#let’s change it once in a while^^ Shinichi can be very protective
gisachi · 3 years
Note
Hi ^^ I know that your requests are now closed but I was thinking that, given you have written jealous Shinichi, I would very much enjoy some jealous Ran! Maybe you can mix it with one of the prompts? Just throwing the idea out there, no pressure. Delete this if you don't feel like it, it's okay really. Thank you for writing these amazing fics, the shinran fandom is in your debt. ❤️
So this is the last (!!!) and longest (!!!) of the kiss prompts, and I dedicate it to multiple-requests Anon and to this Anon. I hope both of you still see this. It took me a while. ^^;;
P.S. Special thanks to @artycreaty for keeping this in check. You are awesome. 🥰

Ran keeps telling herself she has no right to be jealous.
She has hundreds of reasons not to. They’re merely childhood best friends. Life would be much easier if she didn’t involve herself in his business twenty-four seven. Shinichi absolutely doesn’t look at her that way. And so forth.
She wonders why they’re even friends in the first place. If their parents hadn’t enrolled them in the same kindergarten, she was certain they wouldn’t even be on speaking terms. He lives in a world of grisly books and crimes, she in a world of martial and visual arts. Their hobbies don’t overlap. They excel in different fields. They enter the same university with completely unrelated majors. The only bond they have in common is their shared history. Literally bonded since they were four, until now at nineteen.
So when she sees him all jolly around his newfound circle who hold the same interest in Holmes or detective work, it shouldn’t surprise her as much. It’s part of university life, it’s normal, they expand their horizons, and Ran understands that it hits much differently when they bond with people who like the same stuff they do. Something she’s aware they cannot share a hundred percent.
She’s proud of him, and she absolutely has no right to feel jealous, especially when she sees him around taller, prettier, more interesting women from his course block. There is no reason for her to look away with a heavy weight in her chest everytime the women get giggly and touchy while he’s absorbed in narrating his stories.
Everytime she does, she reminds herself of how he didn’t seem to mind when she was casted as the protagonist of their high school play and the leading man was the handsome Araide-sensei. Or how he simply shrugged when she fawned over the brother of a classmate because he looked so much like the karate senpai she was crushing on. Or when she secretly caught Sonoko dragging the detective behind gym after P.E. to confront him about his opinion regarding an upperclassman courting Ran and his only response was, ‘She can like whoever she likes, Sonoko. I’m not her boyfriend.’
He never showed her any sign of jealousy, therefore he must not be into her. Simple as that. So it’s unfair for her to be treating him differently. Getting snarky just because he received sixteen new fan mails again, more now that they’re in uni, and two even coming from the popular criminology seniors he is often teased to? Or ignoring him unprecedentedly just because his eyes followed the back of a woman with long chestnut hair and voluptuous curves? There are plenty of fish in the sea, and he’s bound to be attracted to someone else. This is a pill she ought to learn to swallow eventually.
Eventually.
“Shinichi-kun, you never told us about your scariest case yet, tell us about it?”
Kaori closes her notes and so do the other two girls across her, and Shinichi’s eyes twinkle. He truly seems to enjoy study sessions with the little group they made consisting of some of his and Ran’s coursemates because they love listening to his stories.
“At the top of my head is this murderer disguised as a bandaged man, and he targeted us one by one…” and so the detective drones. Ran pauses typing and reminisces quietly. Ah, that one from summer three years ago. I was almost injured by that crazy man during my sleep but Shinichi woke me up in time.
“Ran-san,” Shun, her friend and coursemate, mutters beside her, also stopping his typing to listen to the detective’s story. “It’s ridiculous how popular Kudou-kun is with the girls. He’s full of wild adventures.”
“Yes, he is,” Ran says, smiling. “He’s been a girl magnet ever since high school.”
She watches as Kaori inches closer to Shinichi, listening attentively, chin on her palm and flirtatious smile on her lips as the detective rants on and on.
For the third time that afternoon, Ran looks away.
.
.
Ran keeps telling herself she has no right to be jealous.
She does, everyday, but it’s hard when he smiles at her, cares for her, holds her in a way she’s never seen him do for anyone else. It gives her hope every time the girls cling to him but he never touches them back, whereas he automatically slings his arm over her shoulder because she’s afraid or cold or he simply feels like it.
Then again, maybe she’s giving herself too much credit. Perhaps it’s a free pass for being around him for too long. She even gets to spend time with him during weekends and holidays. It isn’t special because it’s normal.
And that’s all she’ll ever be, a normal girl in his eyes.
“Ran? She’s pretty special.”
Ran reacts to the mention of her name and catches Shinichi looking at her. “She appears quiet but she can kick anyone’s ass without breaking a sweat. It’s bad if you cross her,” Shinichi gloats with a grin.
“Oh my god, really? We can bring her with us then!” Kaori claps her hands in excitement.
“Ah... But she won’t like that,” he follows up, wary. Ran has missed the topic they were talking about and now she’s curious.
“But ghosts aren’t real and Mouri-san can give them a good beating!”
“Gh-Ghosts?” The color in her cheeks drains, eyes freezing at Shinichi who has probably already expected that reaction, for he sports that same look of concern as those times he had expressed whenever she joined him in his way-past-bedtime elementary school adventures.
“We’ll investigate an abandoned house I always pass by walking home,” Kaori explains. “Last night I saw a faint cigarette light at the second floor window. It might be a fugitive or a homeless person or a ghost, who knows?”
“You don’t need to come if you don’t want to, Ran,” Shinichi assures.
Gulping, Ran contemplates whether going with them will do her any good. It’s a nice change, it’s been a while since she last tagged with Shinichi in his cases. But she isn’t exactly proud of shrieking like a little kid in front of serious criminology majors who may feel like she’ll drag their covert investigation down if she joins.
“...I’ll pass,” she answers meekly, and his coursemates sulk except Shinichi, who offers her a smile of understanding.
“Man, I thought we’ll be able to see Mouri-san in action!”
“That’s ok, maybe next time. We still have Shinichi-kun!”
“Shinichi-kun will protect us, ne?”
“Hah. Right. Invite Hakuba too, use him.”
“Oh c’mooon, Shinichi-kun!”
Ran closes her eyes, struggling to zone their voices out.
In her silence, Ran ponders if she has made a wrong choice.
.
.
Ran has no right to be jealous. So it’s unfair for her to be treating him this way.
The following weekend, Shinichi narrates what happened in their late-night investigation. Hakuba wasn’t there so Shinichi was the only available guy as usual. Ran refuses to hear any more details, both of the haunted house and secretly of the girls chancing onto him during the investigation. Shinichi is puzzled.
“Did I do something wrong?”
“Nah, just swamped with work.”
“On a Sunday?”
“Yes.”
“Want me to assist?”
“No.”
Her replies are curt from the couch of his house, not looking at Shinichi on the other end as she mindlessly cleans up her digital sketches. She hates how snappy she sounds but her brain is too absorbed with conjuring spiteful imaginations to even think of masking her annoyance.
“Ran, hey. Look at me.”
His low voice freezes her from drawing, and she slowly looks up to meet Shinichi’s serious eyes.
When this happens, she knows he’s reading her. She inwardly chants a prayer because now isn’t a good time. Whatever time isn’t a good time. She doesn’t know what to say when she’s aware everything she’s been feeling is irrational and unfair. She’s being selfish.
“You’re… stressed.”
“No, I’m… Eh?”
He scoots closer, an arm’s length away. “Your dark circles are more prominent now, you need a break.” His eyes turn a soft blue. “Let’s have dinner out? My treat.”
Ran is surprised, to say the least. The last time he invited her out was two weeks ago. She’s become so used to seeing him around others that any initiative from him sounds too good to be true.
“But I need to finish this project by tonight.”
“Let’s have food delivery then!” Shinichi announces, not rattled by Ran’s indirect refusal. “I know exactly what you want. Ramen and shaved ice.”
Her eyes thin at the absurdly goofy expression she knows he makes when he’s being mischievous. “Clearly you’re ordering that ramen for yourself. I only like shaved ice.”
“Damn! Miss Detective gets it.” A mile-wide grin stretches across his face, earning an eye roll from the half-smiling woman. “Let’s eat together on your short break, please?”
He leans within a respectful distance and she sees his smile better, pair of kind eyes locking with her overworked ones. “It’s been a while.”
Her heart throbs for him. So much.
She caves - of course she does - and breathes her acquiescence.
After two long weeks, they have dinner together, just them and Shinichi’s ramen and Ran’s donburi and shaved ice, Shinichi taking a spoonful of dessert from the cup when she isn’t looking and Ran snatching a slurp from his take-out bowl and laughing when he catches her.
With how heartfelt his laughter is in her presence devoid of any mysteries, Ran knows she’s probably giving herself too much credit, but for once she wants to believe she is the cause of why Shinichi’s happy.
Just for that night, she gives it to herself.
She’ll change the dark colors of her digital artwork to brighter ones after they eat.
.
.
Despite everything, Ran finds it difficult to contain her recurring jealousy.
The more she shares precious time with him, the more it gets harder to suppress the selfish emotions. What is so unsatisfying about being the best friend is that she is only the best friend. No more no less. At the end of the day, she isn’t the one he gets to cuddle with, to tease then kiss, to tell ‘I love you’ to, romantically.
“I love you.”
Ran feels her heart about to leap out of her chest.
“But please. Stop. Tearing. The. Cushions!”
The little furball he has scooped underneath a throw pillow wiggle from his grasp. The kitten and detective engage in a brief staring showdown before it jumps away to hide under a farther couch.
Snapping out of reverie, Ran watches her childhood friend slink dejectedly onto the partly scratched furniture. He’s fortunate enough that his mother isn’t around to give him a long lecture on Why Pets Aren’t Allowed in the House 101. She can always take Yukiko-san’s role and reprimand him for it, but as for this and the cat, she finds herself not wanting to intervene.
“Kaori-san sure is taking her time with her parent’s permission. By the time she does, Momo would’ve shredded all the pillows in this house.”
“You named the cat?” Ran asks, amused.
“She did.” He thinks for a moment, then sniggers. “Actually I did. I suggested a random name. She took it.”
Ran merely hums. What can she say? They’re getting close. Close enough to team up as parents to an adopted kitten.
“I’m surprised you also agreed to keep Momo when you never took in animals before.”
“Kaori said she’ll treat me to the latest Detective Samonji movie this weekend if I do. Can’t resist that.”
“Just you two?”
“Yeah.”
A beat. Then he turns to her.
“Wanna join? I can ask her to count you in since you’re kinda helpi—”
“N-no need,” Ran quips, “It’s—It’s fine.”
“No really,” Shinichi insists, “Kaori-san has a lot of money, she—”
“I’m going to Tokyo Metropolitan Art Museum with Shun-san this weekend... so... I can’t.”
“Ah.”
Silence.
“It’s, um, for a project,” she bolsters.
“I know.” The faintest smile graces his lips. “It’s your thing. Both of you.”
“Mm.”
He doesn’t say anything else after that.
“Shinichi, you’re a detective, right?” she blurts out of the blue.
“Yeah...and?”
Then deduce what I feel. Here and now.
“Then you’re going to enjoy that movie!” Ran forces a beam, giving Shinichi a thumb of approval. “And you can discuss it with Kaori-san over dinner. I’m sure you two have a lot to say about it.”
Shinichi’s eyes linger on her, reading her like a book, and Ran has her mind reeling again, afraid to be read.
“Yeah, we do,” he finally says, ending the conversation.
Only a few words are uttered the rest of the afternoon.
Momo resurfaces and curls beside Shinichi.
Momo’s purring is loud, but Ran’s shattering heart is louder.
.
.
Ran must not feel jealous. She is not a girlfriend.
Because she isn’t a girlfriend, he’s free to fall for and date anyone else. Who is she to gatekeep him? There are plenty of fish in the sea, and he’s one big catch. Ran believes she’s a big catch, too. With the way she loves dearly, her future boyfriend is going to be very lucky.
Her future boyfriend is not going to be him.
“...mber the required fieldwork in one of my majors I told you? We actually go by batches. The first batch did theirs last month. The second batch was last week… and I— Ran, are you listening?”
“Ah! Yes,” Ran notices they have already reached her station and are now walking two blocks to her apartment. “Your fieldwork, right?”
“...Yeah,” he carries on. “I’m in the last batch... This whole winter break.”
“I see, I understand.” She smiles, getting what he means. No Christmas or New Year’s Eve together. The first time since they’re four. It’s fine, honestly. If it’s a required activity, then there’s really no way to go about it. She isn’t going to lash out just because she can’t be with him in her most favorite time of the year.
“And Hattori-kun and Hakuba-kun will be with you?”
“Hattori did his last month. Hakuba is in the previous batch. I’ll be stuck with the girls.”
Ran’s heart momentarily squeezes. “Where will your fieldwork be?”
“In Akita.”
Her pupils constrict. “That far?”
“Yes... so to cut on expenses, Kaori-san offered her house for me and the others to stay while we’re there—”
Kaori. Again with the tall, beautiful, intelligent Kaori. She bets it’s amazing to spend the holidays doing what he loves and with Kaori beside her, snuggling with him by the fireplace in a romantic snowy night and she might even confess, and it’ll be a great catch for Shinichi, and he’ll return with a girlfriend, and—
“Kaori-san is lucky.” The words flow out of her mouth, unbridled.
Shinichi looks at her. “Lucky?”
Ran remains quiet and keeps walking. It’s dangerous to say anything. She only has one thing in her mind and she doesn’t want to say it out loud. She has no right.
“Ran, hey.”
She doesn’t stop walking.
“Ran.”
She ignores his call.
“Ran… you’re jealous.”
She stops walking.
“Excuse me?”
“...You’re jealous…” Shinichi repeats quietly.
A contrast to his calm tone, his irises beset hers in the cold twilight and Ran attempts to shield herself but her bag and umbrella are in the way. She thinks of turning away but her feet are frigid like icicles, and Shinichi steps closer.
For the third time, he declares, “You’re jealous.”
Hearing her thoughts echo through his words renders her speechless.
It seems to take a moment before Shinichi’s brow arches, lips curl up as his eyes refuse to stray, and she hears a faint exhale even, like he’s exasperated, and suddenly he’s smiling - or is he smirking? sneering? - and...and...
It stings, is her immediate reaction.
For the longest time, she’d wanted him to take a hint. But if she had known this was how he’d react, she’d rather live a life having him oblivious of her emotional struggle. Dealing with that is more tolerable than witnessing him gaze her down in blatant mockery. He sneers as though he’s about to crack a joke and move on and forget such a laughable matter. That’s the last form of acknowledgment she wants for her honest feelings.
Heartbreak and shame and pain build up in her chest like a volcano closing eruption. Water begins to cloud her vision. She clenches her fist tight on her umbrella and Shinichi notices, and he takes another step forward.
“Ran…?”
“I am not, and you’re a fool.”
In a span of a breath, she’s sprinting in the opposite direction, tracing the path where they have walked, ignoring the distant yells of her name behind her. She runs and runs, and as she runs farther, with her thoughts muddy and breath short and dry, she wonders if she may have overreacted.
If he’s done that on purpose, screw him. If not, screw her.
After all, they are merely friends and she has no logical reason to act this way.
“Stop... running... will you!”
She hears heavy footsteps close in. It takes all the energy Ran has to prevent herself from turning her body around but his strong grip overpowers her.
“Let me go!”
“Why are you running?!”
“I can’t...deal with you!”
“Why? Was I right?”
“Right or wrong, it doesn’t matter!”
“Why doesn’t it matter?”
“Because I am your best friend!”
On another occasion, she would’ve successfully jilted away and run farther, but Ran is floored when he yanks her into a one-armed hug, so floored she drops her umbrella to the snowy ground.
“Stop saying that!” he hisses in her ear, frustration apparent.
“What are you— Let me go!”
He hugs her tighter.
“If you don’t let go in three seconds, I will screa—”
“I am happy!”
Ran stops struggling, eyes widening in shock.
Icy huffs tickle her neck as he half shouts, “I’m happy you feel that way!”
“You’re...You’re happy because I’m suffering?”
“What? No! I—”
“Is that supposed to make me feel better? How?” The hurt in her tone is impeccable, prattling muffled against his chest as she spares him no moment to butt in. “You think I wanted to feel this? That I enjoy griping in helpless jealousy? And you’re rejoicing that I am? How full of yourself can you be?!”
“That’s not...You don’t underst—”
“I do understand! I understand that I am so incredibly stupid for catching this disgusting heap of emotions for an obnoxious, stuck-up deduction maniac that is my best friend and maybe it’s better after all that he never, ever sees me the way I see him!”
“Stop saying that, Ran!”
She thinks he has broken away, but he drags her back with an insistent tug, crashing his lips onto hers as she stumbles into his arms.
All willpower rippling through her disintegrates quickly like snow in high heat.
An impatient pop resonates as he separates, eyes slowly opening, breath thick and ragged.
“I know that is not how we explain things, but does that explain anything?”
She hears it. The madness. But more than madness, yearning bleeds through his voice so much that her frustration turns into physical pain. Blinded by an all-consuming ache, she tips her chin and presses her lips back against his, demanding for cure in the wrong place. Shinichi freezes, then relaxes. He moves his hand to her nape, four fingers in her hair, thumb treading her jaw.
They look like a scene in a movie.
Under his umbrella and hidden from view, they communicate through brushing lips and tilting heads. His mouth closing over hers with gentle force, her hands splaying across his chest, heavy with something that makes his heart pound under them.
She is so lost in the chase and his tender embrace that for a second she forgets she is kissing her best friend.
Best friend.
This doesn’t explain anything. It worsens it.
She pulls back, ending what she has so recklessly started. “N-no, I’m— No.”
She pushes him away, gathers the stuff she drops, and runs without looking back.
“Ran!”
He shouts her name. Twice.
On the third call, his footfalls die down. On the fourth, he stops running.
She doesn’t.
.
.
Thirty minutes before midnight, Ran stands outside his gate, boots buried half foot under the snow as she rings his intercom for the second time, thinking to herself how foolish she must be to cut communications with him for a week and then show up his doorstep looking miserable like a stood-up date.
It’s the start of winter break.
He’ll leave for Akita in ten hours.
She needs to give his Christmas present before his departure.
She’s crazy, pathetic, still frustrated, and hurtfully in love.
“Oi. You better have a good explanation for why you’re buzzing at goddamn midnig—”
“Shinichi.”
His surprised gasp is apparent even through the intercom. A rustle follows and with a croaky voice, he responds. “...Ran.”
Surely he isn’t expecting this. Not after the tantrum she threw days ago. He probably thinks she hates him more than ever. But what she truly feels is more overwhelming than all negative emotions combined, and may god grant her all the strength to address it all, tonight.
“May I come in?”
“The house is—The house is a mess I, um. I’m packing my stuff for...”
“I’ll help you.”
“...”
She’ll understand if he decides to turn her down. But the answer that follows the deafening pause is a low and quiet ‘Okay’.
Despite psyching herself hours before she came, courage wanes when he opens the front door and gate in his pullovers. She is welcomed in, and the trip up his room is wordless. Shinichi only talks when he points out that he’s already packed clothes for two days and will need help for two weeks’ worth. He lamely laughs when he instructs her to pick the tops and layers, and he’ll take care of the pants and underwear.
On a normal instance, she would’ve humored him and they would’ve been talking right after. Now she simply pulls an empty smile and then they fall back into silence.
She supposes he’s trying to act unbothered, to treat what happened a week ago as a one-and-done glitch in their friendship, never to be discussed again. She cannot fault him when she’s trying to do the same. But it’s not easy when in the stillness of the night the echo of their altercation howls, raging persistently in their ears.
What has he been thinking of for the past week?
Has he been kept up all night by the words she said and the words he left unspoken?
Are they still friends? Will they still be friends after this?
The kiss... What about the kiss?
So many questions. So little words. So little time.
Ran is seated on the floor, folding shirts and stuffing them neatly in his duffel bag. Her back faces Shinichi who is sorting out bottoms in his cabinet. She senses him sit on the floor, back against her but not touching. Neither dares to speak first.
A ringing phone cuts the silence.
“Mm, still awake. Good for two weeks right? Gotcha. No, I’ll meet you girls at the station, no need to fetch me. Pfft. I can walk. Ok, see you tomorrow.”
If Ran wasn’t so hyperaware of where she is and what she’s done, her mood would’ve shifted to the one she’d been trying to avoid. Now isn’t the time to think about that. Midnight sneaking out to go to his house is something she wouldn’t do even on good days. She scans her bag on the far couch, deliberately bringing a bigger one to hide his gift. Maybe she can just sneak it in his bag and leave once she’s done and he’ll discover it only when he’s prefectures away. Brown has always suited him, and he’ll definitely find the overcoat useful as spare protective gear.
That’s right. She always cares for him like this. She is his best friend first, and... and nothing second.
“Don’t just leave after putting your present in my bag. At this hour, I can’t let you walk home alone,” he says swiftly.
Ran’s eyes fly wide.
“How did you…”
He doesn’t say anything and continues with his business.
Again with the throat-drying silence.
Something in Ran’s gut compels her to speak, but she is surprised when he does first.
“I... I don’t like Kaori-san. If that’s what you’re thinking.”
Ran stiffens, pausing mid-motion from folding. “I’m not…”
He leans his back completely against her and she shudders, voice reverberating through her skin. “Ran, if you could just hear me out.”
Unable to talk and move, she does.
“Kaori-san and the rest... They know I love mysteries. They know I want to build my own private detective agency. They know my favorite Holmes’ story is The Sign of Four. They know how many crimes I solved in Tokyo. All the information about me which anyone can read from the internet and newspaper and from what I told them when they ask, they know. Ran, you know all that. All that and more.”
He angles his head to the ceiling as if he’s talking to someone there. Ran supports his weight, curling to her knees as she silently listens.
“You know of my first ever deduction because Christ, my first deduction was about you. You know of the two cases which haunt me until this day because I watched the culprit die in front of my very eyes. You were with me the nights I locked myself in here thinking about them. You know of the interesting, the boring, the absurd cases, everything, because I told you or you were there. You know of the odd way I play the violin while I ponder over a case. You know I forget to eat when swamped with new books to read. I have three copies of The Sign of Four but the one I keep beside my bed and read almost weekly is the one you gave me on my tenth birthday and that is all I need. You know me for me, Ran. Everything about me that is off the record, the good and the bad, you know all of those. Only you. The same way I do... about you.”
She feels him crane slightly to the side, addressing her.
“Ran.”
“Mm.”
“I love you.”
Ran’s heart almost completely stops beating.
“I love you,” he whispers, “more than I am even supposed to.”
All words seem to have fizzled out of her vocabulary as she sits still, stunned at what she’s hearing.
“I’m happy growing up with you, studying with you, bickering with you, acting stupid with you, investigating with you, eating with you, napping with you, hugging you, holding you, taking care of you, simply... being with you. Before I know it, it’s not the cases or Holmes or mysteries that complete my days, it’s you.
“For you to keep repeating that ‘best friend’ phrase, I…” He lowers his head.
“For who knows how long, I’ve loved you as that and more.”
Someone pinch her because in no way can this be real.
“I was happy thinking you’re jealous because it meant a sliver of chance you feel the same way. We could’ve remedied the misunderstanding easily, Ran. We could’ve talked it over like we always do. But I was stupid and emotions were high and in the end I… kissed you…” he takes another deep breath, “But—but you kissed me back, and my heart couldn’t stay still...”
Pulse drumming loud, Ran tilts her head on the side where he leans, wanting to see the slightest expression he makes as he continues.
“If my deductions are wrong and you’re mad for a different reason, and—and you returned that for a different reason...” she hears the pang of remorse in his tone, “then please forget I ever said anything and I’ll leave myself to die in humiliation once I’m out of your sight.”
He lays one palm flat on the floor and she notices.
“But if my deductions are right and you were indeed jealous, I...” She feels his head swivel enough to feel his warm breath fan across her cheek, before shifting back front and releasing a slow, guttural exhale he’s kept contained within.
“I’ll wait... until you accept it. Accept me.”
Ran may have choked on her throat for how long she’s held her breath.
In spite of herself, she knows she doesn’t need to think of what to say. She had it all in her head before coming here. Yet expressing it out loud is a different matter.
She isn’t ready, but when will she ever be ready? Shinichi undoubtedly isn’t too. Yet here he is, laying the groundwork for her, no holds barred and a stuttering mess at that. How she plans to build from it is the question she asks herself next.
Inhaling as though bracing herself, she places a hand beside him, pinky slightly grazing his.
“I didn’t... You never showed any signs.”
Careful and calm, he extends his little finger over hers. She doesn’t flinch, and both hands crawl closer until two fingers overlap.
“Either I’m a great pretender or you’re incredibly dense.”
“I’m...I’m not dense.”
“I’m a bad actor, then.” He slides his hand further.
“I was trying so hard to be a supportive best friend for you.”
“I sensed that but ignored it because I didn’t want to assume anything.”
“You did though. Now we’re here.”
“Would you rather we aren’t?”
“I would rather we spend the last weeks of this year talking like normal than being stupid idiots before you leave.”
“It’s just two weeks, Ran.”
“Two special weeks I would’ve wanted to spend with my best frien-... with you.”
Without knowing it, his hand has completely nestled atop hers, four fingers curled between her thumb and index finger.
“Ran... You must really hate the idea of falling in love with me.”
“Eh?”
“You’re so wrapped with the thought that we’re simply best friends that you hold your love in chains as though it isn’t permitted to grow.”
“I… I didn’t want to ruin the only connection we have-”
“Two friends falling in love are still friends… They are also more. You cannot ruin an indefeasible connection. Friendship and love may be the only bond we have, but they’re the most important bond of all.”
Ran falls quiet.
“Geez…”
He releases a thick sigh, brushes his thumb across her splayed fingers.
“I have shit art appreciation skills, but I can take you to museums too... as a friend and as a date.” A beat, and a mumble. “Even to better museums than Tokyo Metropolitan Art Museum.”
She darts her head sideways, realizing something.
“Were you also…?”
“No.”
Ran doesn’t suppress the heartfelt giggle that bubbles out.
“Shun-san has a boyfriend, Shinichi.”
“I—” he pauses. “I wasn’t asking.” Ran giggles more.
“Shinichi.”
“Yes.”
“I love you too.”
The hand above squishes hers all too suddenly like he’s been blown away and is needing something to hold onto.
“I came here to give your present and to apologize for being so shallow and for acting without thinking and for a lot of things actually... but now I feel there’s no need, because then I wouldn’t have...” She looks down at their intertwined hands.
Before she can return his squeeze, he recoils.
“Oh, y-you do apologize. Running away like that.” He coughs, and she can practically hear the tripping in his tone.
“Aren’t you already used to it? I’ve done it many times,” she chides.
“No. Apologize,” he insists. “And look at me while you do.”
Ran’s stomach twists, heart kicking up a step.
It’s easy to talk without eye contact, but to be requested so after confessions are exchanged—
“Face me, Ran.”
The familiar voice of yearning strums her heartstrings, tone sounding a lot like a plea than an order and Ran finds her head instinctively craning at an angle, hand coiling on the floor trying to calm her nervous beating heart. She feels him shift behind as well.
She takes all her time to face him, partly unsure what to do, partly knowing exactly what she wants to do. Despite the deliberate slowness of their movements, it is when they lock eyes that time truly seems to stop.
Shinichi appears so different, so soulful. His blue irises glimmering, fixated on nothing but her as she reveres him with matching intensity. The same guy she treats as her best friend looks at her with tender love in his eyes, darting down her lips and up like no best friend ever would.
“I love you,” he says, breathless. “Make me your boyfriend.”
A wave of emotion sweeps over her, heartbeat fluttering in overdrive as they huddle on the floor, bags and clothes and time forgotten.
“From best friend to... such a shift-”
“Nothing will be different.” He rests his forehead on hers, gaze of soft blue patient though more intimate now, knowing what they share is mutual. “We’ll still do what we do... With exclusive romantic commitment and sweet nothings that translate to ‘I love you’ in more ways than one.”
She attempts a jab on his chest but he catches her fist, soft but jesting beam all too apparent and she does but play along.
“What about when we fight?” she asks.
“Same. But...” he slides a thumb over her quiet lips, parting them slightly, “I can do this once we make up.”
“...Like right now?”
“Like right now.”
A genuine smile is the last thing she sees before delicate pair of lips lands on hers, capping their one-week fight and their last night of the year together in the best and most unexpected way imaginable.
.

Ran keeps telling herself she shouldn’t be jealous.
Not because they are simply best friends, because they aren’t. Not because life would be easier if she didn’t involve herself in his business twenty-four seven, because it wouldn’t.
Not because Shinichi doesn’t look at her that way, because he does.
She shouldn’t be jealous because she absolutely has no reason to, is all.
“I haven’t forgotten about your present. I was planning to buy yours in Akita.”
“Stop lying, you totally forgot it.”
“I didn’t. Stop that.” Half-mast eyes rake her side profile, and Ran covers a mirthful grin with her mitted hand holding the umbrella, then yawns. Hours of packing and talking and laughing left them with roughly four hours of sleep. It isn’t like she slept the whole period because while sleeping in his room isn’t new, cuddling while they sleep is. Ran couldn’t simply shut her eyes and heart to that.
“I believe though,” he wraps a hand around her free one, pocketing both of them in his brand new overcoat, “I gave half of my present already.”
“Hnn. That doesn’t count as a gift.” Her hand shifted, coddling his own to a warm fit.
“Really?” A smug smirk pulls up his face. “I believe I am a nice present, Ran. That’s why they—”
“Screw this. You are unbelievable. A humbug. Why do people like you.”
“I know. Why do you like me?” Shinichi laughs as he avoids the swing of her umbrella.
From afar, they see Kaori and the girls at the meet-up point outside Tokyo Station, though they seem unaware of their presence yet. Suddenly feeling conscious, Ran feels the urge to disentangle her hand, but Shinichi holds on, firm.
“Why?” He asks in a low voice.
“I dunno… maybe this isn’t the best time…”
“Isn’t now the best time?” His smile is proud and natural, not one ounce of reluctance visible.
Although she gets what he means, that doesn’t free her of shyness and guilt. Somehow she feels like apologizing to Kaori for… she doesn’t know. She just wants to. Letting her see them like this makes her think that she’s giving her an indirect slap on the face. Shinichi certainly won’t agree because ‘What’s with women and their logic?’, but still, whether or not it’s all in her head, Ran needs more time to prepare for this.
But to her surprise, Shinichi lets go of her hand. They are still a few feet from view when he steps in front of her and turns around. “Maah, fine, I get it,” he huffs, then smiles. “Then, just give me your umbrella.”
The moment she does, Shinichi closes their distance and dips his face onto hers. Ran is given no leeway to gasp as loving lips seal her quiet. It isn’t as long as what they shared a week ago, but the emotions are loaded and full, speaking fond thanks and temporary farewell.
She doesn’t realize she has closed her eyes until he separates, and she’s met with the most tender, most angelic expression he wears only on the rarest occasions. He’s saying without telling that her feelings are valid, she doesn’t have to worry,  and he doesn’t have eyes for anyone but her. Somehow, the snow is the sea and fish are swarming around but neither cares because they have already caught each other.
“You don’t have to, silly.” Three layers of pink blanket Ran’s puffy cheeks.
“But I want to.” Grinning, Shinichi hands her back the umbrella. “You don’t like hand-holding. You don’t like being seen. Don’t you think that’s a great compromise?”
“Idiot, many people saw...”
“No, they didn’t!” Upping the duffel bag slung on his shoulder, he steps back and gives her one last goofy beam. “I’ll see you next year, Ran. I’ll call as often as I can.”
Wordlessly, Ran watches Shinichi’s back as he jogs to his waiting companions, who by then have already had their eyes pinned on the approaching figure.
“That is Shinichi-kun! ...And Mouri-san!”
“Ehhh!!?! You’re a thing!”
So much for being subtle, Ran flushes inwardly as she returns the wave the other girls are giving her. At that moment she really does feel immature for her past conduct. All of them are sweet. Even Kaori.
“I knew it Shinichi-kun! Mouri-san is sooo lucky, I’m so jealous!” Ran hears their banter and sees her jab his bicep before acknowledging her. “We’ll take care of him, Mouri-san!”
The Ran from one week ago would’ve had her heart crushed by such declaration, but now she’s nothing but pleased and the smile that forms across her lips is nothing but honest. “Make sure he doesn’t drag your group into a random dead body, Kaori-san!”
“Hey!” surfaces Shinichi’s shout amidst the mincing laughter of the group and the onlooking passers-by, and Ran bids her last wave before they enter the station.
Smiling to herself, Ran returns home, the lingering promise of his kiss committed to memory, knowing that she doesn’t have to get jealous because she has no reason to. Their indefeasible bond is all the assurance she needs.

For the entirety of his 20 years of existence, Kudo Shinichi finds himself in one of the most difficult situations.
Everything was going so smoothly. He already had enough clues to figure out who the suspect was. All he needed was evidence to prove his surmises. It was all according to his plans.
Not until the suspect kidnapped Ran.
He should have seen that coming. After all, when the Conan incident ended with his name plastered all over Japanese Television for defeating one of the most notorious criminal organizations in the world, stuff like this happened afterwards.
If they can't target him to shut him up, they'll target the ones he care for. It happened more than once already, but everyone Shinichi knows can defend themselves(he's actually the easiest one to attack).
Hattori Heiji is a fellow detective who can swing a sword really well, Tooyama Kazuha knows Aikido, Masumi Sera is a Jeet Kune Do specialist, his parents are out of the question—or out of the country—, professor Agasa has his inventions, Ai with her scary scientific knowledge, the detective boys' unbeatable luck, Suzuki Sonoko with her boyfriend being the world's strongest security, the FBI and first division are a no go, and even the british detective Hakuba Saguru and phantom thief Kaito Kid can easily fend attackers off.
But the one who's always been the primary victim would be his girlfriend, Mouri Ran. Most of time, he doesn't worry one bit. After all, he knew more than anyone else just how much impact she can do with her karate—the Conan aftermath was proof of his girlfriend's ridiculous strength— and would even be afraid for the criminal, feeling sorry for their battered bodies afterwards. But today was a different matter. Ran was sick and couldn't possibly defend herself in her bad condition.
He believed himself to be a forgiving and understanding man. Being Edogawa Conan taught him a lot of things, including little compassion and sympathy towards even to the most horrible of culprits.
But this man was different. Not only did he involved Ran who had no idea of what's going on, he didn't hesitate, even after knowing she was sick and defenseless.
Shinichi was a kind man through and through, but concerning his innocent and ill girlfriend was a different matter.
Now, he stood on the rooftop of the criminal's twenty floor apartment building, anger barely contained. The man was grinning in that deranged way of his, while holding his girlfriend with a small but clearly sharp knife at her neck. What makes matters worse, was that they're at the very edge, one wrong move and both of them could be flat at the ground, bones broken.
Just from that alone, Shinichi was itching to shoot the man with his pistol but restrained himself. What almost pushed him to doing so however was his girlfriend's tired and pained expression, from her fever and the current predicament.
With the wind blowing furiously, it doesn't take a genius to know that Ran was freezing, specially with her condition.
He blocked out his primitive reaction of shooting the man for now, and willed himself to finish the issue faster, for Ran's sake.
"Listen, you can still go back from this! Just drop the knife and walk away from the edge!"
He shouted, taking two steps towards the two of them. The man only grinned even wider, as if finding something funny about his words.
"Why would I go back there? To just go in jail!? I'd rather die!"
'If you wanna die, then die. Don't take my girl with you!', were the words he wanted to say but decided against it.
Instead, he treaded nearer, trying to look as innocent as possible to not alarm his target.
"You knew what you did was wrong! You'll just have to repent it in prison for a few years! You can't go back from dying!"
The man wasn't having it. He gripped tighter against Ran's neck with his knife getting dangerously close. Shinichi's initial thought was to sprint, but managed to catch himself on time.
"That bitch deserved it you know! She cheated on me when I gave her my everything! I only did what was right for her! What she deserved!"
The man was going crazier by the second. Not that Shinichi could blame him. For all he knew, the suspect was a respectable man who loved his wife very much but it turned out she was cheating on him with another man.
Shinichi couldn't even imagine that happening to him. Even back then as Conan, Ran's faithfulness was so strong that something like cheating or attraction to other men didn't even cross his mind(except with Araide's case, Okita's case and many others).
Still, murder is murder. The husband could have dealt with it in a more rational way but he didn't, causing him to spiral downwards to madness.
Well, Shinichi will most likely go towards the same path as well if he would be unable to save Ran.
"You shouldn't have killed her! She was wrong! Cheating on your partner is stupid and unforgivable! But what you're doing right now is the same! You're only commiting murder! So please, turn yourself in. You can still change."
It seemed to have worked, with the culprit's grin dissipating and his hold on Ran loosening. Shinichi fasten his pace, while the man was still contemplating. But before he can even reach his end goal, the suspect looked at him with vicious but hurt eyes, tears forming.
"You're right. I shouldn't have done something so terrible. But I can't go back now. I can't go to jail."
All the detective could do was to stand there, disheartened by this man's irrationality. He was so close, just a few more steps and it would had been over.
Seeing as the suspect's humanity slipping away, Shinichi tried to take one tentative step at a time.
Before he can even put his right foot in front of him, the man violently shakes Ran, causing Shinichi to froze at his spot.
All his girlfriend could do was slightly whimper, still weak from her fever. The wind wasn't getting any calmer and it was bad for Ran.
"Stop this! Please! Give Ran back to me!"
The desperation was leaking but he didn't care. He was too worried for her to even think of something like pride right now. It wasn't helping that the man was slightly getting unstable from their spot at the edge.
"I'll give your girlfriend back to you in one condition."
The man eyed Shinichi with determined eyes and he didn't like it one bit.
"Call the police right now and tell them that the culprit is my wife's other man."
The detective thought he didn't hear him correctly but the expression on the culprit's face was telling him otherwise.
"Why would I even do that? I'm a detective, my job is to reveal the truth!"
The suspect laughed and the tip of his weapon was now touching his girlfriend's neck. Ran tried to wiggle out from the pain but the man kept her still. Shinichi couldn't do anything but widen his eyes and tried to run at her, only to be stopped by their culprit's daring looks.
"Don't come any closer or I'll slit your girl's throat!"
Seeing his pursuer's conflicted reaction, the suspect's smile was back, even more disturbing than before, lacking of any human compassion he might have had left of him.
"If you know the truth, then you can easily twist it right? You're the great detective Kudo Shinichi! Everyone will believe you!"
"I can't possibly do that!"
Hearing his resolute answer, the culprit slowly averted his eyes towards Ran.
"Not even for you lover?"
He couldn't answer. Because how could he? Choosing between the truth he valued and his most precious person was impossible.
Seconds passed but Shinichi didn't let a word out. He only stared at his girlfriend, with contrast beliefs and emotions swirling in them. The man was getting impatient but before he could speak, a new voice entered.
"Don't do it."
For the first time, Ran spoke. Her voice was hoarse and guttural, but she made sur eit can be heard.
Everything in her body hurts. From her legs that's been almost dangling down the edge, her arms weakly flailing on her side, her stomach wanting to throw up, her entire being physically burning and being cold at the same time. She felt horrible and wanted nothing but to karate chop her kidnapper.
But right now, her focus was on Shinichi, like it has always been whenever they were together. He looked tired, running all the way here from her house where he found out about her disappearance.
He was in deep thought and his eyes were conflicted on what to choose. She knew just how important she was to him, specially after knowing the lengths he had gone through as Conan to protect her. But, she's also aware of his morals and love for the truth.
Ever since they were kids, being a the greatest detective in the world like his idol, Sherlock Holmes had always been Shinichi's biggest dream. It started off as something silly but as they grew older, his dream didn't looked so far away. From all his struggles and successes, Ran was there. She knew all the hard work he put in his job just so he can achieved his childhood wish. She was present in all the steps he took to be this great. To be the Sherlock Holmes of the modern era.
Now, that dream was on the danger of being crushed. If he were to do what the culprit wanted, Shinichi would also lose his chance to achieve his goal. And Ran didn't want that.
"Don't do it."
She said, line more vivid than before.
He didn't know what to say. He wanted to asked her if she was fine, but she clearly wasn't.
"Ran, I-"
"Don't. Please, Shinichi."
He wanted to apologize, because he'll disappoint her with his answer. Yet, he wasn't able to, with Ran not letting him.
She wanted him to choose his morals, but he would lose her. He don't want to—can't—lose her.
However, her next words were what really made his decisions clear.
"Don't lose your dream for me. Please."
Ran wanted to cry but held it in. She needed all her energy for her last move and crying won't save her or anyone.
The man was getting more and more impatient. He waved the knife around blindly, making Shinichi stepped back a little.
Ran wished from the bottom of her heart a distraction could come for her plan to work. But since she didn't have any time, she'll just make one herself.
"You're trying to kill someone innocent. You're not right about anything at all. You're just a killer."
The culprit's attention went to her almost in an instant, fury present in his eyes.
"Silence, woman! Girls like you are all the same with your pretty faces thinking you can get any man! Not being contented with one man who would give his all! Vile! That's what women are! They're vile!"
She wanted to protest, because she's not the same. She'll never be the same. Just the thought of cheating on her lover already makes her want to puke. She would never cheat. After all, Shinichi was enough.
But she had to pretend he wasn't.
"That's right! We're cheaters! Vile people! We never cared about you men at all!"
'What is she doing?'
Shinichi was extremely confused. Ran was obviously lying, trying to provoke the man holding her at a knife point.
'Why would she even try to make someone aggressive when they're in the literal--'
As his mind reached it's conclusion, Shinichi didn't waste any time to move. However, it was a little too late.
The man was already losing his balance himself, making him vulnerable. Ran, with her remaining strength, wished to all gods her plan would work.
Albeit her left arm was tired, she steeled it with everything she got, elbowing the man's stomach and making him instinctively let go of her.
He stumbled forward, while she inevitably stumbled on the opposite direction. Down.
She closed her eyes, succumbing herself to the fall. However, a familiar presence force it to open, and she did.
There, falling with her was the love of her life, who was supposed to be at the rooftop arresting the man. Instead, he was reaching out to her, ready to die.
Suddenly feeling all the pain and tiredness, against her mental protest, she blacked out.
-
It was a good thing Hattori was there when he went back at the office temporarily. His best friend noticed his strange actions and decided to follow him.
Knowing that they were in a pretty tight spot and seeing Ran and the culprit at the edge, the Osakan detective dashed to find a trampoline, in case of the worst case scenario. Fortunately, he managed to hugged Ran's unconscious form and guide her through the unexpected trampoline while falling down.
Shinichi truly owed Hattori this time.
As they walked out the police station hand in hand, Ran looked uneasy. She managed to regain conciousness when they were already at the station, making a witness report. He didn't wanna do it in Ran's condition but he knew he caused enough trouble at them already.
He squeezed her hand, letting her look at his direction.
"Is there something wrong? Don't worry we'll get home soon and you can get some rest."
Ran's eyes slightly widened at his words. She then smiled, but it was strained.
Worry taking over him, he put his forehead on hers, feeling her hot one.
Ran instinctively blushed and tried to pushed him away. However, being stubborn had always been Shinichi's strongest points, so he didn't backed down. Instead, he asked.
"What's wrong? Did I do something wrong?"
With such a soft and gentle way of questioning, Ran couldn't help but give in and let her hands go to both sides of his handsome face, feeling his skin under her warm—felt cold to her—fingertips. Then, she breathed heavily before speaking.
"What you did was reckless. You shouldn't have jumped after me."
Shinichi regarded her a confused look.
"What wouldn't I? I didn't know Hattori was there. So I thought you would really--"
"Still, you shouldn't have done that. What if Hattori-kun wasn't there?"
"Then we would both die."
He spoke in such a calm and nonchalant manner making Ran annoyed at him not getting her point. She bunped him lightly, making Shinichi backed a little bit away.
"Ouch! What did you that for?"
"Because you were being dumb! You could have died back there Shinichi!"
He returned his forehead against her, leaning again. He closed his eyes this time, looking peaceful, like they weren't in the brink of death just a while ago.
"I could have. But so were you."
His voice was laced with pain, specially at the last part. Tears gathered around her violet irises but she willed for them not fall.
"You have a dream Shinichi. You had it since you were little."
He nodded at her words, still looking unbothered even with the confirmation. Frustrated, she continued on.
"You would have killed yourself back there. Why didn't you listen to me? I told you didn't I? Don't give up your dream for me."
He smiled, catching her off guard. It was so sincere and bright that Ran wanted to step away. When she was about to do so however, he encircled his arms around her waist, pulling her closer as much as possible.
She opened her mouth, ready to reason out but was beaten by his answer.
"You told me to not give up my dream for you but,"
His next words left her breathless, tears finally cascading down her soft cheek.
"You are my dream, Ran."

I wrote this instead of sleeping, forgive me for its lameness.

I love all your Heizuha contents!!!! Oneshots, drabbles, etc (memes too lol). And your ANGST FICS???? I'M DESTROYED. Just curious, if you are accepting requests, can you write happy shinran and heizuha oneshot? I need something to heal from your angsty AUs 😢😢😢😢💦💦
Hi hello thank you so much 🥺 AH YES HEIZUHA I’m HEART-EYES FOREVER 😍!! My hot-blooded Kendo boi and his Aikido (and Karuta) queen ugh they make me feel so soft. Wait—don’t be destroyed pls omg I have a shinran oneshot first for you right here! And yes it actually is a happy one. Although I gotta say I’m probably even worse at doing happy sappy fluff. But still, I hope you like this! ❤️❤️
Fandom: Detective Conan/DCMK Pairing: Shinichi/Ran Rating: G Genre/Tags: Romance, Fluff Summary: Ran hates being apart from Shinichi. All she wants is to feel his warmth next to her.
Ran is happy to be with Shinichi, even if it means not being physically together and having to survive long distance.
Now she would be lying if she says it doesn’t bother her in the slightest. After they got together and she finds out that Shinichi still has to leave for his ongoing case, her initial thought is that it wouldn’t bother her. She’s grown so used to it by now. It’s not like he’s never coming back, because he always does. After all, they just started dating, and maybe this way they’ll still be in their honeymoon stage for years to come.
They have been doing alright with frequent calls and texts sent to each other. Although she is slightly upset that they can’t physically go out on any dates, hearing Shinichi’s voice always makes everything worth it. She knows she’s going to forget all this as soon as she sees him again.
She does expect Shinichi to be as sad and lonely as she is, but she never asks about it. She doesn’t want him to think that she’s already turning clingy after only a few months into their relationship. And because she is an understanding girlfriend, she never tells him how she feels about it. She has been saying “I love you” more often though, now that she’s more comfortable saying it, which he always happily returned. She never once doubts Shinichi either—he gives her zero reasons to. Besides, they have short meet ups every now and then, and those feel like they are enough for her.
There are certain things that leaves her feeling an extra amount of longing. When she sees couples out and about in the streets, or strolling around the park, or fooling around in the hallway of their school, it breaks her heart a little. She wants Shinichi by her side, to be able to cuddle into his warmth. She wants to walk next to him and hold his hand, to go to the movies and check out cute restaurants.
“I miss you,” Ran mumbles into her mic, only one side of her earphones on. She is lying on her bed, on a call with her boyfriend who is still away, on yet another case. She has to cherish all their calls together because time is all she can afford.
She traces her finger on her phone’s screen, outlining his name that’s currently displayed, yearning to touch him. She can't help but feel disappointed when all she can feel is how hot her phone is. She should probably get a new phone soon.
“I miss you too. More than words can describe,” Shinichi replies guiltily, sad that Ran is so troubled. He has been trying to ease her pain by sneaking away to call her more often these days. He sees the longing in her eyes, always wondering what he can do for her. He hates it, hates seeing Ran’s face contort into sadness and what seems like disappointment. It never gets any easier.
If only she knows that they are actually together literally every single day.
“Anyway, how is your day?” Shinichi asked, trying to change the subject to distract her.
Ran huffs. “Conan-kun left on a weekend camping trip with his class. I’m worried about his safety. They’re elementary students, they’re not supposed to go camping in the mountains yet!”
Shinichi smiles fondly. Yep, he’s definitely on his camping trip all right.
“Also, it is kind of lonely here when he’s not around.” Lonelier, she adds to herself.
“You have nothing to worry about, I’m sure he’ll be okay,” Shinichi reassures, grinning.
“I suppose it’s true. Conan-kun does know how to take care of himself. What are you doing, anyway? Do you have to go soon? Can we switch to video call?” The hope in her voice is unmistakable. He purposely ignores Ran’s questions while wrecking his brain for a believable excuse to not switch to video call. But it is too late, she has already pressed the button that requested for him to accept the call.
Uh oh.
Shinichi curses silently. As soon as their cameras are on, he raises his phone up close to his face, careful to leave the streetlights out of view. “Hi!,” he says, hoping she wouldn’t detect the nervousness in his voice. Ran squints at the blurry screen. She can’t see much, but it is enough to make her whole evening better.
“You know what, Shinichi? It’s okay, you’re probably busy and tired, I understand! Have a good night or morning, wherever you are, okay?” Ran yawns, turning to lie on the other side as she reaches out to switch off her table lamp. “I’m already getting ready for bed anyway. Please stay safe out there. I love you.”
“NO!” Shinichi yells, before realizing how loud and unnecessary it is. He stops to look around, praying that no one around him is affected by the noise he is making. Ran is decently surprised. “Shinichi, what’s wrong?”
“I, uh, I’m staking out a criminal’s possible hideout. It’s really boring here because nothing is happening so far and it’s probably deserted. Keep me me while I wait?” Shinichi asks sheepishly, belatedly realizing how dumb of an excuse he just gave. Is it even believable in the slightest? “I’m just walking around the place now,” He adds as he quickened his pace.
Ran yawns but he can see her nodding her head in the dark. “Don’t you have to be aware of your surroundings, though? What if the bad guys creep up on you?”
“You’re right,” he says half-heartedly, not really paying attention to what she’s saying anymore. He’s trying to climb up the stairs as fast as his feet can take him. He is so close.
Ran mumbles something sleepily in return. How she wishes for body heat, but she only had her blanket to make up for the warmth. She closes her eyes, unaware that the line has gone silent. After a few more beats of silence, she hears the front door being unlocked. She sits up, suddenly alert and forgetting about her call with Shinichi. It is definitely not her father, since she can hear his snores very audibly from his room. Is it Conan, coming back from his camping trip a few days early? But—it’s literally the middle of the night, so if it actually is Conan, he has some explaining to do. She tip-toes to the door just to get ready in case it is an actual robber.
As the door unlocks and the intruder enters, Ran’s eyes widen and her hand flails around for the switch to turn one of the lights one as she recognizes the familiar silhouette. It can't be.
“Surprise.” Shinichi is standing there, smiling widely at the sight of his dumbfounded girlfriend.
Ran stares at the boy in front of her for a good while before reaching out for him in a frenzy. “You’re kidding,” she chokes out, wrapping her arms tightly around him, afraid he will be gone again as soon as she let go.
“I’ve missed you too,” Shinichi sighs, hugging Ran back just as tight. They stand like that, hugging at the door silently, choosing to ignore the fact that her father can very well walk out of his room at any given moment. Shinichi pulls away, frowning, when he realizes that she is crying.
“Hey, don’t cry.” He whispers softly, bending his knees to look at Ran who has her head down. She shakes her head, opting to bury her face in his chest instead. Shinichi run his hands up and down her back, gently kissing the top of her head. “Don’t cry, I’m here.”
Ran looks up, a few droplets of tears streaming down her face. “That’s exactly why I’m crying! You’re back now, for.. God knows how long, and then you’re gonna have to leave me again. Probably in a few hours, or in the morning if we’re lucky,” she cries, sniffling. “I’ve missed you so much.”
Shinichi remains quiet as Ran cries her heart out in silence. Then, he very gently lifts her up, carrying her to the bedroom and setting her down on the bed. “Actually, I have a few days to spend with you.”
“Wh-what do you mean?”
“I mean, you’re right. And I’m not gonna lie to you, I will have to leave again, but not until Monday. So.. I’m yours for the whole weekend.” Shinichi says, hoping for her acceptance, despite how little he is offering her right now.
“The whole weekend?” Her smile is back on her face at this point. Sounds like she will just have to make the most out of this weekend, then. It’s a good thing she doesn’t have anything yet planned. She wipes the tears off of her face. She can’t waste their time together by crying like this. “Oh Shinichi, there are so many places that I wanted to go with you to!”
“We can go anywhere you want,” says Shinichi. That already sounds perfect to him. Truth be told, any moments spent with Ran were perfect. The Where and What weren’t all that important. Like right now. Even in the dim light, he can see how bright she’s smiling. God, all he wanted to do is stare at her and admire her beauty, amongst everything else.
He hates lying to Ran, although it is done to protect her, to shield her. He will have to lie to her some more, but this time, he does not want to make any more promises he can't keep. “It will all be over soon, I promise. I’ll come home for good.” You’re my home, he wants to say.
She has missed him so much—she missed his voice, his scent, his warmth, his presence. She crawls towards him, unable to hide the overwhelming sense of hope that arises after his declaration. “Really?”
“Really.” Ran can feel the tears welling up again. This time, out of happiness. “It hurts so much to not be able to be by your side.”
“I’m here,” murmurs Shinichi quietly as he reaches out to wipe some of her fallen tears away with the pad of his thumb. “... and I’m always watching.” he adds quietly, wrapping an arm around her as he hugs her to sleep.
Ran nods in silence. She has so many things to tell him, but she is content with just enjoying his warmth and presence beside her for now. Truly, nothing can compare to the homey feeling and the familiarity of being next to Shinichi. She lets him hold her to sleep, his voice a lullaby that carries her out of consciousness.
“I’m always with you,” he whispers, leaning down to kiss her forehead, “There’s nowhere I’d rather be.”

Hi! I am currently trying to convince my friends why Shiho and Shinichi should end up together and I find it hard because I feel like it's just natural for two people who understand each other so well to end up together but my friends don't see what I mean. This makes me curious about others' perspective too, what is your reason for shipping them? Thanks!
I’m very sorry it took so long to answer this! Hm, let’s see…why I ship these two…
The short version is, much like you, I guess, I enjoy their interactions, and the way the anime (I’ve never read the manga entirely, just bits and pieces) shows the progression of their relationship and the nature of that relationship e.g. their complicity when solving cases, their instant synchronicity.
End of short version...
Okay, hopefully this will be the only time I have to make the tedious ShinRan vs. ShinShi/CoAi argument, I mean most people find trashing on one ship the main justification for shipping the other, well that’s not going to be me because for a good chunk of two decades I’d shipped ShinRan, and probably I still sort of do, It’s just not what I “prefer” right now.
For a good part of the first half of the series, the anime did a good job at getting me invested on that couple all on its own but as of late, even after Ep928, it feels like the main reason why those two are now an official couple is because of the ‘childhood friends-to-lovers’ trope and nothing more. I’m only speaking for myself here, but my perspective on the characters’ relationships have been changing with the years and it’s just that the inevitability of ShinRan happening despite anything and everything kind of makes it boring and takes some of my investment from it, whereas Shinichi and Shiho – the only other female character I see him getting an interest on, non-canonically speaking – have the potential to be a more interesting/challenging pair due to the unpredictable shift in their relationship’s nature, because ShinShi happening is something no one would see coming…yet upon Haibara’s introduction, the anime gives (or at least used to, anyway) little moments that could give room to "possibility".
Tumblr media
That aside, there is a shallow reason I would like Haibara to end up with Shinichi and that’s the fact of her character being voiced by Megumi-freaking-Hayashibara! I have a tendency to like certain characters because of their voices and I’m extremely weak for Megumi’s, especially the kind of voice she provides for characters such as Haibara (another example would be Anna from the Shaman King anime, but I digress^^u). So, I’d naturally want for her whatever she may want for herself and once upon a time that used to be to get Shinichi’s attention, so to speak. I could say she wanted to get together with him but she never pondered on that specifically. It always struck me as her just wanting her feelings to be acknowledged regardless of being returned or not.
That’s my view mainly from the Haibara-angle, as for Shinichi? I really think the guy needs someone like her, that can understand him in every level. Throughout the series Haibara’s done fairly good work trying to keep him grounded, always resorting to reason when making him see the recklessness of his actions. Yet, she goes against her better judgment to aid him on situations that are beneficial only to him, despite it could have dangerous consequences for everyone else involved if he messes up.
Tumblr media
It goes to show that although she’s apprehensive to him going briefly back to his real body, she doesn’t dismiss that which is most important to him.
On the other hand Conan has a similar effect on her when pushing her to certain actions that would result in her overcoming a certain fear.
Tumblr media
Also, ever since the Bus Hijacking Case, Conan’s righteousness (which she  admires, btw) has gradually been rubbing off on her and become the main  force for her wanting to take control of her fate and stop running from her demons. And it is through him – and subsequently the Detective Boys – that she gets a  second chance at a normal childhood, which turns her life for the better.
On another note, their banter is always fun to watch and whenever they tease one another it brings out their mutual understanding of each other. I think what I’m trying to say, what attracts me the most about them is the level of rapport they share and how it comes effortlessly, their gazes meeting (sometimes that’s not even the case, and still they know what the other’s thinking!), or their   matching smiles.
Tumblr media
There are also specific actions they take for the other’s sake that simply pull me in. In Shinichi’s case, I just mentioned the Bus Hijacking episode: we know the crazy lengths he’s willing to go to protect those he cares about, but none of those occasions had such an impact on me as Conan grabbing Haibara and jumping through the glass seconds before the bomb goes off...
Tumblr media
...moreover, he rubs his own blood on to her just so she can get away as fast as possible from whom,  at the time, they didn’t know was Vermouth and ensure she was safe. I  mean, covering someone with your blood just to ensure their safety? That is HARDCORE!
The defining moment on Haibara’s part for me, would be close to the end of the 2.5 hours Special “Head-to-Head Match with the Black Organization”: Haibara’s real confrontation with Vermouth…in one of the most intricate cases yet, Vermouth is finally revealed as been posing as Dr. Araide. I still remember the first time I saw that episode and I spent the next hour taking it all in. Lots of faces were unmasked on that one, literally and metaphorically, but if there’s a moment that stops my breathing whenever I see it is Haibara getting out of the cab, freezing in terror at the sight Vermouth. She’s visibly shaking but steels herself when she sees Conan and she just runs towards him.
Tumblr media
You could say she’s taking a reckless risk (something not unheard of for Conan), but I see it as her finally facing her greatest fear (not counting Gin here) and taking charge in doing so – not in small part due to his influence either, mind you.
Sure, her showing up foils Shinichi's efforts to capture Vermouth in the end but that wouldn’t have been the case had they previously discussed the situation. It’s her fault as much as ‘their’ fault. I’m being realistic, they may understand each other all the time, but they don’t trust each other all the time. Their relationship is not perfect and I get that, I think it gives room to growth, something for them to work on, which they would manage together if given the chance.
Still, although they may keep things from each other, I have no doubt that when push comes to shove there’s no one they would rely on more.
Tumblr media
Most examples like these are from the movies, which may not be canon to some, but neither is CoAi/ShinShi so, my point still stands XD
My attachment to this ship is the same as an on-and-off relationship, I like them one year, I might not the next, but to me they make sense, and I just enjoy them together.
Come to think of it, as impossible as them becoming a couple is, there’s always a “something” that pulls me back in and that’s amusing to me. Considering how dull things can get sometimes in life, I simply don’t take it for granted :)
Whoah, that took a while to put together lol A while back, you thanked me for taking your question seriously, well, since you took the interest and time to even ask in the first place, I couldn’t have responded in any other way^^

A Different Kind of Fic Rec
So ... you know how there’s good fic, and then there’s next tier fic? Like the kind that blow you out of this world? Ones that change you as a person?
Those are rare gems across different fandoms. They’re just a handful really, but they’re so dense you come out a different person once you finish reading them.
Without further ado ... my favourite next tier fics. Across different fandoms.
Kill Your Heroes || Naruto || 272,492 words || Ongoing It's time to stop waiting for other people to save you. A story about fear, resilience, and Sakura.
** If you love Sakura centric fics, drop everything you’re doing and read this
backslide || Naruto || 128,352 words || Complete Naruto’s friends are gone, his lover is dying, Konoha is destroyed, and Madara’s second return has pushed the entire world to the brink. Hunted and harried, Naruto is sent back in time to upend Madara’s plan before it even starts, and sets about changing everything. Butterfly effect nothing: the world is at stake, and Naruto is hardly about to let it fall to ruin once more. Not while he’s still breathing.
ANBU Legacy || Naruto || Ongoing ** Absolute Favourite of All Time Vol. 1 - Complete - 196,000 words Vol. 2 - Complete - 210,000 words Vol. 3 - Complete - 217,000 words Vol. 4 - Complete - 250,000 words Vol. 5 - Ongoing
ANBU Legacy is a collaborative serial novel based on the world of Naruto by Masashi Kishimoto. It follows an alternate timeline, taking place in a Konoha where the Yondaime defeated the Kyuubi — and lived. Set approximately four years after that event, Legacy is focused on the young men and women of ANBU, who took the vow to defend the Hokage and their village at all costs.
** If you love badass ANBU, team bonding, Kakashi Hatake, Gemna Shiranui, angst, All the Good Gay Shit, you NEED to read this.
A Twist In Time || Naruto || 247,537 words || Complete With Konoha on the verge of destruction, Sakura is sent on a last-resort mission to save her world by travelling to the past. Join her in coping with her old body's shortcomings, testing the natural laws of time, falling in love all over again, and rediscovering who she is. Time-travel. SasuSaku.
** Coming from someone who actually hates SS, this fic is. Mind. Blowing. It’s Sakura-centric and features AMAZING character growth. I think I’ve reread this one 5+ times waiting for updates.
The Lives Worth Saving || Naruto || 134,188 words || Abandoned Naruto, at 26, has lived through 10 years of war. At the end, with nothing left to call home, he sends himself back to the beginning, to the day of his younger self's graduation, in an attempt to change it all. Time travel AU.
** That this fic is abandoned is an absolute tragedy, but it doesn’t stop me from rereading it endlessly.
House of Crows || Naruto || 400,508 words || Complete KakaSaku. War is coming to Konoha and Sakura is far from home, uncertain of her future. But one thing is for sure, Sakura will protect her unborn child at all costs, whether it be from Konoha's enemies... or from its own father.
** This fic is so powerful it sent me into actual depression for like 2 weeks lmao
Pulling My Weight || Naruto || 375,630 words || Ongoing During the mission to Wave, Sakura realises that she has to become a better ninja for her teammates' sake and be someone they can depend on. She vows to take her training seriously, and receives help from the most unlikely of sources; Genma Shiranui. The two form an unlikely bond and stick together through thick and thin, while Sakura improves and meets other people along the way.
** So, so entertaining, but above all so satisfying. I must’ve reread this one 4 or 5 times while waiting for updates.
Will of Fire || Naruto || 223,234 words || Complete Forced to flee their village and the new regime, the loyal shinobi of Konoha must find a way to preserve their way of life and take back their home. As they fight for their future, Team Seven struggles to overcome the past. KakaSaku
Once More, With Feeling || Naruto || 127,462 words || Complete Art enables us to find ourselves and lose ourselves at the same time.
** I read this one a very long time ago but it resonated so deeply (despite being in first person)
Stripped Bare || Naruto || 295,128 words || Complete When Sakura wanted a change of pace, she hadn't expected THIS! Now she's on a mission with Kakashi, masquerading as a dancer at a club far away from home and she finds herself forced to explore her own powers of sexuality and seduction. KakaSaku LEMON
** so IMPACTFUL. This is not a light read by any measure.
Double Edged || Naruto || 347,047 words || Complete  Seduction is like a double edged sword. You never know when you'll go from being the seducer to being the seduced. KakaSaku
The Window || Naruto || 165,171 words || Complete Kakasaku Sakura always wanted to see Kakashi unmasked. This was a bit much though...
to memory now I can’t recall || MCU || 102,600 words || Complete  While on a mission storming a HYDRA facility, James Buchanan Barnes touches one of the many strange alien devices collected by the Red Skull. He does this, in fact, twice— in the past, and in the future.
Next thing he knows, Bucky Barnes is opening his eyes in the 21st century, which is full of great gadgets and coffee, and at least includes his old pal Steve. (And, inexplicably, a different Stark.) Meanwhile, the Winter Soldier finds himself in the middle of World War Two, helping Captain America hunt down HYDRA (which is at least familiar), pretending to be Bucky Barnes (which is not), and figuring out the very noisy group of soldiers who call themselves the Howling Commandos.
** GOOD SHIT, my dudes. I’ve lose count of how many times I’ve read this once. Definitely more than four times.
The Twice-Told Tale || MCU || 15,789 words || Complete For someone he'd hero-worshipped for so long, Steve Rogers in the flesh is a pretty big disappointment. For one thing, he keeps looking at Tony as though he reminds him of someone else, and even if he never says anything, Tony's pretty sure it's his father. A lifetime of not measuring up to Howard's expectations is more than enough, thank you very much, and he's certainly not going to make an effort to live up to any of Steve's. Steve's pretty clearly failed to live up to his expectations, in any case, and that's not hypocritical at all.
** SUCH an entertaining read. I’ve read this one definitely more than 5+ times.
The Act of Creation Will Be Your Salvation || MCU || 84,678 words || Complete When Tony Stark was seventeen years old, he built his first AI. On that day, he ceased to be his father's creation, and became a creating force in his own right.
That one act likely saved his life, and not always in the most obvious ways.
** This fic will ruin you in the best ways. Worth many, many, many rereads.
The Third Option || MCU || 220,962 words || Complete Homecoming A/U.
Ben and May divorced before Peter’s parents died, so when Ben is murdered Peter goes into foster care. It takes just a tiny taste of superpowers for Peter to decide he doesn’t want to put up with his horrible foster father anymore—the streets are infinitely more appealing. All he wants is to be Spider-Man anyway.
So he leaves.
Simple.
Simple, that is, until Iron Man needs Spider-Man’s help. Peter isn’t about to turn down an opportunity to fight alongside Tony Freaking Stark, but he also isn’t going to let his hero know that his recruit is a fifteen-year-old homeless dropout. So they strike a deal. Peter will help Tony. In return, the mask stays on.
And that’s when things get complicated.
** If you love angst, this is the one for you. Also worth many rereads.
Anew. || MCU || 130,298 words || Complete In death, there was no glory, no redemption, no salvation.
Only darkness and ice—or that was what Tony thought. He closed his eyes in a Siberian bunker and opened them again on his 41st birthday, with War Machine flying into the distance.
a study in scarlette || Case Closed || 214,688 words || Complete There are people who want to live forever, and then there is Shinichi, who just wants to live a little longer than this.
** One of like, my top 10 fics of all time across any fandom.
When Pandora’s Box Is Opened || Case Closed || 299,231 words || Complete After two long years as Conan, the time has finally come for the ancient battle to come to an end, and fate will determine whether the Silver Bullet will survive the shot, unless Shinichi can put his faith in the enemy that was destined to be his ally...
... Yeah I did this because I was bored oops

CoAi/ShinShi Week 2019 - Day 2: Wish/Dream
Disclaimer: I do not own Detective Conan or it's characters.
August 26th - Day 2: Wish / Dream
Senbazuru
Summary: Weeks pass with no change and still, Shinichi continues on with a prayer on his lips for each and every crane.

@coai
*******************************************************
It starts out simple, whimsical even.
He's reading a case file and feeling stuck, his hand unconsciously grabs a balled up document that he's planning to throw out and tears it into neat squares. Fingers twist and press, wrist turning until a clumsy looking paper crane sits on top of the library table.
A blink and Shinichi finds his mind has cleared, deducing the key evidence with a flourish.
Soon, it becomes a habit. Shinichi wonders what his brain finds so relaxing about origami or even that of paper cranes. His head turns to the side to rest on top of his knees that he's pulled up, gives a slow blink at Agasa-hakase's window that he can see from his seat.
Ah.
Haibara.
Now that he thinks about it, Haibara kinda reminds him of a crane; elegant and beautiful.
Vision blurry, he turns away.
Right...he hasn't visit for three days now. Not since the doctors gave him the news.
...That won't do. Hospitals are lonely and he's come to really hate leaving Haibara alone.
Taking his files and torn papers, Shinichi shoves them into his bag and makes his way to the hospital.
Weaving through the familiar corridors of white washed walls, Shinichi slides opened the door to Haibara's private room and shuts it with a soft click. There's some fresh flowers on the bedside table that he knows are from Jodie-sensei and Haibara's favourite throw blanket from Agasa-hakase.
Very few people know that Haibara is in a coma and Shinichi hopes it'll stay that way.
While the war against Them is over, they still don't exactly have the okay for having Haibara out in the opened yet; seeing that Haibara is one of the few agents that defected from Them and still being alive and all that. Well, as far as anyone's concern, Shinichi is sure as hell gonna make sure Haibara stays alive.
He dumps his bag on the floor and drags the overbed table to him and gets to work.
Hours pass as he finds clues and leads. Cleaning up the mess that They left behind is troublesome and a chore but Shinichi would be damned if he would ever let those bastards fall through the cracks. Not after all that they've done.
Not after almost killing Haibara.
Through it all, he folds paper cranes. One after another.
It's illogical and superstitious but for every crane, Shinichi feels his heart beat a little stronger, a litter more hopeful for each tiny bird.
Days pass and his new routine follows him into his daily life. Ran and Sonoko are confused at his habit but he doesn't pay it much mind, finding comfort in the simple task. He does it at school, home and even at the MPD whenever he has to do paperwork after a case. Some offered their help but he always politely and firmly turned them down. This is something he wants to do on his own; with his own two hands. It's nothing elaborate but for all of his clumsiness in showing his gratitude, he can do this much.
A gift.
A small, insignificant gift for the woman who risked her life for him and brought him home as himself instead of the child he masqueraded as.
For every crane, Shinichi inadvertently finds himself leaving a prayer behind. For longevity and happiness and hope. All for the woman lying prone in her hospital bed. Haibara...or is it Miyano now since she took the antidote before confronting Gin? Either way, his partner has lost too much and if he can give something back to her, he would. Though for now, sitting by her bedside, Shinichi folds cranes of different shapes and colours then, weaves them together; hoping that his wish would be granted once completed.
Sometimes, he talks. Other times, he doesn't. Silence has never bothered them; their understanding of one another came surprisingly easy despite their volatile start. Shinichi always makes sure to update Miyano about their kids (the Tantei-dan kinda are at this point now) and reassures the biochemist that Agasa-hakase is well and doing his best to follow her health plan for him.
Weeks pass with no change and still, Shinichi continues on with a prayer on his lips for each and every crane.
Shinichi doesn't pause his life. That would be an insult to Miyano and all of the people that fought in the war against Them. But he doesn't forget. He comes by every evening at sunset and leaves when visiting hours end like clockwork. There's only a handful of people who knows where he goes everyday.
His parents. Agasa-hakase. Furuya and of course, the FBI he's been working with.
He'll never risk Miyano's safety again after the last time in Kyōtō. Considering that mishap had the unfortunate consequences of having Rum's attention on him and in turn, those he's sworn to protect, well, Shinichi is more than willing to stick to the shadows until Miyano can make her own decision about her situation.
Still, Sonoko's snooping is a bit of a pain though, and he knows that Ran is concerned about him despite the distance between them since he came back. They tried to continue dating and make it work but...in the end, he couldn't bring himself to tell Ran about the details of what happened with Them despite the fact that Ran knows about Conan now.
Like he thought, it was the deal breaker between them. It stings but honestly, he's just grateful that Ran still cares and doesn't hate him after lying to her about Conan for so long.
Maybe they can try again once they've sort themselves out. But right now, all Shinichi wants is for all the people he cares about to be whole and hale again.
"Geez," he mutters, folding another crane before letting it join its brethren. "You better appreciate this, Yawny. I think I'm even seeing these things in my sleep. Hell, is it even possible to do origami while sleeping?"
"...since it's a stupid talent, I'd say the chances are quite high simply because it's you."
Shinichi snorts. "Rude."
"Says...the obnoxious Imp."
Silence settles again and—
"Holy shit."
Shinichi almost gives himself whiplash when his head snaps to the bed and sees amused turquoise eyes laughing at him.
"Haibara..." Then he shakes himself before rising from his seat to sit beside the biochemist on the edge of the bed. "Miyano...?"
Haibara gives him a faint smirk. "Miyano's fine. I think we...both know that part in my is over now."
"Safety reasons," he agrees with a nod. "Yeah, I know."
Hai— Miyano still looks too pale for his liking. And parched.
Oh, right. Coma.
Shinichi thinks his brain is still trying to play catch up. He hasn't been sleeping well lately.
Once the scientist has something to drink, Miyano gives him a critical look. "You look terrible. I bet even more than me."
He really must be sleep deprived if he misses this woman's snark.
"Lies," he refutes with a cheeky grin; the first one in ages. "You haven't seen a mirror so there's no way you'd know I'm worse."
"Fool, I don't need to. Not when you look like a breeze could knock you over."
His grin widens. "Again with the lies."
"Now you look deranged." Miyano then looks at the cranes, eyes softening before her smirk turns teasing when she spots the random piles of origami strewn haphazardly in her room. "You better clean that up. Honestly, what are you, seven?"
Rolling his eyes, Shinichi sticks his tongue out.
"Oh, that's mature."
"Shut up," he grumbles, trying and failing to hide the happy grin that's threatening to split his face in two. Shinichi jerks a thumb to his epic crane army. "I made these for you, y'know."
"I can see that." Miyano finds his hand and catches it with her own. Shinichi clutches onto the biochemist like a lifeline. "Did you reached a thousand?"
"I think so." Shinichi looks around at the piles, shrugging with a sort of carefree attitude that makes his shoulders feel lighter. "You're awake aren't you?"
Miyano scoffs, incredulous. "You wasted your wish on me?"
"It's not a waste, barou." The words comes out sharp and firm, before he relaxes and leans forward to hover over Miyano so that he can catch the scientist's eyes. "It'll never be a waste to want you happy and safe. To want you home."
Miyano holds his gaze, the coolness in her eyes melting into something grateful and fond. "...Thank you."
"You're welcome." Shinichi pulls away then, waves a hand to Miyano as he climbs onto the bed. "Now, scoot over."
Miyano gives him a suspicious and incredulous glare. "What? Why?"
"Because I'm happy that you're finally awake so I wanna give you a hug," he states matter-a-factly, rolling his eyes.
The deadpanned stare Miyano sends him is familiar and dearly missed. "And you want me to scoot over because...?"
"Because I miss you and I'm exhausted and I just wanna sleep." Shinichi makes a shooing motion with his hand, impatient. "So, scoot."
Letting out a long suffering sigh, Miyano obliges until there's enough space for a tight fit. Strangely, it makes him wish that he's Conan sized again so that they can rest comfortably. Oh, well.
He slides under the covers and immediately wraps his arms around Miyano in a tight embrace, tucking his face into Miyano's neck to hide the tears in his eyes.
A hand is placed on his head and he hears Miyano letting out an amused huff. "Ugh, incorrigible."
"Well, you're infuriating so we're even."
"...miss you too," Miyano eventually says after a moment of comfortable silence, shifting until she lies on her side to cradle his head. It causes more tears to flow. "Tadaima, Kudou-kun."
Shinichi lets out a sob, nodding and holding onto Miyano closer in bone deep relief. "Okaeri, Miyano."
A thousand prayers; all for a single wish that finally came true.

...this is worthless, I’m rambling and procrastinating. Sorry ‘bout that.
(minor spoilers for Naruto and Detective Conan as well as major spoilers for Magic Kaito and... Avengers Endgame?)
I’m procrastinating, don’t mind me. And during that time of procrastination I have been watching a show I used to watch when I was like 12 or 13, so it’s been a while. And even though that show has some obvious flaws - flaws I will be writing about in a bit - it find myself liking it. So why?
Magic Kaito is a spin-off show of the much bigger Detective Conan anime, which was actually my first anime ever and one of the few memories I have from age 0-4. I actually went onto the wiki and looked up the episode, which was a lot harder than you can imagine: episode 282 which features (for that show anyway) rather graphic imagery of a bloody corpse and like blood in showers and stuff. I don’t know if I just randomly watched the most traumatizing episodes of animes or - which is far more likely - I just remember them darker thant they were but the Naruto episode right afterwards was the one where Gaara tries to murder Lee at the Chunin exams which is also a rather dark episode. (I know, it doesn’t really matter but that was season 3 episode 58 of the original Naruto series). I bet you could find out the exact day and station that I was watching because there’s virtually no way those two episodes would ever follow each other more than once.
I guess that’s not what it’s really about but Detective Conan was probably one of the core animes I watched when I was younger because it was well known and free online. It was also the one that got me into doing QCs for subtitles (funny story, since I had been a QC for a while and seen the really bad mistakes some translators did, I actually applied for the “job” of a translator, that was mere months before I wrote my Cambridge Certificate exam which I, not to brag, passed with C2, and I had been rejected, which probably fed into my fear of rejection but is also  very funny retrospectively.)
I don’t like Detective Conan that much, it’s a fun episodic detective story that has a very, very thin overarching plot and is probably only ever end when the writers don’t have ideas for crimes anymore. And Magic Kaito suffers from its bigger sibling immensely. In case you don’t know, and I wouldn’t blame you if you didn’t, Magic Kaito tells the story of a character that occasionally appears in Detective Conan - a thief who is also a magician (which is quite frankly the best pairing I have ever seen, it’s such a good idea!). Kaito is the son of one of the biggest magicians ever who gets killed in a mysterious accident. One day he finds out that his dad was the thief in the moonlight Kaito Kid and murdered by a mysterious organization - who he now tries to lure out of hiding to protect his father’s legacy and put them in jail.. or something? I mean, there is some revenge fantasy implied, but he’s also like 17 and it’s a children’s anime, so he probably doesn’t want to kill them. Anyway, the way he does it is dressing himself up as Kaito Kid to attract those criminals. And that’s the entire premise of a 24 episodes anime.
Before we get into anything, here some in-universe lore that has been stuck in my mind since 13. My favourite thing about Kid is that his name was also “master thief 1412″, the number being the police file number, but if you write the numbers in a certain way it looks like the word “Kid”, a name given him by Shinichi Kudo’s father (meaning Conan’s father). And both Conan’s and Kaito’s fathers knew each other and were aquantances that respected each other? Like, Conan’s mom went to Kaito’s dad for acting training and stuff which is how his dad figured out that he was Kaito Kid. And when her training ended Conan’s dad gave her a card to give Kaito’s dad with an exclaimationpoint - which was an answer to a card he had previously given him with a question mark. Excuse me if my speech is unclear, I am just nostalgic.
Okay, let’s get started: the series suffers from weak characters and the introduction of too many ideas. That’s it. To get the first thing out of the way: if you make an anime about a spin off character and the main character of the main show keeps showing up that means you don’t trust your spin off to stand on its own feet. I love appearances of in universe characters of other shows, I love the MCU, but imagine if Iron Man kept popping up in Jessica Jones. I mean, he can’t because he’s dead but still. Or Aang keept being part of The Legend of Korra. From 24 episodes, Conan/Shinichi is a major character in 4 of them and is also kinda important in another one. That does not really speak of confidence about your series’ characters which is fair considering it got rebooted. Also, every episode starts with Kaito Kid “opening commentary” the episode before the curtain opens and the actual thing starts - and it also ends with Kid shortly commenting on it and bowing in the end which more often than not features the phrase “I will keep entertaining you if you wish so.”, which is a kinda funny meta commentary of the creator’s being painfully aware of their situation.
I mean, don’t get me wrong, there are really good scenes and funny moments; the one that made me laugh was when Kid hasn’t stolen anything for like three months and since Kaito still goes to high school his friend is kinda disappointed and he thinks: “Who do you think I am? A weekly manga magazine?”, which is already funny but literally a few miliseconds afterwards his friend goes: “Oh, I know why he hasn’t stolen anything for so long! He’s dead!” and he falls off his chair. These jokes wouldn’t be fun on their own but their close proximity to each other makes them work so well. I’m like 70% sure this happened to Gosho Aoyama at some point Over all there is a lot of very good imagery, the magic tricks and heists are fun and often times we have parallel’s, call backs and very well fitting juxtapositions, but over all there’s just a bunch of not-great going on, which I will list now:
1. The Jukebox and the Poker Face: The entire show is also framed by this jukebox Kaito’s dad has left him which has 24 disk and an appendix playing some advice that is tangentially related to the episode. And what more often than not gets repeated is that “he should not forget his poker face”, which, yeah, seems like generally good advice for a magician but... why? It doesn’t serve narrative purpose at all. There is no theme or deeper meaning in the show? The idea of a poker face doesn’t even gets touched on outside of the first episode? Like, otherwise he never breaks his pokerface and there’s like no tension between his real self and the poker face which might as well be a metaphor for Kaito vs. his thief persona. I dunno, am I reading too much into this - why poker face?! Further more, because the jukebox only has 25 audio tracks in total and they play every time Kaito is up to a heist, it kinda feels like he doesn’t do anything in between the episodes? Like, if he listens to that juke box chronologically, which seemed implied, he has only gone to like 25 heists in total which.. is fine for real life statistics but doesn’t really make sense since there is no sense of time in that universe and it just feels like he’s done a lot more?
2. Magic: Yupp, in a universe with a magician reliant on smart tricks and improvisation like a magician on stage there are witches with actual magic. There is actual magic introduced to a world that has previously never had magic before and, believe it or not, magic has no purpose at all. Actually, it does kinda come up in three episodes and they do some really fun stuff the first time with the idea that an illusionist wants to trick and entertain an audience, change their hearts which has different if not more value than actual magic changing the people themselves. Really cool stuff. Would be a shame if the writers wouldn’t know how to go from there and it never comes up again.
3. Super weak as fuck characters outside of Kaito: There are, in total six characters that are not Conan which switch up being the focus of an episode. The witch that practises afor mentioned actual magic is this archetype of a seductress who uses love spells to make boys like her and because her magic doesn’t work on Kaito Kid, she’s like super into him. First, she wants to kill him because she detests his trickery but then she just kinda wants to bang him? And that’s her entire character. Then there is a detective. I didn’t even bother learning his name because he’s the “main challenge” for the first episode he appears and then just kinda stands next to the police officer occasionally to drop observations for exposition or tell Kid something he doesn’t know. I mean, you cannot introduce another high school detective into a universe that whose main character is literally a high school detective. It was as if Jessica Jones kept having Iron Man and another random play boy billionaire with a weird robot suit. There just hast to be a better character than that? Make it a very smart police officer, just anything else. It feels like most of the characters are mostly window dressing and there is just no emotional arc to them whatsoever - they’re treated like most side characters that get shown something by Kaito Kid, have a change of heart and never appear again - with the exception that they are on screen. Constantly. Doing nothing at all.
4.The last two episodes: They’re probably the worst. So, there is this “new magician-thief in town and his name is Kaito Corbeau” and he’s kind of the antithesis of Kaito Kid, dressing in the same suit but in black and probably like a joke on the fact that Kaito Kid is a magician who uses doves which are white and crows are black? I mean, it’s fun but the mirror doesn’t really work that much because the words “Kid” and “Corbeau” don’t mirror each other and Kaito Kid rarely uses doves. But I get the point, A for effort, I guess. Anyway, so. Corbeau who looks suspiciously much like Kaito’s dad and apparently knows something about his death, then challenges Kaito to a duel of thieves also being a magician asks him to solve the mistery of how he will steal some precious gem. By the end of the first episode of the two-parter, Corbeau has stolen the gem and Kaito walks home wondering how he did it. As he comes home the lights of his house are turned on, which is weird since he lives alone because his dad is dead and his mother is always travelling the world. But that unexpected visitor turns out to be his mother and my first reaction was... really? No, they would not be doing such a stupid thing, right? Nah, that’s probably a red herring. No way she’s Corbeau. (Spoiler: she’s Corbeau.) And she asks him “if he really wants to do this? If he doesn’t want to become a magician in Vegas or anything?”, which is a reasonable question from a mother: do you really want to be a thief and hunt some criminals who might as well kill you like your da? But it’s also kind of a stupid one because it is absolutely reasonable that he definitely wants to do that and that there is no grain of doubt in his mind that he does. And that is ultimately the problem of the last two episodes: they’re about testing Kid’s commitment which fails on a bunch of levels. The first one being: there is never a struggle on the side of Kid at all. He never doubts himself, Corbeau isn’t even that big of a challenge, considering he has been regularly challenged by genius high school detectives who seem to be the smartest demographic ever, an actual witch, a serial killer+thief, another differen thief and this shady organization that killed his dad. There is no escalation, no actual struggle against all odds making him question his motivations which - he doesn’t even think for longer than a second about his mother’s questions which is why, when Corbeau tells him around the end that it was all to test his commitment, it could have been substituted for literally anything else.
However, that’s not my real problem with that: Kaito Kid is a necessity, not an identity. There is no need for a commitment towards the figure of Kaito Kid because the moment that criminal organization is caught, there is no need for the mantle of Kaito Kid anymore. This whole idea of commitment of character falls apart because Kid is not a superhero. He’s not taking up a huge and never ending task that is going to take forever - Kaito could very well become a big magician in Vegas afterwards, these things are not mutually exclusive which is why that question kinda backfires and makes his mom look bad because she doubts him for no reason whatsoever? Also, Kaito is literally still in high school and 17, they somehow came up with something less rational than having him dress up as a magician at night and hunting criminals by having him drop out of high school and become a magician in Las fucking Vegas with 17. And I get that it’s the last episode and you wanna end it on a heroic note but that didn’t work at all.
(next morning thoughts: I think I kinda understand the underlying problem of those two episodes now, let me, like the show itself compare it to his bigger brother - Detective Conan. There is no similar episode to test the main character’s strength of mind, but his parents often times wonder and ask him if he really wants to do this considering he nearly died the first time, and that is genuine care and if it wasn’t a better idea to let the police handle it; Conan always answers that he needs to keep doing it. However, these kinds of episodes would actually work with Conan as the main character because for one, his parent’s reasoning is way more sensical and two: he’s inherently human. Yeah, he is super smart and knows a bunch of weird shit that helps him solving crimes, but detectives are humans and they never pretend to be otherwise. I’m not saying magicians aren’t humans, the idea of supernatural things that is beautiful and quite literally casts a spell over us, to be willingly tricked into a world where the impossible is possible is a very human thing. Magicians just aren’t, they’re entertainers and try to exceed our reality, to be exceptional and - to be not human. That’s why the show always has him being cocky and witty, rarely struggling more than a bit with a heist, because he needs to. At this point his poker face has quite literally become his entire character.)
I know, I have been rambling, what I wanted to say is: despite all of this I don’t dislike the show. And in a way it suffers from the same Detective Conan problem of having selfcontained stories but an obligation to connect them to each other, weakening the entire thing. And I don’t know why I like it so much, because I like it more than anything reasonable would justify me to. And this is kinda what I need to find out. I’m very tired now and I have three days to work on my paper and I should go to sleep. If you expected a satisfying conclusion to this whole affair: welcome to Magic Kaito and I’m sorry.

#31 Days of CoAi, start!
Happy ShinAi Day (4/1), everyone!
Today marks the first day of 31 Days of CoAi!
If you don’t have any idea what I’m talking about, 31 Days of CoAi is this project spanning April 1, ShinAi Day, up to May 1, CoAi Day, where I (and, hopefully, you, too!) post every day, celebrating our lovely little submarine ship, CoAi!
Thus, I will be spamming your feeds, posting anything CoAi every day from 4/1 until 5/1: one post talking about a fic I’ve written, and another post with a (short) fic for a given prompt.
Please send me your energy so that I manage to fulfill my promise for these next 31 days, haha!
In addition, since today is a special day (it’s the first day after all!), I’ll share how I started shipping CoAi! ╰(*´︶`*)╯♡
How did I start shipping CoAi?
My one-word, catch-all answer would be: Shiho. (≧▽≦)
You know what, the first time I knew of Haibara Ai, I didn’t like her. Seeing how much I adore her to bits now, isn’t this surprising? Still, I don’t think she was likable then, and I think her introduction wasn’t written to be likable anyway, too. She literally scared Shinichi out of his mind, making him think that one of the people he loved most in his life, Agasa, had been killed. All the while, she had been insinuating that it had been because of Shinichi.
How was I supposed to like her? We were given nothing on Haibara Ai. When she confessed that she was Sherry, that she had created the drug that shrank both Shinichi and her, what did she want? She says, “Since I have no place to go, my only hope left was you. Because I thought you could certainly understand me who was sharing the same fate as you.”
But the title of the chapter where she says this is literally “The Girl Made of Lies”. How are we supposed to believe her, when the first thing she does is lie, and the next thing she does is... lie?
At the end of the university professor’s case, it tells us that there is at least one thing she truly wants, which is what she did: she wanted to ask why Shinichi wasn’t able to save her sister if he was that good... And it is at this moment that Shinichi notes that this is the first time he’d seen her true face.
Perhaps, that point should have humanized her and endeared her to me. But, at that point, I still didn’t like her.
Then the baseball match happened. Then the castle case. Then—and this is where I just knew I’ve already fallen—the hotel case with the Black Organization. With that, they… they... just… happened.
In short, it was a series of chapters and interactions that made me fall for Shiho and into the doomed rabbit hole that was CoAi. In every chapter that had the two of them, it just brought out such a different and refreshing side to each of them that I can’t help but want to see them more, together, to see what else they could bring out of each other.
I could probably make a separate post on how each of their interactions are just so nuanced, and so amusing! But, let’s keep it short for now (just a warning, though, the paragraphs below delve into speculative territory and should be treated as a meta or a headcanon, and NOT as canon):
Let’s start from the beginning. Before Shinichi met Haibara, there were four people who already knew of his situation: Agasa, his parents, and Heiji.
On the other hand, Shiho had no one. We were not introduced to any other person she could have gone to. She just lost her sister, who had been her purpose in life. I say this because she drank APTX once she knew her sister had been killed, expecting it would kill her, too.
But it didn’t.
And so, she went to the Kudo mansion.
What did she want to do? As previously quoted, she had said that Shinichi would understand her as they share the same fate.
But we also know that she’s a liar. And from their succeeding interactions, we would know the extent of her uncanny (since they barely know each other!) ability to read Shinichi and how her thoughts and words run deep. We would know how she keeps her emotions in check, and how easily she can cook up half-truths even mixing in outright lies and present them as facts, if she so determines it necessary, or amusing if it’s about something frivolous like her age.
So I can only conclude, that I don’t know for sure what she wanted by running to Shinichi.
Did she want revenge? —She’s always telling Shinichi not to involve himself with the Organization.
Did she want forgiveness? —Maybe, but if it was something she wanted to do, its priority must not have been high on her list, since she didn’t apologize to him the moment they met, and, she was hot-and-cold in urging him to hate her and drive her away.
Did she want to know why Akemi died?—She did ask why her sister was killed “countless times” before she left the Organization, and she did ask Shinichi why he wasn’t able to help her sister, but... no, the moment she met Gin again there were no questions about her sister at all.
Did she just want to hide? —This is the most logical reason, because Shiho had no one. She might have known of Akemi’s professor’s name and gone there, but it would be very out-of-character for early Shiho to go there, since she is very cautious and would have thought (correctly) that the Organization would clean up that professor asap. And though she could have gone anywhere, create a new life for herself in a town far away from all the cities she had gone to as Sherry, it would be unlikely for her to pull off without alerting the police, who I think she would have known to have connections to the Organization. Besides, going to Shinichi to employ the same methods that he used to cover up that he is someone who had de-aged would certainly up her chances of survival.
Still, for someone who had taken APTX knowing that it’s poison, would Shiho really prioritize hiding and surviving just because she survived once? Would that be really what she wanted?
I personally think she had been seeking her purpose: Now that my sister is gone, why am I still alive?
Without anyone to ask, she can only set her short-term goal of staying alive for now while she still doesn’t know and doesn’t know how to know, and bet her chances on the best plan of survival: the one person who’s still going through life as a de-aged person, who also happens to be the one person who could have helped her sister.
And, I find it so fitting that Shinichi gave an answer to her: he gave her an immediate purpose, to create an antidote. And as we go on with the story, along the way, Shinichi, Agasa and the kids build on top of that answer that he initially gave her. It helps her find the courage to move forward. And, a new purpose: to protect.
A big part of how I think Shiho reached such a change within her is her relation to Shinichi. Shiho, who had always been surrounded by black, is looking at how someone who has been tainted, who had every right to hate, did not.
I think this is what fascinated her about him: his fascination with mysteries, and his dogged pursuit of the truth, at the same time his unique approach upon finding out these truths, is something that Shinichi kept even as Conan.
At the same time, I think this is also what frustrates her about Shinichi. At first, I think, she thought he just didn’t get how the Organization was so frightening… But then, after some time, she knew that Shinichi is so intelligent it’s impossible he didn’t understand. It’s more like, he understood, and that’s why, even more so, he fights. You know how the darker, the bigger the shadow, that just means there’s a brighter source of light that makes it so? This frustrates her because he, that fascinates her, would be snuffed out the closer he gets to the shadows.
My shipping lenses say she gets frustrated because she cares.
Anyway, after all that talk that somehow got carried away into a character analysis of some sort, my answer really comes down to one thing: I started shipping Shiho with Shinichi because Shinichi is a major catalyst and component in getting to know who Shiho is, and in accompanying Shiho through her change. When the two of them are together, Shiho’s character unfurls and it’s wonderful seeing such colorful layers of her character, which is just so rare to see.
So, if you noticed, this reason is ridiculously Shiho-centered.
Well... yes, I am, in fact, a proud Shiho stan. (≧▽≦)
At the end of these 31 days, I’ll talk about my take on the “Shinichi part” of the ship, which is the perfect answer to why I keep on shipping this submarine, sunk into the deep abyss of the ocean as it is.
If you could tell me how and why you started shipping CoAi, that would be great, too!
See you, and I hope you don’t get tired of seeing me every day for the next month, haha! ╰(*´︶`*)╯♡

As fun as it is to throw salt at Gosho I think this could be a good time to talk about some good DC cases. So, which are your top ten cases so far?
Hmmm, this took some thought–presented chronologically because I couldn’t pick preferential order XP
Billion Yen Robbery (013-016): Even disregarding its long-term impact on the plot, this case on its own had a good twist in how Akemi disguised herself and the lies she told to track down her robbery partners. I’m always a fan of people, rather than going for big heavy-duty disguises, just using little details of makeup and presentation to completely change their appearance. Ran’s big heart was evident in this case and how strongly she felt about “Masami”‘s safety after just meeting her twice, and this one also what is still one of my favourite ninja-Ran moments to date. Potential kidnapper/murderer across the street? Maybe we should call the police, or run down the stairs OR I GUESS WE COULD JUMP OUT OF A FIRST FLOOR WINDOW AND CHASE HIM ACROSS THE STREET AND DO A FLYING KICK TO DESTROY HIS CAR WINDOW AND ALSO HIS NOSE
Akemi’s death opens up a shitton of plot, and, despite how it gets slightly overused later on (not quite to “did you know Bruce Wayne’s parents got murdered” levels but definitely a biiiiit overused) it’s still one of the most genuinely tragic deaths, especially since Shinichi admitted his real name to her to try and offer her some comfort as she died. TEARS Q_Q
A Haunted Mansion Murder Case (017-019): The case that introduced the Ayumi, Mitsuhiko and Genta. I always think of this one quite fondly. It had a genuinely creepy atmosphere–the “haunted” mansion looks the right side of cliche-creepy, especially once it turns out there’s actually someone around, and honestly I can forgive the incidents of the kids wandering off alone and vanishing because they’re six, of course they’re gonna do silly shit like wander off alone in a haunted mansion. And the truth of the matter is something that’s vanishingly rare in Detective Conan, something I wish we saw more often: a crime of passion.
There’s no clever trick to the murder: the son, Akio, just loses the rag under a torrent of verbal abuse and smashes his father’s head in with a candlestick. There’s no clever trick to the cover-up, either; his mother messed with the crime scene a bit and reported it as a robbery, and given that the family’s obviously very wealthy, money probably changed hands if any investigating officer did think to suspect anything other than a robbery. All she’s thinking about is protecting her son from the consequences of his crime; all he can think about is his guilt and horror over the murder he committed. The case goes from genuinely creepy to honestly tragic. It’s a proper emotional story, and at no point do any six-year-olds have to witness a human corpse, which I’m always in favour of. And I like Genta, Mitsuhiko and Ayumi and I’m glad they were introduced shut the fuck up
The Hatamoto Family Case (020-025): This was another case with good creepy atmosphere, a solid closed circle situation, classic big fucked-up family situation but at the heart of it, Natsue and Takeshi are a genuinely sweet couple who really don’t deserve all this bullshit and you spend the case really hoping for them to be safe and things to turn out okay for them, the traumatic deaths of several close relatives aside. The murderer is pretty sad, though I feel like Gosho intended him to be more sympathetic than he actually was–he certainly could’ve done with less abuse from his grandfather and been allowed to emotionally invest in his art more, but the cousins thing aside, murdering multiple people over a girl you’ve never even approached marrying somebody else with whom she’s had an actual relationship and is in love with is… not sympathetic. But I’m also glad that the nice chef uncle came out alright too, and that all three of the sympathetic family members reappeared in later cases since they were all very likeable characters.
Moonlight Sonata (062-067): This one sticks in a lot of people’s minds, and I think it’s for the same reason that the haunted mansion case sticks in mine; atmosphere. This is another one with a good, genuinely creepy atmosphere from the immediate sense of “small town with a dark secret” we get as soon as the Mouri Detective Agency arrives on the island. Gosho was very good at building these atmospheres once upon a time, I would’ve liked to see him write a horror manga. The case is deeply tragic from start to finish, from the murders of the Asoh family, to the fact that Seiji/Narumi got the idea for the “curse” from playing a funeral song for a man who’d just had a heart attack after admitting to murdering their family, to the complex nature of Dr Asai’s grief and guilt that they felt the need to avenge their family but simultaneously called for a detective in the hopes that they’d be stopped, to their suicide at the end because they can’t live with what they felt obligated to do. There are Gosho’s usual… issues… with gender, and given the bigotry that became obvious later he probably had no clue at all what he was doing with Dr Asai’s gender, but I feel like they weren’t handled unkindly for an AMAB character living as a woman? I could be wrong and I wanna open this one up to the trans folk in the audience because I’ve never found a trans fan’s commentary on Dr Asai and how they think they were handled, but goddamn I still cry thinking of their suicide at the end and I appreciate that this was a one-off case that had a visible long-term emotional impact on Conan.
Magic Lovers’ Murder Case (192-196): As well as being an interesting murder involving some quite sympathetic characters, this is a really good case for seeing what Kaitou Kid’s like under the mask (or was like; I feel like he’s lost depth since this?) as expressed through Katsuki Doito. He came along to investigate suspicious user activity, but he joined the magic-lovers’ forum because he is a nerd for stage magic and stage magicians and enjoys nerding out about stage magic and stage magicians. He gets to unapologetically fanboy over his late father with other magicians, with is pretty goddamn cute imo. He also gets to show off knowledge and fondness for other magicians, and his knowledge of magic tricks is useful in solving the case, even though, by his own admission, he’s no detective, and it led to tragedy. We don’t really see how Kid felt about being unable to prevent that murder, since he was still being played as pretty mysterious at the time, but it was a good choice for his second appearance in DC imo since it cemented him as Not A Bad Dude. Also, Conan gets to be one of Those Shonen Protagonists by running across a burning bridge, which, y’know, is always cheesy, but also always kinda cool (the artwork was particularly effective imo)
Twilight Mansion (299-302): I genuinely enjoyed the gathering of the knock-off famous detectives and was pleasantly surprised by Hakuba’s appearance (back when I still held out hope that that kind of thing meant that Kid would get more involved in the plot). The mansion itself is actually quite gorgeously designed and rendered, especially at the end when the exterior crumbles, and again, DAT CREEPY ATMOSPHERE. I guess it’s officially plot-important now, too, which I just wanna say, I officially called nine years ago, but also I was hardly the only one calling BO involvement with Karasuma.
Most of all, in general, I just really like watching and reading things involving skilled people being very competent at what they do, so the fact that ALL of the gathered detectives (save that one dead one) figured out what was up and were able to communicate and come up with a plan without revealing themselves to the brilliant detective BEHIND the whole thing, and the execution of that plan, were all very, very good and I liked it. I might reread this one right now, actually, while I’m thinking about it, I really do enjoy it top to bottom.
Golden Apple Case (350-354): PEAK interesting backstory on the part of Vermouth and Yukiko, a reasonably interesting murder, Yukiko’s RAD driving scene, and one of my favourite Ran moments ever. The confrontation with the serial killer/Vermouth is tense as hell, and the fact that Ran reacts instinctively to save his life and just can’t bring herself to drop him and let him die, to be responsible for a death, no matter whose, is a very powerful statement on the integrity of her character. She’s just to her core, and Shinichi does steal the moment a bit by helping her pull the serial killer up and getting the really good “you might need a reason to kill, but you don’t need a reason to save a life” line, but this still feels entirely like a Ran moment for me. We find out later that this incident had a profound effect on Vermouth, too, and is possibly the entire reason she’s hiding Shinichi’s secret from the BO and explicitly the reason she doesn’t want Ran to come to harm. Shame we haven’t had much Vermouth character development in a while because this stuff was JUICY.
Two Cases Under One Moon (429-434): An ICONICALLY good Bo-fightin’ case where everybody involved is putting in Maximum Effort. Heiji puts on an extremely good show as a fake Shinichi (the boy’s an extreme drama queen and Heiji does that very well), Yukiko’s disguise skills are valuable and well-used, we finally get the revelation that Vermouth has been Dr Araide for a while AND that she’s maybe immortal (…not… that we’ve gotten ANYTHING on that since..) AND we get the VERY interesting nature of her feelings concerning Shinichi and Ran. Also, we get Ran so concerned about Ai’s wellbeing that she hides in a car boot and then jumps into gunfire in order to protect her, GOD that’s SUCH a good Ran moment. Shinichi, Jodie and Akai all also get to be very brave and very smart and very badass, and ugh really I just wanna go back to everything about Vermouth in this case and explore more of that forever. Please. Also more Jodie, whose backstory we finally got in this case after revealing that she’s not Vermouth. What is it with interesting women disappearing as soon as their backstory is out MOVING ALONG
Clash of Red and Black (595-609): This case is a cracking case. This one was long and complicated and many-layered and everybody involved was on their highest gears and it was great. Akai and Conan work as a fantastic team and Conan gets free reign to do some very good detective work for the FBI (I still believe he told Akai who he was during this case, it would make sense and undercuts how concerned I am with all of these grown adults letting a six-year-old run all around an active incident). We get a good look at the incredible power and cruelty of the Black Organization when they cause immense collateral damage just to flush the FBI out. We get the story on both Akemi and Akai’s relationship AND the Hondo family, and OH BOY THE HONDO FAMILY.
It’s also one of the most interesting Eisuke cases, imo, where not only does he do some solid investigation to find Mizunashi Rena, we get a glimpse of some real deep trauma over losing his last family member that’s driven him to be willing to attack Rena with scissors out of desperation to get answers about what happened to his father and sister. I mean, I am most definitely not advocating stabbing coma patients, but for Eisuke a lot of the trauma of your whole beloved family dying or disappearing was just implied and not explored, and then he got booted from the series immediately after things got interesting with him, so bleh. We also barely see Hidemi after this, and ?????????? because she’s a CIA agent who’s in DEEP to the BO after surviving a HORRIFYING situation where she has to proudly boast of murdering a man who was secretly her FATHER, who SACRIFICED HIS LIFE TO PROTECT HER… why are we dicking around so much with Mystery Family instead of exploring this one??? This case is kind of the last hurrah for anything interesting happening with the Hondos so I love it for that.
And I love the complicated counter-bluff involved in delivering Kir back to the Black Organization without looking like they were delivering her. Again, this was apparently in exchange for her assisting the FBI and she barely appears after this…? Nope this isn’t about salting at Gosho moving on
The Life-Threatening Broadcast of Love (804-808): I love this one solely and 300% for the part where Miwako Sato jumps out of a helicopter, shoots a noose off of her boyfriend’s neck, grabs him, wraps her coat around him to protect them and knocks both of them out of the range of a bomb blast at the last second, like the goddamn action hero that she is.
So in no particular order, those are my top ten: how about the rest of you?

Today’s 8th January, the day Detective Conan first aired in Japan and I wanna talk about my favourite character: Ran Mouri.
I have a love-hate relationship with the anime staff and the movie staff when it comes to Ran.
I remember watching DC and the movies a few years ago after coming back from a hiatus and I didn’t like Ran. She was kidnapped multiple times, made to play the victim, didn’t add anything to the movies except for calling for Shinichi and made to play the damsel in distress. Even if she did have a good sequence, it was ruined in the later part of the story, which led to me not liking her, even though she used to be one of my favourite characters.
But when I was done watching the anime and the movies, I switched to the manga. I re-read the whole thing and I fell in love with her again. And so I came to realize that the episodes I didn’t like the way Ran acted were mostly Anime Original episodes. They didn’t exist in the manga, which is the canon universe. The same was true with the movies. Her being made to play the ‘typical female lead’ who cries for the male lead, makes dumb decisions etc didn’t exist in the canon universe.
In canon, she’s a badass, sensitive woman who does well with her life even though her childhood friend/love interest has been gone for 6 months with little contact. She takes care of her family. She protects her friends. She breaks down but still gets up. She empathizes. She worries. She hesitates. She lives with a set of strict morals. She doesn’t play the damsel in distress. She doesn’t back away from a challenge or cry for Shinichi at the littlest things. She tries to work it out on her own but when she does reach her limits or she knows that there are certain things that Shinichi would be better at, she’s humble enough to let him take the lead.
I love the canon-Ran. Her character’s stayed consistent throughout this manga and at no point, I’ve felt like that she did something  that was out of character for her. Even when she saw the fortune which said that she needed to change so that Shinichi would come to like her and she tried to, I didn’t feel like it was something to hate her over, which many people did, saying, ‘how weak is she for wanting to change for a man’ but I empathized with her because once in a while people find someone they admire or like and they do try to change themselves so that the other person could like them back. It was such a human, vulnerable emotion and I remember it distinctly.
The recent non-canon Anime Original and movies Ran, is the one on which I’m not sold. Mostly because she’s relegated to playing the victim, when she can take care of herself very well. She’s added to the recent movies just for the sake of being there because she’s a main cast member and her role is reduced to just using her karate or calling for Shinichi/Conan. Movie 21 was a slight reprieve though. While I like how strong she is and love to see her when she’s kicking ass, I don’t like how one-dimensional her role is restricted to. She’s left out of the loop and isn’t allowed to help when she obviously can.
So, anime staff, give my girl a chance to be who she actually is. A badass, sensitive and sweet woman who’s smart and intuitive enough that she solved a case for her friend, remembered that Wada Shinichi was a false name and realized that it wasn’t actually Azusa who was with Amuro at the ASACA concert rehearsal. She’s brave enough to confront the said ‘Azusa’, boldly slide a curtain to shield the man who had the intention to kill the culprit and himself because it was the right thing to do.
Let her be herself.

Top 24 Best Action Anime of All Time to Watch Right Now
Tumblr media
Best Action Anime has always been a signature of anime genre from the very starting. Even if it's not ever the primary focus as it once was, in the 1970s and 1980s, most anime displayed scenes or set plays with intense fight scenes. And I would hope that the top action anime world never went too far away. Let's take a look at a couple of action romance anime that ranks the best of all time. Don't miss Thrillist's best action anime list. 'Top Action anime' is an audit quality, so We compiled 24 best action anime, and each anime series had a few notables. Every  anime encourages dramatic change or stands out due to a brilliant plot or character.  You asked for the best anime action of all times, and we brought a list of romance action anime.
The List of Best Action with Romance Anime
24- Kabaneri of the Iron Fortress
Tumblr media
Directed By: Tetsurō Araki Release Date: April 8, 2016 Duration: 12 Episodes Rating: IMDb (7.3/10) The "Kabane" are horrible creatures like zombies that can only be killed by piercing their iron-protected hearts. After "Ikoma's" city overran, he boarded a fortified iron train alongside some new allies searching for a safer place. The Good action anime here is its key selling point, with the continuous panning of camera angles accentuating dynamic and rapid combat. There's a flashback: "Ikoma," a professional investor, had told "Mumei" that he would transform her back into a human. Do we feel some kind of romance action anime tension between the two? They're a fine pair of fights, for sure. In the present, Ikoma" is convening with human leaders to formulate a war plan, but humans don't trust him, possibly because of his "Kabane" blood. It doesn't work for him that he's not quite himself. He sweats like crazy, and he falls to his knees. During the Industrial Age, the action romance anime occurs as the virus infects humans and transforms them into "Kabane". 23- Black Lagoon
Tumblr media
Directed By: Sunao Katabuchi Release Date: April 8, 2006 Duration: 24 Episodes Rating: IMDb (8.3/10) The squad of the "Black Lagoon" is ragtag of mercenaries in the coin, but their relationships are tied together. When "Rokurou Okajima" (a non-assuming businessman) joins the gang and gives it the name "Rok," he turns away his life, as he flew into a world of crime, corruption, and greed. The Titan assault is terrible, but it's not exactly a horror action anime. You will discover an operation that is heavy on the scheme, creating a character and the environment, if you can stomach the gruesome, inner presence of the titans and the violent intent of how to devote their victims. Since there is possibly more action romance anime than almost any genre, Attack on Titan is indeed the best one since the virtual absence of plot shield means that no one is ever truly safe, and the consequences were genuine. Black Lagoon, the best action anime without our happy trigger Revy, who promises to push the series together, cannot be said about it. 22- Dorohedoro
Tumblr media
Directed By: Yuichiro Hayashi Release Date: 1999 Duration: 12 Episodes Rating: IMDb (8.5/10) We find powerless people and strong magicians alike in the abandoned and unhospitable district of Hole. Kaiman is a tall, brooding figure with the head of a crocodile. But he wasn't born that way. And he's looking for the guy who took his body, his memories, and, ultimately, his identity. When this top action romance anime begins, "En", a leading mafia magician, hears a Lizardman murdering his people and sends out the indifferent Shin and his partner, the bubbly (and too muscular) Noi, into the Hole to take care of Caiman, triggering a messy conflict between the two worlds. Although the initial premise would otherwise suggest that the moral world of Dorohedoro is far from black and white, sorcerers' society appears to be one with its internal conflicts and oppressive machines. 21- Gintama
Tumblr media
Directed By: Shinji Takamatsu Release Date: April 4, 2006 Duration: 367 Episodes Rating:  IMDb (8.6/10) Hundreds of "Gintama" episodes cover many genres. I loved it from the very beginning, but some suggest you must get to the first serious arc to appreciate the value of "Gintama's" setting and characters. "Gintoki" is a samurai who helps people with jobs here and there in Feudal Japan after an alien invasion. Comedy's an anime's hard nut to crack. The funniest series there relies on Japanese phrases that do not translate. "Gintama" is on the thin side, and witches might lose in Western audiences. The Comedy action romance anime is still legally funny, so the award of best comedy anime is taken. Part of this is from jokes that land amid the language barrier. 20- The Tower of God
Tumblr media
Directed By: Takashi Sano Release Date: June 30, 2010 Duration: 13 Episodes Rating:  IMDb (7.9/10) The Tower of God recently completed is the first action romance anime webtoon! I'm pleased that I Choose a good one. The anime enhanced over the webtoon in every possible way, with the distinct and raw art style and an epic weight for every conflict. This electronic orchestral soundtrack. 25th Bam was a boy who knew only a dark cavern, a filthy cloth, and an inaccessible light all his life. Then the whole of his life changed when a young girl named Rachel came into him by morning. He learned from her some things about the outside world by being close friends with Rachel. Begins "Bam's" journey, a young boy who wasn't selected from the Tower but had his doors opened. They call its kind of "Irregulars" being that each time they put a foot in, it has shaken the very base of the Tower. 19- Akira
Tumblr media
Directed By: Katsuhiro Otomo Release Date: July 16, 1988 Duration: 2h 6m Rating:  IMDb (8/10) Akira is a classic all-time Anime. Gang wars, psychokinetic conspiracies, and a government effort are situated around Neo-scenery, Tokyo's, which could ruin the city and kill most of the inhabitants. The tale is dense, so let us concentrate on the action. Akira is not just a action anime, and not just great animation, although both are great. It's a beautiful film; it stops absolutely. There is a lot of top action romance anime list, and every year more come out. Akira remains a high watermark. It is a great film, a cool story, and a beautiful, action-packed animation with tremendous attention to detail. 18- Parasyte
Tumblr media
Directed By: Bong Joon-ho Release Date: May 30, 2019 Duration: 2h 12m Rating:  IMDb (8.5/10) But not his side, now hosting a personality. Oh, his eyes and the mouth. Okay, that's terrible, but you can still change. The horror of the body was never so freely directed into motion. This best action anime will concentrate on Izumi Shinichi, a 17-year-old who lives in Tokyo with his family. One night, an alien Parasyte that looks like a worm enters his body, burrowing on to his arm, which is named Migi. It leads to an unusual connection between the two. 17- Land of the Lustrous
Tumblr media
Directed By: Takahiko Kyogoku Release Date: October 7, 2017 Duration: 12 Episodes Rating:  IMDb (8.4/10) It's beautiful to watch, featuring many pleasant and well-defined people who each need a demon in an eternal war with the Lunar people who are mobilizing their bodies to harvest their beauty. Some of the settings will leave your jaw between your knees, waiting for the next episode to be clicked. Crystalline creatures called Gems in the unknown future occupy a planet devastated by six meteors. Each Ornament is assigned a role to combat the Lunar people, a species that attacks them to break down their bases and utilize them as decorations. It's dynamic, brilliant and has some of the most pleasant films in best action romance anime TV history. 16- One Punch Man
Tumblr media
Directed By: Shingo Natsume Release Date: December 4, 2015 Duration: 12 episodes and 5 special episodes Rating:  IMDb (8.8/10) The author of the original webcomics hit it with his first idea, uh, punched it out of the park. Get this all right? Just imagine a standard shounen or even super heroic comic.  Although the action anime genre is still spoofing, One Punch Man ventures in a different direction and asks the fundamental question: What if a superhero were so powerful that he could punch all of his enemies? The top action anime series begins with a regular guy called Saitama, who chooses a nonsensical training scheme to become a superhero. He overdoes it, becomes so dominant that his opponents are not in trouble, and as a result, he becomes bored (and bald). This, however, is a cool, funny and good action anime series of bonkers with lots of action - Saitama must take things seriously every once and for a while. 15- Sword of the Stranger
Tumblr media
Directed By: Masahiro Andô Release Date: September 29, 2007 Duration: 1h 43m Rating: IMDb (7.8/10) As part of their unprecedented ability and straightforward aim, Sword of the Stranger may very well be the most thoroughly performed entry in the best action anime of all time genre. Young orphan Kotaro and his heroic dog Tobimaru encounter an unnamed swordsman whose adventures need little clarification. It seems to Sword of the Stranger, a great option to start this rundown, precisely because it is the high-octane action with some good action anime choreographed parts that keep you attached to your seat during the film. She would not mislead her narrative characters, incredible sequences of action, stunning art styles, and only the fraternal love between two main characters has a progressing past. If you love the setting of history, that's another justification to give the Stranger's Sword a chance.. 14- Hellsing Ultimate
Tumblr media
Directed By: Geneon Release Date: February 10, 2006 Duration: 10 Episodes Rating: IMDb (8.6/10) Hellsing Ultimate incorporates anything from the Hellsing original and lifts it to the extreme. A little less than an hour, ten episodes tell you a macabre and witty tale of vampirism and survival. Very legendary, fabulous, unique, and one of the most sensitive artworks. A lot of vampire amines will occur. The varied best action anime output was understandable, as it had been subject to various animation studios. The animations from Gory were adequate to make you feel disgusted and distressed. The source was faithful, but the production of timing and plot was too quick and choppy for non-manga readers, making plot twists and character development trivial and impressionable. 13- Evangelion
Tumblr media
Directed By: Geneon Release Date: November 17, 2012 Duration: 26 Episodes Rating: IMDb (8.6/10) Gurren Lagann brings things in a genre known for excess to another stage with a good action anime breeze, a node, and a screamed alarm. A mecha with sunglasses could turn off visitors who aren't in the giant robot-anime genre. However, what seems to be an embarrassing mess works much better than it does. Crochet, line, plunger, the high-energy opening sequence, and the first episode lead you through some well-designed scenes that are strange but brilliant and amusing best action romance anime for the same time. When each character is introduced, we learn more about the brain, nerve, and soul organizations and why they have been developed. 12- Katanagatari
Tumblr media
Directed By: Hideo Katsumata with Others. Release Date: January 25, 2010 Duration: 12 Episodes Rating: IMDb (8.4/10) In his quest for 12 special blades, Katanagatari is the story of strategist and Martial Artist Shichika. It is also the tale of shifting times when the swords' age was forced to end with the rash of firearms in Japan's Edo-era.  The core partnership is just as intense as the realization of its key subjects, which ensures that the bread and butter of this series will keep you in some way amused as you chatter interminably. This isn't to say that this top action romance anime are not entertaining. Still, it is more aimed at fans who might be considering pivoting towards more dialog-heavy anime and, at the same time, retaining a substantial side dish of action. 11- Kill la Kill
Tumblr media
Directed By: Hiroyuki Imaishi Release Date: October 3, 2013 Duration: 27 Episodes Rating: IMDb (7.9/10) Revenge is the game story in "Kill la Kill," starting from a basic plot but becoming more complicated and more in-depth, rather than just an anime full of best action anime and beautiful combat scenes than appears in each chapter. Ryuuko Matoi roamed the country in search of his killer after the assassination of her dad. At the renowned Honnouji Academy, she is at high school, unlike any other, with just her lead-the absent half of his innovation, Scissor Blade. The Academy, along with its influential subsidiary elite four, is ruled by the formidable and cold-hearted student council chairman Satsuki Kiryuin. Satsuki offers those in the highest unique clothing called "Goku's Uniforms," which offer the wearer extraordinary superhuman powers in the school's brutally competitive hierarchy. The hits are still entertaining with their characters and the storyline. This is a roller coaster; you will understand when you watch this anime. 10- Devilman: Crybaby
Tumblr media
Directed By: Masaaki Yuasa Release Date: January 5, 2018 Duration: 10 Episodes Rating: IMDb (8.1/10) This is numbered as the top 10 action anime of the year, and it sounds incredible to modernize a classic anime, and it demonstrates that it can be significant. The 1972 and 1987 originals are little-known but decent classics. I recommend that you watch the sub or read the manga. Although it's all packed, blood, blah blah blah drugs, it's also emotionally full. It's about who the real demons are with a deep and dark psychological subject. Monsters killing people or people killing people. The fight between Fudo and these malformations is incredible. Although it's full of feelings, tears in your eyes sometimes don't like Naruto, One Piece, and Koe no katachi. 9- JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure
Tumblr media
Directed By: Naokatsu Tsuda Yasuhiro Kimura Release Date: January 1, 1987 Duration: 42 Episodes Rating: IMDb (8.7/10) The events of the Joestars, which now take several decades, families, and even timelines, can practically not be summed up. This romance action anime has already seen several bizarre adventures from slaying vampires to defend a small town – and a lot to come! The charming old-school beginning; the following with maybe the most charismatic protagonist; a curious tour with an even better-known Villain, and even a small one clashes with the most inspired path to date. Every season has its attractions. But as the environments, skills, and tones change, two aspects remain the same the unforgettable positions of Hirohiko Araki and the fact that JoJo's battles quickly turn out to be a strategic game. 8- Mob Psycho 100
Tumblr media
Directed By: Yuzuru Tachikawa Release Date: July 12, 2016 Duration: 25 Episodes Rating: IMDb (8.5/10) Read the full article

Haibara Ai had only known Mouri Ran for not more than a few months, but she can safely say she didn't hate her. She never hated Ran. Sure, she was indifferent towards her and tried to stay as far away as possible, but she was like that to almost everyone she met.
Ai has had a rough childhood, taken in by the organization at a young age and being forced to do horrible research while being separated from her sister was proof of that. Unlike the others, she never had time to play and act like a normal child. She was always stuck in the corners of a laboratory, researching and working on drugs and chemicals that can very well end a person's life.
Her surroundings had resulted her into a rigid and cold eighteen year old young woman whose whole life centered around death than magazines and boys. After being shrunken into an eight year old, socializing with the other kids was harder than acting like a child who knows nothing.
Fortunately, her ice like personality was slowly melted away by the ever innocent and energetic—can be a tad bit annoying—detective boys. Where she had been like the cold winter, they were spring that brought new light and hope in her life. They helped her to be a bit more open and social, enough to pass as a kid who's just shy than an introverted woman.
With the help of Ran's amicable advances and Ai's newfound openness,—courtesy of the detective boys— the two slowly but surely started becoming friends.
Ai thought that she found someone who's almost the same age to converse with her about different topics; fashion, clothes, maybe even guys. It made her smile and look forward to getting closer with Ran.
However, those visions were crushed almost in an instant as Ran made her way towards Ai's confused state while being showered with a slew of bullets from Calvados. The young woman slid her down the ground, wrapped her arms around the false elementary student in a protective manner, and whispered at her to endure and wait a little longer. An image of her sister popped up in Ai's head as she held the clothes of her shaking saviour.
Ran's heroic and brave gesture reminded Ai so much of Akemi that she just had to stay away. It wasn't out of hatred; quite the opposite. It was out of love and guilt for her sister.
After that night, she expected nightmares of her childhood and her past with the Organization but it was so much worse. She dreamt of her sister. Usually, it would have been a great dream since her older sister was the most precious thing in her life, but that night was different.
It started with her beloved older sister's kind and cheerful expression that Ai always adored. Her weird yet endearing habits, her meaningful words. Until, they slowly changed to her final moments, her freezing dead body being crushed by Ai's warm one, her soft smile being erased from her beautiful face. The voices behind Ai became louder and louder until it was all she could hear.
'It's all your fault! All your fault! All your fault!'
What's worse is that she couldn't argue. It was really all her fault.
Ai's plaguing thoughts of regret caused her to isolate herself away from the woman who had too much in common with Akemi. Their soft and gleaming eyes, their coaxing voices, their saccharine smiles, their honest words, their courageous acts for the people they love, the very same acts that would caused them their very own death.
Reminding herself that they are in a grave situation, Ai stopped at her tracks and shook her dark brown hair to refocus. Unbeknownst to her, she had stepped—slipped—in the edge, where the cliff with an unseen end lies.
"Ai-chan!"
For a second she saw Ran in a blur, rushing towards her out of balance body. Instinctively closing her green orbs, Haibara Ai succumbed herself to the fall.
-
Haibara Ai thought she had died. After all, that was the most logical thing to happen after a fall. She felt numb all over, all senses didn't seem to work for a while. She expected to feel pain following after, but it didn't. Ai felt like instead of being face flat on the ground, she was hanging mid-air.
Soon enough, her senses started coming back. All she could see was black,—logical since her eyes are close— she smelled damp earth and fresh air, she could hear a strained voice just above her and a felt warm hand snaked around her right arm. Ai fluttered her eyes open and she was immediately met with a view of the muddy ground, a few feet beneath her. She looked up and was astonished to see Ran, whose right hand hold hers while her left was stretched upwards, holding on to a protruding piece of thick branch, preventing them from falling further.
Ai wasn't just feeling it, she really was hanging mid-air.
The strained voice she heared seemed to be from Ran as the seventeen year old woman looked down at her. Her panic-stricken visage quickly turned into a relieved one as Ai stared at her, dumbfounded.
"Ai-chan."
"Wha--Ho--"
"You were standing too near from the edge and slipped. After seeing what happened, I rushed all the way here and well... anyways, just wait okay? I'll pull us out of here."
Ran's voice was calm and comforting, trying not to cause panic in Ai. However, she still heard the slight tremor in the other's voice, making it less effective.
Just like what she promised, Ran tried to pull them up but to no avail. She tried once more but it only made their situation worse. Her hand slipped further from the twig making her and Ai even close to their awaited fall.
Despite her life being in more sooner danger, Ai tried her hardest to remain calm, letting out the woman who's too old for an eight year old body to handle. Ai looked around to see something—anything—to assist Ran and get out of this mess. Unfortunately, her view was limited to the vast rocky edge. She couldn't see any branch to hold onto in case they fall further down and the bottom was not a good sight either.
Despite the ground looking soft and wet, Ai knew the feeling of coming in contact from a long vertical drop was anything but that. She glanced once more at the teenager above her trying their hardest to get them out of the mess she made.
Again. It was her fault again.
Ai kept quiet as Ran offered some kind of comfort through uttered incohorent consoling words. She may not fully hear them but she knew they were filled with kindness and positivity. Even in the face of a horrible situation, Ran was acting mature, Just like an adult, just like an older sister. And that's exactly causing her to feel exasperation. Despite being trapped in a three foot tall body, she was still, in both heart and mind, an adult. A year older even.
But right now, she's nothing but an actual helpless little girl. Because of her clumsiness, they're in this predicament. Because of her carelessness, they might die.
Ran might die.
Suddenly, a dreading image entered her mind. It was Ran, covered in blood from falling, the forest's trees hiding her well. The scene made Ai recall a terrible memory. Another woman covered in her own red fluid, only it was from a gunshot in a dark place filled with trucks. They're different scenarios but have two things in common; both are dead, and both are Ai's fault.
A cold chill ran down her spine despite the sweltering sun. With it came an all too familiar yet novel feeling. It was fear, but not the bone crushing, mind boggling type. It was the kind that would creep to you slowly, eating away bits and pieces until there's nothing left. For a second, being scared at the organization didn't sound so bad.
She had felt this type of fear before. It was when she realized that she could cause Ran's death like she'd done to Akemi.
The idea was absolutely terrifying. Ran was a facsimile of Akemi that just looking at her would bring Ai back in time. Back when her only sibling was still alive and kicking, bringing kindness wherever she goes. Then it would forward itself on her very last day, benevolence gone just like her.
That's why after the Vermouth incident, Ai was more adamant about Kudo keeping his secret from Ran. It was more than just Ran's safety, it was also for the sake of Ai's heart. If Ran were to get involve with B.O and meet the same fate as her sister, Ai knew she'd never be able to forgive herself anymore.
In this situation, it won't be the criminal organization's mistake, but Ai's. She gazes at Ran as the girl kept talking and talking, probably to calm her down even though the woman needs it more than her.
Ran was tired. She did well hiding it by keeping the lines of her mouth curved upward, but behind that reassuring smile was someone who's near their limit. Sweat can be seen rolling down at the side of her face, her body extremely tense, brows furrowed in intense concentration, eyelids drooping but tries their hardest to stay awake. Also, her body isn't exactly in most relaxing position. One arm stretched upwards, holding tightly to the thick branch—her hand was reddening and blisters can be seen from holding too tightly— while the other dropped downwards snaked around Ai's in a firm grasp. Ai could notice some of her Ran's nerve showing from being stretched far too much.
She was burdening her. With Ran's condition and Ai's childlike body, It's almost impossible to get themselves out of this mess. Ai also took note of the branch's condition. She was sure it won't last very long to support the both of them. But if it's just one...
Right now, Ai is nothing but useless. Not only is she being saved once more, she's also endangering the life of one of the few people she swore to protect.
Not only will she prompt death to an innocent life, not only will she diminish the light of Kudo Shinichi's most beloved person, not only will she kill the only angel that smiled upon Vermouth, but it would mean that she failed once more to protect another important someone, another family member, another older sister.
Stealing a glance from the talking Ran once more, with a cold voice, she decided.
"Mouri-san, let go."
Ran's random blabbering to calm down was cut off by that one sentence. She looked at the little girl who's eyes are focused sideways, in an incredulous manner.
"What?"
Ai, still refusing to look at her, just hardened her eyes alongside with her tone.
"I said let me go."
Ran couldn't believe what she just heard. Why would she even request of that?
"Why? If I let you go--"
"I'll fall off."
"So why?"
Hearing her steel intonation, Ai blocked out any emotion and finally met Ran's confused stare. She doesn't need feelings. What she needs is logic, practicality.
"If you let me go, you'll be able to free one of your hand. Then, your chances of pulling yourself out will definitely increase so--"
"But you'll die."
Ran's stare was too intense that it felt like boring holes in Ai. She wanted to look away but that would mean backing out of her plan. The only plan that would work.
"Yes but atleast--"
"No."
Ai expected that. After all, this woman was the person Kudo Shinichi loves. Of course her sense of moral is as high as his. She just wish that Ran won't be too clouded with her emotions that her mind would refuse the most convenient and easiest way to get out of this mess.
"We have no choice Mouri-san. We have to--"
"Yes, we do. Just give me some time and I'll get us out of this mess. So throw that reckless idea away Ai-chan."
Ran knew that Ai was mature for her age. Unlike Ayumi's adventurous and curious personality, Ai was a cautious person that would prefer sleep than to play. She's sure that if Ayumi was in Ai's position, the little girl would cry. Unlike other kids reaction, Ai was calm and rational. But Ran didn't expected the little girl to think that far ahead. Even going as far to thinking of sacrificing her own life for Ran.
Once again, a part of Ran felt melancholy just imagining the things Ai must have gone through to be like this.
"Mouri-san, we don't have time. It's either you let me go and you survive, or we both fall down this cliff."
"I can't do that Ai-chan. You're just a kid! Do you really think I'd sacrifice your life for my sake? No!"
Ai instinctively looked at her own body, remembering she was still trapped inside her eight year old self. Still, she doubt Ran would agree even if she's in her proper form.
'Fine, if acting like an adult won't work, maybe a bratty child will.'
With no warning, she used her free hand to grab Ran's right hand and tried to shake it off from her arm.
"Wait, what are you-- Ai-chan!"
She paid no heed at the teenager's screams and focus on loosening her tight hold. She's careful of course, because she doesn't intend Ran to go along with her.
"Ai-chan, stop!"
"Let me go, Mouri-san! it's my choice!"
"No! What kind of person would that make me!"
"A completely rational kind who understands the situation!"
Ran tried to stop the rampaging eight year old girl but nothing seems to be working. The only time Ai seemed to act like a child seems to be the worst kind of timing. Having no choice, Ran decided to make a risk.
After a few more fiddling and skimming, Ran's hold was really relaxing. But before Ai could do one more skim, she was frozen by the young woman's words.
"If you don't stop and I let you go, I'll go after you."
Haibara completely froze. She stared up at Ran, gaping. This woman--
"You don't mean it."
Ran gave herself a pat on the back, satisfied at making Ai's tantrum stopped. She knew Ai only wanted to save her, but Ran wouldn't like to be save at the expense of someone's life on the line. Specially not a kid.
"Try me."

Striking Balance (II) // Emogust 14.08 — Character A protects Character B
A/N: I couldn’t hold back from writing more of this, so here’s part II. Please bear with me! I sincerely hope you like it. And I’d like to apologize in advance if there are some parts that are confusing and not canon to Avatar: The Last Airbender / The Legend of Aang, it’s probably because I made some stuff up in this fic. DCMK Emogust 2019—Character A protects Character B, @mintchocolateleaves @sup-poki !!
The sun is infinitely brighter outside, warming their clammy skins as they walk away from the inn and into the heart of the town. It’s barely past sunrise, but time moves quickly during this time of the year, especially when they’re scouting the location for a missing person.
River Village is lovely and peaceful. Everyone greets each other even when they are all the way across the street, children are running around carefreely without a hint of worry on their faces. It seems like everyone here is on first-name basis.
This section of the market is probably the most crowded part of the town, Shinichi observes. There are merchants everywhere, selling all kinds of things—there are fruit stalls, jewelry stalls, liquor stalls, and one that catches Shinichi’s eyes is the one with stacks of scrolls displayed on the table. Ran herself can’t hold back from walking toward one of the stalls to get a better look at the robes.
Shinichi doesn’t blame her. They’ve been on the move for a while. They do have extra clothes but Ran is unable to wear most of what she brought from home because the climate is very different in this part of the world.
Kaito has also advised them to ditch their distinctive Water Tribe kimono-like tunics because they attract unnecessary attention, and to start wearing outfits with more of Earth Kingdom’s elemental color in them (It’s green, and Shinichi is not a big fan. “It’s not that I like wearing green either,” Kaito retorts). They do have some coins to spare, so he gives her a nod as a green light for her to purchase something for herself.
Ran makes her choice rather quickly. She has her eyes on a fairly beautiful piece, with a pale green dress as the under layer and a sleeveless outer tunic in a contrasting dark green. The booth owner is quick to give her the price, and it was a ridiculously high number. Ran, being the sweetest soul, is already reaching into her pocket to pay when Kaito pulls her by the arm.
“You’re gonna overpay for that piece of cotton; you don’t look like you’re from this area. He purposely offered you a higher price and squeezed all the profit he can get.” Kaito clicks his tongue in distaste, after watching the way Ran is about to close the deal on what would have been her new tunic.
“Think about it in a positive way, maybe he has a big family to feed.” Ran, although kind of surprised, is unaffected by his remark.
Kaito only shakes his head and mouths, “Watch me.”
He makes his way down a few stalls and stops by another one that also sells tunics and other apparels. He picks a set of bright green and yellow bundle, smooths his hand over it back and front to get a feel of its texture, and proceeds to drop the stack of garment on the counter. He sees Ran and Shinichi in the corner of his eyes, watching him as he starts talking to the man at the booth, both of whom ended up chattering animatedly. Kaito then hands half a roll of coins (Ran turns to Shinichi, gobsmacked, “That cheap?”) to the man as his payment.
If Shinichi isn’t paying close attention, he wouldn’t have caught the tiny, but swift movement of Kaito’s fingers. A gust of wind suddenly blows in the stall owner’s face and he reflexively squeezes his eyes shut. Within that second, Kaito has already had an extra scarf snuck into his other pocket. When the owner has both his eyes opened again, Kaito is already waving him a goodbye, to which he cluelessly waves back.
He skips back to Ran and Shinichi, trying to hold back a smirk on his face, to eagerly show them his achievement.
“Next time, let me handle our shopping necessities,” Kaito now allows the smirk to consume his face, rubbing his victory.
“How’d you only pay such a small amount? What did you even say to him?” Ran asks, genuinely curious as to how the airbender closed the deal.
“You just have to be extremely charming when swaying a deal your way.” Kaito doesn’t try at all to hide the smugness in his voice, tossing the two-piece garment and with the addition of a stolen scarf over to Ran. “Consider this my thanks for healing me.”
Shinichi stays silent, as if he’s deeply contemplating the logistics of Kaito’s way. Kaito suddenly gets nervous.
He is so used to manipulating store owners, coercing them to his benefit, and even goes so far as to steal sometimes. His skillset is what Aoko and him rely on the most, to get through their days. It’s either resorting to his tricks or having no food, nor clothes, nor any place to stay. He wonders where Aoko has been taking shelter for the past few nights. Does she need new clothes after the disaster? Should he get something for her so when he finally finds her, she has something to change into? But if he goes around to steal again with Shinichi and Ran watching him...
Kaito knows the two waterbenders probably think what he does is immoral, but he does it without any regret.
“We could actually save some money.” Shinichi comments.
Kaito lets out a breath he didn’t realize he was holding. His face breaks out into a large smile. Despite Shinichi’s Mr-Right-attitude, Kaito is starting to respect him. In the past week that they’ve been together, he has learned that Shinichi’s cautiousness has actually done them nothing but good. Kaito has never caught him off-guard, not even once.
So when Shinichi stops in his tracks and doesn’t respond to either Ran or himself, Kaito is sort of amused. They’ve reached the east end of the market. There are no more stalls up ahead, only a marble fountain and what seems like a vast area of woodland behind it.
“I’ve been here before!” exclaims Shinichi. “It’s been a few years, and I think a huge part of this town has been reconstructed, along with the market. There used to be a dome over there,” He points at the north end of the market, “Maybe it was demolished. But I know that fountain when I see it. And that was an area I frequented as well.” He explains, jerking his chin to the direction of the woods.
Φ
Young Shinichi loved tagging along with his father. Being one of the Elder Advisors of the Tribal Council meant Yusaku had to do rounds of their whole territory, all the highs and lows of the village. Shinichi made sure he woke up early enough every day to go with his dad on his morning rounds.
His father always had stories to tell him; about why this igloo hut looked different from that one, why the Palace is always glimmering even during cloudy mornings, what the big giant pendants around the necks of some of the older girls are. “They’re betrothal necklaces, Shinichi. It means they’re getting married soon,” explains his father. When he was out to play with Ran later that day, he very enthusiastically told her about the ugly betrothal necklace she eventually had to wear in the future.
It soon became more than just rounds. His father eventually had to sail away twice every month, leaving North Pole for a few days. Shinichi had heard rumors about the possibility of an upcoming war, he should’ve known that his father was one of the few delegates that were tasked to go out there, then come back bearing reports.
He wanted to go with him, and so he did.
It seemed that the trips his father had gone off to, were to the same town every single time. Shinichi didn’t bother to find out the name of the town, but his father told him that they were in a village in some part of the Earth Kingdom. He was beaming with pride, for certainly no one else around his age had ever been out of the realm of North Pole. He couldn’t wait to go back home to tell all his friends about how he had been to Earth Kingdom.
When his father was called in for the meeting in the town dome, Shinichi wandered away from center of the town, past the loud voices echoing from the mine, past the small downtown area and shops, past the sporadic houses that dot the outer edges of the town and into the woods.
He ran around and explored as much as he could, anything to make for a great story later back home. He loved the feeling of his feet padding gently on the soft earth floor beneath him. It’s very different from the cold, rock-hard ice that he was used to. There were so so so many trees here in Earth Kingdom, Shinichi thought in glee.
He came back with his father the following week and then after, and he always made sure that he had enough time to play in the woods. Never had he seen another person in the woods—they were not that deep, but surely confusing, free of trails and pathways that mar their surface (besides the main road going east, but that’s more south than where Shinichi always was), which was why he’s surprised when he chanced upon a monstrous lizard this time.
Shinichi analyzed the creature, a mere few feet away from him. This was a Beaded Basilisk Lizard, if he remembered his father’s words correctly. “Beaded Basilisk Lizards are carnivorous and venomous, and they chew their venom into their prey,” his father told him once.
This lizard stood about four feet taller than him, even if he ran with all his might, it would definitely catch up to him within a few steps. Maybe he could splash some water to the lizard’s eyes and quickly hide from its sight? That will definitely work, he thought, that’s why Dad always makes me carry this water pouch everywhere.
He slowly reached downward to his water pouch, ready to guide the water out... only to find that it’s empty. Dear Holy Spirit of the Ocean and Spirit of the Moon, he grunted inwardly. He totally forgot that he had drunk all his water supply because running around and climbing trees up and down was tiring. Way more tiring than all those waterbending training back home.
A distant sound moving in a pattern toward them caught both his and the lizard’s attention. Shinichi used this chance to hide behind the largest tree within his range. His thoughts raced, but the adrenaline forced to keep him moving. He chanced a peak around the tree.
Something jumped out of the trees and landed next to the creature. With a loud cry, it—he, Shinichi realized—drew on his sword, slashed the creature on its right leg and quickly ducked to avoid the whipping of its tail. The dark-skinned boy looked no more taller than Shinichi himself, and he was winging a sword half his size.
Judging by the amount of blood, Shinichi observed that the sword left a fairly light wound on the creature. The other boy took no notice of this and kept jumping here and there, as if encircling the creature to slash its limbs as often as he could. Then Shinichi realized that the boy wasn’t trying to cut off any of part of the creature. He was trying to inflict as much injury as he could on it, possibly to slow down its movements. Or at least he was, until its scaly and beady tail smacked the boy on his knees. He was inevitably flipped over in the air and landed on his back, his sword strayed out of his reach.
A sharp intake of breath almost choked Shinichi, and without even thinking he stood out from the trees and yelled, “Hey!”
The creature turned his attention away from the dark-skinned boy. Shinichi felt like he just swallowed a boulder at the way it’s now staring at him with a deadly intent.
He didn’t wait to see what it would do, just turned and started running as fast as his feet would take him. He ran past thickets of thorns that scratched his pants, and small trickles of blood ran down, but he hadn’t time to think of it, couldn’t even feel the stinging pain as he pounded the earth beneath him. If only he was an earthbender, he thought, he could throw huge chunks of rock at the lizard. Or better yet, dig a hole to hide in.
Just when he felt it was catching up to him, he heard a gurgle, the kind that builds bile up in the back of someone’s throat, followed by the hard thunk of something hitting the ground. Shinichi tried to stop himself, but skidded across the brush and fell to his hands and knees, panting.
He took a moment to catch his breath and pushed himself back up onto his shaky legs, and walked the few paces to where the creature was flailing around, blood pouring from the back of its neck. Not a minute later, it turned to another direction and scurried away, its humongous beady tail whipping weakly behind it.
He watched the other boy, seemingly not much younger or older than him, who had jet black hair with equally thick eyebrows. He had the tip of his sword plunged lightly on the ground he was standing on as he rested his weight on the hilt. The boy turned around, scanning the forest. After making sure that the creature was really gone, he walked towards Shinichi.
“You’re from one of the Water Tribes?” was the first thing the boy said, his mouth curved up into a smirk.
“What’s yer name? Why are ya here?” He continued to press on unabashedly.
Shinichi replied with a scowl, “I’m Kudo Shinichi, from the Northern Water Tribe, the oldest one. And my father is here for the Delegatory Meeting.” He felt no obligation to give an answer, but he wanted the other boy to know that he is not to be underestimated, that his father is of importance.
“Ah, ya mean that meeting in that giant dome?” asked the boy with his lips stretched in a grin.
“Who are you anyway?” Shinichi asked, brows furrowed. He felt his annoyance slowly melting away at the easygoing behavior the other boy was displaying.
The boy regarded him with something akin to excitement in his eyes (Shinichi was a little confused, how could this boy be this relaxed after having just encountered a monster?), before answering, “Name’s Hattori Heiji.”
“You’re not an earthbender, are you?” Shinichi voiced his suspicion. This boy, Heiji, was wielding his sword the whole time. What earthbender would do that when they were literally on the ground?
Heiji shook his head. “I’m more of a.. Warrior, I guess.” He said with a twinge of confidence. He started walking back to the direction of the town, dragging his sword beside him, and Shinichi jumped into step with him.
“Heh. Did you know that that creature is a—”
“Beaded Basilisk Lizard.” Shinichi finished Heiji’s sentence. He turned to look at Heiji with a smug smile. “Just because I’m from the Northern Realms doesn’t mean I don’t know anything about the variation of creatures here, you know.”
Heiji pondered about it for a second. "I’m not saying that you don’t know anything. But I certainly think that I know more than you do."
Shinichi snickered. “I know waterbending. All you can do is wield a sword.” Seriously, he was suppressing the urge to stick his tongue out.
“Oh yeah?” Heiji’s voice seemed like it was raised by an octave, followed by a howl of laughter. “Then why didn’t I see you do any of your water magic on that Basilisk Lizard earlier?”
“I was thirsty and ended up drinking my water supply,” admitted Shinichi lamely. He crossed his arms and shot Heiji a look, “I didn’t have that much water on me to begin with. Didn’t think I would have to fight today... but I do can waterbend! I’ll show you when we get to the town fountain.”
But once they got back to the town, he heard their signature Northern Tribe foghorn blow—a sign that their ship is about to leave. His father would be mad at him if he was late, and possibly forbid him from coming along for the meeting next week. But Shinichi wanted to come back, so he did the logical thing and started to make his way down to the pier.
“I really am a good waterbender. I’ll show you next week!” Shinichi called out. The last thing he saw was the massive grin on Heiji’s face, mirroring his own. Things were going to be so much fun the next time around.
During his waterbending lessons, he was more determined than ever. He even skipped his daily morning rounds with his father as well as his playtime with Ran, just for extra training. He had to get better in the next few days, preferrable before next week. He was going to show that Hattori boy how powerful his waterbending was.
Over the next few weeks, he quickly found that he enjoyed spending time with Heiji more than any of his friends. Well, except Ran, but she’s different from the rest. Heiji knew a lot more things than any of the kids back home and they could end up talking about so many things that he couldn’t even bring up to his friends. Most of the things Shinichi knew came from his father, but he wasn’t sure how Heiji knew as much as he did. Sometimes they would bring their heated discussions to some of the town people—awakening laughters and bringing ruffles to their heads—when all they wanted was to know who was on the winning side of the argument.
He was kind of disappointed when Heiji told him that he wouldn’t be able to meet him in the woods every week anymore. He didn’t specify where or why he was leaving, but both of them had parted ways with their heads and noses high.
They were really young then. Shinichi had no doubt that he would meet Heiji again.
Φ
Many years have passed, Shinichi muses.
“Say, Shinichi, isn’t this where you said your best friend from the foreign land lives?” Ran’s voice gently pulls him back from his thoughts.
“Ah,” Shinichi nods, scratching the back of his head. Back then, he was always so pumped after their playtimes and whenever he got back home he would always tell his everyone about the cool things he and Heiji did. Shinichi’s mother thought he regarded that boy with such adoration and at one point started referring him “Shinichi’s foreign best friend” although Shinichi himself always denied it outright. “I don’t think he lives here anymore. I don’t even think he ever lived here.”
Kaito’s interest suddenly spikes. He takes a moment to evaluate Shinichi, taking in his face and his seemingly ever bored expression. “You had a best friend?” He chuckles, and Shinichi kind of feels mocked.
“We’re more like... rivals.” Shinichi settles with a shrug, no anger or annoyance in any ounce of his body, the corners of his lips tugged up in a grin, “But I guess you could call us that.”

The Final Problem
More experimental style. Personally, I think it turned out weirder than I’d hoped, but if you guys all enjoy it then maybe it’ll be worth it? I dunno. Okay, so… Trigger warnings are in the tags. If you have any triggers, read them first.
Summary:  And he tells her how he’d fallen out of a tree, broken his wrist on the fall down. The cast… well, that’s the final problem.
[This is the final problem.]
There are so many lies, (so many somanysomanysomany) that it is hard to breathe and Shinichi opens the door to the Mouri agency with an unsteady hand, his mother following behind him. She is wearing a mask, because they have a secret they need to keep, and Shinichi doesn’t bother to help her bring in his luggage.
He’s been on a trip to ’America’ and now it’s time to come home.
“Conan-kun!” Ran says, and it is like he is snow, melting away at the first signs of spring. All Shinichi wants to do is kiss her, but he can’t because he’s trapped as a seven-year-old.
He mumbles a name in response, and tells her that he missed her. He smiles, and grins, and it’s sickening just how fake it is.
Oh, Ran points out the cast on his arm, what did you do?
And he tells her how he’d fallen out of a tree, broken his wrist on the fall down. He wears it like a test paper that doesn’t have a concrete answer. Because the cast… well, that’s the final problem.
[‘They don’t even know you.’ 'And you do?!’]
It becomes a mystery, how exactly did Conan-kun fall? and Shinichi isn’t sure he wants it to become something people ask about. He turns away from the adults that ask, at first, because adults are much less observant, but it’s harder lying to the kids.
Mitsuhiko wants to know what kind of tree he fell out of. Ayumi wants to know how tall it was. Genta wants to know if he’d been climbing for food.
Shinichi replies that it was a red-maple and that it was about 67 feet, and that there was no fruit. And he asks them to shut up about it, he doesn’t want to talk about how he fell, but children are children and they will always ask more questions.
He understands, because he’s a detective, and after all, hasn’t he been teaching these three kids to be detectives? They will be bright one day, they’re already missing their childhood innocence, having seen so many murders - somuchbloodsomuchkillingwhywhywhywhy – but they won’t have imagination.
(He was told once that was the price for being a detective, losing all imagination. Maybe it’s true, maybe that’s why.)
But they ask, and they ask to sign their names and Shinichi, well, he let's them with a degree of irritation, only stopping to let out a cry of protest when Genta pushes too hard on the cast with his pen, pushing into the tender part of his wrist.
It hurts – ofcourseithurtsthatsthepoint – and Shinichi yanks his hand back with fire in his eyes, electricity in his voice as he asks what exactly is wrong with them, can’t they just leave him alone for once? Can’t they stop asking all of these questions?
Shinichi cradles his arm to his chest, and whimpers. He holds back tears like he holds back deductions, and forces himself to keep them in until the three children are being herded away, pushed towards the direction of the Professor’s house by Haibara.
She sends him a glare over his shoulder and receives a deprecating grin in response.
The second she’s gone, he glances down at the squiggle on his cast, and lets out a curse. He can’t… handle this any more. He can’t.
Shinichi takes a deep breath, bottles it up, and heads back home. And isn’t it funny how he correlates the Mouri’s to home now, not his own fucking house?
[’I – could tell everyone – everything.’ 'Yeah, well why don’t you go ahead and do that!’]
Haibara is the second to try to solve the mystery.
She’s protective of the other children, so of course she’d try to solve what they cannot, and Shinichi bites down on his lip as she stands in front of him, eyes filled with ice. She’s cold, warmer than she once was, but still below freezing level.
Ai is frozen, and Shinichi doesn’t mind whether she thaws or not, but he’ll find a way to get her to stop asking questions. It becomes a game, almost – at least on his side – to see who will give in first. Every time she asks of falling out of trees, he asks if the cure is ready yet. The answer is always a 'not yet’, until one day it’s a slight nod.
They trade the information. Or rather, Haibara proposes they do. She tells Shinichi to say goodbye to his life as Conan, and he forces himself to say goodbye to Ran as to avoid any unnecessary pain. He shows up, life resuscitating his eyes, making him a person again as he makes his way to the Professor’s.
He’s… excited.
Shinichi stands in front of Haibara, waits as she receives the pill, asking the professor if he can get a tool to break through the cast on Shinichi’s wrist. The professor gives him a steady look as she goes away, and it’s obvious that he knows the truth, because he doesn’t ask about the tree, he asks about Shinichi himself.
You okay? He asks, and Shinichi responds with I don’t have to be stuck like this any more. I’ll be me again.
Agasa removes the cast, and he stares down at his arm. His expression wavers from it’s usually jovial expression, and Shinichi’s own joy falters, as he pulls away, turning back in Haibara’s direction as she pads back up stairs. Words die off of Agasa’s tongue before he can say anything, and Shinichi is glad.
“You said you’d tell me,” Haibara says, as she passes the pill over.
Shinichi offers a wobbly smile, reaches forward for the water she’s brought with her and gulps it down. He swallows down the pill, settles down on the couch as he feels nausea swim in his stomach and feels himself pale.
“Oh shit,” he says, and leans forwards to face Haibara, “will this rip my stitches?”
In the end, it’s the professor who gives her the full explanation. Which… well, it’s probably a better explanation than Shinichi could give. She doesn’t look him in the eye for a long time.
['You can’t just stop now,’ 'I don’t think I can keep living like this any more’]
The next, surprisingly, is Kogoro.
Shinichi returns, and his mystery grows from trees to disappearances, and maybe Ran is too kind to open her mouth and demand answers so soon, but her father isn’t. Shinichi returns, spends more time with Ran since she’s promised to help him catch up for missed lessons.
And Kogoro – the man who’d gone from hating Conan, to caring about him, has reverted back to hate and distrust. Not that Shinichi blames him. He lingers, the sleeping detective, in the agency whenever Shinichi’s around, and maybe it would have bothered him in the past, but it doesn’t now.
“I need to quickly get something from my room,” Ran states, and the minute she is gone, Shinichi is forced to deal with an onslaught of questions.
And Kogoro, ever the detective, is not subtle with what he asks. He asks about where he’d gone, why, how he’d thought it was a good idea to leave Ran behind without so much as an explanation. It doesn’t take a genius detective to know that he’d worried for his daughter’s well-being while Shinichi had been gone. Not that the teen is going to blame him for it.
“I didn’t mean to hurt her,” Shinichi says, but, isn’t that technically a lie? If he’d had the chance to make her feel better and hadn’t taken them because of some risk, then isn’t he that bad of a person?
Ran returns after a few minutes, although it seems like an hour, and the conversation shifts almost quickly.
“Aren’t you hot?” Kogoro asks, “It’s the middle of summer and you’re wearing a hoodie, what are you, an idiot?”
And Ran says, “I think I have one of your shirts, if you want to change into something cooler.”
He refuses the shirt, and Ran lets out a small sigh of exasperation, but goes to get them all some cool drinks. She doesn’t notice Shinichi pulling at one of his sleeves – but Kogoro does. And regardless of the many crime scenes and murders he’s been unable to solve, he is a detective for a reason.
So his eyes spark, and later, when Shinichi is leaving, he’s pulled back by his shoulders and he looks up at Kogoro with wide eyes. There is something in the other man’s expression that he can’t quite read, worry, regret? And something else.
Fear.
“Don’t hurt Ran again,” Kogoro says, and he is quiet about it, almost pleading. Shinichi nods, almost numbly, and promises, even though he knows it’s a lie. He’ll have to tell her the truth about Conan eventually, and she will hate him.
“I won’t,” he says, and pretends that they’re talking about the same thing.
['This isn’t funny.’ 'Hmph, well, I think it’s hilarious.’]
Hattori is the next to stumble across the mystery.
Perhaps, the most ironic part is that he’s not even aware of the mystery to begin with. Perhaps the laughable bit is that when he comes down to visit, he thinks that he knows everything, that he’s one of the few to actually understand what’s going on.
But still, Hattori stumbles into his life like a whirlwind, offering congratulations for returning to a body he never should have left in the first place. He pulls Shinichi out for lunch, takes him somewhere along with Ran and Kazuha, and they all go out for ice cream.
Another thing, which is ironic, is that Hattori Heiji has never been very good at lying or keeping things quiet.
They are sat eating ice cream, Shinichi attempting to adjust to the… surreal feeling that builds in his chest as he realises that this is real and not just another one of his dreams, and…
“What’s wrong with yer finger?” Hattori asks, and Shinichi flinches away from the question. Asks what Hattori means in the first place, as he takes a bite out of the ice cream. It is cool against the sudden pounding he feels against his head, his pulse picking up as Shinichi realises that he wants to runawayrunaway.
“Nothing’s wrong with my fingers,” Shinichi says, and offers a laugh at how strange a question it is. It comes out mangled, strained and malformed, and it’s noticeable to everyone at the table, that his reaction is odd, and worrying.
“One of yer fingers moves a fraction of a second slower than th’ others,” Hattori says, and he frowns, passing his ice cream to Kazuha to hold as he leans forward and grabs onto Shinichi’s hand.
Shinichi drops his ice cream in his attempt to yank his hand back.
He stands up, attempts to wear a calm bravado – what was it that KID had said when they’d met? The best liars wear poker faces – and declares that he’s going to wash the ice cream off.
Hattori follows after him. Waits until they’re in the bathroom away from the girls, to grab Shinichi’s arm and yank his sleeves back. There is no mystery, because he can see. He can see the facts, and Shinichi watches as the information sends him reeling.
“…Why?”
Shinichi turns away, because that’s all he can do, really, is turn away. Alwayslookingawaynotfacingthetruthwhocaresabouttruthanyway? He bites on his tongue until he tastes metal and winces.
“I… I couldn’t be Conan any more, you get that right? You understand?”
The desperation mingles with everything else, and Shinichi turns to face Hattori, offers him wide eyes and a pleading expression.
“I don’t.” Hattori says, and it’s heartbreaking. “I… How come I never noticed?”
Shinichi pulls his sleeve back down, glances at himself in the mirror. He’s sure that there’s a person there, in his reflection, but all he sees are identities. There’s two versions to every person, the truth and the lies, so Shinichi sees himself and Conan.
And he wonders which is the lie.
“It doesn’t matter Hattori, I’m fine.”
“Of course it matters,” His best friend says, and there’s hopelessness in his voice as each word slowly grows more and more quiet. “You… those cuts are vertical.”
Shinichi shudders out a breath. And glances at Hattori’s face in the mirror, notices the pale sheen to his face as he stares across at his friend. “…So?”
“I… people only cut vertically if…”
He fades off, but Shinichi knows what his detective counterpart means. Iftheywantotkillthemself. He knows what he’s trying to say – probably because it’s true. He doesn’t give a response, because… well, how could he say anything?
The silence is answer enough.
['What about Ran?’
'Ran said she just… she loves me, she wants me.’
'Right.’
'Yeah, yeah, s-she likes me for who I am.’
'Oh yeah, well you keep forgetting to mention that everything you’ve told her since coming back has been one big fucking lie, haven’t you? Oh, you left that part out.’]
Ran waits, when he leaves the bathroom behind, leaves Hattori behind, and she is quiet when he pulls her up and drags her out of the ice cream store, storming off before Hattori can follow after him.
['What if I do tell her the truth?’
'She’ll hate you.’
'No, no, maybe she’d understand, maybe everyone would understand.’
'Everyone would hate you.’]
They get halfway down the street before she tries to pull him to a stop, and she is electrified, fearful as Shinichi turns to look back at her. More fearful than he’d seen her back when he was gone.
Maybe because, even though he’s returned to her, he’s not fully back.
['I just want to be done with this.’
'If you really believe this then why are you standing here talking to yourself?’]
“Shinichi,” Ran whispers, and he bites his tongue as she glances up at him. “What’s wrong?”
“I… We need to talk.”
[This is the final problem.]

Favourite parent-child relationships
Took this meme from @flo-nelja because it seemed interesting, and it’s a nice change after all the “favourite pairings” meme, so here we go!
1) Darth Vader and Luke Skywalker (Star Wars) : This is obviously NOT an ideal parent-child relationship, since one of them is a villain who made questionable life choices, even with his own family, yet I can’t help it. I love this relationship so much, and especially in fanfictions. I love the trope in which the villain cares for the hero, and having the villain as the hero’s parent? Sign me in!! I just love Darth Daddy who’s possessive and protective of his stubborn boy who’s good at giving him grey hair (even if Vader technically have no hair) and at running away from him, and the son who cares too much and is willing to love and forgive his father.
2) Harry Potter, Sirius Black and Remus Lupin (Harry Potter) : They are not related by blood, and we could argue Sirius wasn’t the best parental figure to Harry and that Remus wasn’t always present in Harry’s life, but I don’t care. I really love their bond. Sirius and Remus may not be the best parental figures between the others in Harry’s life, but we can’t not say they didn’t care for Harry and that Harry didn’t care for them either and if we didn’t see much of them in the canon, at least we still have fanfictions!
3) Kevin Cecil and William Twining (Makai Ouji) : Also a relationship in which they aren’t related by blood, but for me Kevin/Uriel is William’s family in all but blood. It’s obvious they care deeply for each other, and that William sees Kevin as more than just his butler and William is more than just Kevin’s Young Master, and beside Kevin pratically raised him ^^
4) Piper Halliwell, Leo Wyatt and Chris Perry (Charmed) : the sisters’s treatment of Chris wasn’t always loving, but that was before they knew who Chris exactly was and we discovered Chris is totally a momma’s boy and I love how the fandom decided Piper’s sweet name for him was Peanut (or at least I think it’s fanon and not canon?). It’s obvious when we watch season 6 Chris had a great relationship with his mother. Less with his father in Chris’s past, but I love what the show did with them, evolving to have a trusting and loving relationship, with Chris coming to trust and care for Leo and then after s6 the show decided to give zero fuck about Chris -___-
5) Emma Swan and Prince Charming (Once upon a time) : I love Snow and Emma’s relationship as well and almost as much but I feel like Emma is more a daddy’s girl, I love how loving and protecting David/Charming is toward Emma, and I love how the show managed to write a touching relationship between them, even though David/Charming missed 28 years of Emma’s life. I always melt when I see Charming’s expression when he looks at his sweet little girl :3
6) Kogoro Mouri, Ran Mouri and Conan Edogawa (Detective Conan) : Let’s forget the fact Conan is not a Mouri and rather Shinichi Kudo who deaged because of a poison and who’s in love with Ran (who loves him back, but they didn’t confess yet and... well, it’s a looong story ^^) and that Shinichi has loving parents (living far, faaar away) and that neither Ran or Kogoro know Conan is Shinichi. For me, they are ohana. Ran pretty much sees Conan as her little brother and Conan sees Kogoro as an annoying uncle/father figure, just like Kogoro sees Conan as the annoying son he never knew he wanted. They care and protect each other, so Conan is a Mouri in all but blood for me ^^
7) Poseidon and Percy Jackson (Percy Jackson) : It’s been a while since I last was in this fandom, but my all time favourite thing always had been Poseidon and Percy’s relationship. If I remember well, they have a fascinating yet complicated relationship. It’s easy to understand as one of them is a powerful God. Althought Percy meets his father only occasionally, he cares and admires him deeply and cares very much for his approval, while Poseidon is fiercely proud of Percy and claimed him to be his favourite son yet I don’t think Poseidon ever contacted Percy since the events of the last book of the PJ series.
8) Stanley, Stanford, Mabel and Dipper Pines (Gravity Falls) : Not exactly parents, but still family in blood! We didn’t see much of Dipper and Mabel’s parents anyway, so in the show the Stan twins were their parental figures. Not perfect parental figures but they deeply care about each other and that’s the most important thing.
9) Darren Shan and Larten Crepsley (Darren Shan/Cirque du Freak) : I haven’t read all the books but I know more or less what happen in the latest books. Darren and Crepsley’s relationship has always been one of my favourite things in the books. Sure, they didn’t have the best relationship in the beginning, with Darren hating Crepsley for turning him into a vampire, but they came to know and trust each other, to the point they developped a father-son bond, and Crepsley became an important figure in Darren’s life and then book 9 killed us DX
10) Aladdin and Cassim (Aladdin) : They didn’t have the best relationship, with Cassim being a thief and having being absent for most of Aladdin’s life, but... he tried. He tried in the end and discovered Aladdin was more precious to him than any treasure or his fellow thiefs comrades, and Aladdin basically said in the third movie he missed and longed for his father. Beside, it’s almost like the trop in which the father is the villain and the son the hero, which I love :p
11) Mowgli and Bagheera (The Jungle Book) : What can I say about them? I love their relationship more than Mowgli and Baloo’s. Baloo is more like the fun and immature uncle/brother, while Bagheera is the parent figure. Bagheera, or DADheera, is the stern but loving and protective parental figure, and I love that the live action movie decided to make that clearer, and having Mowgli caring for Bagheera and wanting for him to be proud of him.
12) Aurora and Maleficent (Maleficent) : my beloved disney-ish dysfunctional family :D I just love how Diaval and Maleficent sort of became Aurora’s parental figures, and mostly Maleficent who wanted nothing more than to hate the girl, but Aurora is just a precious cinnamon roll and yes, I know most people tend to ship them in a romantic way, but I really like the mother-daughter bond they developped!!
Okay so I realise I don’t have a lot of mother-daughter or mother-son favourite relationship, but that doesn’t mean I don’t have any! I just tend to have many father-son or father-daughter or “multi family” as favourite relationships xD

30 Facts: Yuji Matsumoto Edition!
Since this is a new kid coming in like, halfway through, here have some facts!
1. Yuji Matsumoto does in fact identify as male, and at this point can no longer use the nonbinary bathrooms. Tough luck, boi.
2. When he talks, his hands gesture much more dramatically than is merited, and his facial expression and tone of voice may not always match up especially when he’s trying to be chipper. This comes from ages of manipulating Piney’s expressions by hand and voice, without his real face coming into play. He gets embarrassed when it’s pointed out, and tucks his hands away.
3. If Yuji tucks his hands on or near his face, he’s feeling vulnerable and more specifically threatened. A good tell for if you want to see if he’s going to start closing up clamlike.
4. Some quick fast food facts:
Fav Meal: Udon
Fav drink: Green Tea (I’d say matcha but n a h, he likes the cheap stuff)
Fav snack: Soy sauce flavored rice crackers
Fav desert: Custard Pudding
Fav festival food: Kakigori (sweet) and Yakisoba (savory)
5. Thrifty doesn’t even BEGIN to describe this guy. Everything is reused and reused and reused, and DIY is common enough with him. Expect him to let out a noise of terror at any wasted items.
6. Yuji considers fast food like Mcdonalds (which is honestly a tad more expensive in Japan) to be ‘friday night treat’ material.  If you took him to even a nice-ish alehouse he might die on the spot.
7. In universe, Yuji’s hair is a normal shade of hair as opposed to dyed--it would translate over best as ‘black with a greenish tint’.
8. Short list of weird things Yuji cannot stand: Firecrackers, Elvis, Falco from Star Fox, tattoos and sauce packets (this also goes for bagged food. “It’s so SLIMY”).
9. Short list of weird things Yuji actually likes: hard candy (he’ll hoard them, and take anyone’s ‘green flavors’ if they don’t want them. Oh gee, wonder why he’d want G R E E N dryad squad), coffee caked on the inside of mugs, hair (on the head that is--he thinks it’s beautiful, and completely natural so near anyone can have it), cockroaches (slugs too, general crawlies--they don’t bug him, ehehe).
10. Yuji will occasionally reach for something or type on his phone, then do something weird as hell with his hands like try to use the sides or scrunch his fingers for no good reason and overshoot his objective. An inside look at how he held things with gloves it seems. Similarly, sometimes he walks weird and overshoots his footing--those big shoes are likely to blame.
11. If you ever walk in on Yuji alone, you better expect there’s SOMETHING set up to make noise or otherwise alert in his nearby area. Wooden lids suspended in the crack of the door, temporarily ductaping a door shut, ect...by this point it’s not even worth keeping a secret, this man temporarily booby traps any area he’s in by himself. Remains of the cleanup or the direct results of a trap have probably been experienced by most of the kids here.
12. He is...still not wearing pants, much of the time. The boxers mainly. As of this past trial though, sometimes he can be seen wearing jeans when he’s out in rougher areas like the woods or something. Still no shoes though. He double layers those socks though...? This is sad.
13. He’ll freeze up if you try to ask him for a personal preference. Like, candy or cookies better? Favorite color? Ect. He goes deer in the headlights.
On that note,  Yuji’'s spent a lot of time soaking things up from the mascot environment he worked in--even during that time he was going from hotel to hotel and accepting whatever bits and pieces he found. This means he couldn’t tell you what kind of music he likes, but he could sing you the entirety of the latest Hatsune Miku concert from heart. Not that he WOULD but...
14. If people trash their food before they finish their plate, people who stick around might catch him fish it out of the trash and either finish it off or cook it into something new. Yuji, swear to God.
15. Yuji considers his experiences as Piney the experiences and actions of a separate person and dislikes the idea that specifically he reflects on Piney; rather than consider him a character he played he considers Piney ‘their own separate and genuine tree.’ He still has every memory he made as Piney of course--which makes it weird when he can relay his experiences dining at Michelin star restaurants but gets intimidated by an Applebees.
16. Oh boy. Yuji and...electronics. He’s not....a hermit? As in, he knows most of this stuff he’s not genuinely pastoral...but this man does not know how to work a snapchat. In fact he’s never so much as fiddled with any apps but the notebook and photo app. Overwatch is literally the only viddygame he knows how to play, and he does so nigh religiously now that the Overwatch Club introduced it to him.
17. Hypothetically, once Yuji got over his confused feelings for Starbucks, the green tea lattes and their iced equals would be a revelation. And while he’d eat anything he got, he wouldn’t be particularly fond of any of the foods on offer sans the Madeline cakes and Hawaiian Bagel.
18. Sometimes he just starts crying. Like, not loudly, and not show stopping, but sometimes he just starts getting his sniffle on. More often than not, this is a good sign though; happy group activities are the worst offender for this.
19. Yuji’s favorite hang outs, should you need to find him anywhere specific, are the Adventure Park (he even has some Gabu Gabu merch now!), the Ramen Shop (fixed it up and restocked so it’s ready for business) and the Home Ec room (Overwatch and, as of Chapter 8, weird...fanfiction. Do not look for his on computer account.). Please don’t note that to him though--he’ll spook and try to change up his patterns.
20. Yuji is actually not a bad singer! If you can drag him into a karaoke situation, catch him pullin out his voice claim!
21. Apparently now that he’s out of suit, he’s more willing to share a few trade secrets. For example, according to him he was the only one of the mascots who was manned by only one ‘friend’, and most of the others had interchangeable buddies specialized in whatever the mascot needed to do for the variety show episode. This was everything from cooking to acrobatics to even ex soldiers for extreme stuntman activity. Apparently out of pity or respect, some of these guys gave the tree some variety lessons to help make life a little easier for him.
22. Yuji’s real birthday is actually on May 4th. This is the same day as Japanese Arbor day, as well as the same birthday as the famous fictional detective, Shinichi Kudo.
23. As Ryouji respawned with his own non-blood splattered necklace, Yuji has the original blood splattered one still. Now he’s no longer in suit though he wears it around his neck and tucked under his shirt collar rather than on his far less protected wrist.
24. Yuji’s terrible about gaining crushes on people quickly and holding onto them for a long time. His list (with varying intensity) for this crew has been:
- Ryouji (big time)
- Charmayne (big time)
- Ebull
- Hanako
- Tomoka (for .5 seconds at a time)
- Madoka (on first impressions alone)
- Kazuko (if not full blown at LEAST on the rise)
There is also the moderate threat of Tadashi joining this list, and an honorable mention for Ailani who was never crushed on but WAS friend-crushed on (wanting to be her friend) and Ryan who is not crushed on but HAS caused some stupid sexy flanders moments for the guy (some unbidden dokis).
Yuji makes a point of crushing, even loving, very unobtrusively though--it’s perfectly possible to remain friends with him even if he’s crushing on you and never have it Become Business. So no worries or obligations there!
25. For the ‘super Japanese foods’, Yuji’s very on board for eating eel, squid, seaweed, mentaiko, ikura, and even natto and as far as sanshouo (rarely, he feels a little bad about it but it does remind him of Spirited Away). However, he won’t touch Horse meat, ume and takoyaki (the last one not for the flavor, but for a moral respect for the octopus. He’ll have hotdog substitute though!)
26. Yuji has a soft spot for french bakeries. For a lot of his time living by his seams in Ikebukuro, steals from the French style bakeries dumpsters were by far the best meals. He feels like he personally owes them a lot, even if Udon will forever be his true love.
27. If you’re new to Japan and want to try all the holes in the wall without running into anything illicit, Yuji’s pretty handy to bring along for the ride. He can sniff out the difference between a “snack bar” and a yakuza run “Snaku Bar” by sign font alone and fear alone. More than anything though he knows Ikebukuro specifically, especially close to the train station, like the back of his hand.
28. This guy has an odd little kind of ‘eclectic spiritualism’ that mixes standard casual Buddist and Shinto stuff with some personal rituals, magical thinking and fascination with fantastical energies like Japanese Youkai and Western Tarot. More than anything though, this is a very casual system that focuses on a strict and hands on calculated version of Karma. Give and take, pay your literal dues, receive fortune and punishment as you earn it.
This has contributed to ‘totem collecting’ from what he can find to represent the dead students, feeling that holding them safe will in turn grant safety to them in the afterlife--or now, outside of the sim. As Piney he was never allowed to admit to endorsing nor holding a religion, so now while he won’t go parading it around it isn’t so much a secret anymore.
29. Yuji’s verbal tone is a sliding scale. The more nervous he gets the more youthful he sounds, at his worst off channeling Scooby Doo’s Shaggy with full voice crack and warble. You can tell he’s at his most stable when he stops fidgeting, plants his feet and starts calling people ‘kid.’ At that point he’s got a near gruff tone that sounds a tad Adachi-esque. His middleground is like, a disgruntled and fashion blind version of Vincent from Catherine, about.
30. HIS favorite mascot? Either Purin the Dog from Saniro or Funashi. Purin is a good design he’s personally weak towards, but Funashi is an inspiration. He’d say “With that expressive waist hoop and the thin cloth making it easy to move around, that must be one hell of a fun set up to play with.”
