Songhwa and Her Need for Companionship
Hospital Playlist S2E2
Tumblr media
Amongst the many themes Episode 2 covered, companionship was a big one. Life consists of multiple hurdles, hurdles that all too often would be unbearable were it not for the support of our family, friends, and colleagues. In times of hardship, having someone by your side can make all the difference, and Hospital Playlist showcases this in many ways throughout the episode. The show makes it a point to highlight out how Seokhyung’s patient’s husband takes a day off work to care for his pregnant wife, and how two mothers find comfort and strength in each other through their similar situations.
Tumblr media
Our doctors are not immune to their own need for companionship. Seokhyung finds himself relying on Minha during his complicated case, and on Ikjun in the tragic aftermath of it. Meanwhile, Junwan seeks out Iksun to share the good news of his successful surgery.
The theme of companionship is particularly emphasized when it comes to Songhwa, as the show takes efforts to show us that Songhwa’s accomplishments are not solely the fruit of her individual efforts, but due to the collective blood, sweat and tears of many. What Songhwa is today is the product of the many years she spent training under mentors of her own (similar to what she is to Seonbin). And what Songhwa continues to be the result of the teamwork between her and her residents/fellows.
Tumblr media
Episode 2 of Season 1 focused on what made Songhwa so successful as an individual — her self-sufficiency, her punctuality, her independence. Episode 2 of Season 2 intended to humanize her by highlighting how she succeeds despite the difficulties she faces because of the people around her. Songhwa isn’t perfect — without the hand Seokmin lent her during the surgery, she wouldn’t have been able to remove the tumour as effectively.
Tumblr media
And this need for support extends beyond her professional life into her personal as well. Like everyone else we saw this episode, Songhwa is missing a shoulder to lean on, an ear to confide to. She’s shown resting alone in a dimly lit room, and while she doesn’t explicitly express the desire to have someone by her side, she doesn’t need to — that scene alone speaks volumes.
Tumblr media
It’s why the scene at the end affects us so deeply — because just as Songhwa packs her bags in the middle of the night and her lack of a companion is made glaringly clear, we find out that Songhwa is not alone after all, and how that presence fills in the gaps in Songhwa’s life so beautifully. For Songhwa, home has ceased to be a place. With frequent trips between Sokcho and Seoul, I doubt she’s ever sleeping in her own bed at night. When home ceases to be a place, one often finds home in a person. Perhaps Songhwa, in the midst of her hectic back and forth, will eventually find stability in Ikjun.
Tumblr media
This is exact kind of development that needs to happen for IkSong to flourish. What Songhwa needs isn’t to fall in love with Ikjun but rather to want a long-term relationship in the first place. Only when she wants to invest in a future with someone will she find it worthwhile to take the risk. Songhwa has always seen the beauty in companionship, in coming home to someone — she’s just never imagined being that person herself since her career and her patients have always been first priority for her.
But Ikjun’s small gestures might eventually bring her to realize that it’s possible to have both things — that perhaps she might even want both things after all. Which will eventually push her to take that first step towards him. After all, look how happy he makes her?!

[spoilers] hospital playlist s2 ep 8; ikjun/songhwa
Oh, how beautiful is this ship? How beautiful are the scenes we got in this episode that all I can do is clutch my heart and cry over the fact that I will never find a love like theirs or a lee ikjun in my life? ;_;
How significant it was that the scene we all hope to see which is Songhwa showing her vulnerability after being portrayed as someone perfect for 19 episodes, is placed together with Ikjun dropping by to see her? How breathtaking it was as a viewer, for Songhwa to admit that her mother had Parkinson’s Disease, instead of assuring him that everything was okay? That silence between them, filled with so much words, the conclusion that Ikjun came to that the one thing Songhwa needs at the moment was to be home with her mom -- “Shouldn’t you be at home?” was his first response, and seeing how distraught and broken Songhwa had been, he offered to give her a ride.
Tumblr media
(gif credits to: @ madebyjoa on twitter)
And Songhwa, god, Songhwa (major props to the loml Jeon Mido for her acting), the way she looked at him, paused for a few long seconds before her voice broke as she told him, “Yes, please,”
When Ikjun stayed because he didn’t want to leave her alone, and she was there with her eyes closed tightly. Perhaps in that moment he wondered if he should hug her - the distance between them was noticeable yet it wasn’t a distance that should be taken in negativity. He gave her space. Because Ikjun knew that a hug probably wasn’t what she needed in that moment. All he could think about was; I need to get her back home to her mom.
Tumblr media
gif credit: LASTSTAR_act on Twitter
His saga continues the next day when he realised Songhwa was still feeling under the weather. The scenes were borderline comedic, but his intentions shone from the way he stood outside her door, guarding it and preventing anyone from disturbing her. Because Songhwa wasn’t the type to say no to people’s request - for her to even turn down Seonbin and the rest of her juniors in their thesis checking was already a huge step for her. But there you have Ikjun, giving her just what she needed at that moment which was rest.
I think what stood out to me most is that Ikjun always does all of this for Songhwa without any expectations to receive anything in return. He doesn’t even need her to know that he is doing this for her. His love for her is so unconditional that I just cry in frustration that Ikjun is just a fictional man ;_;
Tumblr media
And then finally. The best scene to end this arc - when Ikjun gifted her the stone grill she has had her eyes on since their KBBQ dinner with the rest of the boys. He remembered she liked it, and he scoured the internet the whole night for a replica of it.
His simple gesture of love, capable enough to make her laugh and smile after the entire day of being weary and worn down by guilt and frustration.
Tumblr media
Her happiness equates to his happiness, and that is enough for him.
Beautiful. This episode, this arc, this script writing, this ship. Absolutely, undoubtedly beautiful.

[spoilers] hosplay season 2 ep3 - ikjun/songhwa
I am on cloud nine.
When I posted my theories about ep 1 two weeks ago, never would I have expected such a huge development to happen 2 episodes after! This episode is what I will describe as Songhwa’s preliminary realisation, and the catalyst for this is told through the perspectives of two people in this episode.
TL;DR: This is a sign that Ikjun and Songhwa are now positively moving in the direction of endgame!!!
Tumblr media
cr: _fever_pitch @ twitter
This scene made me smile so hard! While Songhwa may have asked Ikjun for dinner because she wanted to ask him about DLL, the fact that she initiated it by literally using Ikjun’s iconic “let’s eat” line, speaks a lot. I love the way Ikjun’s face lighted up in an instant when he realised it’s Songhwa.
What I realised also is that he even invited Junwan to eat with them in the cafeteria - maybe he didn’t want to burden Songhwa since they would be alone? Or maybe he was just trying to protect his own heart, we cannot be too sure but definitely, Ikjun-ah, best boi you, best boi.
The next scene that comes is definitely one scene that highlights their dynamics as work partners. Other than the fact that Ikjun knew Songhwa was worried over something and asked her to just speak up just by looking at her stirring her food, it seems that Ikjun/Songhwa approach things in a somewhat similar wavelength.
Tumblr media
Ikjun points out at once that “we can help them”, to which Songhwa confirms saying that she already told them they could.
Tumblr media
When Ikjun says that it doesn’t matter if the patients do it in a different hospital in Seoul because DLL can still provide financial support - Songhwa replies “I told them that”.
Tumblr media
And when Songhwa said DLL will contact Yulje, because the other university hospitals aren’t willing to take the case, Ikjun agreed and said “good”.
Ugh, I absolutely love their rapport here. It shows understanding and compatibility between two friends who clearly share the same opinions about certain things and I love that they’re working together for DLL.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Ms Songhwa saying this line just shows that she values and trusts Ikjun’s judgement. Just as how she whole heartedly believed him when he told her that a “Villain” is someone who works hard to pay bills (BUAHAHA I can’t wait for her to realise the truth and strangle Ikjun).
Tumblr media
Ma’am, why do you look like him as he is leaving like he is your entire world?
Coughs. Moving on!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Heo Seonbin~~ Just like how long have you observed your Professor and her best friend that you’re able to form this sort of conclusion that he always makes her laugh and that he will ‘totally’ do it for her if she asks?
Of course, this whole fake dating thing didn’t materialise because Songhwa isn’t the type to go for that - plus she respects Ikjun’s feelings, I’m sure, so she wouldn’t want to put him in that sort of confusing situation after knowing how he feels for her.
But I have a strong feeling that this scene is strategically placed for a reason and that is to nudge Songhwa towards the realisation that other people are seeing something special between them despite her insistence many times that they’re just friends. And who is the best to tell her that other than Seonbin, who is practically the closest friend that she has at this point that isn’t part of her gang.
In the previous episode, I posted a theory from a kfan that Ikjun was the one who asked for Seokmin’s favour to scrub in the Violinist’s surgery to ease Songhwa’s burden, and that the strawberry cake Seonbin brought for Songhwa towards the end of the ep, was actually bought by Ikjun. This theory remains as a theory until proven otherwise but I live for the fact that SilverDragon may be the ones playing cupid for their Professor this season. I mean, Songhwa did play cupid for them in S1, right?
Kekeke, now, onto my favourite scene of the episode. Kyuhyung’s cameo as Gyeongjin’s brother! I still cannot believe we got this scene handed to us on a silver platter but dude, it’s a complete parallel to IkSong and I absolutely LIVE for Songhwa’s expressions during Hanyang’s (I’ll just call him that) story telling.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Songhwa drank her coffee twice - girlie probably felt so called out that she was flustered and had to busy her hands with something. That’s human tendency, anyway. And we know from EP 1 that her rejection didn’t address Ikjun’s confession in its entirety. So for Hanyang to say “my answer didn’t make sense,” could very well be what Songhwa had in the back of her mind after her rejection, or what she will now realise moving forward.
Tumblr media
“As a man and a woman, not just friends.”
A foreshadow, I hope? Because I am betting that this entire scene will play out in Songhwa’s mind over and over again. He is the catalyst she needs at this point of time to realise that the risk is worth taking.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The best line ever. It’s so simple yet so profound. So realistic, too. Because we know exactly who it is that is capable of making Songhwa feel happy. It’s the one person that always makes her laugh. And what more do you need, honestly?
What struck me, as I’ve mentioned on Twitter, is that the scene could have just ended after Hanyang said this line - that being with his gf makes him happy/great. But instead, we got a follow up question from him in that he quite literally ASKED her straight up, if she had someone like that in her life too.
And...guess who showed up at that very moment? Casually, without any hint of jealousy or envy but just decided to stick a straw into his nose?
Tumblr media
cr: milly_v_v @ twitter
And made her laugh...without fail again?
I’m not crying, I swear.
My mind is officially at ease, because it seems that IkSong is definitely now headed towards the right direction. ShinLee really wasn’t joking when he put triple Rainbows during the drive in the tunnel. Triple Rainbow...for three episodes? Kekeke.
I’m thinking that Songhwa may still need one or two more eps to sort out her feelings, but by Ep 6 I’m guessing she will finally take the first step towards a relationship with Ikjun. But hey, I’m always prepared to be surprised in the best ways possible (like this entire scene in Ep3) by ShinLee.

[spoilers] hospital playlist s2 ep 11; ikjun/songhwa
I can’t believe this finally happened. And it happened in arguably the best ways possible for us IkSong shippers. As usual, this post is just basically my own thoughts and opinion of the episode and my interpretation of things - feel free to disagree, and I hope you enjoy reading this musing of mine!
Tumblr media
22 years later, finally they found each other again <3
TL;DR: Everything happens for a reason and we have finally reached the rainbow end <3
Let’s begin by addressing the ER scene, but before that, I would like to point out that since Ep 10, Songhwa has been shown to be somewhat forgetful and a klutz - in Ep 10, she was searching for her socks and insisted that she wore them for her rounds. She also seemed to have forgotten to take off her surgical cap until Seonbin pointed it out to her.
In Ep 11, the episode starts off with Songhwa leaving her handbag in Ikjun’s office, and subsequently her handphone, followed by her handbag in the car again. This is not a dementia arc, guys (haha) but I genuinely think that this is her mind being occupied by her newly realised feelings for Ikjun that her normally composed self had started to crumble (and that’s entirely ok!). Another interpretation of this scene could be that unintentionally and subconsciously, she just wanted to remain in the hospital knowing Ikjun may return to collect his gift later.
Can I also point out her sixth sense in this scene? When she peered out of her window and heard the sound of ambulance, followed immediately by Dr Bong calling, she looked disturbed. Normally, she would have answered her calls immediately without hesitation but this time you could tell that she frowned and waited for maybe 2 seconds before answering Dr Bong. Well, never messed with a woman’s intuition I guess!
The ER Scene. Gosh. I actually have a lot of things to say about this. I know some people do not like this trope and that it is a typical trigger for characters to realise their feelings. But, I’d have to say that ShinLee did not intend for this scene to be a trigger of Songhwa realising that she likes Ikjun.
Because she already knows and had realised, somewhere around Ep 8-9 but more obviously 9, that she does like him as a man (all over again). If anything, this ER scene was meant to give Songhwa that one last push to confess, otherwise she may end up regretting not to. Another reason why I felt this scene was necessary was that Songhwa has been too comfortable in Ikjun’s constant presence by her side -- perhaps she has been wanting to confess but still lack the courage to and she didn’t think she needed to act on it rightaway because Ikjun would always be there by her side.
Gosh, the way she rushed to Ikjun and didn’t even hear Dr Bong trying to report to her that he actually wasn’t in such a terrible state. The way she slipped her hand in his and was so gentle in her questions - you can really just tell that she was trying her best not to crumble.
Tumblr media
(side note: Jeon Mido, your acting was truly stellar during this scene. That suppressed professionalism vs personal feelings. I really felt her worry and regret in this entire scene. I loved it so much)
Now, why do I firmly believe that Songhwa already intends to confess to Ikjun eventually? Other than the fact that Songhwa herself confirmed during her confession that “I should have told you that I liked you”, it’s because of the Gift that she has given him for his birthday. It’s a cap, and initially we don’t think much of it until the flashback sequence showed and we realised that, a cap was what 99z Songhwa wanted to give to Ikjun but never did because he had turned her down for dinner and lied that he has a blind date.
Present day Songhwa gifting Ikjun a cap can be interpreted as her having let go of the hurt he had caused her in the past and that she was willing to try, again.
Interestingly, I’d like to also point out that the 99z flashback in this episode was truly necessary for us to understand Songhwa’s aversion to ‘Sad Sea’ and why she has rejected Ikjun in the first episode. 99z Songhwa didn’t give up when Ikjun stood her up for her birthday but mustered the courage to confess to him - she tried twice too, asking if he really has to go on that blind date that evening and couldn’t he go another time? Ikjun, in that scene, was playing Sad Sea.
I would like to apologise to Ep 7 Songhwa because I had been frustrated with her then, but now that everything has been rolled out beautifully, I do not blame her at all for her hesitancy and year long passiveness. Ikjun kinda deserved it after breaking her heart twice (HA!) and remember this shot of Ikjun in Ep 7?
Tumblr media
I now interpret this scene as him realising that he knew Songhwa’s reasons of rejecting him. Because there was no way he didn’t know that Songhwa had liked him in the 99z, and he was perhaps regretting turning her down for dinner that day during his birthday. He knew he had a chance with her then but blew it, and that is perhaps why he never faltered in making Songhwa happy now. Not that he expects anything in return, but perhaps he wanted to make up for the indirect hurt he had caused her.
Bab Meokja had been something initiated by Songhwa back then. And now, it is a treat he gives himself -- I really do think that is the reason why he keeps asking Songhwa out for meals in the present time, because Ikjun probably wanted to indrectly make up for what happened in 99z.
Let’s move on to another great scene! The card game scene!
For some, it may seem to be a random scene but for me, I saw it in a different way and I’m glad Kfans and some users on Twitter pointed out this theory as well.
As you all know, the card game IkSong was playing was “Bluff/Cheat”. Here, you could see that Ikjun could read Songhwa so well that he knows when she would lie. But Songhwa on the other hand, could not read Ikjun as well -- and this is further affirmed by Songhwa’s confession when she said “If your feelings for me haven’t changed,”. This is beautiful because it makes Ikjun’s expression during the confession scene even more sense -- a user on reddit pointed out that his expression at that time wasn’t more of a “omg she likes me after all”, it was more of a “she has realised her feelings for me,” and I think that’s absolutely beautiful. He even nodded subtlely a few times as Songhwa struggled to get her confession out, as if encouraging her and saying “you can do it, just a bit more”.
Back to the card game - Ikjun even threw down a 9 Hearts - which I believe is a metaphor of his feelings for her, steady and still unwavering.
(Bonus note: I absolutely love how Iksun caught on to them being lovey dovey at once and Junwan’s expression catching them was HILARIOUS)
On to my next scene which was absolute favourite.
Songhwa had finished a difficult/challenging surgery, and out of excitement (she even skipped omg whipped girlie), she called Ikjun first to convey the good news to him. Her tone here really depicts a difference in how she talks to Ikjun before. This scene alone tells you that Songhwa has pretty much fallen for Ikjun again and I love love love that finally she has someone she would want to immediately call to share her good news with!
Tumblr media
And the best part? Our best boy Lee Ikjun never went to Changwon. Instead, he waited for her for probably hours (it was bright day when they said goodbye, but night when Songhwa returned to her office) and even told her straight that he has to see her before he leaves because of how worried she had been before. Good lord find me a man like Ikjun please?
Tumblr media
image cr: iksongarchives @ twitter
This entire shot, with I Knew I Love playing in the background pretty much hits. It is in this exact moment that Songhwa has probably made up her mind to confess for real, that she wasn’t going to waste another second because I am sooo sure she would have ran to hug him if not because of their status at that moment. I love this scene so much. It is the personification of the lyrics of I Knew I Love, which goes “I called you out of habit today and you answered warmly, you make me the happiest in the whole wide world, I love you so much”.
And finally.
Finally.
*takes a deep breath*
SONGHWA CONFESSED!!!!!!!!
AND THEY KISSED!!!! UNDER THE RAIN!!!
The whole directing of this scene, with the slow camera panning into them - Ikjun was restless, probably breaking into cold sweats (he commented it was cold) while Songhwa was nervous and trying to muster enough courage to confess (she commented it was really hot). I held my breath for so long I felt like I was about to faint I swear to god.
Songhwa looked legit terrified that Ikjun was going to reject her man, and it all makes sense why after we got the 99z flashback this episode.
Tumblr media
And Ikjun, he really waited for her cues. Even after she was done confessing, he looked at her and waited for her to look at him back before he went “I’ll give you my answer”. And it was only after Songhwa nodded in fear and anticipation, that he swooped in to kiss her!!!!!
Songhwa definitely also leaned in first before Ikjun pulled her closer. She wanted this just as much as he did and it showed through their first kiss. Gosh I’m still shaking just thinking about how perfect that entire sequence and kiss was. They really went all out for it (yes I believe there was tongue involved) rather than soft and gentle. 22 years of suppressed yearning and feelings really popped out in that kiss alone and I am so blessed to have been a part of their beautiful journey.
And now, with only one episode left, we are finally able to see IkSong as a couple and on dates. I have a feeling Songhwa would be the clingy gf man, judging from the Preview keke. I cannot wait to see the rest of the boys finding out, and for sure, I cannot wait to see how their dynamics would change now as lovers rather than just best friends. I do think their transition would be seamless, only that now, they get to do what other lovers could.
This post is so long but I felt the need to address another matter that I have seen roaming around the internet. Apparently, some people are annoyed that Songhwa was ‘forced to change her mind’ and that we cannot accept her ‘No’ in ep 1. I would humbly and respectfully disagree on this point. Songhwa’s ‘No’ in ep 1 was not a “I don’t like you therefore I am rejecting you”. It was more of a “I do not know how to sort out my feelings yet, and am not ready to revisit the past, so it is best not to tamper with it”.
Songhwa did not change her mind overnight or weeks. It took her one year and a few months. She has had all that time to weighs her decisions again and properly thought out how she wanted to bring forward her relationship with Ikjun. She was not forced.
She may have said that she liked being single in S1, but she has never been averse to love. In fact, she is always encouraging other people to go for it. I for one, am single and absolutely enjoying it. But that doesn’t mean I’m not going to ever change my mind if I find someone worthy enough to share my space and happiness with. I like being single now because guys around me are idiots and I’d rather save myself that headache LOL.
Her conscious decision to accept Ikjun now does not and will never invalidate her decision to reject him back then - in fact, it goes to show that as human beings, we constantly undergo character growth and our minds are often changed to suit the present circumstances.
ShinLee did not portray Songhwa in that light where ‘women needs to say yes if a guy treats her right’. Ikjun did all of those things for her without expecting anything in return. He never once crossed the line and never once forced Songhwa into accepting his love for her. Songhwa said yes because she likes Ikjun and is now ready to move their relationship to that of romantic. It is as simple as that.
And one last point to make is that Songhwa being in a relationship does not in any way invalidate that she is a strong and independent woman. Please do not associate the relationship status of a woman to her being ‘strong/independent’. A woman in a relationship and a woman not being a relationship are still BOTH strong AND independent. Love is a universal element in life, why deprive a person of it simply because she’s portrayed to be a “strong” female character? If that love brings her greater joy and ardent happiness, why stop her from enriching her life further?
Anyway. I digress.
If you made it until the end of this ridiculously long post, thank you. I hope it was an enjoyable read! Till Ep 12!

[spoilers] hospital playlist s2 ep 7; ikjun/songhwa
Hello!!! I disappeared a bit after Ep 4 bc I’ve been busy and I thought there weren’t much for me to talk about so I didn’t make time to write this post. But since I cannot stop thinking about Ep 7, here is my usual casual ramblings about the IkSong moments we got from Ep 7!
It won’t be too long, just my usual nonsensical takes on Songhwa’s POV as we once again were given only implied crumbs, rather than express (I really do hope we will get a proper conversation between them soon).
TL;DR: A potential glimpse of Songhwa’s past and Ikjun’s realisation that maybe this isn’t enough for him?
Tumblr media
Ikjun the inssa and Songhwa who is forever amused and clearly looks at him in an endearing manner. All of these smiles were directed to Ikjun and probably happened in a span of 10-15 minutes on their way to the cafeteria? Anyway, I will always love any scenes where Songhwa smiles/laughs because of Ikjun’s antics. She truly does have him in a special place in her heart (romantic or not).
Tumblr media
It seems that after lunch in the cafeteria, Songhwa continues to spend the remaining free time she has with Ikjun. She even brings him coffee and watches Uju dancing in the video Wang imo sent him.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Ikjun realises at once that Songhwa is cold, and without hesitation, hands his jacket to him. She accepts it gratuitously and wears it again without hesitation. Hmm~~
Tumblr media
Will I ever shut up about how much Ikjun makes Songhwa laugh? Never. The answer is never.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
During camping, we see IkSong continuing their usual rapport of ease and comfort. Notice how they talked from when the sun is still above their head until night time has befallen them and they drank from one can of beer to a few cans and it’s 1AM all of a sudden? They’re mighty comfortable with each other. They share conversations that range from anything to everything.
And nothing. At the end of this entire camping sequence, Songhwa bids goodnight to Ikjun and retreats into her tent, and Ikjun stares at her forlornly with a look we can only decipher as underlying sadness. Ouch. This is when I realised that he is still pining over her. That one year and three months where he has loved her unconditionally may not be the only thing he wants for the rest of his life.
Tumblr media
And that hurts. As a viewer, to see Ikjun react this way. The smile he has on his face as he looks after her retreating back is one filled with so much ache that I really hope that after this, he distances himself from Songhwa a bit, or at least let her know that whatever it is between them - it isn’t enough for him. Communication, please, both of you.
I don’t know what ShinLee plans to do for IkSong - there are so many things left unsaid and this could have been the perfect moment to address feelings, but they didn’t seize this opportunity. I have a strong instinct that it’s because Songhwa is still afraid, for some reason, to open up her heart again. I say this because:-
Tumblr media
Songhwa still remembers that Ikjun used to always play that one particular song in his guitar. Based on Martha’s (chocoscrunchies @ twitter) tweet, the meaning of that song is this:-
Tumblr media
... :’))) maybe i’m not crying.
Tumblr media
My interpretation of this scene is that because things are so comfortable between them, Songhwa let her guard falter - that careful wall she has built around her youth and first love. Of course she would remember something as trivial as that right, because it is her first love who had played the song throughout the year. And when Ikjun pointed that “you have a good memory”, she realised that she’d slipped and decided to once again seize control of the situation by retreating. That was why she quickly declined to hear the song that would probably stir some dormant memories in her heart that she’d carefully sealed away. She gave a feeble excuse that it’s bad manners to play music on a campground.
And then she said goodnight.
But did she really sleep that night?
At this point, I’m a little tired that all we’ve gotten so far are implications. I’d be honest and say that I’m tired of guessing. We can harp all we want about Songhwa’s POV being all the smiles and laughter she had given Ikjun, but that’s just it, you know? They may well be platonic gestures at the end of the day so I want something concrete and express from Songhwa.
I still believe they will be endgame though, but before that happens I really need them to desperately talk feelings to each other.
Songhwa needs to tell Ikjun the reason for her hesitation and what he used to mean to her. What he still means to her.
And Ikjun needs to tell her that this rapport between them is hurting him because it seems he does want something more.
I say this as the biggest IkSong stockholder, who loves Songhwa and Ikjun individually with all her heart; I just want both of them to be happy, and at the rate we are going it would seem that Ikjun is merely hiding his sadness behind all the smiles he would give her. And I just don’t think it’s fair for him to keep doing that.
Songhwa on the other hand is clearly getting too comfortable with their currently label-less relationship. There needs to be something that triggers her into realising she wants something more with Ikjun because there is no way they’re going to remain like this forever, not when one party is already hurting silently.
To hoping the remaining episodes give our characters the happiness they deserve.

[spoilers] hosplay season 2 ep 4; ikjun/songhwa
Ah, Ep 4 gave me mixed feelings. IkSong aside, this episode had a lot of things happening at once so my emotions were quite literally thrown from one end to another in like split seconds. There are things I liked about this ep and things that I didn’t, but for the sake of uniformity I will stick to talking about IkSong in my tumblr posts!
Again, this is just my opinion and mostly musings of my own.
TL;DR: Songhwa is taking first steps towards spending time alone with Ikjun and hopefully discovering things along the way!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I loved how we got Songhwa calling Ikjun in this instance and telling him excitedly that the cafeteria is serving drumsticks! This moment may seem insignificant to non-shippers but I think it goes in line with the whole “steadily and slowly” principle for this slowburn couple. It shows that Songhwa is slowly reaching out to Ikjun again and I like that we got to see this invitation!
Tumblr media
She called him again even knowing that he already has a lunch date keke and this time Ikjun is keen to leave bc of obvious reasons - he didn’t want to 5th wheel a couple and a potential couple (his new targets? hahah).
Tumblr media
The fact that Ikjun never said “Songhwa-ya” but Seokhyung KNOWS it is Songhwa? I wonder what gave that away? His tone? The way he smiled? Or was it simply Seokhyung’s intuition? I always thought that Seokhyung is a pretty observant person, he just doesn’t say things out loud but he definitely knows what is happening around him.
Tumblr media
She even bought coffee for him <3 I am loving this two way street.
Also, this entire scene was honestly made up of the most random conversations ever. But, it’s a conversation that is so in tune to IkSong. It shows mundane and domesticity because they’re discussing about their mothers sending them way too much side dishes despite being grown adults. I love this. The only other time Songhwa has ever spoken something personal about her family was during Sujebi where she told him about her father’s hearing aids.
It’s funny that Ikjun’s one condition ended up being sharing his perilla leaves with her. Them swapping side dishes is so oddly endearing! Do close friends do that? Maybe. Kekeke.
Tumblr media
In the other scene, my heart totally melted when Songhwa brought up Uju. Once again, their conversation is borne out of natural comfort no matter how random the topic can get. They went from talking about Uju and Mone to reminiscing about their past as interns - ONLY FOR SONGHWA TO COMFORTABLY BUST INTO A SONG IN THE MIDDLE OF NOWHERE!!!
Tumblr media
I don’t want to read too much into the choice of song Songhwa chose to sing...but...try googling Couple by Sechskies and you will realise the lyrics are very IkSong kekekeke
I laughed so hard because Ikjun’s expression was hilarious. He was embarrassed by her tone deaf singing that he sat so far, yet he waited for her uninterruptedly and even clapped for her. Friends, if there ever is anyone who would put up to your tone deaf singing like this maybe you should consider marrying them. I loved that Songhwa was also wearing his jacket. While we didn’t see how that happened, at least we got to see that Songhwa held onto the jacket right until they headed back into the hospital. I mean, that shows the level of comfort between them, right? Without her having to overthink that that gesture means something more considering everything that has happened.
Tumblr media
“This is nice,” Oh Songhwa, I just want you to be happy. You were so happy in this episode, honestly and I live to see that. If you two remain to be this happy for the rest of the episodes honestly I guess I wouldn’t mind seeing this similar rapport with or without endgame huhuhuhu (as long as you two are happy)
Anyway! I thought that, even though these two scenes were placed at quite a random timing with the most carefree of conversations, they were included in this episode for a reason.
And that reason in my opinion at least is because of that one scene between Songhwa and Seonbin:-
Tumblr media
For the first time, we are able to see a little insight of Songhwa and her past relationships. And here, she specified that it was exhausting trying to go all out in mending a relationship after having arguments with her ex-bf. Of course this screencap doesn’t encapsulate all that she said but basically I have a feeling that she is now in an ‘idle’ state with Ikjun because she believes in the principle of “what is meant to be, will be” (referencing to the line of asking Seonbin to just wait, and that if they both don’t want it to end, and if they don’t stay apart, then everything will be ok).
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Hmm :)
Tumblr media
Who called who in this episode and spent some time alone with him twice I wonder...
And finally THIS statement!!!
Tumblr media
With just this one sentence alone we are able to tell that Songhwa wants to just leave it to fate for now. To wait and see what happens. That she’ll go along with the flow and whatever that comes from it. I take this as a positive sign for us because in this episode itself we’ve gotten her slowly opening up to Ikjun and wanting to spend time with him alone. She even wore his jacket!!!
I think that she hasn’t expressed much of her feelings directly for Ikjun bc following her principle, she’s just letting nature take its course. She’s still trying to figure out her feelings for him in my opinion, without overthinking too much and just...wanting to see if her spending time with Ikjun means something more than it should.
I’m excited to see what is in store for us in future episodes because I feel that this is just the beginning for Songhwa. We got a bit of her POV here, though not in a way we want to (which is a direct hint at IkSong) but it’s good enough to know that she isn’t entirely opposing the idea, just that she’s waiting to see where life takes her next.
I hold on to the fact that regardless of their relationship status, Ikjun will always be the one to make her laugh. She clearly enjoys his company and clearly is comfortable enough to share personal topics with him. So yes, I am still holding hard onto the IkSong stocks! I fell so hard for this ship in the beginning because of the domesticity between them anyway, that natural rapport and affection they have for each other. Be it platonic or not, they are the IkSong couple we love so much because of that very reason so as long as they remain as happy like this, I think I’m good. (But, I’m not giving up yet okay! My cut off point is EP 6 honestly haha)
BONUS SCENE:
Tumblr media
What are they so cute for honestly? The way Songhwa just BURST into laughter - that was the loudest laugh ever from her. They’re so cute please have mercy, my heart is fragile adkjsakjd

[spoilers] hosplay season 2 ep 2 - ikjun/songhwa
The time has come for me to share my thoughts (not that anyone is particularly interested) on my favourite (soon to be) couple in episode 2 of hosplay 2! Notwithstanding that I am actually still recovering from my first jab of AZ vax, I just felt the need to pen down my thoughts after being crippled the entire day.
As usual, you know the drill - this post contains spoilers so if you haven’t seen episode 2, perhaps it would be best to come back after you’ve seen it!
TL;DR: Ikjun continues to be the one person who makes Songhwa laugh, adding extra happiness and value to her already happy life!
After one week of spiralling from the events of ep 1, I was pleasantly surprised to find that Ikjun and Songhwa’s dynamics have returned to how they used to be like the best friends they are before the confession/rejection ever happened. At first, it seemed rather jarring because I was expecting some awkwardness here and there - but as the episode progresses, it struck me that I’m perfectly content with this direction ShinLee has decided for IkSong. I suppose this is to show that IkSong’s core foundation of friendship is so strong that it wouldn’t waver or falter because of what happened between them. Which I guess, is pretty important for Songhwa to realise that nothing much would change between them if they ever do get together - girlie needs to stop overthinking and just follow her heart. We shall have to monitor this closely in future episodes but I still stand by what I said about Songhwa rejecting Ikjun mostly because she didn’t want to risk their friendship.
Anyway! Songhwa’s back to being comfortable with Ikjun. When she accidentally dropped the Ramyeon and caused its soup to splash onto Ikjun’s face, she was quick to forgo having first dibs of the ramyeon to hurriedly wipe Ikjun’s face.
Tumblr media
Jeongwon; same. HAHA.
Of course, this gesture may not mean anything since it’s probably just her guilty conscience speaking but it’s nice to see that Songhwa didn’t hesitate despite events that recently just happened - yes ms gobaek hajima, i’m looking at you.
Tumblr media
Girlie looking at Junwan practically inhaling the ramyeon she could have first eaten made me laugh! Ah, these two food goblins are such a joy to watch, honestly.
Moving on!
What struck me the most in this episode for our lovely pair of best friends is the fact that we saw how consistently Ikjun had been in making Songhwa laugh.
Tumblr media
While talking to Jeongwon about the DDL programme, Ikjun’s name was mentioned to which Songhwa said that “he is also busy, he had two transplant surgeries”. Right after this scene, we were shown of Ikjun, being the goofball he is, waiting in front of Songhwa’s office door just for her to look up before he started his usual playful antics.
Tumblr media
Ah, the way she gestured for him to come in, and the way her face broke into a smile. The pain relief patch hurts my heart, but her smile definitely cured it.
Tumblr media
Ikjun’s agenda of making Songhwa laugh didn’t just end there. When Songhwa told him that she was now Daddy Long Legs, his first response is to jokingly comment about how she is short. Anyone would have been offended to hear that, but not Songhwa. Jeongwon retorted saying that his gag was lame, but Songhwa, she laughed.
Jeongwon stating that “you like his jokes” is a parallel to Season 1 in the restaurant after Ikjun burned his hand on her pot kettle and made a movie reference gag which no one found amusing, except Ms Chae Songhwa.
At this point, I am absolutely certain Jeongwon knows something between them. After all that Ikjun had done for you and Gyeoul in S1, it’s time to repay that favour, Jeongwon-ah.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Ikjun notices the pain relief patches on Songhwa’s neck, and we can tell that he is concerned for her. But he doesn’t cross the line to express his worry. Songhwa told him it’s like a tattoo for her now, part of her identity - and Ikjun merely says whether or not it is a tattoo, she should take it easy. That pat on the shoulder is back! And Songhwa doesn’t seem at all uncomfortable when he patted her shoulder - in fact, she even looked behind her shoulder a bit to see him leave.
Let’s move on to another scene which made Songhwa laugh. Towards the end, Songhwa’s surgery for the violinist is a success and she was offered an interview that she turned down because Prof Chae is the Best Professor Ever.
Tumblr media
Junwan looked almost ridiculed by the fact that Ms Chae is such a selfless person to turn down that interview just because her residents couldn’t make it - but we also see Ikjun busy making something on the flyer. It’s a ‘statue’ of Songhwa, he said. And Songhwa’s reaction? She laughed.
Tumblr media
The netflix eng sub for this part is not accurate, but what Ikjun basically said is that he will make Songhwa a proper bronze statue next time. Wow, talk about boyfriend-like behaviour.
Tumblr media
Look at this couple of besties on the hospital hallway flirting right in front of Seonbin’s salad!
Other than Songhwa laughing over his little gag, she indulges in it by taking the flyer from him and even putting it against her face, going along with his joke. Ikjun casually slinging an arm around Songhwa’s shoulder and her letting him do that shows that she is absolutely comfortable with their natural display of skinship. Songhwa-ya, perhaps this is your heart trying to tell you something?
And finally, FINALLY. The highlight of this Episode for IkSong is the last scene. Moments before the flashback, we have the Violinist Mum trying to set Songhwa up on a blind date with her son.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Songhwa clearly doesn’t seem all too happy about it, based on her facial expressions. She even pursed her lips in the end, signifying discomfort. But we don’t get her answer. Instead, we got a sudden flashback to the same night where she had fallen asleep on her couch.
Tumblr media
This shot here seems to reflect someone looking in from the door and seeing her fast asleep on the couch. As the scene progresses, we realise that Songhwa has had a super tiring day from work and is now heading back to Sokcho.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
She rushes to the coffee shop to get herself a coffee before starting her journey back home, but realises that it is now closed. Songhwa looks frustrated, and her exhaustion is further seen by the way she massages her neck in the basement carpark.
She gets ready to enter her car - but wait, something catches her eyes! It is two cups of coffee on her car bonnet, and perplexed, she reaches out for them.
Tumblr media
The way she smiled and laughed after reading the note on the sleeves showed that she knew exactly who had left them on her bonnet. As if that person could read her mind and knew that she would crave for coffee before heading back to Sokcho. Once again, this person has made her laugh after a tiring day.
And of course, that person is none other than Lee Ikjun.
Tumblr media
Other than handwriting evidence from the ‘O’ and the way Jojeol strikes through the exclamation points - Songhwa’s laugh is already a huge hint that it is Ikjun who left the coffee on her bonnet. Another reason is that, it couldn’t be Seonbin who had left the coffee for her because she probably doesn’t know that Songhwa has changed her car. The only people who knew are her 4 besties!
Coffee as well, is a love language between this two. It’s a repeated element since Season 1 that drinking coffee with Songhwa is a treat Ikjun gave himself. Of course, he has had his fair share of frustrations in this episode dealing with that patient with two liver transplants who had gone back to drinking. It may not be the same day but I can imagine Ikjun buying coffee, wanting to drink it with Songhwa but found that she was fast asleep. Not wanting to wake her up by entering her office, he then decided to leave it on her car knowing she will want to drink coffee once she wakes up.
If that isn’t love, then I don’t know what it is! Ugh, these two besties really have my entire heart.
The fact that this flashback came right after the suggestion of a blind date seems deliberate to me. Shin PD’s directing once again shows a reason for this - it is to tie Songhwa’s love life together. It could also depict that Songhwa is thinking about Ikjun in her subconscious when Violinist Mom brought up her son - because timeline wise, that coffee sequence happened before the blind date scene.
I stand by what I say that Ikjun completes Songhwa in the best ways possible. There is always something that Songhwa, someone coined to be so perfect, misses every now and then. And it will always be Ikjun who would notice and fill that gap without even realising, and completely willingly too. In S1, Songhwa pretended that she didn’t need anyone to follow her to get her biopsy results, but we know that she was extremely nervous in the car. Ikjun, who seemed to know what her heart didn’t say to the rest of her friends the night before at the restaurant, shows up at the hospital after a long night of surgery. Even after that when Songhwa said that she was suddenly craving for coffee, Ikjun showed up less than a few minutes later with a coffee in his hand - wasn’t that a parallel to Ep 2 that he knew she would crave for coffee and bought it for her?
There were other instances too, like how during their sujebi date, Songhwa received a call and Ikjun knew almost at once that it was an emergency. She left in a hurry, and Ikjun reached forward to take her jacket that she left behind. It was almost as if Songhwa knew Ikjun would do that for her, which was why she didn’t bother grabbing her belongings.
Remember when they reached the hospital, and Songhwa left the car door open as she rushed out? Ikjun was the one who had to close the door after her, before proceeding to wait hours for her surgery to end just so he could fetch her back.
I don’t know about you, but Ikjun/Songhwa complete each other. And this is why this ship works. They add clear value to each other’s lives through the most mundane things ever, and there is clearly a special bond between them. If I were to be dramatic, I would almost say that they need each other. Case in point other than the abovementioned examples would be when Uju fell sick and Songhwa was there to care for him while Ikjun had to go back to the hospital. For two almost perfect individuals, they are definitely the ones to fill up the void in each other’s lives - and I absolutely live for this trope.
This post is getting too long but I can’t wait for Episode 3 to know what happens next! Slowly and steadily, without greed - IkSong, I wait for you two to be endgame <3
If you made it to the end, thank you for reading my ramblings! Till next episode!

Ikjun and His Involvement in the Daddy Long Legs Program
Hospital Playlist S2E3
Some quick thoughts on Ikjun before I go to sleep.
I was wondering why there was so much focus on the partnership between Ikjun and Baek Hyung-Do last week. The main (and only) reason Ikjun had contacted him was to discuss the DLL case (which Ikjun had undertaken as a favour for Songhwa). But the show decides to take their involvement with each other further by having Ikjun send his chief over to assist in a liver transplant in Hyung-Do’s hospital on the opposite side of the country.
What purpose did this serve? Ikjun goes as far as cashing in what was meant to be a ‘personal’ favour from his senior, for the sake of a patient’s life. As well as to support the efforts of “trailblazers” in rural areas so that patients don’t have to travel long distances for essential treatments.
Hence, the show establishes Ikjun as an inherently altruistic person, someone whose motivations for performing surgeries and taking on difficult cases lie in a desire to ultimately better people’s lives. We already know that Songhwa is this kind of person because of her clear passion for DLL, and her goal to expand the program Korea-wide and provide financial assistance to as many people as possible. When Songhwa approaches Ikjun to ask him to look at the case, we assume he does so more out of courtesy for Songhwa, than out of actual vested interest in the DLL program. But as the show takes painstaking efforts to show much Ikjun cares about helping the less fortunate and increasing equity in health HIMSELF, we see that his involvement in DLL is going to be just as self-motivated as driven by a need to support Songhwa in his endeavours.
Songhwa has typically been portrayed as the ‘philanthropic’ one after Jeongwon, making her the best, possible choice after Jeongwon to helm the DLL program. But as it becomes abundantly clear that Ikjun will be helping her out in the foreseeable future, it’s great that the show highlights that Ikjun is pretty altruistic himself, even if this wasn’t apparent at first. Which makes him a perfect addition to the DLL team, and the perfect partner for Songhwa on her future DLL operations 😌😌
