What do you think of Iyozane? Fumikado?

i've been meaning to draw both of them actually!! they're some of my favorite designs (and characters in general) from the whole game

(infodump under the cut)

i'll start off by saying hopefully none of this is worded too weirdly! a lot of my thoughts are a bit hard to put into words, plus it's been around a month since i finished the games (i did reread a bit of content just to write all this though.)

starting off with iyo! i think they're one of the most well-written characters (pretty much every len'en character is well written in my opinion, but iyozane sticks out to me), especially their backstory with mitori. it's something you're not expecting on the first play-through, and it really does leave an impact.

it's really nice how iyozane and mitori seem to be so comfortable talking to each other, even after years of being apart. i like to think that it just shows how close they were back when iyozane was the crown prince.

a small thing i enjoyed is how they just drop such crucial information while acting like they aren't big deals, which mitori seems to do as well lol

mitori remarks that iyozane is good at playing dumb, and even though it's never explicitly stated, i imagine that you would need to get good at that if your family is so strict that they put you under house arrest.

even with just the information that's stated in the games, i think it's easy to tell how strong iyozane is, both as a character and a person. like i said earlier, their past doesn't seem to matter too much to them in present day, being able to easily admit that they were poisoned and all.

it's stated in their profile that they do want to be influential in some way, which i really like! usually with a character like this, they wouldn't want to be noticed or have power, so it's a nice subversion of expectations.

for fumikado it's a bit harder to say exactly what i enjoy about them, i just know that they're a character that i really do like reading about.

something that comes to mind almost instantly has to be their past. we know that they've betrayed both para and chouki, though they don't seem to have much of a problem admitting these things.

despite this, both iyozane and tsugumi remark that they aren't the type of person to abandon their friends/allies:

i'm usually a fan of flawed characters and i do have to admit i LOVE fumikado... i didn't think too much of them at the beginning but the more i read about them the more i started to love their characterization.

it's always nice when characters have done bad things in the past but aren't downright evil, which i think is a description that fits fumikado well. i never interpreted them as someone who was extremely malicious, mostly that their loyalty to their grandfather was so strong that they disregarded all morals.

i really enjoyed seeing both of them together too! their personalities work well with one another. plus the scene of them in fumikado's RMI profile is adorable

64 Reasons You Should Vote For Iyozane In The Next Popularity Poll

Someone on Discord said they'd vote for Iyozane if I came up with 64 reasons why they should. Naturally, as the number one Iyozane fan of the fandom, I took up that challenge. Of course, I couldn't come up with all of these reasons on my own! I also had some help from some discord buddies. Their names are BlueKirby, Tree, snaa, my man, and showtime. Now, let us begin~

They're pathetic.

They say "heek!" sometimes and I think if they had voiced lines that particular line would be cute.

They have so much audacity (based on "Well I'm related aren't I?" in response to Tsugumi's shock at them being the former crown prince).

Sometimes they say shocking things and don't elaborate (based on the entire New Emperor Brilliant Route).

They seem too stubborn to give up on things, even when they probably should (this is based on them still boating people across the strait despite the capital getting a ferryboat and sticking with Fumikado despite the plan failing).

They want to be a pirate (pirates are cool).

Despite not being a proper pirate, they have a spell card named "Great Pirate Iyozane" (it's hilarious).

They're friends with ghosts.

Their ghost friends are adorable.

In BoTC their ghost friends spin (this is FanBOX exclusive content as of now but trust me it's adorable).

They're cool.

They can play many instruments.

They carry around a flute in RMI.

They carry around a paddle in BPoHC.

They have a tragic backstory (perfect for angst).

They used to be the crown prince (come on, I know there has to be at least one monarchist in this fandom).

You can ship them with many characters, such as Fumikado, Kunimitsu, Tsugumi, and maybe even Kaoru if you try hard enough.

Their design isn't too complicated, which makes them easy to draw.

Their color scheme is calming.

They look like they taste like candy.

Their last name, Fujiwara, can be translated to "Wisteria Field", and wisterias are very pretty~

Their RMI theme slaps.

Their BPoHC theme slaps.

Sometimes they say "yousoro" and I think it's cute (which is translated as "steady as she goes" within Len'en, but I like the way "yousoro" rolls off the tongue better).

According to Mitori, Iyozane is good at playing dumb (imagine the implications for their characterization).

Despite having the desire to be influential, Iyozane has no idea what they're going to do with said influence once they achieve it. (I think it's funny.)

Their spell cards are filled with cool references to boats and the afterlife and whatnot.

They throw lanterns at you in one spell card.

They also have a boat in one of their spell cards.

In a couple of their spell cards they have spirits. These spirits look like flames and it's very cool.

Their spell card background is pretty.

They have consistent safe spots.

Their bomb sounds cool.

Their clothes look soft.

Some of their clothing articles are shiny.

They have big poofy sleeves, both on their shirt and their shoulder jacket.

They don't wear shoes.

Their defeated RMI portrait makes their flute look like it has a bandage on it (I think it's funny).

OH BOY DO I EVER

Okay so like...one of them only really works in my AU (which started off as "what if Len'en but KKHTA" but is now more like "grimdark Len'en that's a stealth sequel to KKHTA"). Also it's fairly NSFW so. It goes in a different post! :D

(Content warning for panic attacks and brief gore)

Nightmares

Sometimes Kuroji has nightmares.

They're always the same, always from their time at the army. Or rather, the potential consequences of them not following orders.

They're not realistic, they know. Why would the army kill off Tsubakura, just because they didn't follow every exact order? It would be inefficient and wasteful.

But Kuroji saw the look in the general's eyes when he warned them about the consequences of their actions. Of how he knew just how high in regard they hold Enraku.

Kuroji can still feel blood on their hands when they awaken, the visions of Tsubakura's severed head placed neatly in their work locker still vivid.

These nightmares trail them all the way to Mugenri. One night, Saragimaru awakens to the sound of Kuroji screaming.

Their naginata and katana are in their hands faster than one can blink. But after taking stock of the cabin, they soon learn that there was no intruder. Only themselves, Aoji, Hooaka, and a Kuroji they've never seen before.

They've stopped screaming, but now Kuroji's muttering something too quiet for Saragimaru to hear. They're clutching the bed sheets, tears pouring down in full force.

Hooaka pulls them into hug, murmuring loudly enough for Saragimaru to hear, "It's alright, you're alright. We're in Mugenri now. Tsubakura is sleeping at the Senri Shrine. The general's not here. You're safe now."

Aoji begins to climb out of the bed, but stops when they see Saragimaru at the doorway, naginata and katana at hand. They lock eyes with the Orochi, a tired and solemn look in their own green eyes.

The two of them stay like this, unmoving, until Hooaka calls out, "Aoji? Get the tissues."

Wordlessly, Aoji complies, finally breaking eye contact with Saragimaru. Hooaka has yet to acknowledge their presence.

The next morning, Kuroji was back to their usual haughty self. In fact, none of the Shitodo's were acting like anything out of the ordinary had happened last night.

Saragimaru wanted to say something, for someone to break this uneasy silence. But no words form, not until Kuroji and Hooaka leave the cabin and Saragimaru finds themselves alone with Aoji.

"You're probably wonder what that was last night," Aoji says quietly, approaching Saragimaru at their post.

They didn't say anything, but the look they gave Aoji was encouragement enough.

So Aoji began. The tale of the Scholar of Prehistory, laid out before before Saragimaru.

When Kuroji came back, Saragimaru still hated the way they ordered them around. But there was something in their expression now, something that Kuroji didn't like.

Saragimaru did as they said, avoiding the icy glare Kuroji gave them. Yes, they still couldn't forgive them, but they hoped that one day Kuroji would forgive themselves.
