I’m just wondering, how do you guys feel about Lola Ya Bonobo supporting cryptocurrency? I’ll admit that I’m not super well versed in the affects of cryptocurrency but from what I know/researched it has a large negative impact on the environment, which makes me wonder how that fits with conservation and protecting the environment

While I am anti-cryptocurrency I am not gonna give any charity flak for taking it as a form of donation. Lola Ya Bonobo does incredible work, and I doubt anyone using crypto to donate to them is mining crypto specifically for that purpose. While I hope crypto ceases to be mined and falls out of use, I would much rather existing money in cryptocurrency be donated to somewhere like LyB that will do good with it.

thanks i try :3 i'm not really a super positive or optimistic person naturally but i feel very driven to help people i care about and express my love :)

anyway

primate organizations i recommend:

pan african sanctuary alliance - pasa is a great directory for conservation efforts in africa, so if you want more places to look at, definitely look at their website. i would say any organization in their alliance can be trusted to adequately provide for the animals in their care.

lola ya bonobo - lola ya bonobo/friends of bonobos is the only!! bonobo rewilding program in the whole world and the only sanctuary that's specifically dedicated to bonobos

dian fossey gorilla fund - this one is specifically dedicated to the protection of mountain gorillas as well as research of the surrounding habitat. they've also done some substantial research into one of my favorite monkeys, the golden monkey (cercopithecus kandti).

gorilla doctors - the gorilla doctors do veterinary field work to maintain the health of wild mountain gorillas and eastern lowland gorillas. they also work to address human and domestic animal health in the area in order to help maintain gorilla health.

the orangutan project - the orangutan project works with various organizations in indonesia for the conservation of orangutans. one of the organizations they fund is the bos foundation which is a personal favorite :) the smithsonian show "orangutan jungle school" is about bos!

duke lemur center - duke lemur center is a research center and conservation effort for lemurs (of which they house 200 btw). all of their research is minimally invasive and not harmful to the animals. they kind of do a lot of stuff so it's a little hard to summarise... also binx lives here............. i love binx.......

vervet forest - the vervet monkey foundation is basically exactly what it sounds like. they rescue pet monkeys and laboratory monkeys and give them a better life. one thing that's particularly interesting about them is their foster mom program where they give orphaned babies a monkey family :)

lwiro primate rehab center - lwiro works to rehabilitate all kinds of primates impacted by the illegal (and unethical) pet trade. this means they primarily work with orphaned primates and primates with significant physical and psychological trauma

tacugama - tacugama works on preservation of wildlife in sierra leone. they're pretty famous i don't really know what to say about them except that they care for a buttload of chimps

fauna foundation - the fauna foundation the only chimpanzee sanctuary in canada and it rehabilitates and provides a safe place for chimps traumatized by the pet trade and laboratories. plus they have a nature reserve that's part of their conservation effort. shout out to sue ellen

monkey haven - primate rescue center i'm really just mentioning because xhabu lives there and he's like a celebrity to me. like they do good work but i just really love xhabu

Bonobo channels on youtube

So I managed to find a few channels with multiple bonobo videos. Bonobos, throughout life, incorporate sex into feeding, play, conflict resolution, friendship, etc, so heads up for a lot of that. they also have inventive positions. also: when they’re noisy they’re so squeaky! cute lil and big squeaks, squeals, high shouts...

morena angeloni is the first one i’ll go through.

the ones with the most sex are the ones titled giovani, medicina Api e cuccioli. Banane Api e cuccioli . one is mostly the younger ones rubbing their genitals on the eldest male eg back, rump, genitals including 2 at a time. he’s very good natured about being pestered with humps and mounts :P

also has good illustrations of why i really resist suggestion that their use of food during sex resembles/is a form of prostitution. often sex is engaged in “for food,” but they may already both have the same kind of food, and sex just makes sharing occur sooner and easier than it would without it. without, they’d just have to wait for minutes while indicating they’re requesting food/being close. sometimes it’s not an exchange, but “theft.” it’s also understood that one needs to share, especially during/after sex, and the food haver can be “meh” about it or refuse because they know they’ll have to share. elder females, even when males have possession of food, have first dibs and authority over food. females also take food from males mouths and hands, and when a small group of females come over to food, the males take some food, moving away with a bunch in their hands, and leave most of it to them [eg this study]

Cuccioli da Api 2 has some super cute playing, esp when one is up in a branch and the other is still on the ground

Banane Api e cuccioli good instances of the squeakdom. a lot of mounting/genital-genital contact too. at one point, i found myself wiggling my bum, shoulders too because it’s cute and funny [one of them wiggling against the other to rub genitals together happens about a minute in] :P

In medicazione API the adolescent is getting medicine for his scarring/injuries, letting them apply it and eating, getting some pets. A littler one with some scarring/injuries comes over, not trusting the women much. It’s mostly women that work with bonobos as bonobos trust men far less, and usually fear them at first. Women can become part of the group too, but men can’t. Some of them have survived human male poachers killing their moms, but even the others instinctively fear men. [They also are afraid of doors, the wee bubbies. Vanessa Woods, de Waal, etc talk about this fear of men. They identify sex in humans easily.] The smaller one covers him to protect him, staying close, moving away a bit and coming back. “I’m keeping my eye on them. Are you ok?” kind of thing. They wind up having sex [mostly/all outercourse] a few brief times. Soothing anxiety is another use of sex.

Nursey game: squeaky babies, fighting over water bottles, making up with an embrace, playing on a trampoline, rolling around, piggybacking on humans, three waddling off in a cuddle pile

they’re so... guileless. there’s a universal innocence about it all, even when they’re imps.

More Ikoto! At 3 months old, Ikoto is the youngest orphan to be cared for at Lola Ya Bonobo. Dependant on human caretakers at the moment, they are raising him to return to the wild when he is old enough.

This is a silly question, but could giving bonobos fertility treatments help them to not go extinct?

Nope, fertility isn't the issue. Even if it were as simple as a single pill (any human who has had fertility treatments will tell you it is far from that simple) the main issue is human intervention in the form of deforestation and environmental destruction, as well as poaching.

This is particularly devastating as bonobos reproduce slowly-- where some animals are able to have litters of young with short gestation periods and quick recovery time to be able to get pregnant again, great apes are different. Bonobos (and other great apes) typically only carry one fetus at a time, and gestation takes 240 days from conception to birth. After an infant is born, another won't be conceived until the infant is no longer entirely dependant.

Consequently, even a very fertile bonobo would only have a child once every few years, which is very little in the face of their already small territories being reduced and their populations being killed. What will save bonobos will be protected forests where they can live unharmed, financial stability for the people who live close to wild bonobo populations so they don't have to resort to poaching to survive, and supporting sanctuaries like Lola Ya Bonobo where orphaned bonobos are raised to be able to return to the wild and have children of their own.
