I know I’m like a week late for Valentine’s Day but I wanted to draw some fluffy stuff with Xiahou Dun and Wang Yi b/c I can :).
Also completely unrelated, but they’re stationed in Japan which is why they’re going to tabehodai and nomihodai lol

Its SO entertaining to watch cao cao inciting all those proxy wars and sowing discord within enemy ranks. “I’m gonna promote liu bei and then order him to attack lu bu, if he refuses i can charge him with treason, if he obeys then my two main competitors will be at each other’s throats and i can pick off the loser at leisure.” He came out of his disastrous lu bu era after red cliffs SWINGING. “let me have a suspiciously long and innocuous chat with ma chao’s advisor and then send him the world’s most suspicious secret message that is actually just a random letter with a few words blotted out.” You cannot get this kind of 5d mental chess anywhere else.

Do you think Ma Chao saw himself more of a Qiang person than a Han Chinese?
Of his ancestry, a Diǎnlüè 典略 passage in SGZ 36.3 says:
[Mǎ] Téng appellation Shòuchéng, was Mǎ Yuán’s descendant. In Huán-dì’s time, his father appellation Zǐshuò, once was Tiānshuǐ’s Lángān Commandant. Later he lost his office, and therefore remained in Lǒngxī, and with the Qiāng mingled and lived. His family was poor and without wife, and therefore he took as wife a Qiāng girl, who begat [Mǎ] Téng.
This would make Ma Chao's grandmother a Qiang woman. How much of a role that played in his self identity, I could not guess.

One of the funniest things about Ma Chao and Ma Dai is that their surname, 馬, literally means horse. Just. 'Horse'. I feel like there absolutely has to be jokes about that somewhere because if there's anything the Chinese love, it's puns and wordplay. I know it's not uncommon for him to be portrayed riding a horse, but that's the same for a lot of military figures in this era. I think I also vaguely remember something about his family or province or whatever being known for their horses?
In a similar vein, Lu Xun, Lu Su, and Lü Meng's surnames are all different Lu's. They're written as 陸, 魯, and 呂 respectively. Lü Meng has the same surname as the infamous Lü Bu, both written as 呂. Listen, Chinese has a lot of homophones and not a whole lot of surnames, stuff like this happens frequently.
So if you ever wondered if all of Wu's Lu strategists are related, no, at least not closely. But making that assumption wouldn't be off base since it was fairly common for huge nerds-I mean, strategists, to have other strategist relatives though, between people like the Zhuges and the Xuns as the best known examples. And of course a lot of people tend to not write or type the umlaut in Lü, partially because it's a pain to type on a lot of traditional keyboards, but also most English speakers don't recognize the difference anyway since English doesn't use umlauts.

Comprehensive Biography of Yang Qiu
Yang Qiu (楊秋), was a minor warlord based around Anding Commandery. He was initially affiliated with Ma Chao's rebellion, but then surrendered to Cao Cao. He would remain loyal to Wei.
Ma Chao
In the early years of the Jian'an era, Yang Qiu was on somewhat good terms with Cao Cao, sending an envoy, Kong Gui, to him every once in a while, presumably to acknowledge his authority.[1] However, in Spring 211, Cao Cao sent Zhong Yao to attack Zhang Lu at Hanzhong. Yang Qiu was concerned about them attacking himself, and Ma Chao only enflamed those fears. Soon, they, alongside many others, formed a coalition against Cao Cao and rebelled, choosing to station their troops at Tong Pass. In response, Cao Cao sent Cao Ren to attack them.[2]
Surrender
In Autumn 211, Cao Cao defeated the combined force, forcing Yang Qiu to flee back to Anding. In Winter 211, Cao Cao and his forces went north from Chang'an to siege Yang Qiu, being joined by Xiahou Yuan and Zhang He.[3][4][5] He soon surrendered. He was allowed to retain his previous peerage (which is unknown), as well as remain in Anding in order for him to call upon its people to support Cao Cao.[3]
Serving Wei
During Cao Pi's reign, he became General who Suppresses Bandits and was enfeoffed as Marquis of Linjing.[3] Around Summer 221, he, Guo Huai, and Zhang He would defeat Zheng Gan as well as some rebelling Lushui barbarians. Zheng Gan would surrender.[6][7]
Yang Qiu later died of old age.[3]
