As Colombo demonstrates in the article below, the soldier was almost certainly Simeone Silci, a 33-year-old man from Borsano who was drafted into the 19th Infantry Regiment, into which Private Ungaretti had enlisted as a volunteer. “Veglia” takes its inspiration from this grisly experience, a prolonged close encounter with death that is nevertheless transmuted by the poet into a tenacious celebration of life.Īs a result of my creation of a comics adaptation of an English translation of “Veglia” by Marco Sonzogni and Ross Woods of the New Zealand Centre for Literary Translation, I was recently contacted by Mario Colombo, a native of Borsano (Busto Arsizio) in Northern Italy, who, after much in-depth investigation, believes he has discovered the identity of the dead soldier next to whom Ungaretti held his macabre vigil.

The 27-year-old poet had spent the previous night in a trench atop Monte San Michele (near the present-day Italian-Slovenian border), under a full moon, next to the body of a recently killed comrade. One hundred years ago today, on the 23rd of December, 1915, Giuseppe Ungaretti wrote what would become one of the most famous Italian poems of the First World War, the very short but infinitely moving “Veglia” (“Vigil”).

“As you know I’m not used to recommend records, but this new 10" lathe cut is a must-have. It’s the only recording by MAGIC BAND OF GYPSYS (Joëlle Vinciarelli, Henri Roger and Philippe “@merzbo_derek ” Robert), coming from a extravaganza-night in Côte d'Azur back in 2004. Despite its originality, all influences/ references mentioned are fully apt… I’d just add two magnum opus from the 20th Century: “Strange Strings” and “Vexations” . Needless to say, the 24 copies of the lathe went sold out in 1 minute, but more and more I do believe very few people deserve real art these days. “Il est long le chemin qui mène à MBOG. A faire à rebours, en plus, puisque le disque en question – le lathe cut en question, nous en parlerons plus bas – délivre un enregistrement de 2004, live at Corne d’Or, Côte d’Azur. « C’était beau, il faisait beau, et j’en ai rapporté une vilaine chanson », disait jadis Léo Ferré… La chanson est celle d’un trio : Joëlle Vinciarelli, Henri Roger et Philippe Robert. Les musiciens (ou capables de sons d’intérêt pour reprendre le Steve Lacy cité au dos du disque) batifolent sur deux faces, celles du lathe cut annoncé. L’Urban Dictionary explique : Lathe Cut is a dubplate where the sound is cut directly into a blank vinyl disc instead of acetate. Il y a donc peu d’exemplaires (24, ici) mais déjà tous partis (24, partis donc). Alors souvenons-nous : des grands coups que le trio donne de la voix ou au piano ou à la batterie, des mélodies mortes déjà à peine entendues, des râles de cordes grattées ou agacées seulement, d’instruments épuisés jusqu’à la corde (voix / piano encore), de rengaines extraites de quel corps singulier. Entre deux graves, le trio traîne justement ce corps et en fait un autre, qu’importe l’instrument. Dans Agitation Friite, Roger confiait à Robert : « Sur plusieurs instruments, des manières différentes de s’exprimer se révèlent ; des idées viennent à la guitare, à reprendre au piano ou l’inverse, de même que des rythmes prenant forme à la batterie s’avèrent finalement transposables sur guitare ou piano. » Il est court le chemin qui mène à hier quand aujourd’hui tout se confond. Du trio d’hier à Agitation Friite, c’est le serpent qui se mord la queue, me dira-t-on. Oui mais le serpent t’emmerde. Le serpent fait ce qu’il veut. HOW TO TRAIN YOUR DRAGON - THE HIDDEN WORLD (2019) Attendu comme le messie depuis l’hallucinant et magistral HOW TO TRAIN YOUR DRAGON 2 (2014), qui confirmait que DREAMWORKS tenait là une saga solide, originale et innovante, doublée d’une vitrine graphique monstrueuse en termes de CGI: vu à sa sortie au Cinéma en 3D, le film était clairement un colosse technique au champ de profondeur et aux reliefs inégalés, qui nous emportait dans un tourbillon de fantasy magique... Si HOW TO TRAIN YOUR DRAGON (2010), simplement beau et sympathique, instaurait le background Viking-Dragonnier, le réalisateur canadien Dean Deblois -à qui l’on doit cette trilogie, mais aussi un certain LILO AND STITCH (2002) de DISNEY- persévère sur sa lancée, bénéficiant ainsi de deux films et d’une série éponyme en six saisons faisant le lien entre le second opus et THE HIDDEN WORLD: un univers étoffé, qui s’embellit avec le temps, et dont le récit grandit, tout comme la narration. Lui-même animateur, on aurait pu penser que Dean DeBlois se serait planté dans son parcours, d’une part à cause de la concurrence, car il est ardu de s’imposer en animation 3D face à DISNEY ou SONY, et d’une autre de par son métier, le talent risquant d’engloutir l’histoire: HOW TO TRAIN YOUR DRAGON 2 avait prouvé qu’on pouvait faire des films épiques et magnifiques à partir d’une bonne base, intelligemment mis en scène, et portant pléthore d’émotions -un fossé qualitatif général le sépare du premier, c’est certain!-. Aujourd’hui, THE HIDDEN WORLD ne peut être considéré comme une simple suite, comme un simple épisode 3 de commande pour conclure l’aventure: mieux, on pensait être prêts après que DREAMWORKS nous ait surpris en 2014, mais c’est impossible. Comprenez que THE HIDDEN WORLD s’impose instantanément en référence: le chara-design “cartoonesque” lisse vous dérange? DREAMWORKS s’attelle à la tâche, conservant le look mais le magnifiant via pléthore de détails superbes: textures, pilosité, reliefs, modélisation, particules, effets de mouvement, fluidité d’animation, lumières, synchro labiale, putain de merde, ils ont réussi à rendre l’aspect “dessin animé” du film PHOTORÉALISTE! De plus, THE HIDDEN WORLD ne répète pas à l’envi le gigantisme de HOW TO TRAIN YOUR DRAGON 2: l’écriture du long-métrage est d’une subtilité épatante, à l’image de ce fameux monde caché -un Eden draconique au-delà de vos rêves esthétiques les plus fous- qui sera bien au centre du film, mais qu’on ne verra que brièvement. Ne râlez pas, au contraire: le but étant de préserver ce havre de paix paradisiaque loin de la cupidité de l’Homme... cette dernière étant illustrée par l’arrivée du sombre et cruel -pour ne pas dire “enculé d’sa race” Grimmel The Grisly, chasseur de Dragons de son état, bien motivé à éradiquer les reptiles chracheurs de feu définitivement. Avec sa gueule à la Christopher Walken, le bad-guy vêtu de cuir est charismatique, assez pour qu’on s’en souvienne malgré qu’il n’arrive dans les HOW TO TRAIN YOUR DRAGON que très tard: haïssable, il s’imposera en ennemi direct de Hiccup -Harold, si vous préférez-, devenu comme ses amis un adulte, chef de son immense tribu. Une évolution appréciable, qui nous montre ces personnages attachants sous un nouveau jour, certains arborant une belle barbe en lieu et place d’un visage juvénile: le temps a passé, plus d’un an à peine dans la timeline si l’on en croit maman Hiccup, et comment se fait-il alors que le “monde caché” ne soit mentionné que maintenant? Encore une trouvaille scénaristique de taille puisque d’intimistes flash-backs inédits vibrants de nostalgie -ah, Stoick, tu nous manques!-relatifs à l’enfance de Hiccup lui feront reconsidérer l’existence de ce vieux mythe oublié: devant fuir pour éviter la menace du machiavélique Grimmel, la perspective d’atteindre l’endroit en question va devenir un objectif. Et si seulement ça s’arrêtait là! THE HIDDEN WORLD va constamment se reconsidérer, réfléchir, twister, et nous faire VOYAGER aux confins de ce monde: est-il possible de sauver ces milliers de dragons? Est-il possible de quitter Beurk, pour le reconstruire ailleurs? Hiccup parviendra-t-il à ignorer les critiques sur sa voix de canard, son physique, son handicap, et son manque de confiance en soi pour conserver sa position de chef? Et qui est cette jolie Night Fury immaculée, faisant tourner la tête de Toothless, roi des Dragons? Y’en a pour des heures à en parler, et sans se lasser: la musique de John Powell va déclencher des torrents de larmes qui ne demandaient qu’à sortir, TANT C’EST BEAU, ou pire, avec cette fin qui noue la gorge, et cet épilogue portant au plus haut l’amitié indestructible de Hiccup et Toothpaste, et élevant la saga à un niveau d’excellence rarissime. Si l’OST d’AQUAMAN (2019) était mortelle, celle de THE HIDDEN WORLD laisse John Powell user de son art pour nous tirer des larmes aux moments opportuns -l’arrivée dans le monde caché, le final-. Inutile de vous ennuyer plus avec cette review, sachez juste que THE HIDDEN WORLD est l’opus le plus abouti de la trilogie, le meilleur film de fantasy en CGI de l’année, le plus beau film d’animation en 3D du moment, une démonstration technique renversante, et une histoire qui se grave à jamais dans nos cœurs et notre mémoire. Si le Cinéma était une ouvrage religieux, Dean DeBlois en serait un Dieu, DREAMWORKS son équipe d’Anges, et THE HIDDEN WORLD un don du Ciel. S’achevant sur une poétique interprétation du monde caché affiliée à l’activité volcanique, THE HIDDEN WORLD nous fait même croire que tout cela a existé, avec une poésie délicieuse. Anthony Davis et Jason Robinson, Cerulean Landscape par Pierre Lemarchand (Le Son du Grisli).

Tels John Coltrane (Blue Train, Coltrane Plays the Blues), Booker Ervin (Blues Book),Thelonious Monk (Blue Monk) ou encore bien sûr Miles Davis (Kind of Blue), nombreux furent ceux qui replongèrent le jazz dans sa teinture originelle : le blues. Et c’est Duke Ellington qui inspire à Jason Robinson et Anthony Davis la musique jouée ici. Le fameux pianiste avait en son temps exploré les nombreuses nuances de la couleur bleue (Mood Indigo, Azure, Transbluesency…). Avec Cerulean Landscape (« paysage céruléen »), les deux hommes de poursuivre la démarche de leur aîné et de plonger à leur tour leurs mains dans le profond courant bleu. Le saxophoniste et flûtiste Jason Robinson et le pianiste Anthony Davis commencèrent à jouer ensemble en 1998, à l’occasion d’un hommage rendu à Cecil Taylor. C’est dire si les deux extrêmes de ce spectre (Cecil Taylor alors ; Duke Ellington aujourd’hui) suggèrent un attachement à la tradition nuancé d’une poursuite opiniâtre de la liberté. Le disque s’ouvre avec une composition de Davis, Shimmer, lent envol vers de vibrantes altitudes. Les battements d’ailes du piano puis les circonvolutions du saxophone posent le décor de Cerulean Lansdcape : la musique alternera longues pauses planantes et virages épris d’accélérations et changements de rythmes. On pense dans ce premier morceau àSteve Lacy, tant le saxophone soprano ici mêle en un même flux tendresse et abstraction, chair et esprit. Sur le titre suivant, Someday I’ll Know, le saxophone ténor prend le relai. C’en est fait de la légèreté, le propos s’aggrave, s’approfondit, et à mesure que la musique progresse l’on semble se rapprocher du sol pour enfin se poser à mi temps du morceau, un court instant. Puis, sous l’impulsion de Davis, en un solo stupéfiant, redécoller et jouer malicieusement avec le vent. Le disque s’écoutera alors à l’aune de ces débuts : aux grands espaces succéderont d’accidentés terrains, où les notes se fraieront un passage avec agilité et inquiétude. Quitter les hauteurs ne se fait parfois pas sans risques et Vicissitudes, seul véritable bémol du disque, ne fait qu’accroître notre impatience de voir les musiciens reprendre calme et hauteur. C’est chose faite dès le quatrième (et plus beau ?) morceau, Of Blues and Dreams. La paix retrouvée se teinte cependant de ces notes bleues qui interdisent tout abandon, qui rappellent l’imminence possible de la chute. Alors, l’art du suspense de Davis et Robinsonachèvera de convaincre. Cet autre sommet du disque qu’est Andrew (septième et pénultième morceau), au piano tout en brisures mais ne se départissant jamais d’un implacable rythme, nous offrira une proposition singulière de ce qui faisait battre le cœur de la musique de Duke : le swing. http://grisli.canalblog.com/archives/2011/01/24/20204540.html
