one day I will make a much longer lore post about her but the cliffs notes on Tav!Gisèle:
- Chosen of Eilistraee.
- Simultaneously Chosen of Loviatar, aka an anguissette.
- born to House Surana, Second House of Menzoberranzan, during Lolth’s Silence. (I will do a whole post just on their history, but they are basically Drow Shahrizai.) She briefly had an arranged betrothal with Minthara when they were very small children that was nullified when Triel Baenre was assassinated and Quenthel took control of House Baenre.
- first love was Shalnazar, the courtesan who deflowered her, he was a secret worshiper of Eilistraee who was then taken in by House Surana for his magical abilities. He introduced her to the Dark Maiden and she worshiped w him in secret.
- while attending Arach-Tinilith, she was caught rule breaking and punished publicly by Minthara, and her getting off on it outed her as what everyone including her erroneously thought was a Lolthite blessing but was in fact her anguissette thing. this gave her a lot of clout but it also made her a target.
- had extremely toxic yuri with Quenthel Baenre for years. Gisèle seduced her for protection from the enemies that last point earned, Quenthel took advantage of her age and position. All the while knowing her daughter Minthara was in love with Gisèle btw.
- defected from Menzo a few years after graduating Arach-Tinilith bc Quenthel demanded she sacrifice Shalnazar. She fled to Lith My’athar, where she formally dedicated herself to Eilistraee’s service and trained as a Sword Dancer under my old Hero of Undrentide in NWN, Kariza de’Camyras. Eventually Eilistraee asked her to become her Chosen, and Gisèle agreed.
- was abducted by the Nautiloid while on her way to Waterdeep, to assist the rebuilding of the Promenade of the Dark Maiden.
- has Draconic ancestry from a silver dragon pre-Descent, and a still living deep dragon, which reflects in her Sorcerer levels.
- mortal reincarnation of my old CHARNAME Ravenna, who ascended to godhood in Throne of Bhaal and became the Goddess of Merciful Death, then was murdered. She does not find out about this until Act 3.
- has a large complicated polycule as usual: this one is Gisèle/Astarion/Halsin/Shadowheart/Wyll/Karlach, but the “core” of it insofar as much as it has one is Gisèle/Halsin/Astarion.
- Wyll becomes her oathsworn protector (eg an Oath of Devotion paladin) once he loses his powers from Mizora.
- She saved Minthara and their relationship status is…deeply complicated but Min eventually begins to accept Eilistraee’s teachings, if in small ways.
- Abdirak is a full companion, joining the group after fleeing the battle at the goblin camp, and becomes her lover and mentor in the ways of Loviatar (who I have always written as a neutrally aligned fem Kushiel type of goddess rather than neckbeard fap bait.).
- Gortash could be a whole post but. she ends up flipping him entirely due to the deep spiritual bond they share as Chosen of Bane and Loviatar. (Think of this as a Scion of Kushiel reacting to his chosen and yeah.)

Legend says Terre d'Ange was founded by the god Elua, whose sole commandment to his people was to love as thou wilt. He and his divine companions made good on that precept, bestowing so much love to the humans under their care that the people of Terre d'Ange carried a spark of the divine within them. For those with Anael's gifts, that meant a deft hand with growing things. For Shemhazai's scions, that meant sailing as easily as breathing.
The Theerapanyakul family was blessed by Kushiel, god of justice and divine punishment. Dominance was their birthright and their lifeblood. Korn Theerapanyakul told his sons that Kushiel blessed them so that they could rule Terre d'Ange in the manner it deserved. Only they could be trusted to mete righteous suffering unto the wicked, and safeguard the innocent.

What is it about fanfic writers interpreting Alhaitham in ways that lay my private, personal experience out on a page, over and over again?
Alhaitham in canon doesn't do this. Or rather, he does, but on a surface level. He reminds me of a younger me, an 18-year-old me. His thinking is more sophisticated than mine was, but he's out-of-balance, singleminded about seeking truth. I was seeking to perfect an inner model of truth/reality/the world; that part of Alhaitham resonates. And I dedicated myself to self-knowledge and self-growth back then, and it's been a cornerstone of my identity in all the years since, but I've interwoven myself with the world and with other people.
Humans are social animals; we don't thrive in pure isolation. Emotions are just as much vital information as clinical observation and rational thought.
But something about how a number of people parse Alhaitham and put him onto paper... It's like they're reaching into my mind/heart/history and laying it out in words.
My most recent find for this took my breath away, nearly made me cry as I read it far past my bedtime, midnight on a Sunday: late-blooming honeysuckle by @ciaran (intimatopia on AO3). Alhaitham in a messy D/s relationship with a self-destructive, self-loathing Kaveh. The scene goes sideways and Alhaitham ends up needing aftercare, not that he even knows to ask for it. I so rarely encounter anyone even talking about the dominant or top needing aftercare, much less depicting it, and even far less actually getting any aftercare. It's a depiction I just don't see. I could probably count on one hand the number of times I've seen a story explore this sort of impact on a dominant in a messy dynamic like this one. (Less than one hand, probably. The only one coming to mind is Kushiel's Scion by Jacqueline Carey, though I'm sure I've read at least a fanfic or two that touches on it. Not like this, though. Not as directly and thoroughly and centrally.) Didn't know I needed this sort of depiction so deeply.
(Now if I could just find something depicting the healing process after someone gets out of a relationship with their emotionally abusive submissive. But probably I'll have to write it myself if I want that particular representation. ...welp that gives me a terrible awful idea for a fic that I might have to write, now.)
Other Alhaitham stories that hit particularly hard:
forms of love by acynthe - the closest depiction I have ever found to my particular variety of asexuality, as well as one of the main ways I engage in relationship (close observation, collecting little details of the other person, seeking always to understand them more deeply and to learn their patterns and their minds)
hard to doubt by @lithopus - trans!Alhaitham using intellectualization and formal speech to distance, self-protect, detach for a variety of relatable reasons. (I'll copypaste my comment on the fic under the cut below.)
love lies in praise by lithopus again - I am more often Alhaitham in this situation (trying to convey to someone with cripplingly low self-esteem how I actually see them, how amazing they are), but I have been in Kaveh's position once upon a time as well (the one with cripplingly low self-esteem; that's been in a better place for years, thankfully).
My AO3 comment on hard to doubt:
"Due to Alhaitham’s bluntness, everyone believes him when he claims to prefer speaking factually over speaking rhetorically—but the secret is the way Alhaitham uses facts, which is absolutely a rhetorical device. Sometimes Alhaitham speaks in technical truths, to evade accusations of dishonesty even as he misleads the listener; other times, he selectively presents facts so that they lead to a mistaken assumption, and then blames the deceived listener for jumping to conclusions or failing to ask clarifying questions. And then there are times like now, when Alhaitham purposely responds to a question with something that is true…except his response isn’t the actual answer.”
*cough* oh no. why would you do this. You can’t tell on those of us who use defenses like this. That’s just rude. (My related go-to is that I get more technical, intellectualized, and abstract with my language the more uncomfortable I get, to kind of dissociate and distance myself from the emotion or vulnerability of whatever I’m saying. Most frequently comes up in conflict with an intimate partner, or when talking about sex.)
”But the issue is this: that as much as Alhaitham pretends to prioritize his own needs, he has a terrible habit of doing almost anything Kaveh asks of him…. If Kaveh passionately declares how badly he wants to suck Alhaitham off, then Alhaitham might disregard his own comfort in an attempt to accommodate him.
…“I didn’t want you to feel compelled.”
…“Every time he thinks that Alhaitham is the least romantic person in the world, the man goes and does something like that—admitting that he paid such close attention to Kaveh all those years ago…
are you serious. How do you keep writing versions of these characters that are mirrors of my own experience? (Thankfully I’ve had a lot of therapy since I was in Alhaitham’s exact shoes. But your version of Alhaitham is me in my teens/early 20’s. And sometimes I still regress to that on bad days. I was less outwardly abrasive though, I had Kaveh’s over-empathy / poor boundaries / Rescuer issues along with it.)
…he’s also way wittier and snarkier than I’ll ever be though, because wow, that exchange where he’s sassing Kaveh when Kaveh gets on his knees? Startled a laugh from me multiple times.
”He speaks so formally, in such a detached manner, that anyone besides Kaveh might fail to detect the painful truth underlying Alhaitham’s words: that to avoid the anxiety of invalidating himself, Alhaitham had simply resigned himself to a touch-starved life.”
Hah. Okay, there it is, the thing I mentioned earlier. The speaking in a formal, detached manner to talk about something super vulnerable, to make it more distant and less overwhelming, to be able to talk about it at all.
”Sometimes, Alhaitham refrains from something not because he wants to, but because he’s deemed it impossible."
Okay. This is rude, but I have to ask. Do you know someone like your depiction of Alhaitham, or are you that someone, or is this purely extrapolation from the character as depicted in the game? Because the relatability is uncanny and this is not something I have seen represented so explicitly in fiction … ever, really. It’s something that can be seen or derived if you squint in a few characters in visual media (BBC Sherlock, some versions of the Doctor, a few others), but only in an interpretive way, not spelled out like this.
(Also the trans pieces are very well done too, speaking as a transmasc non-binary person. The aversion to both shaving and facial hair makes me side-eye your version of Alhaitham a bit too, wondering if he’s perhaps not entirely binary gendered himself, as that’s one of the big reasons I’ve avoided HRT despite getting top surgery, facial hair would probably feel dysphoric on the non-binary front for me.)
And my comment on love lies in praise:
Oh this hurts.
It hurts beautifully, and poignantly, but oof. Wow.
I have been both these people. I haven’t been in Kaveh’s position in a long time, thankfully, but I remember those feelings and that crippling self-hate, self-loathing, that inability to believe anything else or that anyone could think anything else, and if they did then I was deceiving them somehow, they just hadn’t realized it yet.
And I’ve been in Alhaitham’s position, trying to convince someone I love that they are so much more than they think, trying to convey how I see them, aching for them to see themselves as beautifully brilliant as I see them, as wondrous and strong in their struggles against their own darkness and the bleak harshness of the world. And how much it hurts when they won’t, can’t hear it.
This was so achingly, beautifully portrayed.

Kushiel's Legacy GIF sets || Melisande Shahrizai
To describe Melisande Shahrizai is, as the poets say, to paint a nightingale’s song; it is a thing which cannot be done. She was three-and-twenty years of age at that time, though time never seemed to touch her, either way it flowed. If I say her skin was like alabaster, her hair a black so true it gleamed blue where the light touched it and her eyes a sapphire that gemstones might envy, I speak only the truth; but she was a D’Angeline, and this only hints at the beginning of beauty.
“Melisande,” Delaunay said, pride and amusement in his voice. “This is Phèdre.”
As I am D’Angeline and Night Court-born, you may be sure, I am not easily awed by beauty; but I am what I am, and there are other things that awe me. The Shahrizai are an ancient house of courtiers, and many, knowing little of the nomenclature of Terre d’Ange, suppose they are of Shemhazai’s lineage. It is not so. The namesakes among the descendants of Elua’s Companions are intertwined in such a way that only a D’Angeline scholar can comprehend them.
I, who had studied such things, had no need of history to tell me House Shahrizai’s lineage. When I glanced up politely to meet the blue eyes of Melisande Shahrizai, her look went through me like a spear, my knees turned to water, and I knew that she was a scion of Kushiel.

Currently Reading: I would like to blame the pile of books I am juggling to my scattered brain but that would be disingenuous. I tend to have multiple going at any one time. The only difference is the ravenous speed I normally have when not on chemo or side effects. Currently it is The Sweet Far Thing by Libba Bray (to be followed by the Diviners), Earthian, Akuma no Riddle, Angel Sanctuary, Six of Crows, The Talented Mr. Ripley, Kushiel’s Scion, By a Silver Thread, Tender is the flesh. Many of these are in a state of reading a second or hundredth time so I do not feel bad for putting them down for months at a time.
Current Obsession: oh boy that’s a doozy. Until this past weekend it was continuing my obsession with trying to catch back up on Critical Role after falling behind with the last job. Actively anticipating the return of the Silt Verses & Impact Winter. Then two things happened. One we get the announcement of Fate/Strange Fake (& I watch the 1 hour movie) which sent me deep into my Nausuverse obsession again (I adore Tiné and may well be my favorite character in the whole verse). As well as the fact that we opened a memory box of friends who passed 25 years ago. And there is just so much there. So many things that just break my heart but also make me soar. Showing me how much they impacted my life even if our time together was far too brief. So that probably is my great obsession right now & everything it stirs up.

IN THE BLEAK MIDWINTER…
Caïn Éloi is a bastard born to a failed Servant of Naamah, and born on the dirty streets of Night’s doorstep. He watched his Mother lay with Patrons, trying to earn enough coin to pay back her debt to Heliotrope House and feed her family. He has an older Brother, and three younger siblings, including one sister.
He went and joined a gang to start to make money, and over the years he became the leader of such, his brothers joining in with the activities.
When he was sixteen and his older brother eighteen, they joined the Border Patrol in Camlach. Both were taught how to kill, and they became effective at it, seeing a lot of combat and some terrible battles. They sent their coin home to their Mother and family, leaving their third youngest in charge of the gang in their absence. After a five-year services, they returned home to sorrow and disappointment.
Their Mother was dead, and his brother had lost control of the gang. There started a bloody time on the Doorstep, and eventually, they took back control. The Éloi’s Roosters became the best and most dangerous gang in the district, having their hands in theft, smuggling, and Protection.

Older Brother (29ish)- City Guard
Third Brother (Freddy Carter - 24ish - Lost control of the Gang, quick and vicious temper)
Sister (Kaya Scodelario - 21ish) - Princess of the Doorstep, respected and feared because of her Brothers.

Aymeric ;)
One of her greatest loves.
And I know damn well it’s a cliché and ~unrealistic~ but it really was love at first sight for Gisele with Aymeric. If you asked her about anything that was discussed that first time they met in the intercessory at Camp Dragonhead, she would be absolutely unable to recall a word of it because she was mesmerized by him; his beauty literally took her breath away and she couldn’t take her eyes off him. More than that, he wasn’t anything at all what she expected—a grim sort of Greagoir figure, stern and unyielding and maybe something of a zealot, given her previous experiences with holy knights even in Ferelden. Aymeric being the entire opposite only served to intrigue her more. That he turned out to be as kind as he is cunning only made her fall deeper in love with him—she sees so much of herself in him, down to the not coming from “good stock”, clawing his way up to a position of power from virtually nothing, using his ambition and cunning for good. And that’s the thing; Gisele adores Aymeric as much for his mind as his body, their chess games get intense as they try to outmaneuver each other and matching wits with him is one of her very favorite things.
He also inspires her a great deal; Gisele has written reams of poetry about him, and he’s the Atelier’s greatest muse, she adores dressing him because he looks so beautiful in absolutely everything. But also in the kind of leader he is; funny enough he’s exactly how she is in the old DA timeline where she becomes Warden-Commander and then Queen of Ferelden.
Gisele would do anything for him. In the AU where he restores the Ishgardian throne and is crowned king, Gisele becomes his queen and they’re an absolute powerhouse of a team. But even in the mainline Giseleverse she’s constantly giving him advice on difficult matters, despite being Antecedent of an ostensibly politically neutral order. Gisele’s of the belief that Aymeric has far too much weighing on his shoulders and anything at all that she can do to ease that burden is the least she can do for someone she loves so much. And part of that is encouraging him in his expressions of femmehood and gender things that he’d repressed for so long, out of necessity.
And the kink. Dear gods the kink. Gisele’s exploits with all the elfpile have helped her a great deal but particularly with Aymeric; the only way I can describe their dynamic is in Kusheline terms, if Aymeric were a scion of Kushiel and Gisele were an anguisette (actually in the KL AU I even had Aymeric as a bastard of House Shahrizai). Aymeric has always been somewhat afraid and ashamed of his darker desires but Gisele never truly realized how deep her own went until her explorations with him and the others, but especially him. It’s such a cornerstone of their relationship too. There are many many reasons why she married him but that’s near the top.
