This concert was like a throwback to the last few years of my journey with kpop and korea in general...
Big Bang was one of the first kpop groups that I knew of in secondary school, but at that time I just brushed aside Big Bang and their song Haru Haru as being terrible because I didn’t understand a word of Korean then. What an irony to be looking back on the memory of the conversation I had with my friend then and realising how ignorant and self-righteous the 15-year-old me was back then.
Then ALIVE album was released and I started becoming a lil more interested in Big Bang and kpop. Remember talking to friends about songs like Blue, Bad Boy, and Monster. And during SMU Orientation, Fantastic Baby was the Orientation Dance Song and we had to learn the steps to it. When Big Bang sang it, it was like my body was programmed to dance to Fantastic Baby with those specific dance steps.
And then their first song from MADE album, Loser, was released when I was in Busan for exchange, and it really 폭발 my interest in BB. Listening to Loser definitely brought back memories of exchange, singing this song while climbing up the PNU mountain with Ting Jun and Jialong.
And their last songs from MADE album, 에라 모르겠다 and Last Dance, were released as I took Korean classes in Daegu. I remember excitedly announcing to everyone that BB had comeback... and my reviews on those songs. I still don’t understand why they translated 에라 모르겠다 to ‘fxxk it’, especially when it means more like ‘whatever’??? Anyhoo, the song is awesome for how it sounds like “and I wanna get down”, so definitely appreciating it.
And finally, attending their last concert before their enlistment. So awesome to attend it in Korea because the Korean VIPs were amazing??!!! And also because this was the crowd where BB really started with and I could tell they were the most comfortable with the crowd. And how the fans chose NOT to encore so that BB could rest for the next day’s concert. And how they sang the song to give strength to BB while waiting for them to change. Seriously enjoyed the concert so much!
Really feels like my relationship to Korea is tied to Big Bang with so many random memories tied to their songs. And oddly it feels like i’m sending my 친한 오빠 off to the army?! Like I was genuinely sad as they said their goodbyes to the fans, asking them to wait for them for two years, and how the fans supported them. Can’t wait to seeing Big Bang come back as a stronger, more mature group with all five members.
Trip to Cheorwon County, Gangwon Province (16 to 17 Dec 2017) - Part 3
- White Horse Hill Battle Memorial
- Traditional Activities - Tofu making, Injeolmi making, Cloth dyeing
- Bonfire night
The White Horse Hill Battle was one of the key battles during the Korean War, where the North and South fought 12 times within only 10 days to take control of the hill - high ground that provides a good strategic location in the midst of an otherwise flat ground. The battles were so fierce and so many shots were fired that when the South finally gained control over the hill, there was so much gunpowder that the hill was completely covered in white - thus making it look like a white horse. Now, the South has a GOP (my guess is gentry outfield post, but i have no idea and the soldier who brought us around also had no idea what the acronym was for lollll). This was our last destination for the tour, and we went back to learn some traditional activities in the warmth of the cheorwon community centre that we were also staying in that night.
We learnt how to make tofu, injeolmi and dye cloth. I had some vague idea from previous about the process of tofu making, but it was my first time seeing it in person. What was most surprising was after getting the tauhueyzhui (the liquid from squeezing the soya beans through a filter), they added seawater that had been kept for a year to remove the toxins, and this sea water helps in the process of coagulation to make soft tofu (순두부). We were allowed to try eating the soft tofu with soya sauce - it was so fresh and soft and AMAZING!!! To make the harder tofu, put the soft tofu into a box and put under pressure and it will harden - i think HAHA.
Injeolmi is rice cake covered with powder grounded from soya beans. We were made to hit the rice cake (which I reaaally sucked at), and then batch by batch of the pounded rice cake were brought to a tray filled with soya bean powder to be rolled into a long snake-like rice cake, and then cut into smaller pieces to be rolled in soya bean powder. It was warm and hence less sticky than the usual injeolmi and I loved it!!
We then were taught cloth dyeing in the traditional method using a yellow dye made from marigold. Don’t think i’ll actually use the yellow handkerchief, but i will definitely keep it as keepsake!
The bonfire was so fun! And perfect for the cold night. Sang random songs, including christmas carols, while some people got drunk. It was a really chill and fun group that made it a chill and fun night. Loved this trip the most.
Seoul Lantern Festival at Cheonggyecheon with Sin Lek and Rachel (his colleague) (17 November 2017)
Finally got to hang out with Sinlek after more than a year since graduation. Glad to see how far we both have come since graduating, and so proud as a fellow graduate to see his accomplishments at work. Had dinner with him and his colleague and Bel as well, then headed to cheonggyecheon to see the lanterns they had put up for the Seoul Lantern Festival. Saw the “clean bear” that Sinlek commented was more like “cleaning bear” cos the bear itself was not clean. Pretty lights prepared for Christmas - just slightly more than a month to go to Christmas!
- YG Entertainment Building (yes, we actually walked in because we didn’t know we couldn’t go in! Sat outside the building not because we really wanted to stalk them, but because we were dead tired from walking from the main street of hongdae O.O)
- Ewha Women’s University
- N Seoul Tower @ Namsan
- Dragon Hill Spa (my first jjimjilbang this time round!)
