putting the poll up early so i can go ahead and jump into the next book when i finish this one.
if any book(s) other than the winning choice gets notable support i'll mark it down for after the winning book
synopsis under the cut
prose and cons by amanda flower
Magic, books, and cats collide in a village near Niagara Falls in the latest Magical Bookshop Mystery from the author of Crime and Poetry.  In Cascade Springs, New York, Violet Waverly and her grandma, Daisy, are the proprietors of Charming Books, where the power of the written word is positively enchanting...  October in Cascade Springs means tourists are pouring in for the annual Food and Wine Festival, and Daisy hopes to draw those crowds to the store. She asks Violet and the local writing group, the Red Inkers, to give a reading of the works of Edgar Allan Poe in the shop’s back garden to entertain the revelers. Everyone eagerly agrees.  Yet their enthusiasm is soon extinguished when Violet discovers one of the writers dead during the event. After the shop magically tells Violet she’ll need to rely on Poe’s works to solve the murder, she enlists the help of her trusty tuxedo cat, Emerson, and the shop’s crow, Faulkner. But they must act fast before someone else’s heart beats nevermore...
(this is a sequel but cozies are generally pretty standalone & i'll give you a recap of the first book)
pearl by josh malerman (previously published as on this, the day of the pig)
From Josh Malerman, the New York Times bestselling author of Bird Box and Malorie, comes the legend of Pearl, a strange new monster unlike any other in horror (previously published as On This, the Day of the Pig). NAMED ONE OF THE BEST BOOKS OF THE YEAR BY THE WALL STREET JOURNAL • “Daring readers should find this tale of a malevolent telepathic pig to be a memorable experience.”—Booklist (starred review) There’s something strange about Walter Kopple’s farm. At first it seems to be his grandson, who cruelly murders one of Walter’s pigs in an act of seemingly senseless violence. But then people in town begin to whisper that Walter’s grandson heard a voice commanding him to kill. And that the voice belongs to a most peculiar creature: the pig named Pearl. Walter is not sure what to believe. He knows he’s always been afraid of the strangely malevolent Pearl. But as madness and paranoia grip the town and the townspeople descend on Walter’s farm with violent wrath, they begin to discover that true evil wears a human face.
the murder wheel by tom mead
In London, 1938, young and idealistic lawyer Edmund Ibbs is trying to find any shred of evidence that his client Carla Dean wasn’t the one who shot her husband dead at the top of a Ferris Wheel. But the deeper he digs, the more complex the case becomes, and Edmund soon finds himself drawn into a nightmarish web of conspiracy and murder. Before long he himself is implicated in not one but two seemingly impossible crimes. First, a corpse appears out of thin air during a performance by famed illusionist “Professor Paolini” in front of a packed auditorium at the Pomegranate Theatre. Then a second victim is shot dead in a locked dressing room along one of the theatre’s winding backstage corridors. Edmund is in exactly the wrong place at the wrong time, and attracts the suspicion of Scotland Yard inspector George Flint. Luckily, conjuror-turned-detective Joseph Spector is on the scene. Only Spector’s uniquely logical perspective can pierce the veil of deceit in a world of illusion and misdirection, where seeing is not always believing. Tom Mead continues to pay homage to the locked room mysteries of the Golden Age in this second Joseph Spector novel.
(another sequel, but again mysteries can generally stand alone & i'll recap book 1)
grave witch by kalayna price
Grave witch Alex Craft can speak to the dead, but that doesn’t mean she likes what they have to say. As a private investigator and consultant for the police, Alex Craft has seen a lot of dark magic. But even though she’s on good terms with Death himself—who happens to look fantastic in a pair of jeans—nothing has prepared her for her latest case. Alex is investigating a high profile murder when she’s attacked by the ‘shade’ she’s raising, which should be impossible. To top off her day, someone makes a serious attempt on her life, but Death saves her. Guess he likes having her around... To solve this case Alex will have to team up with tough homicide detective Falin Andrews. Falin seems to be hiding something—though it’s certainly not his dislike of Alex—but Alex knows she needs his help to navigate the tangled webs of mortal and paranormal politics, and to track down a killer wielding a magic so malevolent, it may cost Alex her life...and her soul.

it's world whale day and i want to talk about a whale near and dear to my heart: Kiska the orca.
She is Canada's last remaining killer whale in captivity. She is alone at Marineland Canada. Orcas are highly social animals who live in pods made up of family members. Kiska has been alone for over a decade since her last tank mate was returned to SeaWorld.
She was captured in the North Atlantic at about 3 years old and has lived in captivity for ~40 years. All 5 of her offspring have died.
As of 2019, Canada passed the Ending the Captivity of Whales and Dolphins Act which effectively put an end to the use of cetaceans by the entertainment industry. However, Kiska and her beluga whale neighbours still remain at Marineland Canada.
In 2021, Niagara Regional Police brought forth criminal charges against Marineland Canada for violating federal law by hosting dolphin shows over the summer of 2021. A year later, the charges were stayed, however.
As of 2023, a lawyer representing Marineland Canada has lobbied the Ontario Ministry of of Tourism, Culture and Sport with the intent to sell Marineland Canada. It's uncertain what the future holds for Kiska should Marineland be sold.
edit: I updated the post because I said her former tank mate passed away when Ikaika was actually returned to SeaWorld. my apologies.

Title: And the Birds of All Your Teacups Sing Fandom: Wonderfalls Song: "Brave" by The Innocence Mission Summary: Jaye surrenders to destiny. It just takes her a while. A long while.
Created in 2011. Now on a functional streaming site.
Wonderfalls was the second series Bryan Fuller created, after Dead Like Me but before Pushing Daisies. It lasted only four episodes on Fox, but the first season came out as a DVD set. A disaffected Ivy league grad, Jaye, works retail in Niagara Falls. One day, objects start talking to her. They don't leave her alone until, after many Rube Goldbergian convolutions, she helps the character of the week in need, often in ways no one would have ever guessed they needed.
Think Reality Bites meets Big Fish, and you're in the right ballpark. It's very Pushing Daisies like (it even has Lee Pace!), but less twee. Jaye's relationships with her siblings are my favorite part; her perennial student brother (Pace) is working on a PhD in religion and thinks God and/or the Devil are talking to Jaye. Her closeted lesbian, lawyer sister is just FUN.
It is my firm belief that Jaye is now the successful author of a webcomic about the homoerotic adventures of a wax lion and a brass monkey. Serves them right.

What do you consider the biggest challenge in writing?
thanks for asking, i appreciate it.
prolly myself. i don't know how evident this was before i nuked auuteur, but english has never been my forte, and i don't have an education in literature. i had private reasons to keep on writing so that i would be quicker with my command of language. i guarantee they were not disgusting reasons. i got to the consistent point where i could do what i wanted to do like second nature.
cringe-rusty now.
what does your URL mean, and why did you choose it?
my expression; north korea runs out of food. brad pitt runs outta cash
how did you come across the roleplay community?
surfing tumblr one day, probably. i used to run a blog with over 20k followers including npr and iirc even some really fucking cool indie bands.
interesting story, that blog got threatened by a v bitchy copyright lawyer from texas, who mistakenly thought i'd pulled an original photo of hers without listing her as a source. tumblr wrongly removed it even though hard evidence was there for anyone with common sense to see that it wasn't true. she immediately accused me of having taken her photo because the day i posted (the blog runs on a 3 week queue), someone from canada downloaded her image.
i have never set foot in canada. but i've just recently heard from ppl who came back from niagara falls adventure. the... dream of a very hardworking person in their 50s that had just actualised.
so. anyway. she was threatening to sue.... the details are not worth the mention now but a couple of years later when i googled her, she'd done the same thing to someone else online.
what lesson did you take away from this?
what age range do you most enjoy playing?
all are fine. and btw, i would have written sprite from the eternals as a mature adult, in her child frame. yes. but yeknow, tumblr, too grey an area and in fact subjectively more black than white.

6, 15 and 20 for the asks?
6. Create your own challenge
I thought of this one while conceptualizan my ROTI rewrite. Competitors are put into pairs and have to work together to solve a two person obstacle course and puzzle. Think something like the “It Takes Two” video game. If the challenge is done pre-merge the pair that completes the course first or in the least time wins for their team, If the challenge it done post-merge it’d the first pair both win invincibility (like in Niagara Brawls)
15. Who would you join an alliance with?
Ignoring the fact that if I was in TD I’d be such an early boot, probably Courtney, she always gets far in the show with the only exception being when Harold literally rigged the votes, and she’s very good at the game, plus she’s got good lawyers and I would definitely need that.
20. Is there another show you’d like to see crossover
Probably a basic answer but 6Teen, we watched the hell out of that show and is one of the reasons why I even got into TD in the first place. The two shows are already set in the same universe anyways so I could totally see it working out.

An Oneida Nation man purchases tobacco in the US—also from an Indigenous nation, the Seneca—and has it confiscated as he returns to Niagara Falls, Ontario, because he hasn't paid a duty tax on it (a tax of almost twice the value of the tobacco)
I won't lie: I started reading this with a bit of a smirk on my face, because growing up as a working class New Englander, I know the type of people who would travel great distances for discount cartons of cigarettes. But the 1794 Jay Treaty is invoked—and this is still very much a thing, the US embassy in Canada explains how it affects Indigenous people to this day—meanwhile Canadian border services argue that no, actually, the War of 1812 abrogated the Jay Treaty?! How is this not settled 207 years after the Treaty of Ghent?
I'm just. My head is spinning over the long, long shadow of the War of 1812, but also the old observation that while "who won the War of 1812" is debatable, who lost the War of 1812 is clear: Indigenous nations, whether they allied with the British Empire or the US, and the many Black veterans who faced discrimination and hardship (and even enslavement despite their military service).
A lawyer from Couchiching First Nation comments on the Jay Treaty being ignored, and ongoing reconciliation efforts (not going so well).

World leaders, spies and mafia dons: Who’s who in Boris Birshtein’s world
Back in the 1990s, Boris Birshtein introduced some Canadian businessmen to Vladimir Putin, then the deputy mayor of St. Petersburg. Almost a quarter-century later, Mr. Birshtein’s son-in-law, Alex Shnaider, became the business partner of Donald Trump on a downtown Toronto hotel.
In between, Mr. Birshtein met with a checkered cast of world leaders, spies and mafia dons.
The question that lingers, even now: Who, besides himself, did Mr. Birshtein represent at those meetings? Was he an asset of the KGB and its successor agency, the FSB, as diplomats I spoke to were convinced? Was he associated with the Russian mafia, as police forces in Canada, the United States and Europe believed? Or was he more of a Forrest Gump character, just a businessman with incredible luck and timing?
Here’s a short list of some of the connections Mr. Birshtein developed during his long career in the shadows of international events.
Seabeco: Boris Birshtein’s company, and the centre of his network. Though it exists only on paper now, Seabeco made a reported US$500-million a year in the 1990s. It did so primarily by buying up raw materials produced in the former USSR, and then selling them abroad at inflated prices. Mr. Birshtein and Seabeco also played guide and partner to big Canadian firms – including Molson, Gillette and Magna International – as they entered the ex-Soviet market.
Vladimir Putin: A Winnipeg firm hoping to build a hotel in St. Petersburg in the early 1990s was told it needed to work with Seabeco. When construction of the hotel came to a halt due to a shortage of gravel, Mr. Birshtein introduced the Canadians to the deputy mayor of the city – a young Vladimir Putin – who solved the crisis. Mr. Putin, a former KGB agent, later travelled to Canada on an under-the-radar trip that saw him visit Winnipeg, Ottawa, Toronto and Niagara Falls.
Boris Yeltsin: In his memoirs, Russia’s first president describes being tricked into meeting Mr. Birshtein by his own security minister. The president and the businessman didn’t get along, and Mr. Yeltsin later accused Mr. Birshtein of providing financial support to a failed 1993 bid to oust him from power. Nearly 200 people were killed after Mr. Yeltsin deployed the army to end the uprising.
Tumblr media
Alex Shnaider: Mr. Birshtein’s son-in-law and a former Seabeco employee. Mr. Shnaider became a billionaire largely via a series of deals in eastern Ukraine that occurred while Mr. Birshtein wielded wide influence over the government of president Leonid Kuchma. Later, Mr. Shnaider emerged as Donald Trump’s business partner at the Trump International Hotel and Tower in Toronto. Mr. Shnaider, who is now divorced from Mr. Birshtein’s daughter, says his former father-in-law played no role in his success.
Midland Resources: A company co-owned by Mr. Shnaider, and that often seemed to co-operate with the Russian state. A series of transactions saw Midland acquire a steel mill in eastern Ukraine for a reported US$70-million in 2000, then sell it a decade later for US$850-million to a group of shell companies controlled by Russia’s state-owned VEB bank (which was then chaired by Mr. Putin). Mr. Shnaider’s lawyer said some of the money from the mill sale helped finance the construction of Trump Toronto, though he later tried to retract the remark.
The Central Asians: Mr. Shnaider isn’t the only ex-Seabeco employee who wound up as a business partner of Donald Trump. Two of Kazakhstan’s most powerful businessmen, Patokh Chodiev and Alexander Mashkevich, met while working for Seabeco’s Belgium office. Mr. Chodiev and Mr. Mashkevich are connected to Mr. Trump by way of their investment in the Bayrock Group, which led the construction of Trump SoHo in New York and fronted the unsuccessful push for a Trump tower in Moscow.
Semion Mogilevich: Seen as the most powerful figure in Russian organized crime. A leaked FBI report suggests that Mr. Mogilevich attended a summit of Russian mafia bosses hosted in an office Mr. Birshtein kept in Tel Aviv, and at which Mr. Birshtein was present.
Sergei Mikhailov: The head of the notorious Solntsevskaya mafia, Mr. Mikhailov also attended the Tel Aviv summit. Mr. Birshtein’s son, Alon, says he met Mr. Mikhailov at his family home while the Birshteins were living in Switzerland.
Dmitry Yakubovski: An alleged KGB officer who worked for Seabeco in Canada, Mr. Yakubovski fell on the opposite side of Mr. Birshtein in the 1993 effort to oust Boris Yeltsin from power. Amid the fighting in Moscow, three shots were fired into Mr. Yakubovski’s house on Toronto’s Bridle Path. Mr. Yakubovski, now a lawyer in Moscow, left the country soon afterward.

It takes a special kind of coward to run from justice while letting your mother rot in a jail cell on a charge related to a murder that police say you committed. But that’s what police say has transpired in the troubling case of 21-year-old Pawanpreet Kaur, who was shot to death on Dec. 3, 2022, outside of a Mississauga Petro-Canada gas station where she worked the night shift. Dharam Singh Dhaliwal, 30, who had a previous relationship with the international student from India, has been named a prime suspect by Peel Regional Police, who’ve put out a Canada-wide warrant for his arrest on a charge of first-degree murder. While police try to locate him, his mother, Amarjit Dhaliwal, 50, and brother, Pritpal Dhaliwal, 25, were arrested in Moncton, N.B., on a charge of accessory to murder after the fact. Both remain locked up in jail while awaiting bail hearings next month. “Cowardly, Dharam continues to hide while his family suffers the consequences of his own (alleged) actions,” said Peel Homicide Det.-Sgt. Davis Baxter. “His own family has (allegedly) assisted him after the murder and now faces criminal charges and possible incarceration.” The allegations — carrying out a well-planned murder, which, according to police, included a staged suicide to disappear before the homicide place — are already horrific and gruesome enough. But to allegedly let your mom and brother effectively take the heat while you avoid capture? That is a whole different level of ugly. The shocking incident saw a killer ride up to the gas station at Britannia and Creditview Rds. on a bicycle, shoot the young woman just outside the gas station door, and then flee on foot – never to be seen again. Other than some dark surveillance video images of a covered-up suspect, it was difficult to tell who pulled the trigger? Detectives quickly learned that Dharam was on bail for alleged kidnapping and sexual assault charges laid in connection with the same victim, so they started to put their case together. One Dharam was not dead at the bottom of Niagara Falls, as police alleged he faked a suicide attempt before the shooting. Detectives believe the truck driver was with his family in Winnipeg following the shooting. The family moved to Winnipeg days before the slaying and New Brunswick a month ago. It’s unclear if Dharam has been to New Brunswick. But wherever he is, if he has read the news, he would know his mom and brother are behind bars. “The Peel Regional Police Homicide Bureau is continuing the investigation into locating Dharam Dhaliwal,” said Baxter, who alleged he “targeted and killed an innocent young woman and has gone to great lengths to avoid police.” Police are “encouraging people who Dharam Dhaliwal’s whereabouts to contact the Homicide Bureau at 905-453-3311, ext. 3205, or if they wish to remain anonymous, they can call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477).” Maybe that tipster could be somebody who’s not impressed that a suspect in a murder allegedly dragged his family into this. Perhaps Dharam will realize the time has come to face the music. It’s only a matter of time. A GTA lawyer suggested there are possible mitigating factors in this case, and perhaps more balance is needed. It’s difficult to listen when someone like a rat is accused of shooting a defenseless young woman was all alone in Canada. The best place to air any defense is in a courtroom. These are allegations. They have not been proven, and if Dharam has a compelling justification, a courtroom is a place to present it. Leaving his mom and brother to sit in a courtroom and jail cell is reprehensible. So is harboring him to help avoid arrest. Such a person could also find locked up like Dharam’s mother and brother. Maybe Dharam is OK with others being caged for his alleged deadly crime, but many agree with the police that it is “cowardly” to do so.
