Name: Magdela Ainsley. Usually known as Mags.
Gender/Pronouns: Cis woman, she/her.
Class/Specialisation/Skills: Dual-wielding rogue. Technically a ranger but in actuality she just owns a pet bear. Mags’ main Thing is being good at trap-making.
Race: Human
Nationality/Hometown: Fereldan, from a farm in the northwest of the Hinterlands.
Age/Birthday: Born August 9:06 Dragon, and 23 during Origins
Religion: Grew up Andrastian, without really thinking about it. Still Andrastian, but more aware of other religions now and trying to learn more about the Creators so she can teach her daughter about them.
Sexuality: Bisexual.
Love Interests: Zevran. They get together half way through Origins after an awkward conversation about thinking they’re not good enough for each other, and are married just after Awakening. She’s also had a Celebrity Crush on Anora since she was a teenager, and gets very awkward when she actually meets her.
Family: The family from Kajana’s Human Commoner Origin mod. Parents Torrence and Nansie, older sister Mairi and younger brother Bhradan. Mags is very close to her siblings, who’ve spent a lot of time reassuring her through insecurities and anxiety attacks. During Awakening, Mags and Zevran’s daughter Issella is born.
Friends:  Mags is friends with all of her companions in both Origins and Awakening, except for Sten, whose opinion of her is that she is, impressively, not quite as useless as he first imagined. Other than Zevran and her sister Mairi, Mags’ closest friends are Alistair, Leliana and Oghren.
Enemies: Mags doesn’t really have any personal enemies in Origins (she dislikes Loghain, but he’s more Alistair’s enemy), mostly because she’s worried that maybe she’s wrong about everything, and everyone else is right?? In Awakening, she quickly makes a lot of enemies because a lot of people want to kill or kidnap her daughter. With all the individuals who wanted to hurt Issella either dead or having apologised, Mags’ enemies are now just the Chantry, the Wardens and the Crows as a whole.
Pets: Her bear Moira, and the mabari, who Mags named Calenhad. She’s incredibly proud to have a mabari imprint on her.
Backstory (Out of Universe): I created Mags because I needed to see a hero was like me - someone who’d be pushed into an adventure and then immediately have an anxiety attack. Someone who, sure, might develop a little bit more confidence over the course of their story, but would remain anxious and fairly dependent and very much Not a leader, but who was allowed to be a hero anyway.
Backstory (In Universe): Mags had a fairly mundane life before the Blight, working on her family’s farm and regularly visiting friends in the local village. The most interesting thing that happened was when one of her traps killed a black bear. Mags discovered the bear had a cub, and adopted her due to guilt over killing her mother.
Biography/Game Decisions: Mags generally tried to help people, but also deferred to other people whenever she could. She dealt with Connor by going to the Circle, at Alistair’s suggestion, where she at first agreed to help Greagoir clean the tower of demons, since he said there was no way anyone could have survived. After meeting Wynne and discovering this wasn’t true, she tried to save as many mages as she could.
When Sten attacked at Haven, Mags didn’t fight back and told him he was welcome to take control if he wanted. Sten declared the party were going to Orzammar, to find the Archdemon in the Deep Roads, but other than Shale, the party refused to follow because they wanted to find the Ashes, liked Mags more than Sten, or just thought the whole idea was silly. Sten and Shale left the party to travel to Orzammar, where they were refused entrance because the king was dead and they didn’t have any Grey Warden treaties.
Shale helped find Sten’s sword while Mags found the Ashes, killing the cultists because destroying the Ashes would be blasphemy. They reunited outside Orzammar, were Shale and Sten rejoined the party. Mags tried to stay neutral to Orzammar’s political issues, but as it became clear that she needed to help choose a king, she sided with Harrowmont, since at least he didn’t want her to do something illegal, and Alistair agreed that he seemed nicer. She sided with Caridin over Branka, because seriously Branka, what the fuck. In the Brecilian Forest, she cured the werewolfs and brokered peace between them and the Dalish, on the advice of her party.
Mags never hardened Alistair, and they were both very happy to let Anora be queen. While Mags wouldn’t have objected to making Loghain a Warden, and wanted him to live for Anora’s sake, she left the decision to Alistair, who killed him.
Mags didn’t want to pressure Alistair to do Morrigan’s ritual, but was also unwilling to let him die fighting the Archdemon, and was able to throw grease traps at his feet if it looked like he was about to make the final blow. Which, since I didn’t want the story to end with Mags’ death, meant that soon after her miraculous survival killing the Archdemon, she discovered she was pregnant.
Between Origins and Awakening, she went back to her parents’ farm with Zevran and wrote to the Wardens asking if they had any advice about having a baby with the soul of an Old God, and whether the darkspawn would be after her kid?? The Wardens responded by sending Orlesian Warden-Constable Palorn Kader to help Mags manage Amaranthine, with orders to get the baby off her, bring it to Weisshaupt for study and kill it if deemed necessary.
With Mags being heavily pregnant, Palorn handled Awakening’s main questline. Meanwhile, Mags held court for the arling and tried to deal with Bann Esmerelle’s conspiracy. Esmerelle was assisted by a Crow named Veni Arainai, sent to Ferelden to kill Zevran, who suggested waiting for the baby to be born, then kidnapping her and holding her hostage to make Zevran and Mags surrender. Eventually, Palorn and Veni both decided that kidnapping babies is maybe bad actually and also their organisations suck, so they apologised and long story short, they all become friends. Mags’ daughter Issella was born a couple of weeks before the Darkspawn attacks on Amaranthine and Vigil’s Keep.
At the end of Awakening, Mags defended the Keep after Palorn and most of the other Wardens left for Amaranthine. They met up in the Dragonbone Wastes and came to a group decision to spare the Architect, provided he stayed away from Mags’ child and made reparations to the Dalish for killing Velanna’s clan.
Worried that it wouldn’t be long before they and their daughter were threatened by other groups of Wardens, Crows or Darkspawn, Mags and Zevran left Ferelden with Issella soon after the end of Awakening, only staying around to get married, and for Mags’ family to meet Issella. Wanting to know about Issella’s abilities and unable to contact Morrigan, they went to the Tellari Swamps to seek out the witch of the wilds rumoured to live there. They were accompanied by Anders and Veni, who wanted to join the running away plan to escape from templars and Crows.
Mags, Zevran, Issella and Calenhad are currently living in the Tellari Swamp, where Yavanna is teaching Issella magic, and how cool dragons are. Mags and Zevran occasionally leave the Swamps to visit towns outside, and they’re sometimes visited by Veni and several other former Crows, but they so far remain hidden from the many people who might harm Issella.
Personality: Mags’ biggest trait is her insecurity, but as time goes on she becomes more willing to stand up for her beliefs and tries her best to do what she believes is fair and right. As Arlessa of Amaranthine, she puts a lot of effort into protecting farmlands and villages, relating a lot to the difficulties faced by Freemen outside of cities. She also does her best to learn about different cultures and beliefs, beyond the homogeneous Andrastian society she grew up in, particularly after discovering she’s going to have a half-elven child. While she’s socially awkward, she will chatter on endlessly once she’s comfortable with someone. Mags is a proud Fereldan, with a great respect for Ferelden folktails, the Theirin bloodline, and most importantly dogs.
Appearance: Mags is tall, skinny and gangly. She’s covered in freckles.

Hi! Um, odd question to spring on you out of the blue, but if all your Wardens got together in a pub somewhere, how would they all get on?
Griffon, Mahariel and Orlena are Too Autistic for this shit and find a quiet corner to escape to. They end up having a good conversation about the stress of the Blight and of other people’s expectations and Griffon ends up asking Mahariel and Orlena some stuff about Daish and Circle culture they want to know but have been awkward asking about. In return, Mahariel asks Griffon about some noble stuff he doesn’t get. Griffon doesn’t get it either. Neither does Orlena. They complain about nobles.
Meanwhile Lorrel is adopting Everyone, whether they like it or not. Vari likes it a lot because this is essentially her grandmother and she’s really cool, and Seren’s really excited about having a city elf declare that she’s family now. She wants to know Everything about life in an alienage, which Vari and Lorrel kind of agree is “it sucks but also we’re the Greatest, and will fight anyone else who says it sucks.”
Elora tells Lorrel she doesn’t need or want a grandmother, or any family. In between mocking her little brother Thosk for all his shitty life choices. Which Thosk takes, because okay fair he has made some really shitty life choices. But some of the rest of you must have made shitty choices too right??? Isaline agrees that yes, she did. She’s not going to go into it. Mags says she did everything wrong, which Isaline and Lorrel tell her they’re sure isn’t true. Mihren says humans deserve what they get. Lacha isn’t comparing her mistakes to some fucking dwarven noble’s, and would prefer not to speak to Elora or Thosk at all actually.
Annabeth is…… not going to be doing at all well considering she did a lot of Terrible Things in the pursuit of stopping the Blight Whatever The Cost, at the knowledge that 13 other people were able to stop the Blight without being fucking terrible about it. But if we’re being nice, we can have pre-dead family and Blight Annabeth, who is incredibly down to party and hang out with all this fun new people and hey do any of them want to make out maybe?? Therlia has no objections to that.
Mags is very shy and awkward, and Lacha, who doesn’t want to be here at all and sees no reason to hang out with these people, sighs and starts talking to her. She tells Mags a lot of stuff about her life and her own feelings on leadership and People, and ends up giving Mags some blunt but very helpful advice. Mags isn’t sure whether or not Lacha likes her at all (she does).
Therlia, Isaline and Mihren end up having a very deep discussion about how terrible Circles are and the stuff they suffered there. Seren tells them her girlfriend was made Tranquil but would prefer to go back to talking to her City Elf friends instead of saying more about it. After a while of just talking about her abusive templar ex, Isaline lets slip his name. Therlia and Mihren are very quick to agree that yeah, Cullen Rutherford is the fucking worst. Seren looks back over and vehemently agrees. Orlena approaches the main table for the first time that night to tell everyone that yeah that guy’s a massive creep. No one else likes him either.
So tl;dr there are some disagreements and then everyone bands together to talk about how much they hate cullen rutherford

hey I don’t think I’ve ever told you guys about how quickly my zevmancing wardens fuck zev decides on whether they’re autistic or allistic
see after making my first six zevmancing wardens, I realised that the three autistics jumped his bones after a quest or two, while the three allistics went incredibly slow burn and didn’t fuck him until completing the five Gathering Allies quests at least. Which, considering the desexulisation of autistics, makes me really happy?
and now i just?? keep with it.
“Hmmm I don’t think Thosk will fuck him for a while and he seems to be allistic, so yeah, let’s drag this out.”
“Mags is a shy virgin who’s a little Nervous about having sex for the first time, I’m not sure how nervous though. Well, she seems to be allistic, guess we’re going for very nervous!”
“I think my planned Surana will fuck Zev fairly quickly, yeah, I guess she works pretty well as autistic!”
it is the best way of working out whether someone is autistic or not!
and i mean obviously, there was also the time my doctor just sent Zevran into the room and noted down how quickly I started screwing him. and that is how i got my autism diagnosis.

What were your various Wardens' decisions when it came to softening/hardening their companions?
I’m never really sure what to do with softening/hardening because like in theory, it’s good, it’s getting Alistair to stand up for himself more and telling Leliana she shouldn’t hate who she is but in game it’s just the warden picking a kind of mean line and then bam they are Harder now. For all my problems with Inquisition, I do prefer the softening/hardening mechanic for Leliana a lot there.
So for the most part in the game I tend to end up ignoring getting into softening/hardening and just harden Alistair if I want him to be king, and don’t harden Leliana because she ends up hardened anyway so there’s not much point in just picking a mean sounding dialogue option.
With a lot of Wardens I do kind of headcanon that they tell Alistair something like “I’m sorry, but look you have other people who care about you” immediately after meeting Goldanna and then in various other situations sit him down and encourage him to stand up for himself more and reassuring him that he’d be better at stuff than he thinks.
With Leliana, I kind of feel it’s harder to have separate conversations to harden her and you do kind of have to have the “it’s okay that you enjoy fighting and killing people” conversation which most of my Wardens don’t really think to do. Leliana is a good person, so they tell her so, and will continue to reassure her of that if she needs and that’s it.
I think it’s actually only Lacha who hardens Leliana. Mihren probably would have if she hadn’t like, poisoned the Sacred Ashes and then had to kill Leliana. But Lacha has Issues with “if you do bad stuff you’re a Terrible Person Forever” having spent years working for the Carta so that she and her sister wouldn’t die. She also kind of believes you sometimes need to be Hard to survive. She also hardens Alistair, because she’s very cynical and hey, everyone is out for themselves Alistair. People suck, don’t let them take advantage of you.
Most of my Wardens do the later encouraging Alistair to stand up for himself hardening. I think the only ones who don’t are Isaline, Griffon, Mags, Mihren and possibly Therlia. Mags and Isaline are very bad at standing up for themselves and kind of need to learn to do it themselves before they can encourage Alistair to, but they’re also both very unhappy with the idea of forcing him to be king when he’s always said being king wasn’t his idea and he’d rather stay a Warden.
Mihren and Alistair don’t get along until almost the very end of the game so he doesn’t actually meet Goldanna until the point when Mihren is being asked to choose a ruler and why would she make this guy king when he keeps saying what a bad ruler he’d be? I think it’s actually Wynne who visits Goldanna with him, he and Mihren may be getting along better but she’s still a bit of a dick. Wynne might harden him a bit, but again, this is right at the end of the game.
Griffon doesn’t harden him because a big plot of their game is Eamon trying to force Griffon and Alistair into being rulers when they don’t want to be. So they just tell Alistair that yeah they’re both going to be shitty rulers and it would be way better to stay Grey Wardens but they should try and trust Eamon. Until Alistair wrecks Eamon’s plans by like. doing the Ultimate Sacrifice.
Therlia was my first Warden and basically just hardened Alistair because I was told “hey this dialogue option may sound mean but if you’re romancing Alistair, things will go better later if you pick it, you should do that”. And then I ended up with Alistair doing the Ultimate Sacrifice anyway so I’ve been wavering a bit about whether to keep it, since whoever Therlia decides should rule at the Landsmeet and whether or not Alistair dumps her isn’t actually going to Matter for very long. I think she probably still would harden him?? But I should replay her sometime and see how I feel then.
