A merman?! Yup! It has been ages since I’ve drawn a guy.

This illustration was really fun, it started in a totally different direction but once I had the lightbulb moment to draw my favourite seahorse (The Leafy Seadragon) it all started coming together. Leafy Seadragons live off the Australian coast so of course I had to go with a dashing Indigenous Australian man as the human-inspiration.

Finally finished drawing the merprinces for my story.

Their appearances are based on the description of what the princesses from the little mermaid (hans christian andersen version) saw when they first went to the surface

Also, yes , they all have the same parents. Mer biology just works different from humans in this universe.

Mermay Day 14: Leafy Sea Dragon

There's something quite breathtaking about the similarities between Merms and other humanoids. I've been observing Montan for the entirety of the breeding season, and I see so much of myself in him, in how he cares for his first clutch. He's known me for years, and yet he would barely let me get close enough to observe the little ones. He cares very much for his hatchlings. It makes me think of my own daughter, sometimes.

Here's the last doodle page I did which has turned into a try and figure out what mer blue moon would look like. There is a course a part of me that wants it to be very similar to how I drew my mers in safe waves. But seeing the results I might try something more similar to @artoutoftheblue's mer style. Right now just trying to figure out how to merge a leafy dragon with a ribbon eel. I don't think it's working. Or at least he looks way creepier than he should.

(Another late Mer-remnant, this time it's Funtime Freddy! He's a bit shyer than others, so i thought a leafy sea dragon would make sense, considering they like to blend into kelp and whatnot. I also chose this to match with Funtime Foxy's mer form, since Funtime Freddy would want to match with his best friend.)

The Blue Ringed Octopus is deadly but cute. If you ever see one do NOT touch no matter how tantalizing they may be.

The Leafy Sea Dragon is my favorite ocean creature after the Manta Ray. I love how she came out. I was so worried about it
