Thus passeth the Jolly Roger
(Otherwise known as Yogi Bear handing over his treasure-hunting airship from Yogi's Treasure Hunt, as in the Jolly Roger, to Peter Potamus for the same of the latter's Travelling SCUBA Par-tay)
With Peter Potamus as much as Yogi Bear and Boo-Boo looking on, a test inflation of the two hot-air balloons as were a primary propulsive force for the Jolly Roger was carried out to see if the balloons were still alright after several years in mothballs (as well as wondering if the effects of the mothballs were bound to cause damage dictating repair or, in extremis, replacement of said balloons).
Peter, at any rate, sent out his simian navigator So-So unto the inflated balloons with rigging and palm for any repair of pinhole leaks or modest tears during the balloon check, especially such which could see hot air leaking outward.
You can guess what the reaction was bound to be once the balloons were mounted and fully inflated ... which was hardly to be, as So-So was at the ready patching several modest pinhole leaks ensuing (for which blame the storage in mothballs) while on the inflated balloons. Once deflated:
"Uh, Yogi--" asked Peter Potamus once the deflation was out of the way.
"What exactly was up your alley, Peter?"
"Do you think I could stay around a few days against the likelihood of getting some airworthiness tests out of the way for your balloon, the better to see if I can manage such?"
"I wouldn't mind at all, Peter Potamus!"
It may have been delayed a few days because of rain and fog, but not long afterward, allowing for discussions with Peter Potamus and members of his diving troupe back at their motel several miles down the road about whether they would actually prefer a vessel such as the former Jolly Roger as the Travelling SCUBA Par-tay's bivouac, there would begin a series of several test flights of the new craft.
The first few likely had only Peter and So-So for purposes of evaluating handling and performance, especially so with the balloons inflated and running at full sail. At any rate, much in the way of due care and skill had to be exercised, as taking on an airship modelled on a pirate galleon was quite a step up from the Magic Balloon, even considering its origins as Beany and Cecil's Leakin' Lena by way of his late, and somewhat eccentric, father Perry. Save for a rather shaky and turbulent encounter with a crosswind, which only saw minor shaking, the test flights passed without a hitch.
The next such, of course, having to be with members of the Travelling SCUBA Par-tay to see if such could handle a crew as well as it did Yogi and Boo-Boo, Hucklebrry Hound, Augie Doggie and Doggie Daddy, Quick Draw McGraw and Babalooie and Snagglepuss earlier--itself a Necessary Evil to see if the added weight of the divers and dive gear would pose issues in and of themselves. You'll surely want to stay tuned (or is that "tooned?", as Snagglepuss would have parsed it) to see what emerges....

So Huckleberry Hound joins Peter Potamus in some diving at the latter's secret atoll somewhere in Polynesia Uncharted ...
And at any rate, the experience of getting there by way of the legendary Magic Balloon (formerly known as the Leakin' Lena of Beany and Cecil infamy, know) is much the stuff of lore among many as have had the privilege, the opportunity even (and my apologies for channelling Snagglepuss there). Especially considering that Peter Potamus was able to manage his skirting an emerging cyclone somewhere between Hawai'i and French Polynesia, somehow enhancing the journey speed in its own way.
And when you stop and think about it, the "awww, shucks" simplicity of Huckleberry Hound and the adventurously eccentic Peter Potamus couldn't have managed to dovetail rather well.
But it did.
Especially considering where that atoll Peter's fond of taking especially close Funtastics for some diving adventure remains a closely-guarded and at once unmapped location, even when you have an especially spectacular stretch of uncharted coral reef not just in the atoll itself, but surrounding the edges of same. Reefs which even Huckleberry Hound couldn't resist diving in at least twice, especially wearing just himself (which was rather natural in the circumstances, come to think of it--as well as attracting dolphins to our diving compadres for some of the purest and most fascinating dolphin swims known).
And let's not forget another of those sensations Peter Potamus is fond of throwing for his diving guests: Setting up hammocks just inside the shallows of the main beach, letting the incoming tides be a sleep-inducing attraction, such as Huckleberry Hound appreciated (even if, during a dinner of fish spear-caught by Peter Potamus earlier, Huckleberry noted a fondness of sleeping on the front porch of his house back home in certain weather conditions).
There was certainly nothing, believe you me, which Huckleberry Hound could pass up during such a diver's holiday as this with Peter Potamus.

From Leakin' Lena to Magic Balloon: An unlikely saga (with apologies to as much Bob Clampett as Hanna-Barbera) (part 3)
So the conversion begins
It may have taken a day or two for Perry Potamus to make quite the drive with his new pet and pride, the former Leakin' Lena, about to begin conversion into his Magic Balloon ... and though it may take some time back at his quarters to locate the specific details as to the whole notion, and the processes involved, at least he had a basic idea in foci some weeks back in discussing the idea to close kith and kin over a diving party.
And it would turn out that quite a few such friends would turn out to assist in the effort, starting with the removal of the mainmast and sail and encompassing the installation and fitting of the relevant gear as would facilitate the hot-air balloon component, which could also include use of helium gas as required (especially on longer journeys where the hot-air such would be impractical) ... remodelling of the Captain's Quarters into a somewhat humble such, right down to a Sterno stove and a fold-up bed ... making provision for such cargo as Perry might find on such journeys as he would have in mind ... and a closet for the safari jackets he's fond of wearing.
And let's not forget the superstructure being rebuilt so that such could do well in the air as much as in the open seas, including the scraping off of barnacles and other accumulated sea creatures, stripping the paint and varnish off....
And when it was all over, it was time for the first test flight.
After getting everything ready, and hoping the neighbours wouldn't be too stunned, Perry Potamus lifted off in the just-after-sunrise hours of a rather clement Southern California morning to make sure such went off fine and well. Thankfully, the dreaded marine layer had burned off some, and you could say the impression fathomed by Perry Potamus was one of sheer confidence and satisfaction in having his dream fulfilled at last, sensing a different perspective from the air in what heretofore had been a rather fatuous sailboat as saw its share of adventure upon islands and atolls whose names were a little on the suggestive side.
The landing at "home base" may have been a little on the rough side, what with having to navigate power and cable-television lines just to reach the same ... yet you could tell Perry Potamus was rather delighted at how all came out.
Next up (as in next time around): To Catalina and back, with a test of the maritine component--and some interesting company as well.

Moth Mondays with the Funtastic World of Hanna-Barbera:
Lippy the Lion “himself”
Talk about maintaining the bond with a close buddy of his, otherwise known as the myopic Hardy Har-Har the hyena. One unlikely reaffirmation of that bond came about as thus:
It was a couple winters ago, during a dive session which Peter Potamus invited us on off the Florida Keys. In a rather remote section which happened to have some rather interesting coral reefs and playful marine life, dolphins in particular.
And it was during an off moment when we decided to do a little SCUBA into the reef we were above ... I tapped the shoulder of my close companion, otherwise known as Hardy Har-Har, who’s a somewhat myopic hyena, who was lounging about on Peter’s dive boat (which, thankfully, was no Leakin’ Lena) taking it easy in the sun.
“Uh--Hardy?” I purred gently into Hardy’s ear.
“What exactly is it now?”
“Maybe it was time we did some--”
“Diving? Oh me ... oh myyyy ... who’d want to go on another potentially dangerous dive at this time of the day?”
“Partially true, Hardy.”
“What else did you have in mind, Lippy?”
“We’d like to ... reaffirm our friendship.”
“On THIS particular dive?”
Well, at any rate, you can bet Hardy managed to play along, and about as fast as you could whistle our theme song from back in the day, we got into our dive getup ... and I must acknowledge that as we were getting fitted for our getup, we could certainly sense some rather silly feelings going through our loins. Such can get to be a thing with us, among a few others in Peter’s diving company, but we try not to let it interfere too much. And after the final check, out on the dive deck for the backflip entry ...
And who could believe what the sun-dappled coral reef was like that early in the morning, the sheer warmth of the near-tropical waters of the Keys was certainly the sort of thing you could look forward to ... especially when you could get rather close to the reef and just sense its grandeur underwater. Hardy, admittedly, also managed to find some wonder in the morning coral reef.
But the main reason for this dive, you see ... we needed to reaffirm our bond.
Diving out to about 30 feet below the surface, close to the edge of this particular reef, I just sensed what the diving experience can feel like when you’re basically wearing just yourself for the most part, which, for some reason, can feel rather wonderful in its own way. Enough to summon Hardy by hand signals to come close to me, as if but for a few moments of intimate magic. I stretched out my hands to Hardy’s as we were both prone, well close to the reef, and we went into a rather wonderful show known as “handfasting”. Whch is basically clutching your hands, arms outstretched, for a few moments as a show of affirmation and trust--and was seen as good as marriage in some societies until fairly recent times.
But it happened that the handfasting display underwater was but a prelude to something essentially deeper and closer: Through simple gestures, Hardy and I moved a little closer to each other, pressing close to our chests even as the mouthpieces remained clenched in our jaws ... and as we pressed our furry bodies together, even locking our legs together ... we could sense something most magical was about to ensue as “those feelings” came forth so magically and so close as we were. It was but for a few moments in the deep of the Florida Keys, but in such embrace as we had, there was an underwater magic like you couldn’t believe, realising that Lippy the Lion and Hardy Har Har were expected to be close companions--and I MEAN seriously close companions.
Yet, when we got back on the boat ... things seemed to develop as if they didn’t actually happen to begin with. And you wonder, even in the ecstacy of a dive such as this, how wonderful such a friendship as ours could get reaffirmed in so wonderful a way as it was.
Which even surprised Peter Potamus, our dive host, when he noticed just how contented we seemed to be on the deck.

There will now be a short holiday hiatus
In deference to the Christmas holidays, It's So Hanna-Barberaesque will now take a short holiday break for the Christmas long weekend ... to be followed over the inter-holiday week leading to New Year's with a special fanfic series entitled "From Leakin' Lena to Magic Balloon," explaining the heretofore-secret origins of what became the Magic Balloon of Peter Potamus. You're sure to not want to so miss.
In the interim, Your Humble Narrator wishes you and yours a happy holiday season, irrespective of what or how you celebrate at this time of year. And, hopefully, that such will be in moderation.
