“Oh, Merlin, tell me, does THE CELEBRITY get what she deserves?” She is NEUTRAL & OPEN to finding out.“
— she walks through the world as ;
name → andressa parkinson pronouns → she/her identification → cis-female year of birth → september 1955 - september 1956 face claim → camilla mendez blood status → pure-blood sexual orientation → up to applicant occupation → owner of the grave affair in knockturn alley, model for witch weekly future information → aunt of pansy parkinson
— she is best described as ;
The textbook definition of GLAMOUR & INTELLIGENCE, she is the pale FEATHER DRESS or the GLITTERING SEQUIN GOWN that passes you at a PARTY, with a GRACIOUS SMILE and POLITE GLOVED HAND. She is the scent of SPARKLING CHAMPAGNE & and the JOYOUS LAUGH echoed when the bottle is popped. She is sheer CELEBRITY, UNASSUMING, POLISHED & WATCHING those who WATCH her CLOSELY.
— her story starts with ;
tw: death
Raised in the knowledge the best people in life may be for free but everything else is paid for in cold hard galleons, Andressa Parkinson is rich beyond all belief and it’s hard not to notice. The eldest of twins, Andressa and her brother CRISTIANO PARKINSON [sibling] are always the first to make a best dressed list and at any party or trip to the bar it’s clear that when it comes to them money is no object. Andressa assumed creative control of her relationship with her brother at an early age, politely instructing him he must learn to lead her in a waltz and always be impeccably dressed for unsuspecting callers. The two had always felt much older than children their age, an inseparable pair of adults already readied for society before they’d even began at Hogwarts. The Parkinson family prided themselves on their clean and traceable bloodline which was detailed on the walls of their private family room, privy only to members of the Parkinson bloodline and those who were lucky enough to marry into it. Despite not being the oldest family in WIzarding Britain, they prided themselves on being the most culturally educated as well as the wealthiest and were known for their impeccable balls that risked scandal and ruin if you were not provided with an invitation.
Her parents provided an interesting model for herself and her brother. Though from the old world they were decidedly modern in their approach to being a leading societal family Antonia Parkinson was careful to invite those outside of her select social circle to her gatherings, including up and coming pure-blood families like the Siminovas to her balls, which raised eyebrows from the likes of DRUELLA BLACK [acquaintance]. Antonia knew that in a circle as small as The Sacred Twenty-Eight fresh blood was the best way to survive and that above all else there was nothing worse than irrelevancy and inviting outsiders to worship you was the best way of ensuring that. As such Andressa knew not to focus on befriending simply the Black sisters but those who also had political reach and cultural pull in their society. Sorted into Slytherin she was in the prime position to make such friends and quickly established a friendship with ISOLDE CROUCH [close friend] whose family had great political influence on her father’s side and half-blood witch LUCILLE JONES [best friend] who also came from an impressive family within the political sphere.
Andressa was determined to craft the perfect group of friends to surround herself with. Lucille’s twin sister FLORENCE JONES [close friend] was swiftly collected and BERTHA JORKINS [close friend] was added due to her fondness for rumours that kept Andressa informed. A member of Slug Club and head girl, Andressa had established herself as the reigning queen of Hogwarts, not just in Slytherin and felt decidedly unshakable until NARCISSA BLACK [rival] came calling for her crown. A slightly younger student, Andressa was fond of her older sister ANDROMEDA BLACK [friend], but found Narcissa to be nothing like her. Cold, unpredictable and calculated Andressa found it a full time occupation trying to manage her moves as well as those made by yet another rival GENEVIEVE AVERY [rival] who desperately vied for her attention. Even Andressa’s brother was not off limits and when Cristanio began dating Genevieve just to make her nervous for her poor brother’s heart and ensure Genevieve’s jealousy, Andressa realised she had her work cut out for her in commanding the social scene but was firm it would not drive a wedge between her and Cristiano.
Careful not to be outdone, Andressa knew that there was one real prize both Narcissa and Genevieve wanted above all. The prince of The Sacred Twenty-Eight, LUCIUS MALFOY [partner]. Knowing she was far more age appropriate and in a much better position to gain his favour, Andressa carefully befriended CORDELIA DAVIS [former close friend] and NATALIA SIMINOVA [close friend] in order to get closer to him. But then fate threw Andressa a curve ball. The passing of Andressa’s mother was both the making and breaking of the young witch. Though Antonia had been unwell a long time before she passed, it had still come as a shock to Andressa and Cristanio. Suddenly the social scene, her rivalry, they meant nothing to her and Andressa retreated from society to take care of her father and brother who head dealt with her passing harshly. Cristiano had always been emotionally dependent on their mother and when she died he crumbled into a shell of himself. Taking charge of her family, Andressa took it upon herself to quickly cut the marriage off between her brother and Genevieve. Her family was ruined and couldn’t pay for the contract luckily enough for Andressa, solving a problem of getting a self-serving leech out of their house.
Narcissa Black’s best friend KLAUDIE BURKE [rival] quickly arrived to pick up the pieces of her brother’s heartbreak, weaseling her way into their family home, no doubt to gain information. Andressa did not trust Klaudie, citing her as a spy in her house, no doubt spilling gossip about the fall of their great family.  Andressa was forced to get chatter back on why the Parkinsons would always remain at the top. Carefully she aligned herself with the fashion industry, giving money to young and up and coming designer ZAINA PRYITES [close friend/business partner] and offering to host her debut show at Parkinson manor in place of her mother’s famed ball. Inviting everyone who was relevant from the fashion industry and the social world, to packed ballroom Andressa opened the show in a glittering white ballgown sending shockwaves amongst the audience. It was unheard of for a member of the Twenty Eight to act like such a celebrity, but Andressa remembered what her mother had said. In this new world, The Twenty-Eight were dying and she would not see herself or her family lie lifeless amongst them. Afterwards Andressa enjoyed a successful career as a fashion model and gained herself a fan she had not expected to ask for her gloved hand. Lucius Malfoy pursued Andressa ruthlessly until they were the front page of every publication in London.
Andressa was delighted. She was established in her own right, with a man she truly loved who boosted her image and was awaiting a marriage proposal any day. But not all was perfect in her world. Even with Klaudie by his side, Cristiano spent most evenings drinking and dancing till he dropped. On a whim, Andressa bought a failing bar in Knockturn Alley, opening up The Grave Affair as the newest up and coming spot for socialites, with her brother as her bar manager at the helm. Though it was arguably not the best idea to go into the bar business with someone who likes to drink a lot, Andressa knew she needed to keep her brother occupied and was firm in her decision despite the pushback from Lucius. With her brother starting to steadily improve, Andressa is the happiest she has been in a long time, though a little voice in the back of her head is telling her not everything is as it should be. Often she catches her brother in dark corners whispering to her staff ALECTO CARROW [employee] and her brother AMYCUS CARROW [employee] and has noticed that BELLATRIX BLACK [person of interest] has become a regular visitor to Andressa’s little patch of London. With the mysterious disappearance of her star singer ROSALIE FLINT [employee] fresh on her mind, Andressa is certain something is going awry and is determined to get to the bottom of it.
— she is a LEVEL 5 WITCH & readied for war ;

To a Crown, To the Rum, & To our Freedom
by Ldrmaslaz248
It had been a year since she had lost a man she had- no still loved, she just wanted the chance to get him back. As she sailed to this realm's end, Davy Jones was tearing apart the seas one ship at a time. Then again he was being commanded to do so by the one who held a deathly grip on his heart, Lord Otho. With Pirates or anyone associating with pirates dropping like a cluster of flies, there was a song in the air screaming out for help. A Brethren Court was being summoned! And yet, could Beetlejuice even hope to reach Shipwreck Cove before he succumb to the desire to run his infuriatingly beautiful murderess through. On the other hand, he had much better plans in store for her.

Take a Virtual Tour of the Smithsonian American Art Museum's Humboldt Exhibition
Tumblr media
SMITHSONIANMAG.COM | May 1, 2020, 9 a.m.
It’s not what you’d expect from an art show. At the end of a long corridor, beyond a pulled-back heavy burgundy brocade curtain, a full-scale mastodon skeleton fills much of the rotunda-like space of the gallery. The fossil is the centerpiece of “Alexander von Humboldt and the United States: Art, Nature, and Culture,” an exhibition at the Smithsonian Museum of American Art. The show was poised to open with much fanfare earlier this year just as the COVID-19 crisis shuttered the museum. Today the stately mastodon sits waiting for crowds to return. In the meantime, viewers can go on a virtual tour of the show through a new video put together by the museum’s senior curator, Eleanor Jones Harvey.
For Harvey, the 11-foot tall, 20-foot long elephant ancestor is the uber statement on what polymath Alexander von Humboldt (1769-1859) meant to the American politicians, scientists, artists and writers who fawned over him during his brief six-week visit to the United States in 1804, and who became a part of his global network of admirers for a huge chunk of the late 18th and early 19th centuries.
The mastodon was a coup for SAAM—it is the first time the fossil will be back in America since 1847, when it made its way through Europe and ultimately ended up at The Hessisches Landesmuseum Darmstadt in Germany. A video shows the disassembly in Darmstadt and three-day reassembly at the museum.

Alexander von Humboldt and the United States: Art, Nature, and Culture
A Prussian-born geographer, naturalist, explorer, and illustrator, Alexander von Humboldt was a prolific writer whose books graced the shelves of American artists, scientists, philosophers, and politicians. Humboldt visited the United States for six weeks in 1804, engaging in a lively exchange of ideas with such figures as Thomas Jefferson and the painter Charles Willson Peale.

The mastodon—exhumed under the guidance of artist Charles Willson Peale and cobbled together with wood by a leading sculptor of the day—represents the intersection of art, culture and science, says Harvey. Similarly, Humboldt studied multiple disciplines and believed that “artists need to have enough scientific background to know what they are painting, and scientists should maintain a sense of aesthetic wonder to appreciate as they are collecting,” Harvey says.
Almost 300 plants and 100 animals are named after the Prussian-born naturalist. Have you heard of the Humboldt penguin? The Humboldt Squid, which swims in the Humboldt Current? How about the Humboldt lily, found in California, which also has a Humboldt County? Forests, rivers, peaks, mountain ranges and even a patch of plains on the moon have been named for him. Humboldt, who published 36 books, including his five-volume masterpiece, Cosmos, was a man of many interests—so many that it’s hard to catalog them all.
He mentored many young scientists and accumulated a vast network of admirers and collaborators through some 25,000 letters, often beseeching others to share findings from their explorations as a means of accumulating data to prove his “unity of nature” theory: that everything on the planet is interconnected, says Harvey. Humboldt may have been one of the first to warn about climate change, noting that the devastation of forests in Venezuela had changed the local climate.

“He’s really one of the last great enlightenment scientists and one of the first great modern scientists,” Harvey says, noting that his work was grounded in meticulously analyzed data.
Humboldt’s holistic perspective—and his desire to make people understand nature’s importance to humanity—is more relevant than ever, notes Hans-Dieter Sues, chair of paleontology at the Smithsonian’s National Museum of Natural History, in the preface to the exhibition catalogue.
Most present-day scientists “tend to focus on specific ecological changes without considering the complex web of interactions between humans and the environment,” writes Sues. Environmentalists also concentrate too much on the preservation of a particular species, “rather than taking a more integrated approach that also considers humans.”
“There is an urgent need for a Humboldtian perspective if we are to understand and address the unparalleled crisis now facing our species,” Sues writes.

It’s hard to overstate Humboldt’s popularity during his heyday—the late 18th and early-to-mid-19th centuries. Widely traveled and broadly known in Europe, he was able to secure backing from the King of Spain to travel throughout South America, Mexico and Cuba between 1799 and 1804, documenting plant life, geology, climates, peoples and discovering the location of the magnetic equator, allowing him to “recalibrate his equipment and take the most accurate readings to that point of longitude and latitude in the Americas,” according to Harvey.
His book, Personal Narrative of Travels to the Equinoctial Regions of the New Continent during the Years 1799–1804, and other writings, excerpted in newspapers, gained him fans in the United States. Humboldt arranged a stopping over in America at the end of the southern hemisphere journey, primarily to meet President Thomas Jefferson, who “he suspected was his intellectual equal,” but also to get a close-up look at democracy and to possibly explore the Louisiana Territory, says Harvey.
He was greeted like a rock star by Peale when he disembarked in Philadelphia and feted by other intellectuals during his visit. He arrived in America at an auspicious time, says Harvey. Humboldt believed that the nation should capitalize on its natural wonder—that places like Niagara Falls and Natural Bridge in Virginia (on land owned by Jefferson) were just as monumental as European castles and cathedrals.

The Peale mastodon—exhumed in upstate New York in 1801—fed into the mythology Jefferson hoped to create: that everything in America was bigger and better. Mammoth mania took over America after Peale displayed the fossil at his Philadelphia museum in late 1801. The unearthing of the bones is magnificently recalled in Peale’s 1806 painting, Exhuming the First American Mastodon.
Humboldt had written to Jefferson hoping to finagle an invite to the White House by mentioning that he’d found some mammoth teeth in the Andes. It worked, and he soon found himself hobnobbing with a network of American politicians, painters, writers and scientists. Among those who became a part of the Humboldt Hive: James Fenimore Cooper, Edgar Allan Poe, John Muir, Henry David Thoreau, Frederic Church, Walt Whitman and Samuel F.B. Morse.
The Prussian eventually came to consider himself half-American. Though he never visited the U.S. again after the 1804 trip, American luminaries frequently came to his Paris residence to bask in his presence. By 1847, Humboldt had been made a member of seven American scientific and cultural organizations.
Humboldt inspired a bevy of artists to ground their work in nature, including some of the greatest landscape painters of the time, Albert Bierstadt and Church. Twenty works by Church and two of Yosemite by Bierstadt are featured in the exhibition. Church’s paintings of Niagara Falls, Natural Bridge, and several Andean peaks, which he visited during a trip that recreated, step-by-step, Humboldt’s expedition through the same region, transport the viewer into a towering vision of nature.
Throughout his travels and his life, Humboldt was an advocate for social justice. “He thought the one flaw in American democracy was that it would not abolish slavery,” says Harvey. He urged James Madison to consider ending slavery, telling him that “nature is the domain of liberty.” Humboldt backed the anti-slavery 1856 presidential candidacy of John C. Fremont—who, during earlier explorations of the American west that were inspired by Humboldt, paid tribute to the scientist by naming various features after him, including a river in Nevada.

The plight of Native Americans also concerned Humboldt, especially in the wake of the Indian Removal Act of 1830. He convinced Prince Maximilian zu Wied-Neuwied, a protégé, and artist Karl Bodmer, to replicate part of the Lewis and Clark expedition to document the tribes of the Upper Missouri River. The exhibition features excerpts from the Prince’s journals and finely detailed watercolors of tribe members executed by Bodmer.
Humboldt also became friends with artist George Catlin, who had begun immersing himself in the documentation of America’s vanishing tribes starting in 1830. They meet in Paris, where Catlin has brought his portraits of Native Americans and a group of people from the Iowa tribe to educate the French—and shore up his dwindling finances. “It is the first and only time Humboldt will meet North American Indians,” says Harvey. Humboldt ends up touring the Louvre with some members of the tribe, one of whom kept a diary of the events of that trip.
A number of original Catlin portraits are on display, as is an 1845 painting depicting the visit to France, Karl Girardet’s Danse d’indiens Iowas devant le roi Louis-Philippe aux Tuileries (Dance of the Iowa Indians before the King Louis-Philippe at the Tuileries).
Not surprisingly, Humboldt is even connected with the founding of the Smithsonian Institution. When the Prussian traveled to England in 1790 to connect with a mentor there, he also ended up being introduced to a young chemist, James Smithson—the same Smithson whose bequest eventually created the Smithsonian in 1846.

The two reconnected in Paris in 1814, and spent a year in friendship, hanging out with liberal pro-American and pro-Democracy factions—making Smithson a bit of an outlier among his British compatriots. Humboldt and Smithson shared a love of collecting and analyzing, and spreading knowledge.
Well before the Smithsonian was established, Peale had already envisioned a national institution dedicated to the arts, sciences and American ideals and asked Humboldt to convince Jefferson to buy his museum collection as the foundation. Jefferson wasn’t interested in purchasing Peale’s materials. But the idea of a national institution continued to be discussed in Washington and elsewhere for decades. In 1835, Smithson’s last heir died and the estate was then, as directed by Smithson, bequeathed to the U.S. After much debate, Congress decided to accept the money. American attorney Richard Rush was dispatched to London to bring the dollars home, to, as Smithson put it, “found at Washington, under the name of the Smithsonian Institution, an Establishment for the increase & diffusion of knowledge among men.”
Those words “are a Humboldtian credo,” writes the museum’s director Stephanie Stebich in the introduction to the exhibition catalog. Most of the men ultimately involved in setting up the Smithsonian Institution had either known Humboldt, corresponded with him, or admired him, says Harvey.
“The entire Smithsonian is in some ways the bricks and mortar realization of everything that Humboldt cared about,” she says. The Institution’s 19 museums, the National Zoo, and 21 research centers and programs encompass Humboldt’s vast interests.
To make that point, the final gallery in the show features nine ongoing Smithsonian projects “that reflect Humboldtian enterprise,” says Harvey.
Though Humboldt was celebrated throughout the 19th century—with big parties in American cities every decade starting in 1869—the rise of Germany as a hostile power in the early 20th century caused Americans to stop teaching about the great scientist. Essentially, the lights went out on Humboldt, says Harvey.
“I’m trying to turn the lights back on and dust for his fingerprints, and say, ‘hey, he was here, and here and here,’” she says.
Currently, to support the effort to contain the spread of COVID-19, all Smithsonian museums in Washington, D.C. and in New York City, as well as the National Zoo are temporarily closed. The exhibition “Alexander von Humboldt and the United States: Art, Nature, and Culture” goes on view at the Smithsonian American Art Museum in 2020.

The Corsets&Lemons anonymous meme is still going strong!
I want to remind everyone that this is about works created in the 19th century and the rules can be found here:
Everything in the kinkmeme stays anonymous. Please never out anyone else either. Everyone is anon. (If you've never used DW before and don't know how to do that go here! )
If your prompt or your fill contains one of these themes (dub-con, non-con/rape, incest, violence, underage, necrophilia, and bestiality) it has to be tagged, either in the title or as first thing in the comment!
The obligatory warnings are: dub-con, non-con/rape, incest, violence, underage, necrophilia, and bestiality. Please spell the words correctly as people will be using automated scripts to hide those comments. If by any chance your fill goes toward a different direction than you thought it would and you need to add one of those warnings please do it as soon as possible, at the beginning of the new comment, so that people can stop reading it in time.
No negative comments or hate or kinkshame. This is a Your Kink Is Not My Kink space. If something doesn't strike your fancy just scroll on! And another note: some people make their first attempts at writing during kink memes because the anonymity gives them courage to start! Be nice and leave supporting comments! :D
No adaptations. We are trying to get back to the source material. This doesn't mean the you're not allowed to write wild AUs, just that if you write your Pride & Prejudice modern au it shouldn't start from Bridget Jones' diary or Lizzie Bennet Diaries but it should be an AU that's yours. (More about this in the FAQs )
RPF is allowed for people who lived in the 19th century.
The theme of the meme is 19th century. So every work created in the 19th century applies. So no, works that are created in the 20th century but are set in the 19th century do not apply.
The fills up until now
A lot of great works are being created! And I’m so excited about it! thanks everyone who is contributing!!

Amalgverse au (part 2?)
N/A: This is a cute idea. I want to make clear is Kitty not dumb, she is not accustomed to this environment but she is not dumb. I really don´t want to make Kitty into a born sexy yesterday. She does not know anything on the TV and media´s business but she is not dumb.
@djinmer4 @dannybagpipesarecalling
The Gotham News is famous for many things, one of them is the sheer amount of technology for each of their program or their needs. The Studio is a clear example of this equipped with the best resources to make each show in the TV channel(Gotham News has the news and the talk show for now as their primarily shows but there talk in expanded) and the show You´re wrong is a fine example of many things.
Many interns would have a similar reaction. Working in the New Gotham´s studio is a place where they can be closer of their dreams of being a professional.
Kitty Pryde is looking at the extended lines and cameras with childlike awe as she noticed the lines, the lights and people working in each little detail. Kurt Ryder is watching her, such glee in the eyes is not uncommon, many would feel this way when getting the chance to work here.
Of course, Kurt is not that arrogant to think the attention is for him or that he is the best in the entire world, however, even the newest interns never show not even a fraction of the same emotion as Kitty is giving so freely.
Ryder thought about Jessica Jones, a woman sent by their rival company to spy on them, she was...not a good actress to say the least and they manage to change the tidel in their rival´s schemes by giving Jessica false information.
But...something on Kitty does not seem to belong to a spy. Especially as she didn´t even question about the plans of the show or any other program linked to Gotham News.
"Miss Pryde" Ryder calls her out and her eyes are shinning in fascination with the different lights being throw, or she is the best actress or...there´s something really fishy going on.
"I want to discuss the schedule with you" Ryder offers still analysing her moves.  She is acting more and more like someone that never put a foot in a TV studio and this makes the situation even more mysterious.
Her doe eyes look at him and as much she is really cute Ryder won´t let his guard down until he gets the full story.
"Schedule?" Kitty asked tittling her head to the side slightly and showing a clear signal of confusion.
"For the show, do you know anything about ''you´re wrong''?" Kurt asked expecting any answer at this point. Kitty, surprising the man once again, only shakes her head.
"Is your show, you can do whatever you want, right?" the question is made with uncertainty as now she is bitting her bottom lip and maybe she can pick up some social cue and a few clues that this is not the typical answer. Ryder plays along.
"I wish, no, the idea is to reveal all the secrets my interviewee are hiding and expose the truth to the public" Ryder explained feeling proud of said explanation and by extension, himself.
Kitty claps her hands together as if now she understands the situation, and her eyes show a fierce determination and Ryder wishes it wasn´t that cute as it can be extremely hard to focus.
"You´re an inquisitor" Kitty explained now calmly and Ryder knows people compare him with many things, such as : evil Dr Phil, if Voldemort has a talk show , if Snape has a talk show, if Sauron has a talk show and his favourite don´t ever come to this show thinking you can deceive Ryder or you´ll make company to the devil.
(The last one seems way too dark for his like but sometimes, such reputation helps in his case, sometimes)
Now, Inquisitor is a new one. What´s caught his attention(aside from the comparison) is how that´s was the first thing that pops in her mind. No one mentions the inquisition, except the ones who joke with the famous line of Mounty Pynton.
Yet, she makes this comparison as if something natural...for her. For where she comes from. Ryder put this in his mind and proceeds as nothing happens.
"An Inquisitor? how so?" Kurt Ryder asks calmly not giving any negative emotion nor how craving for information the man is.
"Oh, Inquisitors do this, they have to extract the truth from people, and my old job was to protect people from any interference" now Kitty´s eyes widen and she is bitting the nail of her thumb, realizing that this is not a proper response for the cover and then smiles (the corner of her lip shiver slightly and Kurt is paying attention to everything) "fool you, I mean, inquisitors aren´t normal for us, mere citizen of this lovely city, you´re wrong, so...what I should do?"
She is making this too easy. But Ryder has no clue on what´s her endgame is.
"Well, J.J.Perry hire you too quickly, Bertha was the responsible for the light" Ryder points at the camera and notice her awe again, like a child that never saw such thing in her entire life "but the editing can wait, I suppose as your first day, you can chat with the interns and get the ropes of the situation"
Kitty nods and then asks looking determined.
"Can we put tons of different lights with this machine?" Kitty asked and Ryder knows this is really fishy.
"I hope not, as tons of light in the camera means no one will watch us, which will be a bad thing for the show" Ryder explained and Kitty nods saying there´s a moderate number of lights to use(not wrong) and she´ll do her best.
One last test, to see what´s her intention(a spy?)
"Today, I ´ll interview James Patrick, the man is allegedly accused of stealing tons of money from the health care to rich his pockets" and the said man has several friends who got rich in the process at the expenses of others.
Kitty frown at Kurt and now her hands are completely relaxed.
"What a nasty fellow. Those who steal must deal with the consequences" Kitty explained in a more serious tone and Kurt nods.
"The man even says something absurd every week, last time, the man said he saw the headless knight walking freely by the city at the night" now Kitty´s eyes are wide again, her lips are in a thin line, as her hands are in the famous opening and closening.
"Yeah, what absurd thing, where he said he saw the headless knight?" Kitty speaks trying(and failing) to be natural.
"On the residence of Chestnur" Ryder explained and Kitty nods and thanks him as she is about to leave, Kurt having a good idea of his own strength and how people perceive certain scenes, gently touch the sleeve of Kitty´s shirt gaining her attention.
"Where we are going? The show is there, I may need your help after you " now the man whisper on her ear "you did the famous Canadian-Australian ''you´re right'' and I´m always up for new points of view" Ryder smiles at her and notice she does not use perfume.
(but her smell is too unique. No woman in the city wears such scent. She is not from here, that´s a given at this point)
_________________________
The situation of the headless knight was dealt in Chestnur with easy as the knight himself appears to be really lost as Kitty feels sometimes in this new place. A nice talk and the man was back to his dimension, someone summons him by accident and the man was rumoured ever since.
(And she also dealt with the summoner of the knight and that person won´t do careless summon in the future)
Now, she has one last thing to do for the night. She must deal with the troll in the Grace Park´s garden. Which has a few problems and one of them is that Kitty has no idea where the place is.
"Ah, I shouldn´t have accepted this promotion" Kitty used to her own distorted voice thanks to the magical fedora and spells as right now Kitty is looking at a map that is not helping her case "Ok, I´m here and I need to go there...."
"No, actually, you are there and you need to be here" Nightcreeper shows up doing a pose that Kitty has no idea of what´s all about, however, due to the man wearing little to nothing, Kitty has no time or desire to guess what the pose is.
"Nightcreeper" her voice is tentative as she is afraid she got the name wrong and the lunatic only giggled maniacally as a reply "What are you doing here? Is the JLX is trying to meddle with magical affairs?" there´s a dark tone in her voice and Kitty knows she can take down at least half of the members and can cause serious damage to the rest and if the worst comes by, the council has no problem in resorting to extermination.
(Come to think of, is a bit ironic they choose Kitty to a job that basically ensures the peace among magical communities and humans as they see no problem in extermination. Then again, sometimes, sacrifices must be made but...she hopes the JLX gets the memo and don´t start meddling)
A green fuzzy hand is waving in front of her face snapping Kitty back to reality.
"Lost in thoughts, Kinder" Nightcreeper speaks don´t mind the dark tone or the subtle implication. Nightcreeper is too insane to follow a magical guardian and Kitty wonders why? "I was just doing my patrol" Kitty, having her identity hide, seems bemused by the explanation and somehow she has the feeling Nightcreeper seems to get and is amused.
"Are you trying to go to Grace Park´s garden?" Nightcreeper asks and Kitty didn´t reply, how did he know? "you are going on the wrong way" the lunatic giggles and point to the other side "the garden is there"
Oh, Kitty is chewing the nail of her thumb again and Nightcteeper seems amused by this gesture.
"You´re so cute" Nightcreeper speaks cooing at her and Kitty would say how she is not cute, maybe using a non-lethal but scary spell when then the lunatic speaks again "it makes me want to watch the show you´re right"
This makes the woman stops on her tracks and the lunatic laughs, the makes a proposition.
"Let me take you to the garden, I´m not breaking any rule here as I´m merely taking you to the Garden, whatever happens there it happens" Nightcreeper suggested and Kitty thought for a moment.
"Are you not afraid of magic? Why help me?"
"You´re lost and I´m the gallant hero who will escort the brave magical guardian to her destination" Nightcreeper replied and Kitty ends up accepting the deal.
_________________________
The garden is really pretty but sadly, Kitty is not here to enjoy the garden. Nightcreeper is jumping and bouncing like an energetic child.
"Shush, be quiet, he knows we are here" Kitty explained and Nightcreeper just smiles widely now.
Kitty walks near a bridge and chants a few words and suddenly, a huge troll shows up destroying part of the bridge and looks in a foul mood.
"I´m Butch" the troll replied. "I´m a troll"
"Hi, I would ever guess, my turn? Ok, I´m Constantine and you´re in a serious problem" Kitty explained and Kurt can even see her smiling at the big troll, smiling in victory as she is about to do something.
(So relaxed and in control, way different than in the TV studios)
The troll seems afraid for a moment, the name Constantine obviously has some weight, but, Butch immediately calms down and tries to attack Kitty. Which, of course, it was a terrible idea.
Nightcreeper teleports Kitty out before his huge fist could have caused any damage.
"Magical guardian, ok, does not mean I want you to be a pancake" Nightcreeper explained already imagine the expression on her face.
"Nightcreeper, trust on me, I´m the Constantine for a very good reason" Kitty speaks and phasing from his embrace the woman goes back to where Butch is.
Kitty uses one finger in her hands creating a golden line. Butch tries to step away, run, anything, but it´s was useless.
"Wait, I´m the son of the great Jim, the king of trolls, you can´t touch me, I have diplomatic immunity" his tone is desperate as the man is walking causing more damage to the garden.
"Yeah, but according to the laws of the troll´s state, no troll will harm a human or be on a human´s territory, you violate two of those rules and who do you think to ask to put an end on this?" Kitty speaks as now Butch realizes he is in the circle of the golden line as Kitty controlling the circle starts to erase Butch, the troll.
The troll is no more.
No words are needed as Kitty starts using magic to restore the garden, however, Nightcreeper waves at Kitty.
"There´s someone here" Nightcreeper points to a woman who is far too scared who is under the bridge tied up, it was not all the bridge that was destroyed, only the support, so the woman is fine.
A survivor never crossed into her mind during this whole exchange.
Kitty goes to the woman who is crying in fear.
"Is ok, is over, This is Nightcreeper he is a hero from the JLX and I´m a magical guardian, the Constantine" Kitty speaks and the woman didn´t move. "Are you in pain? I can help you, we can help"
Now the woman rose her eyes to her saviours and only speak in a low tone.
"That monster wanted to eat me, how can I live my life now?"
Kitty has no idea. Survivors are hardly on her mind(usually there are no survivors)
Nightcreeper then speaks gathering their attention.
"Live well and longer which is something that troll won´t do ever again." Nightcreeper gives this as an answer and the woman accept, for the lack of better term, this as an answer.
Healing the woman and send her where she will be safer was a night that Kitty did plan. To be fair, lately, nothing is what she expected.
Nightcreeper can see how she is sad(can imagine her doe eyes looking down, her lips shiver slightly as her hands are out of his view)  and is never the one to let sadness win any battle.
"Hey, magischer Wächter" Nightcreeper speaks poking her shoulder to get her attention like the real lunatic he is "are you hungry?"
"Food, now?" Kitty asked feeling confused and a bit angry, how can she think of food after what she saw.
"Yes, because you won´t accomplish nothing by looking sorry for yourself or for that woman, I know that sometimes even I can´t save everyone" Nightcreeper now stops poking her shoulder. "All you can do is try your best to save the others, you can´t change what this woman went through, however, because of you she is alive and that´s something to celebrate with churros"
Kitty can´t help by chuckle a little. This man is crazy.
"I don´t know where we can eat churros" Kitty replied.
"The horror, I know we can eat, and I can show you the city next time as you won´t look so lost"
"I feel like you want to be my partner in this crusade"
"Nah, I feel like we work together already"
"You´re crazy"
"You´re right"
Kitty accepts his offer to eat churros, the other is still being debated. The man is crazy enough to deal with her job, but, Constantine always works alone. Then again, maybe a change of pace can be good(uhm, as long the JLX does not meddle in the missions...why not?)

Für »Anger Management« (hier bei Amazon) bekam er im Schnitt 2 Millionen US-Dollar pro Folge. Und auch mit »Two and a Half Men« verdiente er gut. 1993. - Gaststars: Heather Locklear, Megan Fox, Denise Richards (Sheens Ex), Emilio Estevez (Sheens Bruder), Martin Sheen (Sheens Vater), Miley Cyrus und viele weitere.

Der Neue bei »Two and a Half Men«: Ashton Kutcher (m.) als Walden Schmidt. Rest in Peace, Conchata! In 1893 Boucheron was the primary adornments store to open a boutique on the Place Vendôme, an area known for its urbanity and polish. In this century, while staying consistent with its one of a kind convention and inheritance, Boucheron has become a name interchangeable with forceful and lavish current gems structures.
Dior
Christian Dior, situated in France, has been baiting the rich and acclaimed from everywhere throughout the world with totes, shoes, and adornments alongside different extras. Its one of a kind trademark adornments plans make it figure in the top worldwide brand names. It depicts a one of a kind style of creating strong adornments things with little, basic examples scratched or woven in gold, platinum and silver.
Bvlgari
Since 1884, Bulgari has been establishing the tone for Italian style in gems. It was established by a Greek named Sotirio who had a style for roman culture. With a high volume of inventiveness and advancement, Bulgari searches for motivation from Greek and Roman expressions without losing center around innovation. It tries different things with gold gems in strings of pearl and shaded stones. This gives an extraordinary brilliant touch to its items. By means of Condotti was its first store flaunting visits from eminence and film stars galore. In Rome, Paris, London, New York and Los Angeles, just as in Tokyo and Dubai, Bulgari has made its very own specialty.
H Samuel and Ernest Jones
In the UK, Signet is the biggest claim to fame retailer of fine gems with 591 stores across the country. Essentially arranged in prime uptown areas or shopping centers, the stores work under the flags "H.Samuel", "Ernest Jones" and "Leslie Davis" (an exchange name identified with Ernest Jones). Seal sells gold, silver, precious stone, and gemstone gems, watches, collectibles, and endowments. A few stores sell china and precious stone.
Ernest Jones works in precious stones, marked watches and gold adornments, which are completely promoted and showcased to speak to the more wealthy urban client.
H.Samuel offers a scope of adornments, gold, watches and blessings.
People groups Jewelers and Mappins Jewelers
Zale Corporation has caught the Canadian market through two brands, Peoples® Jewelers and Mappins® Fine Jewelers. The two chains are notable all through Canada. They give conventional adornments things through outlets situated in prime shopping centers and other deliberately all around put geographic areas. Established in 1919 as a privately-run company, Peoples Jewelers was the principal organization in Canada to sell gems on a period installment plan. Mappins Jewelers started working in 1935, by a British gem dealer named Mappins working in a Canadian firm. Mappins was obtained by Peoples Jewelers in 1964.
D' Damas
D'damas is a piece of the Gitanjali Digico Group which was built up in 1966. It is viewed as one of the soonest precious stone houses and the biggest jewel sending out organization in India. The customary job of precious stone makers trading the greater part of their creation to wholesalers overall is not, at this point adequate to stay serious in the present changing business sector situation. The Gitanjali Group has subsequently tuned itself with changing occasions by adjusting more current strategies. Being a DTC Sightholder and a precious stone maker, the Group has deliberately situated itself to make and advance jewels just as studded adornments right to the retail level. D' Damas brands incorporate "Asmi", "Assortment g", "Interminable", "Glitterati", "Gold Expressions", "Lamhe", "Nakshatra", "Birthplace", "Solitaire", "Victoria's Desire".

Kids More Likely to Use Marijuana if Their Parents Do
Tumblr media
MedicalResearch.com Interview with: Dr. Madras Bertha K. Madras PhD Director, Laboratory of Addiction Neurobiology Psychobiologist, Substance Use Disorders Division, Basic Neuroscience Division Professor of Psychobiology, Department of Psychiatry Harvard Medical School MedicalResearch.com: What is the background for this study? Parent use of marijuana is rising, and I wondered whether this could be associated with offspring use of specific substances and across several substances Several fathers have confided in me that they used marijuana to bond with their sons. They became horrified after witnessing their sons progress to using other drugs, especially heroin. In general, living with a parent using substances or having substance use disorders is an explicit risk for use of substances among young offspring. Yet, few studies have directly examined whether parental marijuana use elevates the risk for opioid misuse among adolescent and young adults living with parents.  Most importantly and to the best of our knowledge, none of the existing research  simultaneously explored frequency of  parental marijuana use and whether it related to adolescent and young adult offspring’s marijuana, tobacco, alcohol use, and opioid misuse. MedicalResearch.com: What are the main findings? We found substantial marijuana use among US parents living with offspring aged 12-30 years. Past year marijuana  use  among mothers (7.6%) or fathers (9.6%) was high, as was at least approximately weekly use (3.5% among mothers and 5.4% of fathers). Although parental marijuana use is reportedly lower than in non-parenting populations, this protective factor may be reduced with increasing marijuana use among parents. Parental past-year marijuana use was consistently associated with a generalized risk of past-year marijuana, tobacco, and alcohol use and opioid misuse among both adolescent and young adult offspring living in the same household. Even if a parent reported lifetime marijuana use but not in the past year, substance use among offspring was generally higher than among children whose parents had never used marijuana. Parental marijuana use was a specific risk factor for marijuana and tobacco use by both adolescent and  young adult offspring and for alcohol use by adolescent offspring, after adjusting for a number of  factors. Adolescent offspring’s substance use appeared to be particularly associated with whether a mother used  marijuana in the past or continues to use, and suggests apivotal influence of mothers’ marijuana consumption in substance use by her children. (delete “compared with a father” because NSDUH never samples both mother and father and offspring). MedicalResearch.com: What should readers take away from your report? Response: More parents with children (ages 12-30) living at home use marijuana. Children are much higher at risk of using  marijuana if parents use. They are at higher risk of using other drugs as well. Drug use at home is a risk for children MedicalResearch.com: What recommendations do you have for future research as a result of this work? Our findings should be incorporated into a general prevention campaign, educating parents on their potential and pivotal role in transmitting the risk for generalized substance use in their offspring. Clinicians should use this information to discuss parental substance use in the home and its potential role in fostering transgenerational substance use. As marijuana use among youth confers a high risk of other substance use, including opioids, it is important for parents to become aware that use of any one substance by offspring can be associated with use of other substances. We do not know whether parents used in front of their chilodren, whetehr they give marijuna to their children or many personal variables . No financial interest. The Simon Bing, Jr. House - 21 West 88th Street
After being brutally maltreated, the Bing house still manages to hint at its former charm.
In 1888 developer William H Stafford began construction of a row of four 19-foot wide homes on West 88th Street between Central Park West and Columbus Avenue.  Architect Henry Davidson blended Romanesque Revival with the more whimsical Queen Anne style, then threw in a touch of Flemish Renaissance Revival for good measure.  The balanced A-B-B-A row was flanked by homes with elaborate, pedimented entrances and Flemish gables.  The center, mirror image pair featured clustered columns with shared Romanesque capitals at the first and third floors.  In between they shared a large projecting bay with an arched pediment.
A tax photo reveals the still-intact row and its grab bag of architectural elements.  Note that No. 23 (left) and 19 retain retain their wonderful stained glass transoms over the parlor windows.  photograph via the NYC Dept of Taxation and Information Services.
Two of the houses, Nos. 21 and 17 were purchased by Spencer Aldrich, apparently as an investment.  On February 26, 1895 Aldrich and his wife, Elizabeth, sold No. 21 to Simon Bing, Jr.  The purchase price was kept private; however Bing's $20,250 mortgage--around $625,000 today--gives a hint. Bing was the partner of Jacob August in the clothing firm August, Bing & Co.  He and his wife, Louisa, had two sons, Alexander M., who was a junior at New York City College at the time, and Leo S. Bing. Sadly, Simon would not live to enjoy his new residence for long.  One month after purchasing the house, on March 24, 1895, the 56-year old died.  His funeral was held at Temple Beth-El on Fifth Avenue and 76th Street on March 27. Simon's unmarried brother, David, who was also a cloak manufacturer, moved into the house, no doubt to help his widowed sister-in-law with finances and other issues.   When David left the house on October 23, 1899 he was nattily dressed.  The family remembered he had on a tan overcoat, a black cutaway suit and a black derby hat.  There was nothing out of the ordinary when he departed; but this time he did not return.    Three days later Leo went to the police.  The Sun reported "He could not suggest any reason for his disappearance, which alarmed the family.  Mr. Bing is 56 years old, rather undersized, with a pale face, gray hair and moustache and black eyes."  The police sent out "an alarm" with his description.  Whether he was found or not is unclear; there seem to have been no follow-up reports and his name no longer appeared at this address. Having jointly inherited the 88th Street house, Leo and Alexander transferred title to their mother on January 24, 1902.  Although both had earned law degrees, they joined forces as real estate developers, forming the firm of Bing & Bing.  Before the outbreak of World War I it would be recognized as one of the most influential and important apartment building developers in the city. Louisa Bing remained in the house only two more years.  She sold it on June 29, 1904 to Thomas W. Jones.  Like the Bing brothers, he was a partner with Louis M. Jones in real estate development. He and his wife had a daughter, Bertha. Jones's stature in real estate circles was evidenced when he became involved in a massive deal in 1910 with, among others, Frank N. Hoffstot, president of the Pressed Steel Car Company.  Jones's commission on the complicated transaction, which included properties in New York City and Philadelphia, was $36,000--or about $982,000 today.  In reporting on aspects of the deal the New York Times on August 6, 1910 referred to Jones as a "New York millionaire." On March 7, 1912 the New York Herald announced "In a setting of pink roses and palms at Delmonico's last night Miss Bertha Jones, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Jones of 21 West Eighty-eighth street, was married to Mr. I. James von Sholly."  The article noted "Mr. von Sholly and his wife leave to-day for the West Indies." Four years later The Sun reported that Jones had rented the 88th Street house "for a long term of years."  His tenant was Theodore Van Yorx, a widely-recognized voice coach.  He established his studio here, advertising in The New York Clipper on August 26, 1916 in a single line: "The Singing and Speaking Voice.  Theo. Van Yorx, 21 W. 88th St., New York." The Music News said of him, "Mr. Van Yorx's very broad experience in the professional and teaching field eminently fit him for teaching and make his training and his suggestions invaluable...For many years Mr. Van Yorx was one of American's foremost tenors in the concert, oratorio, recital and church choir fields." Van Yorx would have to move on in 1920 when Jones sold the house to Blanche Blosveren, who almost immediately resold it in October to Dr. Bernard Sour and his wife, the former Adele Somborn.  The title was put in Adele's name. Born in Shreveport, Louisiana in 1870, Sour received his medical degree from the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Columbia University in 1893.  During World War I he served as an examining physician for the draft board.  He and Adele had married in 1904 and had two sons, Robert and George. The population of the house unexpectedly--and bizarrely-- grew by one seven months after the couple moved in.  On May 19, 1921 The New York Herald reported that broker Percy Heineman "is ignored in the will of his wife, Lucille."  If Heineman was shocked to discover he had been cut out of his wife's estate, the Sours were even more so to find that they had inherited a daughter.  The newspaper wrote "The guardianship of their eight-year-old daughter, Bella, is confided to 'my friend,' Dr. Bernard Sour of 21 West Eighty-eighth street, to whom is made also a bequest of $20,000." "Dr. Sour was surprised at learning of the bequests and his guardianship.  He said he had known the Heinemans a number of years, but not very intimately, and could shed no light on the difficulties that led to the odd provisions in Mrs. Heineman's will," reported the Herald.  Sour's portion of the sizable estate would be equal to more than a quarter of a million dollars today.  Little Bella received the rest.   The brothers enjoyed a privileged upbringing and top level schooling.  George Bernard Sour graduated from Princeton in 1930.  His engagement to Natalie H. Machol was announced on July 28, 1933. The Sours sold No. 21 in July of 1937.  Bernard and Adele moved to an apartment at No. 112 Park Avenue where the doctor died of a heart attack at the age of 71 four years later. In 1963 No. 19 next door was demolished by the Franklin School, to be replaced by a featureless gray box.  In doing so the No. 21 lost its visual balance and the sliced-in-half bay looked awkward at best.  In the meantime, the house was converted to four apartments.
The carnage had only begun.  In February 2017 the former Bing house was sold for $11.65 million to be absorbed by the Dwight School.  A massive renovation was announced to internally combine three houses on 88th Street--Nos. 17 through 21--and three more on West 89th Street, Nos 18 through 22.  The Bing has was totally gutted. While the charming facade, albeit without its matching twin, survives, there is nothing else left.  Department of Buildings documents explain flatly "retained for Historical Purposes Only." photographs by the author

Alex Haley
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Alexander Murray Palmer "Alex" Haley (August 11, 1921 – February 10, 1992) was an American writer and the author of the 1976 book Roots: The Saga of an American Family. ABC adapted the book as a television miniseries of the same name and aired it in 1977 to a record-breaking audience of 130 million viewers. In the United States the book and miniseries raised the public awareness of African American history and inspired a broad interest in genealogy and family history.
Haley's first book was The Autobiography of Malcolm X, published in 1965, a collaboration through numerous lengthy interviews with the subject, a major African-American leader.
He was working on a second family history novel at his death. Haley had requested that David Stevens, a screenwriter, complete it; the book was published as Alex Haley's Queen. It was adapted as a film of the same name released in 1992.
Early life and education
Alex Haley was born in Ithaca, New York, on August 11, 1921, and was the oldest of three brothers and a sister. Haley lived with his family in Henning, Tennessee, before returning to Ithaca with his family when he was five years old. Haley's father was Simon Haley, a professor of agriculture at Alabama A&M University, and his mother was Bertha George Haley (née Palmer), who had grown up in Henning. The family had African American, Mandinka, Cherokee, Scottish, and Scots-Irish roots. The younger Haley always spoke proudly of his father and the obstacles of racism he had overcome.
Like his father, Alex Haley was enrolled at age 15 in Alcorn State University, a historically black college in Mississippi and, a year later, enrolled at Elizabeth City State College, also historically black, in North Carolina. The following year he returned to his father and stepmother to tell them he had withdrawn from college. His father felt that Alex needed discipline and growth, and convinced him to enlist in the military when he turned 18. On May 24, 1939, Alex Haley began what became a 20-year career in the United States Coast Guard.
Haley traced back his paternal ancestry, through genealogical research, to Jufureh.
Coast Guard career
Haley enlisted as a mess attendant. Later he was promoted to the rate of petty officer third-class in the rating of steward, one of the few ratings open to African Americans at that time. It was during his service in the Pacific theater of operations that Haley taught himself the craft of writing stories. During his enlistment other sailors often paid him to write love letters to their girlfriends. He said that the greatest enemy he and his crew faced during their long voyages was not the Japanese forces but rather boredom.
After World War II, Haley petitioned the U.S. Coast Guard to allow him to transfer into the field of journalism. By 1949 he had become a petty officer first-class in the rating of journalist. He later advanced to chief petty officer and held this grade until his retirement from the Coast Guard in 1959. He was the first chief journalist in the Coast Guard, the rating having been expressly created for him in recognition of his literary ability.
Haley's awards and decorations from the Coast Guard include the Coast Guard Good Conduct Medal (with 1 silver and 1 bronze service star), American Defense Service Medal (with "Sea" clasp), American Campaign Medal, Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal, European-African-Middle Eastern Campaign Medal, World War II Victory Medal, Korean Service Medal, National Defense Service Medal, United Nations Service Medal, and the Coast Guard Expert Marksmanship Medal. Further, the Republic of Korea awarded him the War Service Medal 10 years after he died.
Literary career
After retiring from the U.S. Coast Guard, Haley began another phase of his journalism career. He eventually became a senior editor for Reader's Digest magazine.
Playboy
 magazine
Haley conducted the first interview for Playboy magazine. His interview with jazz musician Miles Davis appeared in the September 1962 issue. Haley elicited candid comments from Davis about his thoughts and feelings on racism. That interview set the tone for what became a significant feature of the magazine. Rev. Martin Luther King, Jr.'s Playboy Interview with Haley was the longest he ever granted to any publication.
Throughout the 1960s Haley was responsible for some of the magazine's most notable interviews, including one with George Lincoln Rockwell, leader of the American Nazi Party. He agreed to meet with Haley only after gaining assurance from the writer that he was not Jewish. Haley remained professional during the interview, although Rockwell kept a handgun on the table throughout it. (The interview was recreated in Roots: The Next Generations, with James Earl Jones as Haley and Marlon Brando as Rockwell.) Haley also interviewed Muhammad Ali, who spoke about changing his name from Cassius Clay. Other interviews include Jack Ruby's defense attorney Melvin Belli, entertainer Sammy Davis, Jr., football player Jim Brown, TV host Johnny Carson, and music producer Quincy Jones.
The Autobiography of Malcolm X
The Autobiography of Malcolm X, published in 1965, was Haley's first book. It describes the trajectory of Malcolm X's life from street criminal to national spokesman for the Nation of Islam to his conversion to Sunni Islam. It also outlines Malcolm X's philosophy of black pride, black nationalism, and pan-Africanism. Haley wrote an epilogue to the book summarizing the end of Malcolm X's life, including his assassination in New York's Audubon Ballroom.
Haley ghostwrote The Autobiography of Malcolm X based on more than 50 in-depth interviews he conducted with Malcolm X between 1963 and Malcolm X's February 1965 assassination. The two men had first met in 1960 when Haley wrote an article about the Nation of Islam for Reader's Digest. They met again when Haley interviewed Malcolm X for Playboy.
The first interviews for the autobiography frustrated Haley. Rather than discussing his own life, Malcolm X spoke about Elijah Muhammad, the leader of the Nation of Islam; he became angry about Haley's reminders that the book was supposed to be about Malcolm X. After several meetings, Haley asked Malcolm X to tell him something about his mother. That question drew Malcolm X into recounting his life story.
The Autobiography of Malcolm X has been a consistent best-seller since its 1965 publication. The New York Times reported that six million copies of the book had sold by 1977. In 1998 TIME magazine ranked The Autobiography of Malcolm X as one of the 10 most influential nonfiction books of the 20th century.
In 1966 Haley received the Anisfield-Wolf Book Award for The Autobiography of Malcolm X.
Super Fly T.N.T.
In 1973 Haley wrote his only screenplay, Super Fly T.N.T.. The film starred and was directed by Ron O'Neal.
Roots
In 1976 Haley published Roots: The Saga of an American Family, a novel based on his family's history, going back to slavery days. It started with the story of Kunta Kinte, who was kidnapped in the Gambia in 1767 and transported to the Province of Maryland to be sold as a slave. Haley claimed to be a seventh-generation descendant of Kunta Kinte, and his work on the novel involved twelve years of research, intercontinental travel, and writing. He went to the village of Juffure, where Kunta Kinte grew up and listened to a tribal historian (griot) tell the story of Kinte's capture. Haley also traced the records of the ship, The Lord Ligonier, which he said carried his ancestor to the Americas.
Haley has stated that the most emotional moment of his life occurred on September 29, 1967, when he stood at the site in Annapolis, Maryland, where his ancestor had arrived from Africa in chains exactly 200 years before. A memorial depicting Haley reading a story to young children gathered at his feet has since been erected in the center of Annapolis.
Roots was eventually published in 37 languages. Haley won a special Pulitzer Prize for the work in 1977. The same year, Roots was adapted as a popular television miniseries of the same name by ABC. The serial reached a record-breaking 130 million viewers. Roots emphasized that African Americans have a long history and that not all of that history is necessarily lost, as many believed. Its popularity also sparked a greatly increased public interest in genealogy.
In 1979 ABC aired the sequel miniseries, Roots: The Next Generations, which continued the story of Kunta Kinte's descendants. It concluded with Haley's travel to Juffure. Haley was portrayed at different ages by Kristoff St. John, The Jeffersons actor Damon Evans, and Tony Award winner James Earl Jones. In 2016, History aired a remake of the original miniseries. Haley appeared briefly, portrayed by Tony Award winner Laurence Fishburne.
Haley was briefly a "writer in residence" at Hamilton College in Clinton, New York, where he began work on Roots. He enjoyed spending time at a local bistro called the Savoy in nearby Rome, where he would sometimes pass the time listening to the piano player. Today, there is a special table in honor of Haley at the Savoy, and a painting of Haley writing Roots on a yellow legal tablet.
Plagiarism dispute and other criticism
Roots faced two lawsuits that charged plagiarism and copyright infringement. The lawsuit brought by Margaret Walker was dismissed, but Harold Courlander's suit was successful. Courlander's novel The African describes an African boy who is captured by slave traders, follows him across the Atlantic on a slave ship, and describes his attempts to hold on to his African traditions on a plantation in America. Haley admitted that some passages from The African had made it into Roots, settling the case out of court.
Genealogists have also disputed Haley's research and conclusions in Roots. The Gambian griot turned out not to be a real griot, and the story of Kunta Kinte appears to have been a case of circular reporting, in which Haley's own words were repeated back to him. None of the written records in Virginia and North Carolina line up with the Roots story until after the Civil War. Some elements of Haley's family story can be found in the written records, but the most likely genealogy would be different from the one described in Roots.
Haley and his work have been excluded from the Norton Anthology of African-American Literature, despite his status as the United States' best-selling African-American author. Harvard University professor Dr. Henry Louis Gates, Jr., one of the anthology's general editors, has denied that the controversies surrounding Haley's works are the reason for this exclusion. In 1998 Dr. Gates acknowledged the doubts surrounding Haley's claims about Roots, saying, "Most of us feel it's highly unlikely that Alex actually found the village whence his ancestors sprang. Roots is a work of the imagination rather than strict historical scholarship."
Later life and death
Early in the 1980s Haley worked with the Walt Disney Company to develop an Equatorial Africa pavilion for its Epcot Center theme park. Haley appeared on a CBS broadcast of Epcot Center's opening day celebration, discussing the plans and exhibiting concept art with host Danny Kaye. Ultimately, the pavilion was not built due to political and financial issues.
Late in the 1970s Haley had begun working on a second historical novel based on another branch of his family, traced through his grandmother Queen; she was the daughter of a black slave woman and her white master. He did not finish the novel before dying in Seattle, Washington, of a heart attack. He was buried beside his childhood home in Henning, Tennessee. At his request, the novel was finished by David Stevens and was published as Alex Haley's Queen. It was subsequently adapted as a movie of the same name in 1993.
Late in Haley's life he had acquired a small farm in Clinton, Tennessee, although at the time it had a Norris, Tennessee address. The Farm is a few miles from the Museum of Appalachia, and Haley lived there until his death. After his death the property was sold to the Children's Defense Fund (CDF), which calls it the Alex Haley Farm. The nonprofit organization uses the farm as a national training center and retreat site. An abandoned barn on the farm property was rebuilt as a traditional cantilevered barn, using a design by architect Maya Lin. The building now serves as a library for the CDF.
Awards and recognition
In 1977 Haley received the Spingarn Medal from the NAACP, for his exhaustive research and literary skill combined in Roots.
The food-service building at the U.S. Coast Guard Training Center, Petaluma, California, was named Haley Hall in honor of the author.
In 1999 the Coast Guard honored Haley by naming the cutter USCGC Alex Haley after him.
The U.S. Coast Guard annually awards the Chief Journalist Alex Haley Award, which is named in honor of the writer as the Coast Guard's first chief journalist (the first Coast Guardsman in the rating of journalist to be advanced to the rate of chief petty officer). It rewards individual authors and photographers who have had articles or photographs communicating the Coast Guard story published in internal newsletters or external publications.
In 2002 the Republic of Korea (South Korea) posthumously awarded Haley its Korean War Service Medal (created in 1951), which the U.S. government did not allow its service members to accept until 1999.
Recordings
Alex Haley Tells the Story of His Search for Roots (1977) – 2-LP recording of a two-hour lecture Haley gave at the University of Pennsylvania. Released by Warner Bros. Records (2BS 3036).
Legacy
Collection of Alex Haley's personal works
The University of Tennessee Libraries, in Knoxville, Tennessee, maintains a collection of Alex Haley's personal works in its Special Collections Department. The works contain notes, outlines, bibliographies, research, and legal papers documenting Haley's Roots through 1977. Of particular interest are the items showing Harold Courlander's lawsuit against Haley, Doubleday & Company, and various affiliated groups.
