I saw somebody say the difference between Dabi and Shigaraki is that Dabi doesn't want to be saved and is completely cut off from his emotions while Shigaraki wants to be saved deep down and he is still in touch with his emotions. I know both of them will be saved in the end, but what are your thoughts? A lot of people say Dabi doesn't want to be saved but I think he convinced himself that he is worthless and not worth saving. I wish we could see more of Touya's internal thoughts.
Okay—forewarning, any bitchy tone you’re gonna read is not directed at you anon, but at the “somebody” or the people you are referring to. Also this is probably gonna turn out long and I’m on mobile and it won’t let me add a “cut”, so I apologize in advance.
You know what’s absolutely hilarious? The fact that villain haters have been saying the EXACT. SAME. THING. about SHIGARAKI this entire fucking time. But it gets better—in my short time in this fandom (about a year or so now—god) I have seen the hero-stan side of the fandom go through its own character arc lmao:
“Deku would never wanna save Shigaraki! Shig hurt too many people and that goes against Deku’s values!” (Chapter 295 comes out)
“That was just Deku saying he looked like he needed help, that doesn’t mean he’s actually going to go save him! There’s a difference!” (Chapter 305 comes out)
“Deku wants to save him but he’s not going to be able to because Shigaraki doesn’t want it, and he’s too far gone to be reached at this point.”
And then this:
Tumblr media
“Well DABI CAN’T BE SAVED BECAUSE HE’S NOT REACTING LIKE SHIGARAKI!!”
All that to say—maybe, just maybe, don’t listen to these fucking idiots. I won’t even try to venture to twitter or wherever to see their reactions to Tenko (not Shigaraki, not AFO—TENKO) literally calling out FOR a hero—and um, Midoriya specifically. Because they’ll just make up some other excuse. Or they’ll do what you said and try to impose their idiotic takes onto Dabi because they realize that they are in fact, losing this game of reading comprehension they dared to play. Lol.
My thoughts on that are—-Dabi and Shigaraki are two completely different characters. One is significantly more developed, more 3D, more in your face, and his fate is tied to the main character’s. What does this mean? It means Shigaraki is going to get more focus. His inner world will be shown to us more, and it will be more transparent, and he will be easier for us to read. Also—his arc and Midoriya’s are spoon feeding us the theme of the story: Heroes save. Their plot line is so easy to follow. It’s straight forward and blunt. It’s so straight forward that the author shocked even ME when he made the main villain call out for his hero by name. I seriously did not expect that. But Horikoshi is not playing games with Shigaraki’s arc. He’s no longer making the connection between them with “subtle” parallels, but now with the dialogue from both sides.
Dabi doesn’t get that same treatment. Why?
Because even now, he’s still an enigma in the story. He’s a mystery. His identity was a mystery the entire story up until 40 or so chapters ago, and we haven’t seen him since and we haven’t gotten any inner exploration of his thoughts. He has not narrated any part of the story by himself (save for right before Twice’s death). So—people who are surface level readers (which are the people you are describing) are going to just see a villain with no emotions who doesn’t care. But that is such a misreading of not just his character, but the entire Todoroki Family sub plot.
Unfortunately, Dabi doesn’t get to have individual arc privileges it seems. At least not yet. Right now, honestly, he reads as a plot device for Endeavor’s atonement and for the Todoroki family reconciliation. Meaning, his character’s purpose in the story is to restore the family, not necessarily to develop into his own fully fleshed out character. I am HOPING 🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼 that this changes when we get back to the Todofam, back to Shouto. But I don’t know that it will. I’m not getting my hopes up. Dabi also gets different treatment because the overall tone and theme of his story isn’t necessarily “heroes save”. That does play into it, yes, that is the thematic umbrella the Todoroki family falls under, but they also have a different message altogether. Their story is about family. BNHA puts a lot of focus on family, and the vast majority of that vibe is from the Todofam.
I don’t think it’s a matter of if Dabi wants to be saved, or even thinks he can be. It’s about him realizing that he has an opportunity to have an identity outside of his dad and his trauma (by going home to his siblings) and by realizing that he isn’t alone, and that he isn’t the only one from his family who believes it’s Endeavor’s fault, not his. That’s where Shouto’s words will weigh the heaviest. Shouto will be that eye opener for him.
What we DO know about Dabi, is that he cares about his siblings, and misses them (chapters 191, 301, and 302 are proof of that). So that alone is enough for him to turn it around and be saved. He doesn’t have to be like Shigaraki who is calling out for his hero. They’re two different characters with two different origins. Shigaraki needed a hero after his family died, Touya needed his family after HE died. They’re two different people with different needs. So no, they aren’t going to present to readers the same.
Sorry this turned out so long. Anyway—don’t listen to those people, or whoever is saying that. They’ve been wrong this whole time and are grasping at any straw they can to remain “right”. They’re gonna lose, don’t worry.

reactions to the bnha: heroes rising film
spoilers alert !
(i risked coronavirus to go to the cinema for this but no regrets because we all want to die anyway oof-)
the film was very 1a centred & that’s gr8 and all especially since we got to witness the bond they had between them & just. how incredibly amazing their teamwork is
but i really ,,, miss,,, aizawa (my fave, my tru love)
he had a total of 3 (?) scenes, each of them lasting like less than 10 secs - even toshinori had more scenes than that : (
but you know who even had less screen time (aka none),,, our boy,,, the valid purple son,,,, shinsou hitoshi : (
the person who had the most screen time was this new villain called nine and i really wanna yell begone thot at him because he was like “i want to create a utopia where the powerful rules” and i was like thinking,, yo that shit sounds like capitalism & neoliberalism
his character design was really pretty, but it didn’t make up for his ideology that came outta nowhere with no backstory - so it was really hard to empathise/sympathise
what makes a villain good is 1) sufficient backstory 2) being so damn predictable and familiar that you actually prefer them over every other new villain because better the devil you know than the devil you don’t know
anyway, what really slaps is kacchan’s fuckin character development !!
lil gremlin is still gremlin but ,, he’s working with other kids,, he’s minimising damage done to the area while fighting villains,, there was a scene of him all calm and shit while eavesdropping on izuku and katsuma (which once again proves that most of his anger is just a front he puts up in front of other people rather than a perpetual state, and ya know what, i love that introvertedness that he has),,, him being protective over the bakusquad and not blasting kaminari for teasing him,,, he and izuku fighting together like a hero duo ,,,, eye-
this movie really said bakugo character development hUH
anyway in the beginning when endeavour showed up and dabi and endeavour had this whole showdown with their fire quirks and we got this close up of endeavour’s thicc thighs and i was like :           ) we don’t stan for this here but at the same time i was like @ hawks damn ur daddy really be like that, huH
which reminds me of my whole spiel about dabi/hawks and endeavour/hawks : ‘ )
but yea. dabi was unfairly attractive and i just want death to consume me
okay so the plot was like,, the hero commission (aka the dodgy ass institution): how about sending the 1a kids to an island where there are no active heroes ??
so the 1a kids get yeeted off to an island,, and they are having fun helping the locals out !! (this is the wholesome content we all deserve)
jirou and yaomomo asdgjhskgjahkj
kacchan who stays at home the entire day because he’s on ~villain duty~ and there weren’t any villains so he just sits at home and read manga asdfghjkl that’s a hard Mood
kirishima looking like the cutie he is eye-
the bakusquad teasing kacchan by calling him “kacchan of bakugo”
how is maharo & katsuma so damn cute *angery fists*
but izuku really be adopting children left and right hUh
dadmight and dadzawa whomst i only know dadku
ochako & tsuyu are so cute wtf eye-
these villains are overpowered af wtf
wow i love 1a having each other’s backs their teamwork,, was ,,, so good,,, so smooth ,,, (*whispers* poly 1-a anyone ??)
everyone be losing until kacchan comes blasTing in, saving kirishima & kaminari with sheer determination and stubbornness and manages to defeat one (1) villain
not going to lie though i feel like mummy got done dirty like that
but i like the little nod to the provisional exam arc
the inflated izuku mahoro projected was the Cutest
anyway what really clapped was you know,, both izuku and kacchan being the smort cookies they are: “DIDN’T I TELL YOU THAT ONCE I’VE SEEN YOU USE IT, I HAVE A WAY OF COUNTERING IT?!"
like oof
also i love how izuku is established as the image of hope (the saviour) and kacchan is established as the image of victory (the victor) - this whole “win to save” and “save to win” really got laid down really heavily
but we’re all hoes for that i guess
touga in her winter gear !!! eye-
yaomomo delivering the Goods (i.e. the cannons)
a o y a m a : (
the moment i realised that tokoyami was in the cave, i knew the villain there was Done For
i haven’t forgotten our resident eldritch abomination, dark shadow, y’all
i just ?? love ?? mina ???? so much ??????
ngl i didn’t know chimera was literally a chimera until this part i just thought he one big furry
oof
that flashback to endeavour’s advice when shouto was fighting chimera ?? the symBoLisM wow
shouto being able to rationally separate endeavour the hero and endeavour the shitty dad & using the advice endeavour gave him to empower himself -
- wipes tears
sero and ochako getting blasted away really badly by nine,,, and izuocha happens but we’ve all seen that before
it is kacchan,, ,, being protective of sero when he got yeeted,,,,, that is the Point
THE BEST PART ABT THE SECOND LAST FIGHT WAS LITERALLY BKDK BEING SO IN SYNC WITH EACH OTHER’S MOVES THAT THEY WERE FIGHTING LIKE A HERO DUO ??
LIKE IZUKU KICKING THE VILLAIN, REBOUNDING OFF THE SHIELD,, AND THEN FLYING OFF JUST FOR KACCHAN TO GRAB IZUKU’S HAND AND FLING HIM BACK AT THE VILLAIN FOR A SECOND ATTACK
THE WHOLE HANDHOLDING THING IS STARTING TO COME OUT AS A MOTIF
AND I JUST WOW ,,, BKDK,, (platonic or romantic or otherwise) OUT HERE,, HOLDING HANDS AS EQUALS,,, SYMBOLIC OF THEIR CHANGING RELATIONSHIP,,,,
s h o u j i : ( protecting mahoro and katsuma with his body : ( big cuddle boy doesn’t deserve this pain !!!
don’t think i didn’t notice the film using the same bgm as the kamino rescue
it draws such a powerful parallel ??  back then it was kacchan who needed to be ‘saved'  but now it’s kacchan doing the saving & the winning - once again, such character development asdfghjkl
this film,, making me appreciate kaminari 10x more
also fellas is it gay to stare at your rival and being able to communicate non-verbally
bkdk detroit smashing the storm together & making a damn fucking hole in the stratosphere like all might,, dispelling the damn storm and letting sunlight filter in ?? that was some really obvious symbolism but regardless,,,, wow
this is the part where the whole twin stars motif really came right in kicking our houses down
kacchan breaking both of his arms because of one for all & all i can think of is ,, izuku,, stop sharing your bone breaking juice with people
i’m just thinking about how people @ izuku: wtf how do you deal with this bone breaking bs all the time
and izuku, pure bean: oh yea haha i thought it was normal ?? like everyone has to get used to their quirks like this ??
a concept: quirkless izuku not understanding how quirks are supposed to feel
anyway, dadmight cradling izuku in his arms only to leave kacchan a metre away ?? favouritism that we’re all here for
izuku : ( apologising : ( for : ( being : ( a : ( bad : ( successor : (
i just want to shake izuku’s shoulders & tell him that he did super well and that he shouldn’t be ashamed of himself and that he deserves everything good in this world
also imagine being so gremlin that all the one for all predecessors were like "nope we’re not dealing with this gremlin child, we prefer the pure broccoli”
disappointed that hawks didn’t get enough screentime
but we got some hawks & tokoyami and ryuukyuu & ochako time
kacchan ~conveniently~ forgetting what happened ?? i smell something fishy
our local crusty boy shows up & ahh yes, there it is - the close up shot that like to remind us that he needs to Moisturise
everytime i see red shoes on shigs i just think about the parallels between shigs and izuku and my heart breaks all over again
the scene where shouto got hugged super uncomfortably by endeavour ?? oof. the entire cinema just simultaneously laughed and heard the shouuuuutooooo
katsuma being like like “i’m going to become a hero like deku & bakugo !” and kacchan’s acting all cool and shit, telling him “you better” while izuku is like “katsuma, you can become a hero !! we’ll wait for you at ua !!” because he saw himself in katsuma and wanted to be the person he wanted someone to be for him when he was young
breaking my own heart like this
imagine the first years in ten years though
they’re just going to be a bunch of teenagers izuku or 1-a saved or adopted
and they’re going to give aizawa so many more grey hairs than the current 1-a

Out of the three main hero trio and the three main villain trio who do you think is the most similar to their hero or villain counterpart?
****Sorry this took so long to get to. I’m in a better head space now and can finally concentrate on my answer lol
Hmmm well I’m gonna automatically exclude Ochacko and Toga from this because—they’re both good characters but I haven’t thought too much about their similarities in terms of personality. They both have empathy for others but that’s about as deep as it gets between the two of them.
It’s easier for me to think about the similarities between the Todoroki brothers and Shigaraki and Midoriya.
Touya and Shouto's similarities are pretty obvious. For one, they're brothers. Both of which were born for the sole purpose of fulfilling their dad's dream. Both of their characters start off very aloof and pushing everyone around them away, and then throughout the story they slowly start to embrace their surroundings and engage the people around them more. Both end up kind of coming out of their shell in a way but differently. Touya—still concealing his identity—does develop relationships within the League and we see this when he tries to save Twice and also before that when he begrudgingly does whatever the League does even though he doesn’t have to, while complaining the whole time. Shouto is a bit more obvious, he develops friendships and stops being so standoffish. It’s kind of hard to compare their personalities because we’re not sure how much of Touya’s true personality was being concealed in Dabi. Like for example that last panel we had of Dabi was him smiling like a sneaky little bitch lol. I’m willing to bet he’s much more sporadic and energetic than we’ve been seeing because he’s been hiding a lot of his thoughts and feelings this whole time. Shouto too, he’s still so held back by his trauma and his fixation on improving himself for the sake of others, but not himself. I think Touya and Shouto have more oppositions than similarities in terms of design, positions in the story, and origins. But I feel like once we get to know Touya better we’ll see how similar he is to Shouto. I know they’re gonna get along great lol
Shigaraki and Midoriya have a lot more in common in my opinion. But that’s also very deliberate. You’re supposed to draw similarities between the two starting at the beginning. However you don’t see how similar they really are until we get Shigaraki’s backstory. Like for example—Midoriya’s story starts off as him defending another kid from bullies (Bakugo and his gang), and we see that he’s outcasted because he doesn’t have a quirk. Tenko, we know he was trying to protect other kids from bullies because nobody wanted to play with them, but we see he’s outcasted because his father refuses to accept who his son is. Shigaraki is “saved” (kidnapped actually) by AFO, and Midoriya is unintentionally cursed by OFA, and they both get thrown into this war that has nothing to do with them, and they end up facing off.
Their story similarities aside—they’re both empathic and feel deeply for other people. Midoriya reaching out to people who aren’t asking for help, Shigaraki accepting and giving a home to people who were never reached out to. They’re both persistent and don’t give up easily.
My favorite similarity between the two though is that they both wear red shoes. 😂 Like it’s just funny that they don’t know each other well at all, they’re very similar and very different at the same time, dress completely differently, yet somehow both of them decide that red shoes are where it’s at. I love it. Also it’s just Hori’s not-so-subtle way of making you pay attention to all the other ways they’re similar.
Also—I’m not sure this is very prominent because it kind of goes back and forth depending on who is talking to Midoriya—but for the most part Midoriya is just called Deku by everybody, losing his name in a way. And Shigaraki, well, literally lost his name. I’m hoping that he goes by Tenko in the end too. I think that’s likely actually.
I think I’d have to say Shig and Midoriya are the most similar to each other out of all of them. As of right now. That opinion may change when we see Touya more. But it’s very deliberate for Shig and Midoriya, and they’re absolutely going to interact more and get to know each other a bit better and we’ll see even more similarities—so I think that’ll still stay the same.
