while i do really enjoy the hq dub, one gripe i do have with it is that it seems afraid to fully lean in to the sincerity of the sub. not that there aren't plenty of genuine heartfelt moments in the dub, or that there aren't a lot of comedic moments in the sub, but the dub is a lot more likely to undercut a serious moment with added jokes, or play something as comedic or sarcastic when it was serious/straightforward in the sub. my guess is this has to do with american dub directors trying to match the tone of other shonens, or to try and appeal more directly to school-aged american boys (who as we all know are allergic to sincerity). most of the time i don't mind it. but sometimes...
