Unwound & Circuit des Yeux Live Show Review: 3/8, Thalia Hall, Chicago
Tumblr media
BY JORDAN MAINZER
I can’t think of another way to say it: How lucky are we that Unwound decided to reunite? Mid-way through their incredible set Wednesday night at Thalia Hall, my friend (who had a spare last minute ticket) turned to me and remarked, “I feel like this is the closest we’ll ever get to seeing Nirvana.” The comparison is apt. If Nirvana’s is one of if not the most acclaimed band of the 90′s, Unwound is an under-the-radar pick for the best; the A.V. Club named them as such 10 years ago. Over their decade of releasing music, the Washington-based band churned out seven records of post-hardcore classics, from debut Fake Train and sophomore album New Plastic Ideas to their final art rock masterpiece Leaves Turn Inside You, never straying from the DIY ethics they came to be known for.
Tumblr media
Unwound broke up in 2002, as bassist Vern Rumsey’s alcoholism worsened, and serious efforts to reunite were hampered by his addiction as late as 2019. With Rumsey’s blessing, frontperson Justin Trosper and drummer Sara Lund rehearsed with bassist Jared Warren, who never got to tell Rumsey about the band’s intent to play shows before Rumsey’s death during COVID. But in an era when artists’ lives in between album release cycles are often displayed for the world to see, the combination of the pandemic and Unwound’s secrecy left the general public comparatively in the dust until last summer. On July 12, the band announced a reunion tour, revealing that they had practiced earlier that spring with the lineup of Trosper, Lund, Warren, and Nocturnal Habits guitarist/keyboardist Scott Seckington. In a statement proving the band’s ethos was as strong as ever, Trosper said, “Starting over again is a rebellious act against our failure.”
Tumblr media
Indeed, Unwound’s music is often rebellious without sounding like our schema of rebellion, their dynamics and tight musicianship on display Wednesday night. “Envelope” deftly switched from loud to quiet and back. “Disappoint” burned into its climax. The one-two-three punch of “Valentine Card”, “Kantina”, and “Were Are and Was or Is”, presented in segue like on Fake Train, started as charging punk before expanding into instrumental post-rock, apropos for a band whose evolution in their recorded output was more sneaky than obvious. It’s hard to say, but I can’t say the band sounded much different than what I imagine they’d have sounded like with their original lineup, both members and numbers-wise. If anything, with four instrumentalists on stage, they were more rounded than sharp, all-encompassing and enrapturing.
Tumblr media
A few songs prior to the band’s intermission (more bands need an intermission!), Lund asked, not taking for granted the band’s fanbase, “How many people drove far to get here?” At least 1/3 of the room shouted. She continued, “Thank you to young people. We need you.” It’s not just lip service. The band has been handpicking openers for their set, and Wednesday’s was none other than Circuit des Yeux, one and a half years removed from the release of their Matador debut -io. Their performance was the most expressive I’ve ever seen Haley Fohr. Her deep, booming, operatic voice was there as usual, as was her immaculate picking and strumming, but this time, she repeatedly pounded her chest in conjunction with Ashley Guerrero’s drums, primal in her utterances. Throughout the set, Fohr dragged around her microphone, emulated fainting spells, and danced, her stage presence matching the drama of her music. Longtime collaborator Whitney Johnson of Matchess distorted her viola to sound like an electric guitar on “Dogma” and used pedals to create an enormous sound. Though I was glad to hear -io songs live for the first time, Reaching For Indigo’s “Black Fly” was the unabashed highlight of the set. Fohr’s guitar was Crazy Horse-level distorted atop Guerrero’s drum rolls and tom-work and Johnson’s plucking. As Johnson’s viola took on fiddle-like timbres, the song could have passed for a Songs: Ohia jam.
Tumblr media
After performing “Vanishing”, Fohr declared, “Happy International Women’s Day to Sara Lund.” With an all-female band, opening for punk legends who themselves supported radical feminist politics, it was the cherry on top of a night that a year prior nobody in the room would have ever expected, even the folks on stage.

wanted to post more over here and had the idea to do lil reviews for albums from years past. i'm gonna try to post a review for this series, as the name suggests, every thursday!! this week we're taking a look at the phenomenal debut album from one of Washington's greatest bands: Fake Train by Unwound!!! also feel free to follow me on rate your music and twitter <3
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Fake Train - Unwound
◇ release year: 1993 ◇ genres: post-hardcore, noise rock, emo
My experience with getting into Unwound's catalog is weird, but probably not that uncommon in this day and age. The first album of theirs I listened to was 2001's Leaves Turn Inside You, a sprawling, genre-bending double album which unbeknownst to me at the time was a big shift in the band's sound. I decided after a few months of revisiting and falling in love with that album to go back through their whole catalog. I went back to the start, their debut studio album Fake Train. Hearing this album for the first time was a wild experience. It was vastly different from Leaves, but you could already tell some of the pieces were being placed that would eventually form that record. However, the magnitude of their final album in no way undercuts how brilliant their work throughout the 90's is. Especially, Fake Train. Unwound would lean into the noise rock aspect of their sound throughout the decade, but they never sound as scrappy and lo-fi as they do on this record ever again. Everything here has an edge to it. It's such an exhilarating from the start with the opener "Dragnalus." Justin Trosper's dark plodding guitar builds up to make way for the other band members to form this noisy and raw, yet surprisingly rhythmic opener. I feel like the band's ear for really good rhythms is overlooked. It's even present here despite the lo-fi nature of everything. The song's subject matter is pretty standard for noise rock/emo, general apathy for one's surroundings. It's like a less violent version of "Kerosene" by Big Black. Trosper's vocals really add to it, his delivery hammering home the disinterest one can feel with life itself. It's a very strong way to start the album.
Tumblr media
"Lucky Acid" has a lot more fire and opens with some screeching guitar feedback and features a likewise more fiery vocal performance. The song seems to be about going on a bad acid trip as well as suicidal ideations. Heavy stuff and the band reflect that musically. Sara Lund's drumming here is amazing, one of her strongest performances on the whole album. "Nervous Energy" has the band shifting into a bit of a post-punk sound intermittent between their big blasts of noise. I have to shout out Vern Rumsey's bass on this song, it's so good. Trosper's "YEAH's" on the track are a highlight of the whole album, it's as if he's throwing himself at the microphone. The centerpiece of the album is the three-track run of "Valentine Card," "Kantina," and "Were, Are and Was or Is." On my first listen to the album, this was where it all clicked. "Valentine Card" is one of the sharpest moments in the band's catalog. Every band member is firing on all cylinders. "Kantina" might be my favorite on the whole record. It sounds so overwhelming in the best way possible. One of those songs that makes you feel like everything around you is crumbling down. You get a small moment of levity as Trosper's muted, spoken-word vocals come in as the band starts ramping up into one of the most explosive moments in their discography. Trosper's strained delivery of the "WAIT, WAIT, WAIT, WAIT DON'T GOOOOOOO" lives in my head rent-free. The way he's almost battling with the other instruments to even be heard is almost heartbreaking, it really hits hard. This track flows seamlessly into "Were, Are and Was or Is," the only instrumental track on the record. It is perfectly placed on the album, providing a bit of a break from the intensity of the tracks before. The band would do more instrumental tracks in the future like "Abstraktions" on New Plastic Ideas and "Go to Dallas and Take a Left" on Repetition, but this still stands as one of the strongest. It also shows just how incredible the band sounds. "Honourosis" kinda flew under my radar after those three songs, but its greatness has been revealed to me over time. It's one of the softer moments on the record all things considered, but it's one of the strongest songs here lyrically. "Pure Pain Sugar" and "Gravity Slips," while good, are probably the weakest moments here. There's nothing wrong with either of them, but I just think the ideas in them were better executed in other places on the record.
Tumblr media
The album ends on a high note with the last three tracks. "Star Spangled Hell" sounds like how walking on hot pavement feels, but ... in a good way. I love how the guitar sounds here. "Ratbite" has the same scrappy energy as a lot of early punk songs. You could've told me it was from some random early 80's punk band's 12-minute EP and I would've believed you. "Feeling$ Real" is one of the more experimental tracks here and it ends the album on a blistering note. Ending with Trosper singing "THE WORLD STARTS COMING DOOOOWN" as the band's instrumentation matches that sentiment. Fake Train ranks among the strongest debut albums of all time. A great start for one of the most influential bands of the decade and one of the pillars of the post-hardcore scene. They would go on to make stronger records in the years following, but Fake Train remains an important listen.

Module 11: Anatomy of a Scene
Casablanca and Some Like It Hot are the films I selected from lists A and B. I am going to be analyzing the film Casablanca. German invaders in World War II made their way to America for protection, as depicted in the movie Casablanca. Nevertheless, to get there, they would have to go to Casablanca, where they would have to apply for unusual departure permits. Managed by American immigrant Rick Blaine, who is also quite cynical and yet cannot return there, Rick's Cafe is Casablanca's most popular spot. In the film Casablanca, Rick's Cafe is a melting pot for individuals from different backgrounds and nationalities, creating a tense and intriguing atmosphere. As the story unfolds, Rick finds himself caught in a web of love, politics, and personal sacrifices, ultimately leading to a heart-wrenching decision that will forever shape the lives of those around him. The documents that two German messengers were carrying were pilfered. Rick often gets letters from Ugarte, which he intends to sell, but not before he is taken into custody for the couriers' murders. No political ties matter to Captain Renault, the Chief of Police, who tells Rick that Victor Laszlo, the head of the Czechoslovak resistance, is in Casablanca and will do whatever it takes to get an exit visa. However, Major Strasser of the Gestapo has ordered Renault to keep him there. As tensions rise in Casablanca, Rick finds himself between his desire for profit and his growing sympathy for Laszlo's cause. With the arrival of Ilsa Lund, Laszlo's wife, and Rick's former lover, the stakes become even higher. Now, Rick must navigate a treacherous web of deceit and make a decision that could change the course of history. Rick and Laszlo meet because Rick is the person Ugarte meant to sell the letters to. Still, Ugarte must choose a different course of action now that he is in custody. When Rick reunites with Ilsa Lund, who accompanied him in Paris, some of his previous wounds return.
Wisecracks and epigrams are interspersed throughout the discourse, which blends the jaded and the cynical. The opening scenes are a ballet of humor. It is one of the most well-known and identifiable films in film history. With the turbulent backdrop of World War II, the romance is fast-paced and emotionally charged. As Ugarte contemplates his options in custody, he realizes that he must strategize and adapt to his new circumstances. As the story progresses, the film delves into sacrifice and moral ambiguity themes. The characters are forced to make difficult choices to survive in a world of uncertainty and danger. Their resilience and determination shine through despite their challenges, creating a gripping and thought-provoking narrative.
After switching to Captain Renault to highlight the fantastic conversation, the camera pans sideways again. Rick finally appears as the camera pans back to look at him again. Following a shot from Rick to Ilsa, the camera moves to a series of reverse-angle shots, with Rick first seen, then Ilsa, then Rick again, and finally Ilsa again. The other person's or the talker's face appeared as the camera panted. These camera movements conveyed subliminal messages. It was either bringing attention to the topic of discussion or stressing how important it is to pay attention to what people are saying. The camera sways back and forth during a talk. Therefore, the scene was intended to be dramatic. The camera's movement created a sense of tension and anticipation, mirroring the emotional intensity between Rick and Ilsa. The alternating shots also emphasized the back-and-forth nature of their conversation, heightening the audience's engagement with the scene.
There is more drama between Ilsa and Rick because of the scene's darkness. When Joe and Jerry, two Chicago musicians, see the Saint in the film Some Like It Hot, they decide to leave the city and avoid Spats Colombo, the mobster who is in charge. Heartbreak on Valentine's Day is an all-girl band playing in Florida, the only engagement they can find outside the city. Josephine and Daphne, the stand-in bassist and saxophonist, arrive at the railway station. As they step off the train, Josephine and Daphne are excited and nervous. The bustling station is filled with people from all walks of life, adding to their anticipation. They take a moment to gather their thoughts before embarking on this new chapter in their lives as members of an all-girl band. They love being around the girls, except for Sugar Kane Kowalczyk, who sings and plays the ukulele. Joe goes out of his way to win Daphne, even while billionaire Osgood Fielding III goes after Jerry.

Module 11 Assignment: Anatomy of a Scene
The movie I choose from list A is Casablanca and the movie from list B is Some Like It Hot. Casablanca will be the film I will be analyzing. In the film Casablanca when the Germans invaded Europe during World War II, they fled to America in search of safety. However, to get there, they would first need to travel to Casablanca, where they would then need to apply for departure permits, which are not very common. The most popular place in all of Casablanca right now is Rick's Cafe, managed by American immigrant Rick Blaine, who is also very cynical and for some reason can't go back there. It now appears that the papers two German messengers were transporting were stolen. Ugarte, a frequent customer of Rick's, gives him some letters that he plans to sell, but before he can, he is arrested for the murder of the couriers. Rick is informed by Captain Renault, the Chief of Police, who has no political allegiances, that Victor Laszlo, a leader of the Czechoslovak resistance, is currently in Casablanca and will stop at nothing to obtain an exit visa, but Renault has been told by Major Strasser of the Gestapo to keep Laszlo there. Since Rick was the person Ugarte intended to sell the letters to, Laszlo visits Rick to meet him. However, since Ugarte has been detained, he needs to take a different path. A few of Rick's old scars resurface when he meets Ilsa Lund, who was with him when he was in Paris. The conversation mixes the weary and the cynical; the initial sequences dance with comedy; and it includes wisecracks and epigrams throughout. The movie is one of the most famous and recognizable in cinematic history. It is a fast-paced, emotionally intense relationship set against the troubled background of World War II. The camera builds up again to emphasize the remarkable dialogue after cutting to Captain Renault; the camera was also from the side. At the very last second, Rick is shown as the camera follows up once more. Then the camera switches to a sequence of reverse angle views, starting with a shot from Rick to Ilsa, then back to Rick, then back to Ilsa, then back to Rick, and ultimately back to Ilsa again. Either the other individual or the talker's face came into view as the camera panned. These camera movements carried a subliminal message. It either meant highlighting the discussion or emphasizing the importance of hearing what is being said. I believed this scene was meant to be dramatic considering the camera is going back and forth during a conversation. The dimness of the scene increases the drama that is happening between Rick and Ilsa. In the movie Some Like It Hot there are two Chicago musicians named Joe and Jerry who want to leave the city and get away from the gangster responsible, Spats Colombo after they witness the Saint. Valentine's Day massacre. They need an engagement outside the city, but the only one they can find is in an all-girl band playing in Florida. As the substitute bass and saxophonist, Josephine, and Daphne, arrive at the train station. Except for Sugar Kane Kowalczyk, who sings and plays the ukulele, they undoubtedly appreciate being around the females. While Osgood Fielding III, a billionaire, woos Jerry/Daphne, Joe specifically sets out to charm her.

If you've watched any of the NCIS shows or Criminal Minds, chances are you've seen an episode directed by Diana Valentine. She stepped behind the camera for NCIS: New Orleans for the first time for Sunday's episode.
"It was great fun. I got to work with a drone ... and the Coast Guard," she told TV Insider. "There was quite a bit of action in it, so that was all great."
"Monolith" will see NCIS racing to find a missing woman and her abductors — Sebastian (Rob Kerkovich) is injured when he attempts to prevent the kidnapping but fails — but also offer a peek into the personal life of the newest member of the team, Agent Carter (Charles Michael Davis).
"He was great," Valentine said of working with Davis and added that she likes exploring new additions on shows. "You can have more fun with it because the character's not so well-defined as the characters in the show for all those other years."
Tumblr media
She also directed recent episodes of NCIS and NCIS: Los Angeles, and for both, she got to do a bit of romance. "I hadn't really gotten to do so much [of that] before," she shared. "I did a little bit on Better Angels, but that was much more of an emotional episode than [LA's] 'The Circle' was." That episode brought Anna (Bar Paly) back into Callen's (Chris O'Donnell) life.
And she'd served as a script supervisor on LA, allowing her to have "a shorthand" with the cast and crew. "You have a relationship that's already built in, you have a trust that's built in. It's a lot of fun," she explained. "There's not any kind of having to get to know somebody, which you do when you direct other shows, so it's like being with your family."
She also had fun with NCIS' "Ephemera," as did everyone involved. "All the actors got to play something other than they were normally playing, so they all embraced it, they all got into it, and I think they all really enjoyed just the chance to do something different after so many years," Valentine said.
She also knows that a group of fans rooting for a romance between certain characters enjoyed it. "Even though it's not Bishop and Torres getting together — because they're playing Art and Annie — it was great for the fans to see the romance and the flirting between them," she added.
Tumblr media
In directing procedurals, she's shooting what she likes. "I enjoy watching [the genre]," Valentine shared. "I like mysteries. When I read books, which has been a lot lately, I read thrillers and mysteries and all that kind of stuff."
She's also "a horror genre buff," which was why she enjoyed her work on Criminal Minds. "Along with the straight procedural of it, you also got to do the serial killing aspect of it," she explained. "You got to do a little movie within the procedural when you were dealing with that part of the story."
She directed seven episodes of the CBS procedural that ended its run after 15 years in February, including one in the final season ("Ghost"). Doing so was "bittersweet," she admitted, "because we did my last episode tacked onto Season 14, so knowing it was going to be over, working with such great people and great actors was very sad."

Swedish facts- holidays edition
Here's the third installment of my swedish facts series (not counting the first one)
This will focus in Swedish holidays and traditions including more royal family focused ones.
🎅 Christmas
Celebrated on the 24th (Christmas eve) often with family. You commonly eat lunch, watch Kalle Anka (From all of us to all of you) eat dinner and open gifts. Every family have their own traditions.
Common foods are ham, herring, ribs, meatballs, jansons frestelse, risgrynsgröt (porridge made of rice) and cured salmon.
🎆 New Years
Pretty straight forward. Often celebrated with friends. You eat fancy food, drink champagne and toast at midnight. Every year there's a celebration from Skansen in Stockholm which is broadcasted in TV live. There are music performances from different artists and every year a special person is chosen to read the poem "ring out, wild bells" by Alfred Tennyson. It's read just before midnight and if the timing is right it finishes just as the church bell starts ringing in the new year with It's twelve rings.
💕 Alla Hjärtans dag - Valentine's day
This is not a huge holiday in Sweden but if you are a couple you might go out for dinner or cook something special. You might give roses or gifts but it's not a huge thing. As a kid we made gift cards for friends and family. It's like in the US but toned down.
🍩 Fettisdagen - fatty tuesday
It's a Christian tradition that has it's origins in fasting. I think 47 days before easter? Before fasting you ate to be able to withstand the fasting and from there fettisdagen has become a very celebrated and anticipated tradition where you eat a special kind of baked good. It's a wheat bun with cardamom that's filled with whipped cream and almond mass/paste.
Tumblr media
🧇 Våffeldagen -waffle day
Celebrated the 25th of March. It as Christian roots but nowdays we juat eat waffles.
Tumblr media
🐣Easter
Easter is a bit all over the place.
Apart from the Christian easter traditions we also dress up like påskkärringar (witches) and kids and over their drawings to their neighbours and often gets candy in return. Parents might by eggs that that they fill with candy that their kids then get. Some kids have to search for theirs.
We eat alot of eggs but also herring.
🔥Valborg- celebrated 30th of April
It's celebrated to welcome spring. You light huge bonfires in the evening and in some cities Valborg is a huge thing. In Uppsala and Lund for instance. There are choirs performing and speeches and poems being held/read. It's a huge deal among uni students but also an appreciated tradition along families. It's just a different kind of celebration 😂.
Valborg is also the current kings birthday.
Tumblr media
🌸 Första Maj
The day after Valborg. It's the "working class'" holiday and super important for many people. May day in the UK. Many speeches are being held, especially by the labour party and other parties on the left. There are also many demonstrations.
🤰🏾Mother’s day
No need to explained. Celebrated the last sunday of May.
🇸🇪 Nationaldagen - our national day - June 6
I would say that it's not as big as in many other countries but it's still celebrated a bit. The royal family is always involved. You have the day off but like I said I wouldn't call it a very important holiday for most people. Some people dress up in tradtional clothing though.
Tumblr media
☀️ Midsommar
Perhaps the most swedish holiday/tradition of them all. Celebrated with families and/or friends. You commonly have a barbecue, eat the traditional foods like the new potatoes and again herring.
Strawberries are common to eat for dessert. Either the way they are with ice cream or whipped cream or strawberry cake.
You dance around the may pole (mostly kids and their parents) and you make flower crowns and dress nicely. Some wear their traditional clothing like on our national day.
It's not as crazy as the movie.
Tumblr media
🦞 Kräftskiva - cray fish party
Usually held in August. You eat crayfish and wear weird hats.
Tumblr media
🥨 Kanalbullens dag - cinnamon bun day.
Celebrated 4th of October. We celebrate the amazingness that is cinnamon buns. Not the weird ones with frosting.

🎃 Halloween - 31 October
Not a huge holiday. Mostly celebrated among kids that go trick or treating (still not a huge thing) and students that likes to party.
🕯Alla Helgona - All saints day. Celebrated Saturday between the 31st of October and 6th of November.
We remember the people in our lives that are no longer with us by visiting their graves and light candles at the graveyard.
It's a beautiful holiday.

👨‍👧Father's day - pretty straight forward. Celebrated the second Sunday in November.
⭐️ Advent
Celebrated the 4 Sundays before Christmas eve. We light a candle every sunday leading up to christmas.

👸🏿 Lucia
YR did a good way showing it and it's basically about celebrating light. There's a performance done by a choir and one of the women is dressed like lucia.

I was going to include traditions with the royal family but this post is already so long. If people are interested I could make one revolving around the royal family and the traditions that they are very involved with.

What about each of the Fallout 4 companions' favorite songs? Not limited to what's on the radio in the Commonwealth, but maybe still within the usual musical era the games showcase?
FO4 Companions Favorite Songs:
TW:
Some of these songs deal with topics such as mentions of suicide, depression and drugs(this is mostly just a warning for Hancock’s song list and a bit for Caits)
Nick Valentine:
-Genre; Jazz, Rock, Country, Disco????(I Genuinely can’t decide) I personally think he’d like all types but his most favorite would probably be Jazz as a safe bet.
-Song(s); Somebody to Love by Queen, Heart Ache by the Number by Guy Mitchell, Fly Me to the Moon by Frank Sinatra
Cait:
-Genre; 100% Metal Head, Metal Music all the way. It gets her pumped up when she needs the extra boost of excitement.
-Song(s); There’s a lot of songs she would choose, two notable songs she would probably like would be Angel of Death by Slayer or Back in Black by AC/DC
John Hancock:
-Genre; As much as I would love to say Jazz I feel like if he found out what the Alternative/Indie was, he would absolutely love it.
-Song(s); God there’s a lot of songs I think He would like, however these are the ones I think he’d like the most... Everybody Gets High by MISSO, Don’t Threaten Me with a Good Time by Panic! At The Disco, My Strange Addiction by Billie Eilish and Broken by Lund
Deacon:
-Genre; pop, but he’ll never admit it, he’ll always say Rock but he knows damn well pop music is his absolute favorite.
-Song; Bad Romance by Lady Gaga. Sorry, I don’t make the rules.
Curie:
-Genre; Electronic Dance Music. She just enjoys it, it makes her very giddy and she gets more pep in her step if she listens to this genre at any time.
-Song; Almost every Daft Punk song, but would probably have to choose Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger.
Porter Gage:
-Genre; A big, BIG Rock fan! He would probably put MacCready to shame by how much he, himself loves Rock music. He could probably name almost every popular pre war Rock band without even flinching. Absolute beast.
-Song(s); In reality he probably couldn’t choose for the life of him, but if he had to he would have to say either, We Will Rock You by Queen or Smells Like Teen Spirit by Nirvana.
X6-88:
-Genre; Is quite in love with Jazz as a whole, but also a bit of Rock, he always thought that music was a waste of time until Sole introduced him to music, specifically Jazz and Rock.
-Song(s); I Don’t Want to Set the World on Fire by The Ink Spots and Paint it Black by The Rolling Stones.
Codsworth:
-Genre; absolutely loves the classical genre, but he’s recently been getting into Blues and Jazz because of how much those genres remind him of pre war.
-What a Wonderful World by Louis Armstrong, he would always play it for baby Shaun so that Shaun could fall asleep, worked ever time.
Preston:
-Genre; I think Preston also doesn’t have a favorite genre, I think he’d enjoy country but I also thing he’d enjoy a bit of Rhythm and Blues. He probably isn’t picky though
-Song(s); Buttercup by Jack Stauber, The Other Side of Paradise by Glass Animals.
MacCready:
-Genre; Rock ‘n’ Roll baby!! It’s been his favorite sense he was the mayor of Little Lamp Light
-Song; The Wanderer by Dion, it reminds him of home back in the Capital wasteland, it was also his first introduction into Rock music and he’ll never forget it.
Danse:
-Genre; Country and Disco, I am not elaborating
-Song; Funky Town by Lipps inc. and Dancing Queen by ABBA I don’t know why but I enjoy these songs and I think he’d enjoy them to.
Piper:
-Genre; Hiphop and Alternative/Indie, but she refuses that she likes Alternative/Indie so that Hancock doesn’t get all smug.
-Song(s); Walk This Way by Run-D.M.C., Hayloft by Mother Mother.

Expense Account, First Page...
On February 11, 1949, Yours Truly, Johnny Dollar premiered on CBS and kicked off the career of “America’s fabulous freelance insurance investigator.” Dollar traveled the world investigating cases of insurance fraud until 1962. Each mystery was narrated by Johnny as he itemized his expense account for his bosses at “the home office.” The series aired up until the end of the Golden Age of Radio in 1962, and it remains one of the most beloved detective programs of the era.
What made the show work?  The format of the show is a great hook - Dollar narrates the story as he itemizes his expense account for his employers.  As the case progresses, another expense is rattled off.  This was played up for humorous effect in the show’s early days, leading to a frequent announcer tag line - “At insurance investigation, he’s only an expert.  At making out his expense account, he’s an absolute genius!“  Dollar was sharp, a bit cynical, and had brains to match his brawn.
But in his first several years on the air, Johnny Dollar was a good - but not great - radio detective.  There was little about the show to distinguish it from the sea of detective shows cluttering the airwaves.  Three different actors (Charles Russell, Edmond O'Brien, and John Lund) played Dollar between 1949 and 1954.  (Dick Powell was actually the first to play Johnny Dollar in a 1948 audition program.  Before the show went to series, Powell opted to star in Richard Diamond, Private Detective on NBC.)  The insurance investigation angle provided a different flavor for the show, but those early shows weren’t quite in the same league as Sam Spade or Philip Marlowe.  The show actually left the airwaves in 1954, and Johnny Dollar might have ended up as a radio footnote had it not been for a revamped series that returned to the air in 1955.
Under the direction of Jack Johnstone, Johnny Dollar was reinvented as a five-night-a-week 15 minute serial.  Johnstone was a veteran radio writer and director who previously brought Buck Rogers and Superman to radio. Just before he took the helm of Johnny Dollar, he served as producer and director for the outstanding NBC western series The Six Shooter, which brought Jimmy Stewart to weekly radio as its star.  Johnstone served as producer and director of the new series, and he frequently provided scripts.  With 75 minutes instead of 30 for stories every week, Johnstone and his fellow writers could deliver complex plots with plenty of twists and turns and nuanced characters with more depth than the usual supporting players in a weekly detective show.
But talent behind the scenes is only part of the story.  Johnny Dollar’s renaissance owes as much to the man in front of the microphone - a strong, dynamic actor who breathed life and a personality into the detective.  And it was an actor who was no stranger to solving crimes on the airwaves.
Bob Bailey was fresh off a run as private eye George Valentine in Let George Do It when he was cast as Dollar.  He sank his teeth into the king-size scripts, and his performance fleshed out the character in a way that the previous actors had never quite managed to nail down.  His Johnny Dollar would more often than not get too involved in his cases, and he might fall too hard for a female suspect.  He loved to fish, and his clients might exploit that to persuade him to take a dangerous job in a far-off locale where he could be promised a good catch.  He was unpredictable, funny, and dangerous.  In the early years, Johnny Dollar was just a radio detective. With Jack Johnstone’s words and Bob Bailey’s voice, he joined the ranks of Marlowe and Spade, characters with long histories on the page behind them.
The series continued in the serial format until 1956 when it returned to 30 minutes once a week.  While the individual shows may not have always been as rich as the five-part stories, Bailey’s performance remained strong.  He remained in the role until 1960, when CBS shut down its West Coast radio operations and moved its dramatic productions to New York.  The show continued for another two seasons; Jack Johnstone continued to provide scripts but was replaced as director.  Bob Readick and Mandel Kramer starred as Dollar until he turned in his last expense account on the final night of network radio on September 30, 1962.
Nearly all of the episodes of the show survive, and while each actor brought something unique to the character, it is Bailey’s Johnny Dollar that stands head and shoulders above them all.  His wry humor, his hard edge, and his world-weary cynicism come through in every line of his performance, and there are years of episodes for today’s audiences to rediscover and enjoy.
Check out this episode!
