I wanted to draw people’s attention to this online application form I filled out and the type of questions you’re likely to be asked in a Hospitality/Bar/Waiting role. All the names of where I’ve worked or the organisation I have applied to have been removed due to legality and confidentiality reasons as this has been published on social media. It would be risky to leave them in.

This post was just to help people who apply for jobs and don’t exactly know what to put when these types of questions get asked in the application or an interview. All you really need to do is draw from your sense of self (i.e. what you’re good at, what your beliefs/morals are, whatever you think constitutes as a good enough answer) and personal experience. It’s not as difficult as people make it out to be. It really depends on you. How you see yourself. It’s like I always say, a good sense of self is extremely crucial to function and progress well in life. Be it family, social or work environments. Sense of self is the key to all your successes. It just happens to be convenient for filling out job applications and answering questions in job interviews. They want to know who you are. So tell them who you are! I know all these recruitment agencies tell you what, where and how to do things. But honestly, they’re right. If you don’t sell yourself to that employer sincerely and confidently, you won’t get an answer back. If you’re not comfortable with what the recruitment agencies tell you to put or you can’t compromise, then write what you think, believe and know to be best to write that is relative to the role you’re applying for and you will get that positive reply back.

This was for the job role ‘Bar Team Member’ with a local pub in my area. These are the questions and my answers to them as follows…

Are you able to read others and pick up on how they are feeling? Yes, I do this anywhere and everywhere I go

When have you done this recently? Why do you think the ability to do this would be beneficial to the bar team member role

Firstly, I am an Empath which means I can gauge people’s emotions and feel how they are feeling. But in addition to that I can also change their mood as well by sending out positive vibrations. It is beneficial because you have to know what the customer wants without asking them so many questions, be able to pick up on whether they’re having a good experience or not and to be able to know if you can change their mood from negative to positive. An example I can give was when I was working as a Customer Service Advisor for a retail store in Middlesbrough. I was sorting out a task I set for myself earlier in the day that I promised myself I would get back to it by the end of the day when a customer came up to me to ask if we had a set of window wipers compatible with their vehicle. I told them that there was but we were out of stock on the shop floor on them. I asked them if they could bear with me for a few moments and I would go and look for them in the warehouse. It took me around 10 minutes but I eventually did find what they wanted and checked to see if it was compatible before presenting it to them. Although it took longer than they expected, they really appreciated that I took the time out to go and look for it for them. I apologized that it took so long. That felt really rewarding to me. The desire to help people in any way I can drives me and makes me smile and that also helps with carrying out the job role of Bar Team Member. If you’re smiling more, you look happier and much more approachable to the customers.

In the past, have you gone above and beyond to have a positive impact on someone? Yes, with friends and family.

When did you last do this? Why do you think the ability to do this would be beneficial to the bar team member role?

The last time I did this was with my mother who recently found out her friend’s husband died. She was actually quite close to him and went to his funeral. When she came back she was very upset. To be able to comfort her in that, I sat her down with me and talked to her about how she was feeling and I made her something to eat in the meanwhile. I changed her mood from upset, full of grief and confused to content, peaceful and understanding. This is very beneficial in the hospitality industry because you want to have a lasting impression on the individual customer and know that you have met their requirements. If not, maybe you’ll be able to change it if you’ve made a positive impact on them personally and made them feel good.

Are you motivated to work in the hospitality industry? Yes, hospitality or helping anyone with any kind of service or giving advice is something that I feel I need to do to make me happy.

Why do you think this industry is right for you?

I believe the hospitality industry is right for me because I have a passion for good customer service and being able to help people with what they require to have a great experience and feel enjoyment in the environment they are in. As a customer myself in several pubs/restaurants I have received such a service and it went a long way with me so I want to be able to provide the same service to your customers in your environments.

Are you still smiling after working a long shift? Yes, always when it’s customer service roles.

When did you last work longer or later on something than you initially expected to?

I last worked longer for around 10 plus hours, 6 days a week at a previous job. I was working for a sales company and going door to door. The reason why I signed up for such a strenuous and tiring job was because the scheme was providing households with free loft and cavity wall insulation, therefore reducing the carbon footprint and helping the economy have a cleaner atmosphere. Helping people was my priority in that so I did not care that the hours were longer and the effort was much greater than what I had initially expected. I enjoyed being able to help people whatever the environment. I will put in the same amount of hours and effort for this job if it requires it.

Have you visited the Bar/Pub you are applying for or where this is not possible visited another one of our sites? Yes, I have been to several.

Which pub/bar did you visit and why?

One of your sites in Ingleby Barwick is one I can vividly remember. I used to perform there when I was in a band and did the open acoustic night. It was a great environment. It was a very friendly atmosphere and the staff were very efficient and speedy in their customer service. I would love to get the chance to work there if for any reason I am unsuitable to work at the job position for the pub I am applying for right now.

Where do you search for jobs?

Everywhere. Universal Jobmatch mostly. I’m even registered for the websites within the Hospitality/Bar/Waiting fields. The reason why is I enjoy the social, family and outgoing atmosphere so much more in these environments. I believe you have to have a passion to do anything otherwise the effort and the ‘can-do’ attitude won’t be put in. You’ll just be miserable and it will show towards the customers and colleagues.

Describe a time when you delivered great customer service?

A time when I delivered great customer service was when I was working as a Café Assistant in Middlesbrough Bus Station on a voluntary position. I had been set a target of replenishing and reorganising the drinks for before my lunch break when a customer came up to me to ask if there was a specific sandwich available on the shelf where the sandwiches were stored which was at the other side of the room from the drinks area. I could of just said ‘Just what’s out there’ and be very vague with the customer because I was busy with my set task and I wanted my lunch break soon, but I didn’t. I used my initiative to locate the sandwich for the customer because I believed that’s what I should do otherwise the customer might not have found what they wanted. The result was that the customer thanked me kindly for giving them my attention even though they could see that I was busy and was grateful to me for putting them first. I then carried on with the task I was set by my manager. If I had not taken the time and energy to look for it for them, I would of been happy because I would of got to go on my lunch breaker sooner. But the customer wouldn’t be happy because I had put myself before them. I won’t ever do that no matter how much I may want to because it’s not in my nature to put myself before someone else. Especially when they need help.

One year later: London Recommendations

I’ve had a number of friends ask me for recommendations for a few days in London. It feels strange to be writing this almost one year after leaving, but I have time at the moment and it was lovely remembering it. I genuinely loved living there.

This list is purely for people who are visiting, whereas I probably would have a completely separate post for those who are staying long term (i.e., fave brunch/coffee shops, the bermondsey beer mile, pubs/watering holes, east end vs west end, parks, etc.)

Without further ado....

Things to do:

The best way to see London is by foot, and if you have to take public transit, take a bus (which are much cleaner and reliable than the ones in the States). I used to live in Shad Thames, near Tower Bridge on the east end, so our usual walking loop included...

Starting at our flat in Shad Thames (its rich in history and architecture, see post here), walk on the Queen’s Walk along the south bank of the Thames west all the way down to Westminster Bridge. Along here, you’ll see Tower Bridge, Tower of London (across the river), City Hall, London Bridge, Borough Market, Shakespeare’s Globe Theater, the Tate, the Millennium Bridge, the National Theater, Waterloo Bridge, and the London Eye.

Suggested stops: Borough Market, and take at least 30 minutes to walk through and sample all of the food. Alex's favorites were the lamb box or salt beef bagel, and mine was the Ethiopian food or the paella/Malay curry combo. You can also drink publicly in Europe, so stop by the beer shop or get a wine spritzer from the spot next to it for your walk.

Suggested stops: If you're lucky enough to come in August, this is the only month that the Queen leaves London for her summer palaces (as one does) and Buckingham Palace is open for visitors. It's beautiful and worth a visit if you again have a spare 1.5 hrs and time it perfectly with your reservations.

Trafalgar Square is the heart of London. Its where all public gatherings, protests and festivals end. If you google London, the pin drops you here. The National Gallery bookends it on the north side, and its a free and excellent art museum.

Also, watch out for the swans in St James Park. They're beautiful but aggressive. I think just last month, a swan attacked and killed a little dog. If you go through behind the war rooms and skip Trafalgar Square, look out for the gamekeeper's hut, which is adorable and reminds me of Hagrid.

Once you're on the main road towards Piccadilly Circus, you can keep an eye out for Fortnum and Mason. Its where supposedly the queen gets her groceries. I never had an interest in going in, but to each their own. They sell their teas and biscuits at the airport dutyfree if you want to get gifts for friends, they won't be able to tell where you bought it.

End at Oxford Circus - I like to schedule lunch at Carnaby Street Dishoom so I’m properly hungry and the timing is usually about right.

This whole walking route will take a few hours, if you’re not stopping at any of the suggested spots. See here for the route on google maps.

OTHER SUGGESTIONS:

Harrods is always good for a stop. I usually go right past the makeup/accessories on the ground floor to the Food Hall, which is my favorite part. Take the Egyptian Staircase up to the furntiure/tech rooms too, which are fun to check out. Otherwise the apparel assortment is not dissimilar to a Bergdorfs. They’re famous for catering to the whims of the ultra rich; available on request are exotic animals and helicopters. The previous owner’s son Dodi is famous for being Princess Diana’s last lover and partner.

Almost ALL museums in London are FREE. It's a beautiful thing and a great way to spend a rainy day. There are a few right across from Harrods. The only one I didn't get to visit (with regret) is the V&A, which is NOT free but very much worth it from what I've heard. The Natural History Museum in London swaps their giant dinosaur/whale skeletons entry hall with its cousin in New York on occasion.

Sky Garden is the rooftop public garden on top of the "walkie talkie" building on Fenchurch street. It's def worth a visit, and its free (part of the negotiations for the property owners when they built it, since it was buying out public space). You do need a reservation which opens up 2 weeks prior.

Aquashard/Hu Tong at the Shard. Pay 15 quid to go to the top of the Shard, or pay 15 quid for a cocktail with similar views just a few floors down? I know I have my answer. Entry is towards the southern entrance of the Shard, you'll see a separate revolving door to the right with an awning that says AQUA. Go to the bathroom for fun views while you use the lavatories.

Markets are fun and everywhere in Europe. Here are some good ones in London, in order of personal preference;

Borough Market, as mentioned above. You can't come to London and not visit. Also lots of famous films have taken place here, including Harry Potter.

Maltby Street market. A lot smaller and more local, I'm biased because I used to come here with a 10 mins walk from my flat. St Johns bakery is here, you should definitely get a donut. But honestly its quite tiny compared to the bigger name brand markets mentioned in this list, so go if you have spare time.

Notting Hill/Portobello Road. Even though it takes a little while to get there, its adorable and you get to see a more residential side of London. Go any day but Sunday. Check out the shopfronts too. The Churchill Arms pub is nearby, and known for its explosion of greenery.

Spitalfields/Brick Lane Sunday market. Spitalfields is a permanent market, and a great central location. If it happens to be Sunday, you can hop over to the divier and more eclectic Brick Lane to check out vintage and consignment shops. Ignore the hecklers trying to get you to go in for a curry. Keep an eye out for the incredible street art, this area is known to be a tagging haven.

Columbia Road Flower Market. You have to time it perfectly to see it at its best, but its not a far detour if you're in the Shoreditch area (which is kind of the Brooklyn/Lower East Side of London). You can skip it if you're touring around, since you'll likely not be buying any flowers.

Things to Eat:

I cannot emphasize this enough: INDIAN FOOD is the best food in London. And the best/most reliable place to get it is:

Dishoom. There are a few locations; our favorite is Carnaby Street, followed by Covent Garden. Def get the Pau Bhaji and Ruby Chicken. We also love Bhel, Lamb Biryani and Samosas. Other people swear by the black daal. Get a colaba colada or mango lassi to wash it down.

Tayyabs. More on the grill/Middle Eastern range of the food map, but this place is known for kebabs and BYOB. My first company party was here, and it was rowdy and fun. Like korean bbq, expect for your clothes to smell afterwards. It's on the east end near Aldgate, and there's not much near here so its kind of out of the way. Londoners love this spot though.

Padella. On the fringes of Borough Market near the tube station, this place is known for affordable and beautifully handmade pasta. Don't be afraid to order 2 pastas/person. Also, queue at least 25 mins before it opens. By the time 15-to arrives, the queue will have snaked around 3 times.

St Johns. The original and legendary creative mastermind of second-wave British cuisine, this is true farm to table, nose to tail dining by Fergus Henderson. Not for vegetarians.

Ham Yard Hotel is my favorite spot for high tea. Skip the prissy ones where the waitstaff is in tails and you feel like you can't slouch, and come here for super chic, beautifully done tea in a central location. You might spot a celebrity. There's a bowling alley "speakeasy" in the basement. We take all our guests here.

Dinerama in Shoreditch - you may have to pay an entry fee, but this is a bustling market with lots of food and cocktail stands where desk jockeys and the cool kids of shoreditch mingle. We loved coming here for happy hour/nibbles on a friday or saturday before going out in Shoreditch. Get a gin and tonic (they make excellent ones in the G&T stand, which was near the pizza spot if I remember correctly).

Duck and Waffle is gorgeous dining and open 24 hrs (some like to drunkenly come here at 3am for 5-course meals). Beautiful penthouse views of the city, but definitely have to make reservations.

OVERALL TIPS:

Download the citymapper app. This is by far the most reliable and accurate app for public transport in London, gives you down to the position on the train and live arrival times.

If you have contactless credit cards/Apple pay/Samsung pay, don't bother purchasing an Oyster card. Unlike the US, contactless payment is accepted everywhere in Europe, even the bus/tubes/ferries. I still get annoyed when someone forces me to use a chip because they're not sure if the terminal works with contactless payment in NYC, when I can get around with just Apple Pay in Bruges which is literally a town made of stone.

Make reservations. London lives off reservations, and you'll be hard-pressed to find anything if you just walk in. Brits in general are "planners". Unfortunately this doesn't leave much room for spontaneity but you can plan around areas and food resos, and explore the neighborhoods before/after. I like to bookmark all the spots I'm interested in on google maps so I can see at a glance what's nearby.

UBER, don't take a cab. The black taxis are adorable but nauseatingly expensive. Uber will get you there in 1/3 of the price.

When in doubt, Bus over Tube. You'll get to see a lot more of the city this way, its cheaper, and will take close to the same amount of time.

How To Style Curly Hair [Using Natural Products]

Many of you know that it’s been a journey for me in learning to love and embrace my curly hair. We live in a society that values perfectly coiffed hair without a single strand out of place and well…that just isn’t an option with curly hair.

For many years I straightened my hair thinking I looked more beautiful and would be more respected with straight hair. The former could not be more untrue. I feel way more myself and way more beautiful with my curly hair. The latter is still a work in progress. I do think we have a cultural bias towards straight, perfectly manicured hair and part of this is perpetuated by people with curly hair thinking they have to straighten it. I was in that camp for many years.

There are so few role models with curly hair who really embrace what they have and talk about actually loving their curly hair. I realized early on that if I couldn’t find those role models I at least had the opportunity to become one for somebody else. And that’s what the last two years have been for me. “How do you style your curly hair?” is now one of the most common questions I get.

I’ve wanted to write this post for a long time now but I’ve also been trying to learn and absorb as much as I can about curly hair because the answer isn’t so simple. Hair exists on a spectrum from pin straight to kinky curls. No person has the exact same hair as you. You have to account for hair porosity and texture. Curls also have their own designation and what you use for type 2a curls looks different from type 4c. Yes, there are different types of curls.

So today’s post isn’t just about how to style curly hair naturally, it’s also about educating and empowering YOU to understand and embrace the type of hair that you have so you can make the best decisions for it. Of course, I’m biased towards the products I use but I also recognize that what I use may not work for you, and vice versa. I’m also working against our North American preference for ultra-clean, perfectly styled hair and how you feel about that is up to you. In the end, I hope you can learn to be excited about what you have whether it’s curly, wavy, straight or anything in between. Self-love is about loving all of you, even the things you can change. Okay let’s jump in…

TYPES OF CURLY HAIR (TEXTURE)

As I mentioned above, no two curls are alike. Similarly, your curls can and will change throughout your lifetime. Some of this you control like heat and chemical exposure and some of this you don’t, like hormonal changes and pregnancy. Identifying the types of curls or waves you have now is the most important metric for figuring out how to style your curly hair. So what are the different types of curly hair?

Curly hair exists on a spectrum of texture from 2-4 and a-c. Someone with 2a “curls” has loose waves whereas someone with 4c curls has extremely tight coils. I have 3a-3b curls (depending on the day). You can figure out your curl texture HERE. More on how to style for your hair texture below.

WHAT IS HAIR POROSITY + HAIR DENSITY?

Besides texture, there are a few other metrics that help you better understand your curly hair and how to style it. One of the metrics that has had the largest impact for me has been hair porosity. Porosity is defined as your hair’s ability to absorb or retain moisture. Low porosity hair takes a long time to absorb moisture and can take hours to even days for hair to dry. Products tend to sit on hair rather than be absorbed. High porosity hair can easily absorb moisture to a point where you almost can’t use enough oils but because the cuticles are so open it can also easily lose moisture. Curls tend to be frizzier and on the drier side but can also dry quite quickly. You can also have medium porosity hair, which is what I have. None are better or worse than the other, it’s just a matter of knowing what you have and how to work with it. There are several different ways to determine your porosity included HERE.

Hair density refers to the thickness or coarseness of your hair. It’s basically how many strands you have on your head. Here’s how to test your hair density: part your hair in the center and let the strands fall to either side. Without pushing or forcing your hair, how much of your scalp can you see? If you can’t see any you have high hair density, if you can see a lot of your scalp you have low hair density and if you can see just a little bit, you have medium hair density (which is what I have).

HOW TO PICK CURLY HAIR PRODUCTS THAT WORK FOR YOU

1. Find out your texture

3. Find our your hair density

I truly believe that when it comes to picking products, knowing your hair porosity and density is more important than knowing your hair texture. Texture is affected more by washing and styling techniques than products themselves. More on techniques for hair texture below so let’s chat about porosity and density first.

Low porosity hair: Because your hair has a hard time being penetrated and retaining moisture, you want products that contain humectants, which attract moisture. Anything with honey or glycerin is a good idea for you. You also want products that add moisture through oils such as jojoba, apricot kernel oil, argan oil etc… Stay away from heavier oils that will just sit on your hair such as coconut or olive oil. Avoid proteins in your haircare products. Proteins in haircare include: hydrolyzed wheat, oat, silk, soy or any type of keratin.

Medium porosity hair: Because your hair is pretty consistent with moisture you should avoid anything with too much protein that may change or affect the porosity of your hair. A bit of protein is okay but not as part of your daily regimen. Anything with moisture is good but find that happy place between too much and too little.

High porosity hair: Because your pores are so open, you don’t want products that attract moisture, but actually seal it in. Too much moisture = damage and frizz. You want anti-humectants (opposite of low porosity hair) which will seal the cuticles rather than just laying one products on top of another, including avocado oil, raw shea butter, coconut and olive oil. Products with proteins in them (listed above) can also help repair dry and damaged hair which high porosity hair has a tendency to be.

Now onto hair density…

Low density hair: You might think of this as “fine hair”. You want to be careful about the weight of your moisturizers. Stick to lighter oils like apricot kernel oil, argan oil, almond oil and neem oil (sometimes coconut, jojoba and olive oil can be okay). You’ll want to style with mousse and anything that adds volume and stay away from creams and thicker gel styling agents.

Medium density hair: like goldilocks, not too much, not too little. You can do a little bit of everything but try not to go overboard with the oils or gels or opt out of them either.

High density hair: Stay away from anything that adds volume and stick to heavier products like creams and gels. You do well with thicker butters like shea and mango.

CURLY HAIR NO-NOs

Regardless of hair texture, porosity or density, there are some curly hair no-nos that all should avoid. Below I’m sharing some tips and ingredients to stay away from:

DO NOT BRUSH YOUR CURLY HAIR WHEN IT’S DRY. Repeat this 10 times. Most people with curly hair know this, however I find myself having this conversation with parents of curlies who themselves don’t have curly hair. The only time and place to brush curly hair is in the shower, with a comb while the hair is still wet with a ton of conditioner in it. This is why you don’t brush curly hair when it’s dry…

Don’t get your haircut by ANY stylist – if you’re ready to embrace your curls, find someone who knows how to cut curls. Not every hair stylist does so be sure to call and inquire. Also have them cut your curls to be styled curly (this often means dry cutting). People swear by Deva Cuts and while I love the technique, I personally am not the biggest fan of their products – they’re better for curly hair but certainly not natural FYI. So it may be a hard ask but try to find someone who uses cleaner ingredients AND can cut curly hair. I’m still on the lookout too!

Don’t straighten your hair often – I still straighten my hair from time-to-time (about 3-4x a year) and it’s nice to change it up though it will affect your hair so beware. When you heat style your hair you affect the curl pattern and it will take a few washes for it to go back to normal. As you transition back to your natural texture I recommend staying away from your heat tools and letting your curls find their natural pattern.

CURLY HAIR INGREDIENTS TO AVOID

Silicones – silicones are the arch-nemesis for anyone with curly hair. At first they help tame frizz but over time they weigh your hair down and will actually make your hair look limp and lifeless and eventually frizzier than before. Lookout for ingredients that end in “cone” i.e. cyclomethicone or dimethicone

Sulfates – another important one to stay away from with curly hair. Sulfates are what create that lather in most shampoos. It’s something we’ve all gotten used to, however it’s incredibly stripping for the natural oils in your hair and can dry out your hair and/or cause your scalp to produce MORE oil in return i.e. Sodium Laureth, Myreth, or Lauryl Sulfate (commonly referred to as SLS).

Alcohols – in general alcohols are just very drying for curly hair. You should definitely stay away from alcohols if you have high porosity hair that tends to be drier i.e. Isopropyl alcohol, ethanol etc..

Parabens + Phthalates – both of these ingredients are bad for any type of hair (curly or not). Parabens and phthalates are used in skincare/haircare products as an emulsifier and preservative. Both are harmful to our bodies and have potentially been linked to cancer later in life. i.e. synthetic fragrance and and anything that contains “paraben”.

HOW I STYLE MY CURLY HAIR

As I shared above I have 3b curls with medium porosity and density. That means I can get away with using a lot of different products though I do find if I’m in drier conditions I need to amp up the moisture. In the video above I walk you through how I style my hair and why I use the products I use, but for a brief overview I’m sharing some tips below.

1. Minimize shampoo and conditioner – I wash my hair once a week. I will often wet it and sometimes condition it more than once, but I don’t use shampoo more than once a week and sometimes up to 10 days. Your hair needs natural oils to thrive and shampooing it strips it of its natural oils. There is a lot of talk in the curly world of co-washing and the no-poo method. Cowashing involves combining your shampoo and conditioner together to help preserve the moisture as you wash. The “no-poo” method involves giving up shampoo all together and letting your hair do its thing. I personally use a sulfate-free shampoo so it doesn’t strip the oils as much as conventional shampoo. As a result I didn’t notice much of a difference when co-washing vs. using shampoo alone. I’ve also tried the “no-poo” method and had too much product build-up so that’s just my preference.

2. Use a shampoo and conditioner specifically designed for your hair – Since I have 3b curls with medium porosity and density I can use just about anything but I tend to reach for things with a bit of protein and heavier oils since my hair can get quite dry. I personally love the Shea Moisture Coconut and Hibiscus Shampoo and Conditioner. But if I am straightening my hair (which I do a few times a year), I will use the Evolvh Ultra Shine Shampoo and Conditioner because I need a a shampoo that is more cleansing to remove any product build-up. It contains Disodium Sulfosuccinate which is NOT a sulfate but is a foaming agent to help cleanse the hair. I do get some build-up with the Shea Moisture products but I find these natural oils are good for my hair and actually make my curls look better…it just doesn’t look so good when I straighten it.

3. Seal the cuticles in cold water – because I have medium porosity hair that is somewhat dry, I always do one final rinse in the shower under cold water to seal the cuticles after conditioning. This closes them up and ensures they retain their moisture. Note: if you have low porosity hair, you do not want to do this – make sure you use heat to help oils and moisturizers penetrate your hair.

4. Use a microfiber towel or cotton t-shirt – Terrycloth towels can damage your cuticles and make your hair frizzier. Use a microfiber towel (such as this) to scrunch out any water and protect your hair as it dries.

5. Style using the right products for your hair – leave-in-conditioner is my best friend and I’m obsessed with this Smart Curl Leave-In Conditioner from Evolvh. As soon as I’m ready to style I spray is all over my hair. I then use the Evolvh Wonderbalm gel to style my curls by using roughly 3 pumps for each side of my head, lightly spreading over my curls and then scrunching at the bottom.

6. Airdry when possible – I know some people love using their diffuser and drying their curls but after years of straightening, I do my best to stay away from any heat tools. Also I’m lazy and find my hair air dries just fine. It usually takes a few hours for it to dry at which point I try to touch my hair as little as possible to prevent frizz.

7. Protect your curls overnight– some people use a cap but I find a scrunchie or non-kink hair band (not sure what the name is but I use these!) does the trick. I tie it up on the very top of my head so that I look like a pineapple and it stays in place overnight. If I do this my curls usually last for 3-4 days before they start to get dry and frizzy.

I realize this post is exceptionally comprehensive, however there is SO much more I could add. Having curly hair is a journey and honestly, that’s what keeps it fun! You never know what you’re going to get and learning to embrace the unpredictability is the only way to enjoy that journey. I so wish that I’d had a role model growing up telling me that my curly hair was beautiful and something to celebrate but if I can be that person for you that is good enough for me.
