‘A #woman is like a tea bag - you can’t tell how strong she is until you put her in hot water’. There is plenty of hot water in #MusicIndustry. Interview With: Caroline Smith
Tumblr media
Caroline Smith of Minneapolis, Minnesota is an R&B, soul singer. Caroline Smith‘s new music has settled comfortably into a new backdrop as she takes a step from girl to woman. Half About Being a Woman is a record about self-acceptance and growing into yourself; it’s about going back to the roots of ‘feel-good’ music.
youtube
Your music video Magazine is a beautiful expression of womanhood. Since you are considered a small-scale artist, do you find that there are some advantages to alternative forms of media to promote your message as well as your music? Of course. Taking a note out of the ol’ Beyonce play book, visuals are a great way for me to communicate with my fans what I was feeling when I wrote that song. I’m a very visual artist. When I write a song, I can see the dance moves, I can see the music video, i can see what outfit I want to wear, thats how I know its a good song I’m writing. And when I get to realize that with a visual, its really really exciting for me.
Your solo album Half About being a Woman is a jump from your earlier work in style and content. Did your experience in the music industry influence your need to speak up about womanhood? The music industry, yes, but also just navigating every day life as a woman. I grew up with a very strong, very independent, and very vocal feminist for a mother. I always took it for granted. I always assumed every woman had that kind of backbone instilled in her. But one day i looked around and saw that what i had was special and I felt a very urgent need to communicate that part of myself with the world. It all happened very naturally, like I was following an instinct deep inside of me. Turns out it was just the voice of my mother that she put in me long, long ago, telling me to be there for you fellow sisters.
I can imagine you have had a positive reaction from women with your last album and your collaboration with Lizzo. How does it feel to be a positive model for women? You know, I try not to think about it too much. I just try to be natural and genuine. I think Lizzo feels the same way. And at the end of the day, I think a woman, no matter what kind of woman you are, speaking her mind and feeling the strength to be her actual true self is practicing feminism. It’s not the easiest thing to do in this world and in our culture. When I lose my vision or lose my way, my guiding light at the end of the tunnel is always to be honest and my true self. That in itself is a powerful message to communicate.
Are you currently working on anything or plan on touring again anytime soon? Yes! Working and working and writing and writing. As soon as the new music is released, I’ll be hitting the road as fast as i can my bags packed.

carlyraejepsen It's been a dream of mine to perform at Radio City Music Hall. Now that pre- sale is announced I waited no minutes to go check out the venue. Photos in the vintage powder room. Photos on the roof. It's chill. I'm okay. Who's coming to the show? (6/9/22)

carlyraejepsen A few snap shots of Denmark (in no particular order):
1. Played the @/nibefestival
2. Hiked into the woods to find a troll that grants wishes
3. Beat my band and crew mates in a mad obstacle course we randomly found (and reminded them I'm a true Canadian mountain woman - incase they forgot)
4. Discovered my tour manager and I are coincidentally reading the exact same Murakami book on the flight from Denmark to Amsterdam
5. Got our asses kicked by local world champion players at foosball just when we were getting cocky!
6. Lost my luggage even tho the sticker was so cute and said "please don't steal me!"
Madrid next! (7/6/22)

Pussy Riot
By: Shannon Morrell
Tumblr media
Among some of the most outspoken and radical Feminist bands, Pussy Riot is widely known as the pro-woman Russian punk-art collective that was imprisoned in 2012 after a performance of theirs upset authorities and offended religious leaders. This event, although controversial, has given publicity and an outpouring of fans that appreciate the unapologetic feminism this band promotes. In an interview with LA Weekly, an unnamed band member explained what makes the group’s message so powerful: “There are two reasons why we frighten people; the first thing is that we’re a feminist female group with no men connected to it, and the second is that we don’t have leaders.” In Russia, feminism is a dirty word but this group has consistently stood up against Putin’s oppressive state for the sake of tearing down the patriarchy and educating everyone on the importance of feminism through their music.

Carrie Brownstein
Carrie Brownstein, best known for her part in Portlandia, discusses her early work with band Sleater-Kinney. In Brownstein’s interview with NPR music she discusses her memoir, which includes her experience with using music as a means to cope with the chaos in life. Her influence came from the riot grrrl movement and feminist punk rock scene of Bikini Kill and Bratmobile from Olympia, Washington.
“And I felt like things were being filled in for me ... that I was being seen, and that sense of being recognized was so crucial to me. And I think it's crucial to finally recognize yourself in the world. It gives you a place to go.“
