivals and concerts that will definitely return at some point. Largely responsible for this is the Canadian producer Koz, a multiple Grammy nominee, who has worked with Dua Lipa ('Physical') among others. Here, too, he adds on to what has already made Alice Merton stand out from the crowd in the past - her classic pop appeal - with an uncompromising and indie attitude. This enables Alice to take another big step: She equally encourages a shaken generation and herself that there will be easy summers again. That you can dance again and lie in each other's arms. That it is absolutely fine to have many facets, to not always be clear, and that strength and weakness are not mutually exclusive.

Canadian artist Olivia Lunny's new release 'Sad To See You Happy' is a shamelessly poppy track centering an acutely relatable break-up narrative. The Canadian artist follows up her breakthrough success with a bouncy cut to soundtrack 2021’s long-awaited spring. There's a relatable tale of break-up at the heart of the gloriously poppy new single, belied by percussive instrumentation that creates a warm, nostalgic feel. [via Line Of Best Fit]

After sharing the single last month, Charlotte Adigéry is now revealing the brand new video for ‘Bear With Me (and I’ll stand bare before you)’. The first new music since her 2019 debut EP Zandoli, Charlotte says of the video, “The video is about being confined thus confronted to the way we live. The cruel irony of having the privilege of standing still, questioning and observing my life in all safety while others are fighting for theirs. On the other hand, the video is about trying to stay sane while feeling that the walls are closing in on you. Embracing boredom and finding joy in the little things in life.” Director Alice Kunisue adds, “When I listened to Charlotte’s song and what it meant for her and Bolis, I wanted the video to visually encapsulate that feeling of being stuck inside and confronted to our deeper selves while paradoxically sensing the chaos going on in the outside world without being able to do anything about it. Choosing to film an apartment room from one single angle was a way to reflect that narrowness of thought that we all experienced, but also a constraint that allowed us to explore and develop visual ideas within a narrow system, in a way having to think only inside the box, which artistically was a fun challenge.” [via DIY]

Millie Turner has shared a video for ‘Concrete Tragedy’. It’s a cut from her upcoming mini-album Eye Of The Storm, set for release on May 16, which also features a rework of breakout song ‘(Breathe) Underwater’. “This video is a visual representation of dancing on your own,” she says of the clip. “Combining the many parts of who we are when we’re by ourselves, I wanted it to feel like you’re entering a world of imagination that comes alive when we express ourselves.” [via Dork]

Doja Cat and SZA have come together for a new single called 'Kiss Me More.' When the song was announced Wednesday night, the internet flipped out, which is to be expected with these two — especially Doja Cat, who is regularly going viral these days for all kinds of reasons. When it comes to collaborations, she always finds the best people. That includes Saweetie, who appeared on Doja’s recent 'Best Friend' but then claimed that it was released against her wishes. Given SZA’s long history of public frustration over TDE Records holding back her new album, she is probably happy to have any new music out. Despite recent single 'Good Days' hitting the top 10, her restless fanbase is still awaiting a follow-up to 2017’s iconic Ctrl. 'Kiss Me More' is the first single from Doja’s new album Planet Her, scheduled for release this summer. It returns to the disco vibes of Doja’s #1 hit 'Say So,' this time with no apparent resemblance to any Skylar Spence song. [via Stereogum]

Pick 10 ships without reading the questions.
Aethelflaed/Aldhelm (The Last Kingdom)
Michael/Thomas (Man in an Orange Shirt)
Harry/Ruth (Spooks)
Alfred/Drummond (Victoria)
Florence/Siobhan (Death in Paradise)
Leofric/Uhtred (The Last Kingdom)
Doctor/Rose (Doctor Who)
Feron/Marcheaux (The Musketeers)
Molesley/Baxter (Downton Abbey)
Jocelyn/Maggie (Broadchurch)
Questions!
1. Do you remember the episode/scene/chapter that you first started shipping 6?
It definitely came on gradually and happened like five years ago now, but I think the moment my heart was officially sold to them was their first scene in episode 5, the moment after Leofric removes his sword from Uhtred’s neck and they laugh and hug with relief at seeing each other again.
2. Have you ever read a fanfiction about 2?
MIAOS is one of the smallest fandoms I’m in, so there isn’t much fic out there, but I have written my own! Dear Darling took me over a year to write, but I knew I had to give Michael and Thomas their happy ending!
3. Has a picture of 4 ever been your screen saver/profile picture/tumblr?
Unfortunately not! I wrote enough fics for Alfred/Drummond in the short space of time they were together though.
4. If 7 were to suddenly break-up today, what would your reaction be?
Doomsday is the worst thing I’ve ever watched in my life, I still bawl my eyes out to this day. So yeah, I think it’s fair to say that I can’t handle Doctor/Rose splitting up.
5. Why is 1 so important?
Gahhhh OKAY WELL, without turning this into a massive emotional essay, let’s just say that Aethelflaed deserves a kind and gentle love, and after my poor darling Erik died in s2, her relationship with Aldhelm in s3 made me realise that she could have that love again. Although they aren’t together romantically at the moment (though fingers crossed for s5!), their loyalty, trust and respect is so wonderful, and their lil moments of flirting make my life.
6. Is 9 a funny ship or a serious ship?
Although Molesley was essentially the comic relief character in earlier series’ (and in the movie, which I’m still conflicted about), the moment Baxter arrived in the show we really saw a deeper side to his character. Their relationship is built on supporting each other and is truly beautiful, even without the romantic element.
7. Out of all of the ships listed, which ship has the most chemistry?
Harry and Ruth’s entire relationship was pretty much built solely on chemistry and connection, cause lord knows they weren’t allowed to have anything else.
8. Out of all of your ships listed, which ship has the strongest bond?
I’d have to say Michael/Thomas, cause their love story lasted over a decade and beyond, and I will never ever be over them.
9. How many times have you read/watched 8’s fandom?
Nearly twice lol, for some reason we abandoned our rewatch of The Musketeers mid-way through s2 last time, but we’re planning on rewatching again soon.
10. Which ship has lasted the longest?
I’ve shipped Doctor/Rose for the longest time, it’s been, what, fifteen years? I was about ten when I watched it, so...
11. How many times, if ever, has 2 broken up?
Michael and Thomas never really broke up in the sense that neither of them ever stopped loving each other, though they were forced to part three times (and admittedly, one of these kinda counts most as a break up).
12. If the world was suddenly thrust into a zombie apocalypse, which ship would make it out alive, 2 or 8?
Michael and Thomas were admittedly in a war and both have unbelievable and admirable reserves of strength. If they were in hiding during this apocalypse, they’d be good. In terms of fighting, Marcheaux could single-handedly take the zombies on and would do to protect Feron. I don’t really know how you’re supposed to handle a zombie apocalypse lol.
13. Did 5 ever have to hide their relationship for any reason?
Florence and Siobhan were never canon (bc the writers are cowards) but no they would never have had to hide their relationship, their family and friends would have been so supportive!
14. Is 4 still together?
No, Alfred/Drummond are not still together, thanks to history and Daisy Goodwin.
15. Is 3 canon?
WELL, how to answer this one?! Harry and Ruth technically went for one date, then she had to leave the country for like three years and stopped Harry from confessing his love. On her return, he proposed practically out of the blue and she turned him down but they still loved each other, and THEN SHE DIED. So, they never actually said they loved each other, they were never a couple, and yet they are canon. Does that make sense?
16. If all 10 ships were put into a couple’s Hunger Games, which couple would win?
Leofric/Uhtred, definitely! I love battle couples so much, and these warriors are the best (also Leofric isn’t dead so it totally holds)!
17. Has anybody ever tried to sabotage 10’s ship?
Yes, Jocelyn herself. From what we know of their backstory, she stepped away from any relationship they could have had, and only when they meet again many long years later does she finally confess that she’s loved Maggie all this time.
18. Which ship would you defend to the death and beyond?
Leofric/Uhtred, mainly because I once received a comment on one of my fics for them that literally just said “Uhtred isn’t gay. Sorry.”
19. Do you spend hours a day going through 1’s tumblr page?
There’s not enough there to spend hours in their tag lol, but I do check Aethelflaed and Aldhelm’s tag every day to see if my friend’s posted any new gifsets ahahaha, there’s pretty much only content from me and her in there atm!
20. If an evil witch descended from the sky and told you that you had to pick one of the ten ships to break up forever or else she’d break them all forever, which ship would you sink?
I mean technically Florence/Siobhan isn’t canon, and Death in Paradise already sunk any chance of it happening, so...
