10 Comfort Shows / Movies
Got tagged by @emeraldhazeart to do one of these? Thanks. c: Likewise I'm not going to do these in any order because I'd have to think a bit harder about it, but I'll try not to list (all of) my favourite movies of all time and focus on stuff I find comforting. 🌺
The Care Bears Adventure In Wonderland - I have to mention this one because I rewatched and rewinded it so many times as a child that the videotape got worn. Rewatched it again recently and realised I can still heavily relate to the film's 'Alice', so it left a lasting impression. Psps, this one's up on Youtube for free...
2. Come Outside - Another show from my childhood, which I haven't gone back to rewatch. It's sort of like a kid's version of how it's made with a sweet auntie figure and a mischievous but cute dog.
3. Wander Over Yonder - Okay so this is just leaking into my favourite shows, but I really like WOY. It's funny and visually stunning and Wander's optimism can be infectious.
4. Kiki's Delivery Service - I could put a lot of Ghibli films on this list, like My Neighbor Totoro or Ponyo or The Cat Returns, but I'm choosing Kiki because it spoke the clearest to me about being in a difficult place and sharing kindness with others - and without having as intense themes as something like Howl's Moving Castle or Princess Mononoke or Spirited Away, which I also like, but for different reasons.
5. Pokemon 4Ever - Hnngh I didn't even watch this one as a child. I watched it for the first time, like, last year. But it's really special and I love Celebi I can't even begin to describe it. Maybe it's because it's got that Pokémon Colosseum thing going on, I don't know.
6. Beauty and the Beast - Uh favourite Disney movie. Again I have a few of these. It good. Next
7. Come Dine With Me - I used to watch it a lot. I like cooking competition trash TV, sorry... This only wins out over Cake Wars because I'm pretty sure I saw more of it, but I love that too.
8. Poirot - One does not generally think of murder when one thinks of comfort, but this basically encompasses any and all murder mystery shows my grandma has playing on the TV when I go to her house. I haven't seen Poirot for a while, but I think he's my favourite of the main chracters I see on these things - and I don't get as riled up as I do while watching Doc Martin, Heartbeat or Father Brown!
9. The Way Of The Househusband - I think I watched all of what was available of this in one sitting when it came out, and I haven't really returned to it since ... but that's a lot more than I do for other shows. You've probably seen snippets of the manga on Tumblr. It's simple, it's one running joke, but it's a good one.
10. Wallace and Gromit - All episodes / films of Wallace and Gromit have a few intense and scary scenes for young children! But I would still watch them for comfort. There's just something reassuring and familiar about this man and his dog.

So the year 2023 walked into a bar...
It said 'ouch'.
Jokes aside, I don't feel particularly hyped about the new year right now. It's around 10pm. But I'll continue:
2023 was a lot better for me than 2022, that's for sure - it started with a new job that I soon learned was tens of times better than the last one. It's not the perfect dream or anything, but I realised it's not normal to hate every moment on the clock.
My bid to 'discipline myself and write more of my novel' fell by the wayside, however. Working doesn't really leave a lot of time or energy for passion projects, so I'm going to have to think about solutions in the next coming years. I've been working on a lot of small projects in the meantime, however.
I also failed my driving test for the third time, and haven't been able to find a new instructor yet. But it's not all dull grim stuff!
The highlight of my year was going to DISNEY WORLD for ten days with my parents. I got to meet up with friends from America and eat lots of food and go on rides and I was honestly the happiest I'd been since the pandemic. I'm not sure I have anything that big planned for 2024, but I look forward to the possibility of more moments like that, and noticed other good things throughout the year. Like, well, pork ramen at Wagamama. I'm not kidding, it's amazing. And the announcement for the re-release of Paper Mario and the Thousand Year Door, one of my favourite games of all time! I'm hyped for that.
With that said, I think I'll cut my review here. Life sure still happens, and not all of it is good and fun, but it's important to keep going to find all those positive moments. So I will keep trying, as always.

oh boy I’m not really a shippy person either ... BUT.

What can I say about these two that I haven’t already?? It doesn’t matter whether it’s the regular universe, or the splatoon universe, or whatever other universe might happen in a fic, I really like these two as a pairing when I’m not paring Alarune with myself
I didn’t go into their initial interactions thinking they’d be a couple, but it helped me discover a lot of things about what I wanted out of Queenie’s character - as well as some things about myself. When authors say that characters ‘have a mind of their own’, it really came into play here.
Alarune also just. Really needed to be loved. While Queenie hasn’t experienced quite the same level of distress, I like to think she understands the place her partner is coming from, and why Alarune behaves the way she does...
Queenie likes to lump on praise, even though she knows it isn’t always ‘deserved’, but she wants other people to see and appreciate the effort Alarune makes, even if that “people” happens to be Alarune herself - letting her know that she knows how much she tries -
UM. ANYWAY. OTHER SHPS. I have lots of OC ships like Nightmare/Evian and Pansy/Groa but I’m going to try and think of some media based ones so people have an idea of the dynamics I like (I guess???) It’s embarrassing bc I have way, way more notps than otps.
Player x Partner in Mystery Dungeon
(Particularly Rescue / Explorers / Gates)
Is this a cop-out answer? Am I going to get called names for this one?
I know the whole thing is framed as a really strong friendship, but the absolute devotion the partner has for the player is really sweet. It doesn’t help that they ALWAYS have a moment where the player character “has to go” and you see how absolutely distraught the partner is at seeing them turn into little lights and be erased from existence. It’s okay, though, because they always come back.
They’re an inseparable team, so maybe they can also kiss, as a treat.
Don’t get me wrong, though, I don’t always do ‘shippy’ playthroughs of my PMD games. Sometimes I really am just content with them being friends, you know? But other times it’s just REALLY easy to give them OC names to fill the roles.
Maki x Kaito (From Danganronpa V3)
This game has an absolutely ridiculous ending, like DR2, but I think these two are really sweet together. Elaborating would kind of spoil some of the plot, but basically he’s a motivational goof and she’s stone cold and they both have something to hide.
Wall-E x Eve

Currently Reading: I really wish I did more reading. The last book I read was Legends & Lattes by Travis Baldree, which I really enjoyed (And read in one sitting on the plane). It’s high fantasy with a literal coffee shop AU setting. Its ... soft. Oh, and that has a naturally progressing romance between two of the main girls - another ship that I like! Yay!
Last Movie: I’m going to see the new Mario movie this weekend, but the last thing I watched was The Brave Little Toaster, and for the first time. It was a trip, but I still enjoyed watching it.
Craving: I have a sore throat and could really go for some icecream right now :(

2022 was challenging.
That doesn’t mean it was the worst. I think there was improvement from 2021, but it was still a difficult year. I’m doing my New Year’s Speech even earlier this time, at about 9-going-on-10.
I got a job this year. I got covid. I lost my job. My diet slipped. I failed my driving test. ... But I booked a new one, and I got another job, both in January of next year. I’ve tried and failed in many aspects. But I learned a lot, too, and I can use that to push forward.
My novel has somewhat fallen by the wayside, but I’m going to strive to discipline myself and make some progress. A friend of my mother’s gave me some writing advice, and a deadline of July to complete my first draft. I’m not sure if this will be the motivation I need, but I have to give writing books a serious attempt if that’s what I want out of life. I do need time to process and develop things, but I can’t sit around doing nothing, either.
Positively speaking, however - I may still have a delicate stomach, but I’ve stopped coughing up gross stuff every day. It went away as mysteriously as it started 5 or so years ago. I’m very glad of that!
Videogames this year have been ... generally lackluster on the Pokemon front, because they’re pushing out so many so quickly that they’re neglecting quality. Arceus was good, yes, but ending the year with ScarVio makes me think it could’ve used some more time in the oven. Splatoon 3 is also pretty bad multiplayer-wise, but the story mode is solid. As for other companies, I really enjoyed RF5, and I’m eagerly anticipating the upcoming AWL remake.
I’m also going to Florida (and Disney!!) for what will be the third time after twenty years in 2023, as well as meeting with a friend, and I’m very excited about that.
I’m looking forward to the things I can overcome, the joys I might experience, and forging stability in 2023. And I wish you all a Happy New Year!

Three fun facts about me:
I never learnt how to swim properly ... I was pretty good at diving though!
When I was 13-ish I made a webseries by editing Harvest Moon sprites and overlaying them with text, inspired by one of my then-friends who had a similar series. It’s called Pansy Quest, and it’s very poorly made. While it’s no longer canon to Pansy’s lore, I haven’t taken it down.
It’s difficult for me to seem excited about things irl. I am of course pleased, or grateful, but for example when I got my results for uni I was kinda just like. ‘Nice!’ and my family was expecting some bigger reaction... Meanwhile, new releases of games I want make me go eeee!
Favourite season: Springtime is my favourite! The warm sun and colourful flowers really improve my mood. I like Autumn too because it brings relief after Summer, but there’s a melancholy that comes with it.
Continent where I live: Europe
How I spend my time: Work, gaming, writing things that aren’t my main project ... I’ve been really struggling with the book I’m meant to be writing. I either don’t have time, or feel like writing something completely unrelated. It’s a struggle. Oh, I draw too!
Are you published?: Yes, actually - but only very small-scale. I have a few published poems via competitons, and worked with my university to publish a poetry anthology that has my name on the cover! This isn’t my end goal though. I aim to actually have a full book of my own prose get published someday.
Introvert or Extrovert: Introvert, definitely
Favourite Meal: Chicken Katsu Curry and Aloe Water from specific restaurants is the winner at the moment! I like curry that has potato and carrot in. Everywhere seems to have their own spin on it, though.

Tag Game
I got tagged by @emeraldhaze15 and decided to make a new post instead of adding to the length of the original, heheh. Thanks for the tag! I think I maybe did this one a long time ago.
Favourite Colour: I love light shades of yellow - I usually claim this one as ‘Custard Yellow’
Currently Reading: oh man 💀 I would really like to read the backlog of books under my bed, but I’d have to sacrifice time doing other things for it. BUT. I am reading a friend’s WIP story to help with a few edits! That counts, right?
Last Song: *checks youtube history* Looks like it was Feels by Calvin Harris, though I distinctly remember starting the song and not actually getting to listen to it. So the REAL last song would be ... ages ago, apparently ... a Danganronpa Remix by Neraki.
Last Series: Since I don’t binge-watch TV series or watch much TV in general, I’m going to interpret this as ‘what was the last game series you touched’, and that was Rune Factory, because I played RF5 this morning.
Last Movie: Last weekend I watched the third Aladdin film (King of Thieves) for the first time, with a friend. It was alright. I think the relationships were written well, although Genie’s dialogue suffered a bit. Better than the second imo, but not quite as good as the first.
Sweet/Spicy/Savoury: I like my salt and I like my sugar, but I prefer to keep my spice to a minimum. Katsu Curry is my favourite thing to eat, but that’s because it’s a tolerable heat! If I had to choose one to eat forever, I’d probably go with savoury, but I’d go through extreme sugar withdrawals because I can’t do without. I like to eat!! 🍝🍨
Currently Working On: I’m working on my book, Racing Pulse, but I’m trying to push through a difficult part of the narrative right now. I’m hoping I can focus on getting it finished instead of worrying about the content too much, because I can go back and re-draft if it doesn’t come out how I want. But getting that through my head isn’t simple. Writing is hard!

(Because it slaps - be cautioned if you look into the anime, it’s got a lot of booby)

So about 2021...
It’s time for my annual New Year’s Speech! It’s about half past eleven.
Yeah, so uh, 2021 huh.
This year wasn’t fun. It was like we were still in 2020, but kind of worse because we spent the entire year stuck in the same crisis. I was in a bit of a rut, and I made little to no progress on my novel. But that doesn’t mean there weren’t highlights.
For example, Miitopia came out on the Switch, and Miitopia was already a masterpiece, so playing that in HD was a major inspiration for me! There were some other cool announcements this year too that I’m excited for, and the Diamond and Pearl remakes were released only a few months ago. AND SORA ARRIVED IN SMASH. To top it off, Pokemon Center started delivering to the UK! That’s a really big step! Maybe these are shallow things to get excited about, but it’s the sort of thing that makes me happy, and that’s what matters.
As far as progress goes, there is something I started in 2021 that I’m proud of. It may have taken awhile, but I finally started driving lessons! I’m midway through them now, and I’ll be taking my theory test in a few weeks. I don’t exactly ... like driving, but I’m pleased I’ve come this far after being terrified of it (and terrified of using the bus some years ago too). I also realised I’m still sorting through my feelings about a lot of personal things; relationships and anxieties and the like, but I think giving myself due time to process them will help immensely--that sounds simple, but it’s something that I initially wanted to rush. I’m going to try and be patient with myself from now on.
My wish for 2020 was that the end of 2021, things would’ve improved, if only a little. I can’t say I’m in perfect spirits--I’m rather tired of the pandemic, honestly, and of learning how to ‘adult’. But I’m looking forward to the good things that’ll come out of 2022, and aiming to improve myself to the best of my ability. IN STEPS. PATIENTLY.
