A Year of Lupin

Part 2

Voyage to Danger

This was pretty fine. Animation was neat; story was good. It was another typical Lupin adventure. The gang got a hold a submarine to stop a weapon smuggling location. Wild, yes, but I adore this TV special for showing the characters care for each other. Also, I enjoy the music score and glad to hear the original sub cast are back.

Farewell to Nostradamus

Wow! This one was amazing! Animation, music, voice cast, story: above and beyond! I was entertained throughout the whole movie. I won't bother explaining the story because it's insane but still great. I also found Kanichi's performance as Lupin to be good. He still carried the spirit of Lupin that Yasuo did as Lupin. Farewell to Nostradamus is one of the greats from Lupin.

Island of Assassins

This was pretty violent and brutal for a Lupin project. Let's just say Lupin and the gang are on an island full of murderous assassins. The style in animation, and story is mature with twists & turns. I liked the approach this project did and remained speechless.

Tokyo Crisis

Oh my gosh, this was so fun. In a course of some days, Lupin and the gang need to get two ancient photos to find treasure. Meanwhile, Zenigata tries to solve it along with Mariya, a woman with special powers. Animation and story were good, but the highlight was the sub cast of this project. Overall, excellent watch.

Alcatraz Connection

You'd be surpised to learn about the connection of Alcatraz to the Kennedy brothers. The animation was the first of Lupin going digital which was off putting at first, but I got used to it. Overall, it was decent with solid music and voice acting.

Episode 0: The First Contact

I love this special. The origin story of how the Lupin gang met. Some parts of the animation were good, and music was fantastic.

Return of Pycal

This one is shorter than the others which thank goodness because it sucked. I know CG was new, but still it was not good. Also, for the return of an old character from Lupin was weak. I can only say the cool part was the montage of Monkey Punch's illustrations from the Lupin manga. Other than that, not good.

TMS Entertainment USA are celebrating the holidays in style, with a limited time release of four Lupin III feature films, and a short Part 2 Christmas marathon! 🎄🎅

Fans within the United States will be able to catch Episode 0 ~ First Contact, Voyage to Danger, Jigen's Gravestone, and Dragon of Doom for FREE on YouTube between December 22nd 2023, through to January 4th, 2024.

In addition, Japanese and English language dubbed episodes of both Part 2 Christmas capers, The Sleight Before Christmas and Christmas at Tiffany's, will also be streaming in the U.S. on YouTube this December 24th, at 13:30 PT.

Hey hey, kids. Been a while since I did one of these, huh? Well, I’m in a Lupin mood, so let’s jump right back into the mapcap, action-packed, homoerotic world of my favorite monkey thief and his band of gay autistics with the fourteenth special and one of my favorite specials - Episode 0: First Contact.

Because I own this one on DVD, I’m not gonna do any screencaps. Sorry if that ruins it for some people.

The framing device for this special already gets me every time - Jigen is being interviewed by a reporter who wants to know how the Lupgang met. She’s tried interviewing Lupin himself, but all he does is hit on her. So she hits up the gay best friend that she knows won’t do that. Girl has my boy clocked and we aren’t even a minute in. Trust me, it’ll only get gayer from here.

I already knew it was actually Lupin telling the 'story' of how everyone first met in First Contact, not Jigen, but I think the first hint is likely how Lupin acted so calm around Fujiko in their first meeting.

You know that is just a load of bullshit coming from him, considering how Part 2 Lupin acts around Fujiko even after years of knowing each other. He would be a mess in their actual first meeting.

There's a manga and/or anime franchise about Lupin the Third, in Lupin's universe.

Throughout the franchise, there's a bunch of references to past content and meta stuff. Taken one by one they're just easter eggs, but when you put them all together, it's highly probable that there is some sort of intradiegetic biopic-ish series about Lupin III, in Lupin's universe.

The Pursuit of Harimao's Treasure: Lupin is reading a manga by Monkey Punch, implying that MP exists in his universe

Lupin III VS Detective Conan: Kogoro Mouri thought Lupin III was a comic book character and is surprised to learn that he is real

Princess of the Breeze: a news article about Lupin mentions "TV first series", "TV 2nd series", and "[ep 2]"

Green VS Red: there is a poster of the movie "The Castle of Cagliostro", and Yasuo is seen listening to Fire Treasure from the OST

Characters are heard singing or whistling the opening theme on multiple occasions: a banker in Part 2 ep 143 “The Miami Bank Raid Anniversary” (8:44), and Lupin himself in "The Pursuit of Harimao's Treasure" (4:43) and in Part 2 ep 99 “The Scattered Magnum” (06:35), among others

Lupin's phone ringtone in "Swallowtail Tattoo" is the opening theme (30:50)

Goemon plays his music theme on the flute in "Episode 0 - First Contact" (39:40). Granted, Goemon's not the kind of nerd who would do that, but that movie is a story told by Lupin and possibly entirely made up, and he's the kind of nerd who would describe Goemon playing his own theme.

Zenigata's phone ringtone in "Angel Tactics" is his own theme (41:18); he and a couple of ICPO officers are also listening to the full song with lyrics version of Zenigata March on the radio in "The Columbus Files" (1:17:10)

And last but not least:

Part 6 ep 17 “Win or Lose in 0.1 Seconds” : Linfeng's large collection of Lupin III figurines (they could be custom made; but they could also be mass-produced)

and "Dragon of Doom" (01:16) : plushies of the whole gang in a claw crane machine, which are definitely mass-produced.

In conclusion:

"We heard that you liked Lupin III, so we put Lupin III in your Lupin III so you can Lupin III while you Lupin III !"
