just finished stormfront (do the titles mean anything or am i just being analytical )
and honestly i was pleasantly suprised by the last 100 pages, did find a few sections to be a bit dragging like murphey and the scorpion and the fight at the end with victor but im just a bit bored with fight scenes in general
but overall? the whole scene with monica and her daughter and their interactions with harry , to harry's monologue about usage of power how he could simply destroy victor with his strength in magic but doesnt, holding himself back and holding strict to the laws of the white council even if they treat him like shit, i liked the sort of dynamic that was made between him and victor of how one guy can be influenced by this greed to learning more and more of magic even if he has to commit vile deeds, while on the other hand harry knows he himself has this great strength but decides not too, he's knows what he is capable of and decides not too, perhaps bc of his past or white magic ( i think thats the name?) he uses what he has for the good of it and with the fact that magic should be used for the goodness, of protecting and etc etc
maybe im being too deep into n being 🤓☝️ but i liked it, such a fun book and im excited to get into the second one

I'm currently getting into Frankenstein right now! I just read the beginning letters and Chapter 1-2, and my thoughts so far:
Gay gay homosexual gay
Either Bram Stoker and Mary Shelley are built different, or Victorian writers just have a tendency to make their character really repressed and gay
Victor Frankenstein's family exudes so much rich white people energy my god
So far, we're getting Frankenstein's backstory, and I'm incredibly amused by just how utterly normal it is. You'd never guess that the guy who created a living creature and is now the face of mad scientists in modern pop cultute would have such a normal—even described as happy—childhood.
Maybe it's a good thing I read Dracula first 'cause NOW I CAN UNDERSTAND AND APPRECIATE VICTORIAN WRITING HEHEHEHEHHEHEHE (I know Mary Shelley's book being published in 1818 technically makes her book part of the Georgian Era, and people classify her book more towards the Romanticism Era, but I'm reading the 1831 edition. Let me have this </3)
Overall, I'm really enjoying this. I've heard some really interesting discussions centered around Frankenstein, and I can't wait to be able to participate in those. The writing is also just very good, would recommend!

synopsis under the cut
prose and cons by amanda flower
Magic, books, and cats collide in a village near Niagara Falls in the latest Magical Bookshop Mystery from the author of Crime and Poetry.  In Cascade Springs, New York, Violet Waverly and her grandma, Daisy, are the proprietors of Charming Books, where the power of the written word is positively enchanting...  October in Cascade Springs means tourists are pouring in for the annual Food and Wine Festival, and Daisy hopes to draw those crowds to the store. She asks Violet and the local writing group, the Red Inkers, to give a reading of the works of Edgar Allan Poe in the shop’s back garden to entertain the revelers. Everyone eagerly agrees.  Yet their enthusiasm is soon extinguished when Violet discovers one of the writers dead during the event. After the shop magically tells Violet she’ll need to rely on Poe’s works to solve the murder, she enlists the help of her trusty tuxedo cat, Emerson, and the shop’s crow, Faulkner. But they must act fast before someone else’s heart beats nevermore...
(this is a sequel but cozies are generally pretty standalone & i'll give you a recap of the first book)
pearl by josh malerman (previously published as on this, the day of the pig)
From Josh Malerman, the New York Times bestselling author of Bird Box and Malorie, comes the legend of Pearl, a strange new monster unlike any other in horror (previously published as On This, the Day of the Pig). NAMED ONE OF THE BEST BOOKS OF THE YEAR BY THE WALL STREET JOURNAL • “Daring readers should find this tale of a malevolent telepathic pig to be a memorable experience.”—Booklist (starred review) There’s something strange about Walter Kopple’s farm. At first it seems to be his grandson, who cruelly murders one of Walter’s pigs in an act of seemingly senseless violence. But then people in town begin to whisper that Walter’s grandson heard a voice commanding him to kill. And that the voice belongs to a most peculiar creature: the pig named Pearl. Walter is not sure what to believe. He knows he’s always been afraid of the strangely malevolent Pearl. But as madness and paranoia grip the town and the townspeople descend on Walter’s farm with violent wrath, they begin to discover that true evil wears a human face.
the murder wheel by tom mead
In London, 1938, young and idealistic lawyer Edmund Ibbs is trying to find any shred of evidence that his client Carla Dean wasn’t the one who shot her husband dead at the top of a Ferris Wheel. But the deeper he digs, the more complex the case becomes, and Edmund soon finds himself drawn into a nightmarish web of conspiracy and murder. Before long he himself is implicated in not one but two seemingly impossible crimes. First, a corpse appears out of thin air during a performance by famed illusionist “Professor Paolini” in front of a packed auditorium at the Pomegranate Theatre. Then a second victim is shot dead in a locked dressing room along one of the theatre’s winding backstage corridors. Edmund is in exactly the wrong place at the wrong time, and attracts the suspicion of Scotland Yard inspector George Flint. Luckily, conjuror-turned-detective Joseph Spector is on the scene. Only Spector’s uniquely logical perspective can pierce the veil of deceit in a world of illusion and misdirection, where seeing is not always believing. Tom Mead continues to pay homage to the locked room mysteries of the Golden Age in this second Joseph Spector novel.
(another sequel, but again mysteries can generally stand alone & i'll recap book 1)
grave witch by kalayna price
Grave witch Alex Craft can speak to the dead, but that doesn’t mean she likes what they have to say. As a private investigator and consultant for the police, Alex Craft has seen a lot of dark magic. But even though she’s on good terms with Death himself—who happens to look fantastic in a pair of jeans—nothing has prepared her for her latest case. Alex is investigating a high profile murder when she’s attacked by the ‘shade’ she’s raising, which should be impossible. To top off her day, someone makes a serious attempt on her life, but Death saves her. Guess he likes having her around... To solve this case Alex will have to team up with tough homicide detective Falin Andrews. Falin seems to be hiding something—though it’s certainly not his dislike of Alex—but Alex knows she needs his help to navigate the tangled webs of mortal and paranormal politics, and to track down a killer wielding a magic so malevolent, it may cost Alex her life...and her soul.

Liveblogging: Warrior Cats Into The Wild
Pre-Prologue (??)
[Plain Text: Pre-Prologue (??)]
I have never seen a book describing its characters before the book starts. That's something. I'm drawing these cats before I read the books OR see much fan content that somehow I managed to avoid until now then. The drawings aren't going to be that much and I'm using a base I made

BRO police stations will actually punish you if you don't make a certain number of arrests and give out a certain number of tickets every month. But then when you get civilian complaints for excessive force, they literally do nothing? Lmaoooo
Oh and then prison guards are literally even worse. Like in training they STRAIGHT UP TELL YOU to hit the prisoners, not make an effort to break up prison fights, and not to let yourself "see them as human" like bro??? 😭😭😭

Reading Dracula rn and I stopped at Chapter 12, and so far, the journey's basically:
[puts hands on head] STOKER WHY WOULD YOU DO THIS TO THEM WHY IS YOUR MIND LIKE THIS (please continue I love what you're doing)
LUCY........... LUCY............!!!!!!!! My girl is being targetted and I HATE IT <///3 When will she have a good night's sleep PLEASE STOKER I'M BEGGING YOU
I need Renfield to kill Seward. Or at the very least Seward should get hit by a bus.
Van Helsing your dialogue is so delightful please keep infodumping I love reading your words they're so [goes bonkers over them]
[shakes the book] DRACULAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA LEAVE THEM ALONEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE
TLDR: Probably not the best book to get into if you're someone who hasn't read in a while, but it's certainly a fun one! I'm gonna come out of this an irrevocably changed person. I just know it.

Nesha Reads 2022: My Not-So Organized Liveblogging of Books.
This Poison Heart | This Wicked Fate
Raybearer | Redemptor
Tumblr media
Skin of the Sea
A Song of Wraiths and Ruin | A Psalm of Storms and Silence
The Tea Dragon Society Series: The Tea Dragon Society | The Tea Dragon Festival | The Tea Dragon Tapestry
Orishas, Goddesses, and Voodoo Queens
The Dreamer Trilogy (Not Black books, but features a prominent Black female character.) I don’t believe that this is the case for the other books by this author. The reason I’m pointing it out here and didn’t for the Tea Dragon Society is that this series is hella long and I wanted MY audience to realize that this trilogy’s representation may not necessarily reflect the remainder of the author’s work and is the only portion of it that I intend to feature in this Black femmecentric space. Call Down the Hawk | Mister Impossible | Greywaren (Releases October 2022. Potentially will not be read until next year)
Iron Widow (This is not a Black story)
Akata Woman (Third installment in The Nsibidi Scripts)
Bayou Magic *Didn’t liveblog. Very short read and cute story, though
Pinned
The School for Good and Evil  (Not Black books, but features a prominent female character who will be played by a multiracial girl with some Black ancestry.)
Maya and the Rising Dark Series: I read the first book last year, then reread it this year, along with the sequels. Maya and the Rising Dark (Re-read) | Maya and the Return of the Godlings | Maya and the Lord of Shadows
Blood Like Fate (Sequel to Blood Like Magic)
I am currently not reading anything because of the two job, one off day thing happening, but lemme gon’ head and post this since we’re coming to the end of the year. :)

we're gonna ease back into it with mile high with a vampire by lynsay sands, which will hopefully be some cheesy fun.

Jet Lassiter likes being a pilot for Argeneau Inc. Perks included travelling to exotic locations and meeting interesting people, even if they are the blood-sucking kind. He’s living the good life, until his plane goes down in the mountains and four of his passengers are gravely injured. They need blood to heal… and Jet is the only source. Quinn Peters never wanted to be immortal. Once a renowned heart surgeon, she was turned against her will and now she has to drink blood to survive. Before she can ask how her “life” can get any worse, she’s in a plane crash. One of the few survivors, Quinn is desperate to get the mortal pilot to safety before her fellow immortals succumb to their blood lust and drain Jet dry. But hungry vampires are the least of their worries—the crash wasn’t an accident, and someone is trying to kill Quinn. Will she and Jet find their happily ever after as life mates, or will her assassin find her first?
