Road trips can be a feast for the eyes. A few years back I took an excursion to southwest India, the lush tropical land of Kerala state. The vast green fields of rice found here, near the village of Kollengode in the Palakkad district, with the cloud-kissed Western Ghats mountains as a backdrop (rising to nearly 9,000 ft or 2,743 m) will be etched in my memory for some time.

Kerla has a wet climate. Most of the monsoon rains (southwest summer monsoon) that fall here occur between early June and late August, but late September through December is generally wet as well.
