Conifer resin ducts, which are found in the cortex and phloem, contain a mixture of diverse terpenoids, including bicyclic monoterpenes such as α-pinene, monocyclic terpenes like limonene and terpinolene, and tricyclic sesquiterpines, including longifolene, caryophyllene, and δ-cadinene, as well as resin acids, which are released immediately upon damage to herbivores (Figure 23.11).

There’s an episode of Avatar: the Last Airbender where, early in his redemption arc, Zuko gets really physically ill. Iroh say that this is because he’s undergoing a metamorphosis, a change in his fundamental nature, and becoming his true self rather than the version of himself imposed by his father.
And although I’m not physically ill, I am experiencing considerable amounts of emotional distress, and a few persistent physical symptoms, which I think indicate that I’m undergoing a quite similar experience of fundamental change. I need to express that, and discuss with myself and the ether how tiring and terrifying it’s been.
Because I have disowned my mother. And that has caused me huge relief, but with it comes the inevitable process of understanding what the purpose was of her control over me. Because she never pushed me into being a doctor or a lawyer, or even a chemist, or any of the other things parents often wish their child will do. She never even really applied particular pressure that we be wealthy or successful. But I think what I’ve realised she wanted to push me into was to be normal.
And I’ve had to think very much since she left about who I am, particularly in the context of my gender, sexuality, neurodivergence and weight. Because previously my attitude towards all, I think, was primarily concerned with being ‘normal’ about it, with the avoidance of being truly queer and visibly neurodivergent and unashamedly fat, and a lot of that is from her.
When I think about my gender, for example, the realisation of not being cisgender was a massive comfort to me; I cried tears of relief when I finally realised that I didn’t need to be a man anymore. But ever since then, aside from popping ‘he/they’ in a few places, I haven’t done much about it or spoken to many people about it. I thought a lot about the concept of not being a man but not really about the concept of being non-binary, and certainly not about the concept of being transgender. Because although being a man has been back-breaking, it is familiar.
Now, when I think about the other aspects of my life, I can see many of the same things happening. When my partner was here, I started forming a queer vision of my life that was so clear. And now that he isn’t, even though it’s been mere weeks, that vision has waned, and I’ve settled into my uncomfortable but familiar place in life, embedded amongst the fatphobic neurotypical cisgender heterosexuals, worrying about my career and even trying to bend my relationship into monogamous patterns that it cannot, would not and should not bend into. Because although this old version of myself and my life is punishing to me, although staying in it requires huge amounts of effort, that is what is familiar to me.
This is all motivated by a fundamental fear of exclusion. Exclusion is quite different from rejection, I think, which is an altogether quite easy affair; exclusion is about watching from the sidelines. Assimilation, as is familiar to me and as was so encouraged by my mother, is an effort to never quite be excluded, either from cisgender heterosexual (and fatphobic and neurotypical) society or from queer society. The fundamental hallmark of efforts to assimilate, however, is to never quite be included in either of those societies either. The fundamental values of those societies are in opposition to one another, and one cannot occupy both simultaneously. Therefore, to choose one society necessitates one’s exclusion from the other.
This is the great leap I have not made, the metamorphosis I’m approaching but have not completed. Without pressure from my mother, and with encouragement from my partner (who promises the glimpse of a better and more queer life), the discomfort of assimilation has become excruciating. It makes me scream and weep and walk into the lashing rain.
I must therefore now reject the life of assimilation that my mother and I built together for myself, and all of its familiar comforts. I must instead be who I am, I must be queer and autistic and fat. I must scream and weep and walk into the lashing rain when I am content to do so. I must find and bathe in the comforts of being myself and of being with my fellow people, of joining queer society and working with my siblings to establish queer utopia. With this, I will be excluded from the society I was raised in. But that exclusion instead will be blissful. The fever will break, the thirst will abide, I will rise from my slumber and embrace a new family as myself.

Suzanne Simard, an ecologist at the University of British Columbia, has found that there are family relationships between trees and that, through their roots and fungus, they communicate with each other and shuffle resources around. Author and researcher Diana Beresford Kroeger has argued that the abundant aerosols that trees emit, such as terpenes and limonenes, are natural antibiotics, antivirals and chemo-preventatives that help keep the natural world – including humans – healthy.
