In defense of Captain Kyōraku vs Coyote Starrk

I recently saw a creator say that Zaraki Kenpachi would have been a better match for Stark than Shunsui due to the parallel between Yachiru and Lillinette, which is fair but I want to throw my support behind the fight Kubo decided to give us.

My first watch through Bleach, I was underwhelmed by Stark. He didn't have Barragons hax or Ulqiorra's showing and he was the only espada besides Aaroniero who was beaten without bankai. Upon reading the manga, however, Starrk has come to be my favorite of the espada due to Kubo's great characterization.

Starrk's backstory starts in Hueco Mundo, after he split his soul in two, creating the separate characters that are Starrk and Lilynette. He did this to cure his lonliness as no other hollow could retain their reishi body in the presence of his immense power. Eventually he's approached by Aizen who stretches out his hand to Starrk, asking him to be his ally.

The espada contains nine other hollows that are able to withstand Starrks spiritual pressure, finally giving Starrk a shot at friendship. He is one of four vastolords, along with Barragan, Harribel, and Ulquiorra, who's aspects of death are aging, sacrifice and emptiness. There seems to be a rift between the vasto lords and adjuchas who have more primal aspects atributed to their persons; despair, destruction, ecstacy, insanity, greed, and wrath. We see Nel's relationship with Nnoitra and Ulquiorra's with Grimmjow. in both of these we're shown the gap in power, the lack of regard and relatability a more human vasto lord shows to an adjuchas. Stark and Ulquirra have an added degree of seperation being naturally occuring Arrancars.

Jushiro and shunsui are among the only people that Starrk would have been able to see as an equal. Starrk as the espada representing lonliness in death, didn't need the soul-king killed; he did not need soul society destroyed and he especially did not need the captain of the 8th company dead. Starrk even tries to get the captain to pretend to fight till the battle is over, a scene reminiscent of Kyōraku asking Chad to stay for tea till the end of the Ryoka invasion in the Soul Society arc.

Starrk is so powerful, that in Hueco Mundo, no one could even approach him until Aizen, and even when he did, it must not have been lost on Starrk that he was but a tool for the Soul reaper. The only time in Karakura town where Starrk is touchable by anyone besides Kyōraku is when he's jumped by Love and Rose taking advantage of him mourning the death of Barragan.

Kyōraku approaches Starrk with a calmness he must've only seen before in Aizen. (and would most definetly not have seen in Kenpachi) I can't think of a scenario in which Starrk would have had to fight before this encounter. The captain and the espada continue to surprise each other with their speed, strength, and battle instincts. They are feeling each other out as one would a new dancing partner.

There is a reason that Lilynette is Starrk's counterpart. She is bratty, uncooperative and ignorantly unhindered by the gap in power between Ukitake and herself. Despite the indifference the captain shows to her attacks, and the ease with which he swats away her cero, she does not stop trying to reach him. She is the face of Starrks desparation and lack of opportunity for growth.

Starrk's ability to split his soul is how we get both lillenette and the wolves used to defeat Love and Rose. When Starrk wants to get serious he absorbs Lillinette back into himself.The wolves he sends out do not return to him. He himself cannot cure his own lonliness, forced to retreat into himself when push comes to shove, and self destructing when that is not enough.

Kyōraku's shikai forces his opponent to follow the rules of children's games. Who better to come up against him than the man who's lonely, unfulfilled inner child is shown to us. Bleach is full of characters who blur the line between battle and sport; Kenpachi, White, Ikkaku, Grimmjow etc. Starrk is less expressive than these guys but for the first time ever although for a criminally short time, he and lilynette are able to experience high stakes, forced to get creative, and most importantly, they Play.

weird bleach headcanons : primera edition

context: today is a Shitty Brain Day and I require some measure of comfort. This entails my beloved blorbos Deserving Good Things. Who deserves good things? Coyote fuckin’ Starrk that’s who. (If you disagree, summon me to the nearest Tim Hortons parking lot. You know what to do)

In another life, in a more modern AU if you will, Coyote Starrk is basically a wholesome cryptid. Think Keanu Reeves but less famous, more lazy, and lonely but also incredibly fucking kind as a result of it. He is the guy who gets social media threads made about him cause so many people run into him during their shitty days like a communal stray puppy that everyone on the school route pets and leaves treats for because holy shit its a dog guys, dogs make any shitty day better. Except he’s a person nonchalantly doing good deeds. Coyote is simply wholesome in a quiet way. He’s the guy who starts a chain of paying it forward at the coffeeshop, the guy who spots you in the gym when the weights are maybe too heavy for you but suddenly there’s this slender-ass strongman casually one-handing the bar away like “looks like you need a hand there” and then waving it off like its no big deal. This guy has so many missed connection posts made about him that locals don’t fully believe he’s real until he winds up on the news one day because an armed robbery went awry after he accidentally tripped the robber and took his gun away whilst the robber was sprawled ass-over-teakettle whining in pain. And of course Starrk is just like whatever it’s no big deal guy was clumsy as shit, Imma go home now, being on the news is making me tired. He’s also a Dog Dad. Like obviously Lillinette is his precious child whom he will throw hands over if you lay a finger on her. Starrk also has no less than 3 rescue dogs whom he treats just as fondly as his actual child. These are the best-loved, most cared-for, pampered yet well-mannered, precious mutts in the neighborhood. The only reason Starrk isn’t fostering more is because they would all be foster fails and he knows it. He learns shibari from Jushiro Ukitake. Surprisingly, he’s not into puppy play. I know. We’re all shocked. Yeah no lets add another layer to the cryptid thing. Not only does Starrk have a lot of random encounters where he’s inexplicably aiding someone or making their day better (often unintentionally), he’s the guy who is just, really fucking good in bed. To the point where he’s something of a local legend because you can play 4 Degrees of Primera Espada and everyone either knows someone who’s fucked him, knows someone who knows someone who’s fucked him, or has actually fucked him, and no one has anything bad to say about him. It started one year during Pride Month and it has simply spiralled from there.

Reiryoku Quality

I sort of briefly touched on this in Yoruichi’s Soul, although I was thinking it was about reiatsu then, but in chapter 382 we get this interesting exchange between Retsu and Ichigo. The real point of this sequence is to tell us that at least as of this time, Ichigo’s reiryoku is roughly double that of Retsu’s. He is roughly twice as “strong” as her in a raw spiritual sense.

Now I don’t think it really needs to be explained that a combatant’s total combat strength isn’t just spiritual strength. First, that spiritual strength isn’t just one thing, as there’s reiatsu and reiryoku. Someone can have high reiatsu and low reiryoku or vice-versa, just like you can put a liter of water through a garden hose at high pressure or a swimming pool through the same hose at low pressure. Then there’s also technique, experience, intuition, analysis, guile, fortitude, resolve, physical conditioning, talent at various combat skills, and so on.

As far as I can tell everybody essentially estimates reiryoku from reiatsu. There doesn’t seem to be a good way to tell how strong someone is in an absolute sense, just to estimate their likely strength from their output using past experience. That’s how we get this in chapter 116 when Ichigo is arriving:

Ukitake does something similar with regard to Lillinette’s Cero later on in chapter 336:

So, basically gauging strength is an estimate based on comparing sensory data with experience. Retsu judges Ichigo wrongly, but that’s not what’s interesting. What’s most interesting is that she adds in another wrinkle to this picture: reiryoku quality. Take note of what she says:

“We’re similar in terms of spirit energy. [...] If that was the best you could do in your top form, you weren’t cut out for this. Your spirit energy is probably inherently crude.”

She’s not calling him weak. His quantity of reiatsu is comparable to her own. She’s suggesting he’s crude. That means that although they have similar quantity, his quality might be lower and thus his true combat power is inferior. He disproves this supposition, but think about who Retsu is. She’s an original founding member of the Gotei 13 and the foremost medical expert in Soul Society. She’d know.

She also seems to suggest that quality isn’t something that can be changed. “You weren’t cut out for this,” is a rather final kind of statement, suggesting that no amount of practice, training, or experience will make up the shortfall. It’s implied quality cannot change.

Now I’ve always wondered about this in chapter 153:

Renji has Bankai at this point. That should be perceptible if not outright known at this point, considering that in chapter 140, 141, and 142...

Byakuya and Renji have a Bankai duel not so terribly far away that would be hard to miss. I’ve complained before that nobody from 1st Division went out to check Ichigo and Kenpachi’s fight immediately outside, but we also know these fights are hard to ignore, as we learn from the aftermath of both Yoruichi vs. Soifon in chapter 160 and Ichigo vs. Byakuya in chapter 167:

It is impossible nobody noticed Byakuya and Renji using their Bankai against one another. And what does Byakuya think while confronting Ichigo in chapter 162?

Bankai are supposed to be exceptionally rare and require great experience. If they’re so rare, and it should be known that Renji has Bankai, how can Yamamoto write off Renji so casually? Well, let’s go back to Ikkaku and Iba...

Ikkaku has Bankai but keeps it a secret because he doesn’t want to be pressured into a higher rank, something Iba will later yell at him about during the defense of Fake Karakura. (Pay very close attention to Ikkaku saying, “I’m not like you. I wasn’t born with all your powers.”) Let’s look at chapter 248. Renji still can’t do Kidō either:

Renji likewise seems to refuse promotion for personal reasons, wanting to stay close to Kuchiki Byakuya just like Ikkaku wants to stay close to Kenpachi Zaraki. However, we see in LSS that Renji can easily tank Jackie’s attacks with zero issue, and we see in TYBW that Renji can tank defeat a Sternritter even Kensei and Rose both lose to with relative easy. From a perspective of raw spiritual strength, with his true Bankai unlocked, Renji is absolutely at a very formidable Captain-class level...

... But what if his reiryoku quality is “inherently crude”? What if the same is also true of Ikkaku? How easily would Renji have acquired his true Bankai if Ichibē hadn’t told him he didn’t have the whole story? We all already know Ikkaku got his broken on his first real outing with his. What if the upper echelons of Shinigami are generally only interested in what Iba describes as being “well-rounded” and simply having Bankai isn’t the end-all, be-all despite how rare it is?

I think it seems fairly true that reiryoku quality is actually a rather strong determinant of overall capability. It’s possible to brute force one’s way past it and be combat effective, but it isn’t well-regarded by those with long experience.

This strongly suggests that just because you have reiryoku doesn’t mean you can do everything, as a function of its quality. This as much as cultural bias is probably why the Academy is flooded with nobles and Rukongai applicants are scorned: because they generally aren’t the same and it’s not just classism.

HOLLOWFIED BANKAI

I’ve already written a Headcanon regarding it but I had an Idea Last night regarding its continuity. -- It originated from none other than Urahara who inserted the Reiatsu of a fallen Espada into a singular pill known as Shineiyaku, shadow infiltration pills. -- It was a quickly manufactured tool to return someone’s Bankai, principally Soifon’s and Toshiro’s, from the individual Quincy who had originally purloined them. Generally speaking, Hollows are very toxic to the Quincies hence why they invaded H.M in the first place. The hollowfication nature is meant to be a temporary effect. However My Idea consisted of Toshiro still having residuals of Stark’s and Lilinette’s, read my Hc here, Reiatsu within him, somehow it froze, stuck, along the flow of his own Reiatsu, soon morphing into one of unity, if that makes sense -- Therefore, allowing him to utilize the said form of Bankai when necessitated. - Toshiro wouldn't be aware of it at first, of course, learning of it solely when he was in the midst of training. -- Making him now a fragment of a Vizored? -- But then the whole panels where Mayuri de-zombifying him comes to play, and I’m not sure of all the process he went through with that. But in all, If I can figure something out with this that won't seem like I’m just pulling it out of my arse, it’ll surely become Toshiro’s Bankai trump form in the place of the ugly as feck forced aging up bullshit. A rising young trainer hailing from Unova. She was raised in Driftveil City, and she was the first in her family to become a trainer, doing so when she was 15 years old. Her first pokemon was a Gothita, which she nicknamed Lillinette.

She proceeded on the gym challenge, like many her age - much of her current team was caught during this time and as such have been with her since she was young. She successfully defeated all of the Unova gym leaders and two of the Elite Four before being defeated. Around this time, she met a young Cynthia on one of her travels to Unova; the two quickly became close friends.

In the present, Mira is a professional trainer of some repute that travels frequently, both around Unova and sometimes between regions. Cynthia has challenged her to become Champion of Unova, a challenge she has taken quite seriously; first, however, her focus is on becoming a gym leader or Elite Four member.

Relationships:

Cynthia: close friends since they were teenagers, the two remain close even as high-profile professional trainers. Their relationship constantly teeters on the line between platonic and romantic, and they are known to joke flirt, though sometimes it’s unclear if they’re actually joking. Mira is known to visit Cynthia’s summer home frequently.

Shauntal: also close friends, though they met later on. They mutually respect one another a lot and are known to have plenty of friendly competitions.

Trivia:

Mira is quite a fashionable trainer and is known to match her accessories to her Gothitelle. Hats, bows, handbags, shoes, she has plenty that match Gothitelle’s black-with-white-bows aesthetically and switches them out regularly.

is the Soul King reducible?

i mean, we know that he’s a genuinely mythic figure, that he has unexplained magical powers, and likewise that his dismembered body parts both have their own magic powers and are self-aware in turn.

but the SK is a Transcendental omnihybrid, so he can manifest the abilities of every spiritual ‘template’.

and we know

A) Hollows are capable of dividing (like starfish) into multiple individuated beings when torn apart (see - Starrk & Lillinette, but also Szayelaporro and Yylfordt)

B) exposing a person to the Hogyoku for long enough allows them to manifest their abilities innately, without crutches (e.g. Aizen was able to discard his Zanpakuto but maintain his powers of illusion)

C) the Hogyoku was made out of some of the fragments of the Soul King that were scattered throughout Samsara, and it spontaneously developed a nascent will and agency of its own

so it might not be that each of the Soul King’s body parts has a unique supernatural ability in its own right, disconnected from the other power systems of the setting;

instead, it may simply be that a Transcendental being can express their spiritual powers innately, and that a sundered fragment of a Transcendental being becomes a self-aware Transcendental being in its own right.

that would also explain why Yuhavach never bothered to give Gerard or Pernida a Schrift, even though he was perfectly able and willing to give Schrifts to robots, Hollows, and motherfucking imaginary friends; a Schrift would be a superfluous crutch to a Transcendental being.

in any case, the Almighty would have to be the Soul King’s one “true” ability, the one he manifested in his own self.

is he ever actually described as having used the abilities attributed to his dismembered body parts? that would put a major hole in this line of thinking.

but in that case, I suppose he could have intentionally exploited his synecdochic Transcendence in order to partition himself into some kind of spiritual god-Voltron, a la Arana!Taylor.
