(Part 1!)
Now Wimbledon has begun, I wanted to share some of my favourite photos of Bertie playing tennis!
When he was still The Duke of York, he participated in a doubles match at Wimbledon with his mentor & friend, Louis Greig (above). Bertie was extremely anxious and asked to play on one of the outer courts, as opposed to Centre Court, to keep attention away from him. A compromise was eventually made for Court 2, where there was still a considerable crowd.
One spectator recalled that, ‘The Duke of York was very nervous and couldn’t play at all, at times lashing at the ball with his racquet…”
The Prince and Louis Greig lost the match in straight sets: 6-1, 6-3, 6-2 to Herbert Roper Barret and Arthur Gore - both considerably older and more experienced than the then 30-year-old Bertie! Some exasperated people in the crowd even yelled out that he should try playing with ‘the other hand’ (i.e. his right hand, as Bertie played tennis left handed). It is likely that his anxieties and quick temper —usually aimed at himself!— affected his game that day.
In reality, Bertie was, in fact, an extremely talented tennis player!
He had previously won the RAF doubles competition in 1920 (pictured above!) and when at White Lodge, he loved playing tennis with Elizabeth in the mornings, before breakfast.
The ladies’ Wimbledon champion, Suzanne Lenglen, watched Bertie’s match on Court 2 that day and said that, ‘with plenty of practice’ he would have ‘the makings of a champion’. Nonetheless, the whole Wimbledon experience traumatised the sensitive Duke, and he never played a game in public again.

P.S. Sorry I've been very absent from this page! I'm so, so busy with work :( But I promise to catch up on all your questions, and I have a ton of Bertie to share when I get more time!
“Albert enjoyed having a second family life. He grew very attached to Phyllis, or Phiggie, as he called her, and would wander into the woods and fields when at Sandringham for the weekend to find jay feathers to send to her, sometimes writing two or three times in a single day. Phyllis provided some welcome maternal affection, while Louis was always the father figure urging Albert on, pushing him to have fun, to test himself and to embrace the opportunities before him. And Albert did gain confidence.”
- from The King Maker: The Man Who Saved George VI by Geordi Greig
Just my extra two cents: while I really enjoyed this book and its insights into the royal family (some of the Queen Mary stuff is great), I do sometimes feel that Louis Greig is given too much credit for Albert’s personal development. The success of their relationship was not owed to Louis alone - it was also because of Albert’s character; he was willing to listen and he worked very hard on himself. Almost too much so! He did credit Louis with "saving his life" (it was Greig who convinced George V to let his son have surgery for the ulcer that debilitated him for three years) but I think he was way too modest in that way; he always wanted to credit others for his own successes. But that's just my own opinion. No doubt, the relationship between Louis and Albert was an important one and Greig was the right man for the job.
And I just love the sweetness of this photo of Bertie & Phiggie! 🥰🤗🪶🎾

I make period drama style gifs for free. If you use gif packs, please like and reblog them. Most of my projects are already ready, but every day I post no more than 190 gifs. Because that was the reason why my previous account was blocked.
I tried to make gif packs in a format more familiar to you with a link to a separate page. However, unfortunately, I did not succeed because of the large format of high-quality gifs.
I want to explain about color processing. Usually, I improve the contrast, brightness and saturation, but leave the naturalness of the film. I don't make the contours too sharp because I like the aesthetic of it looking like a natural image.

The future King George VI takes to the court at Wimbledon Tennis Championships. Partnered by his long-time friend and mentor Sir Louis Greig, he faces AW Gore and H Roper Barrett in the first round. Footage released in 1926
Prince Albert, as he was known at the time, and his friend Major Louis Greig getting prepared to fly to France. These photographs were taken in 1918 at Hendon (formerly a civilian flying school, which was commandeered by the War Office in 1916). Bertie gained his RAF pilot wings on July 31st 1919, becoming the first member of the British Royal Family to qualify - and to achieve this despite actually having a phobia of flying & heights was in itself rather courageous! I do also think he looks somewhat anxious, all cocooned in that big padded coat, gauntlets and helmet. Still adorable, though :)
Fourth photo: they’re just about visible in the cockpit, but the aircraft nerd in me mostly wanted to show off that biplane bomber, a Handley Page O/400, oh my!
"it's a combination shortbread cookie and aldehydic floral!"
The "shortbread cookie" note is basically the same biscuit-y stylized vanilla as Givenchy Pi, but the decidedly unsweet, perfumey, floral top gives Dune more panache.
That top note is a dry gray in tonality while the sweet bottom is beige; apparently the inspiration was originally not desert dunes but the cold beaches of Normandy, and I can see it. Gray sky above, beige sand beneath.
Lavender's not in the listed notes, but there is something lavender-esque about that gray floral, a dried-sachet quality.
Luca Turin considers it "bleak" and "unsmiling" and "unsettling", and I think I see what he's talking about, but really to me it just has a "suburban mom" aura. (This mom actually irons her shirts and plans trips to the mall with military precision.)
I'm fascinated by the balance of this thing -- how something so overtly sweet and vanillic can be simultaneously so cool and dry. Over time, the "top" and "bottom" blend smoothly into a buzzy uniform greige, like "stone"-colored chinos.
Like L'Eau D'Issey, Dune is a 90's phenomenon: a deceptively big and loud composition on a supposedly "subtle, minimalist" theme.
L'Eau d'Issey is aiming at "transparent" but is actually an aggro white floral paired with an equally aggro aquatic note.
Dune is aiming at "neutral beige", which, as Coco Chanel said, is usually restful; but Dune is built out of the dynamic tension between laundry briskness, mossy-dusty dryness, and powdery sweetness. It's an alert beige, an active beige.
Does that mean Dune can get annoying? Yes.
I'm not a huge fan of this 90's synthetic-vanilla thing to begin with;
and a perfume vibrating with potential energy is inherently a little annoying. it never quite relaxes.
But it's impressive. I keep smelling my wrist to see if it's collapsed into a "normal" powdery-vanilla thing, and nope! the structure still stands! still airy, still dry, still steel-reinforced and freshly polished!

Diorly beloved: the Christian path - a photo essay by u/Mickleborough
Diorly beloved: the Christian path - a photo essay
This is how I think Meghan tried to get her bunion, I mean foot (cheap shot acknowledged) in the Dior.Daniel Martin claims to be one of Meghan’s dear friends; at least, he’s her makeup artist. He’s also a Dior Brand Ambassador. He created the look for her wedding. Flawless! 2018.Perhaps this, plus the minimum £200,000 / $256,000 she spent at Dior whilst a (cough) working member of the Royal Family meant that Dior took her calls after Megxit.Meghan resplendent in Dior at the British Ambassador’s in Morocco. A bit overdressed for a reception, really. The first public acknowledgement by Dior after Megxit was when Meghan appeared at the virtue-signalling Global Citizens Live concert in New York in September 2021. She carried a bag which had her initials on it: DSSOS, for DucheSSOfSussex. Clever!Dior Instagram: ‘Meghan Markle is the epitome of Dior elegance, as she steps out with her Lady DLite bag…’Apparently the bag sold out (it’s Dior, it’d have sold out anyway). Did this get her proper clothes at the late Queen’s Platinum Jubilee Service of Thanksgiving in June 2022?It’s literally (but not technically) an A-line. Dior Instagram: ‘…Meghan…celebrated the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee in Dior with a greige set composed of a made to measure trench coat, wool skirt, and silk shirt from the…Spring-Summer 2022 collection…’Meghan consolidated her position by wearing RTW Dior a month later, in July 2022, not allowing Glo Steinem to escape:You caught me! Dior Bermuda shops. Then sadly Queen Elizabeth II died. Why didn’t Dior didn’t provide Meghan with an outfit for the funeral in September 2022?Admittedly it’d have been tasteless merching it on Dior Instagram. Nonetheless Meghan did wear Dior: a hat, the black Odile to the white Odette worn at the Platinum Jubilee Thansgiving.Meghan and her stupid sun hat, compared to the headwear of the Duchess of Cornwall, the Duchess of Cambridge, Princess Charlotte, and the Duchess of Wessex.I’m guessing Meghan just ordered it from the milliner (Stephen Jones x Dior) - it doesn’t look like Dior took any trouble over it. And that’s pretty much all we’ve seen of Meghan in Dior. Did Dior’s interest wane? Or was in proportion to the public event that Meghan appeared at? Say if she’d turned up at the King’s coronation in May 2023, she might’ve been dressed by them; Harry certainly was. This suggests some low-key interest shown in Meghan by Dior: go to a high-profile event, and we might dress you. Collecting a Women of Vision award from the Ms Foundation doesn’t count (hence the last-season covering). Query whether the Ripple of Hope award in December 2022 scored Meghan a freebie gown from Louis Vuitton, which is owned by the same corporation as Dior.‘I’m sorry, you caught me in the shower.’There were reports of Harry showing up in London in 2023 wearing Dior shirts or suits or some such thing - keeping the Dior connection warm perhaps? And based on all this, Meghan hoped that she and Dior could come to some more formal arrangement…No more posts with bad Dior puns, promise. Unless it’s begging for it.
