This one’s pretty quick, but it came up in the 1081 recap. Kinda wishing I’d remembered it initially, feel like I should have since it was the theme of a nice moment in Stop!! Hibari-Kun. Speaking of, c’mon Koby why’d you have to use -san? Either way, Hibari means Lark, as in the type of bird. Which gets us to the pic of Sanji up there.

Uh...that’s not Sanji. Remember that whole Art NUE thing? Kikuhime who’s a dead ringer for precious Okiku and how odd that whole thing existing is in general? That’s the villain, Prince Lark. Felt like circling back to this anyways since we’ve seen Hibari more. I still think she hits a lot of the same territory as Kiku. We don’t get a lot of cutesy adult women and there’s the shared heart motif. Now we’re adding potentially a nonviolent streak.

Left is Lark murdering Kikuhime’s father, the basic plot is he frames the princess’s monster (devil fruit) bestie that sorta does remind me of Kawamatsu a little. Right is the final knockout. Both Kikus keep that theme of Luffy disrupting being a marriage offer from a privileged douche.

Overall I guess it’s just another little notch for wondering if the two are intended to be similar. I love what Hibari brings to Koby’s story. I’ve said this before; he’s the yardstick of a more normal shonen jump protagonist so Luffy looks a lot more...advanced let’s say. Helmeppo’s the rival/best friend and now Hibari is totally the will they/won’t they designated girl. Kujaku & Grus are the cool older ones in the group, Garp’s the mentor, and Drake’s probably the scary badass who dispenses great life lessons.

Kagekatsu and Kikuhime 😍🤧

Uesugi Kenshin and Takeda Shingen were rivals who respected each other. After their passing, their children, Kagekatsu and Kikuhime married unifying the Takeda and Uesugi who were at war for many years, securing the north.

At first, Kagekatsu was reluctant to marry and Kikuhime resented him as she felt disgraced of having to rely on a former “enemy” to save her own clan. But over time, they had a change of heart and began to love each other.

Kagekatsu admires her strong spirit in being selfless to protect her family clan and never knew there is such a strong woman warrior like herself. He does not see her as a “political hostage” but as a person, as his wife.

Kikuhime respects him for wanting to do the right thing regardless of what others say about him, protecting both Uesugi and Takeda, and refusing to divorce and dispose of her after her clan inevitably perished.

Even when they were separated when she had to stay in the capital as a sign of loyalty to the Regent, while he returns to his home province to rule, they still love each other and cherish the only time they had together.

Even when she told him to take a concubine to bear a child and heir to the Uesugi as she could not provide him with such as she was beginning to be ill, he refuses as she’s the only woman he loves till the very end.

Kanetsugu who served Kagekatsu since they were children is heartbroken to see his lord crying for the first time as he had never been the one to shed tears no matter what hardship he went through and battles he lead in the past.

But now, Kagekatsu could not control his emotions in public in front of Toyotomi Hideyori and his mother Yodo Dono, who understands his feeling of losing his wife on the same day he pays tribute to Hideyori.

I think it’s mighty wonderful of you to be considerate to the complaints of some people, but this is first and foremost, your story. Personally, what I think makes your writing so wonderful is the nuance and care you put into crafting the work. We get to see the experiences and thought processes of various characters that delves deeper into what makes them unique. This is what makes their characterizations so mesmerizing and addicting. I hope you can continue to create as you please, seeing this story grow from 10 chapters to over 40+ has been a delightful journey and I can’t wait to see what’s next. I’d be thrilled to see more of Shiki’s obon shenanigans and hear of her dances considering that she seemed quite fond of them.

Thank you for the kind words, and I'm glad you're enjoying the story and the (lengthy) detail going into it! In general I try to take things in good faith and be mindful of feedback, but we won't be seeing any drastic changes as a result of this. I can also confirm that there are also certain points that I have absolutely no intention of changing no matter what people might suggest, in terms of what's in store for the future. No spoilers from me on this, though!

(That aside, if I took every negative comment and/or criticism to heart, I'd never get any writing done haha.)

Obon! I look forward to getting to write about Obon again; it was fun fitting the festival into JJK-verse, and there will be more to see of it!

Kikuhime is dead. I forget if this was explicitly stated somewhere in the text, but: Kikuhime is very much dead. She was quietly disposed of by the Gojo Clan.

Miscellaneous detail: Gojo Takatomi was also the one who took initiative in removing Kikuhime. :)

Simple idea I was marinating on watering Chrysanthemum at work all day. But potentially interesting. Middle shot is Art NUE again. Wanted to show the scale of these tapestries, floor to ceiling. So freaking crazy to exist especially with the weird echo in the canon story. So...what if that wasn't such a fine line? Just combining two ideas we know from canon:

We do have the idea Zoro is a descendant of Ryuma. This is something we've used in the story and Kiku is sorta the other callback to Oda's pre-One Piece work so a shared theme makes sense.

Kikuhime is the Daimyo's daughter of Yo, a fictional (er...moreso) region of Wano. Or is it? If there was a different Wano before the walls, was Yo a historical region that no longer exists?

The outfits in Art NUE already look like an earlier period in Japanese history. Obviously the Straw Hats intruding is where this gets fuzzy, but could Kikuhime be something like Shiki or Uta where the actual character is canon? Is Kikuhime a weird doppelganger, or our girl's actual ancestor? Recall the only details we've gotten either way say the Hanayanagi school was one of prestige.

I thought it was a cool idea on its own, but given the whole Toki element...what if she knew Kikuhime, Lark, & Hitaki? What if they were both a story and real people who had a totally different story? This opens up a whole new axis in the Expanded Kiku Canon...was Kikuhime trans as well?
